Jack & Jill #5

Out of Love

Rate this book
Conspiracies. Corruption. Serial killers.

You name it—I'm fascinated by it. My mom always blamed my overly curious and highly suspicious mind on my dad.

My incredibly overbearing dad.

Mr. No One Is Good Enough For My Daughter has been terrifying my dates since I turned fifteen.

College is my chance to be free from his control and date any guy I want.

I'm absolutely certain he would hate Slade Wylder—almost as certain as I am that I do too.

Since when have I shied away from trouble?

Slade fascinates me. He lives in a house I'm certain is haunted. His dog is trained as well as any guard I've ever seen. Rumor on campus is that he deals drugs. It would explain a lot.

But it doesn't explain why he saves me from my darkest moment.

It doesn't explain why I can't stop thinking about him.

And the explanation I finally discover is far more dangerous than any rumor.

5 (MILLION) Stars!

Livy Knight is intelligent, sassy and she definitely has ADD! Lol 😂
At the age of 21, she leaves her father's house to go to college, where she meets Wylder, a bad boy with a dark and mysterious side - everything her overprotective and controlling father despises. 😬
Slade Wylder fascinates her - he doesn't talk to anyone, lives in a haunted house, rumors on campus says he's a dangerous drug dealer and with his asshole attitude, he doesn't care what people think of him. 💛

Ever since Livy was a girl, everyone said she will be with a man who is just like her dad, Jackson Knight. She never thought of it as a positive thing, until she met Wylder... strong, protective and loves with everything he has - so, despite all the warning signs, Livy can't help but be drawn to him. But what will she choose... LOVE or FAMILY? 😱😱😱

📚 “𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬… 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈’𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐚𝐲.”
“𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭?”
“𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” 📚

Wow, I haven't experienced such a "book-hangover" in a very long time... I can not describe how much I LOVED this book, each and every part of it!!! 💛
It gave all the FEELS - crying, laughing and swooning... sometimes all on the same page, at the same time! The writing was fascinating, the plot was deep, the characters were EVERYTHING - even the secondary characters were interesting. (And I want to give credit to my favorite secondary character, Jerry) 👑

📚 "𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬." 📚

Anyone who loves stories with secrets, mystery and lots of steam and romance will enjoy it, but... if you read Jack & Jill Series - you will FALL DEEPLY IN LOVE with this book! 🔥🔥🔥
Even though it's been a long time since I've read that amazing trilogy, I have a strong desire to start it all over again! (Maybe this time I'll try the audio version) 😜

This book has a little bit of everything - and more. 💛
I recommend reading Jack & Jill Series first, but I also recommend it as a stand-alone... it's THAT good!

~ Did I read this book because of the cover?

"You are nothing more than a bastard with the soul of Satan. A monster of the worst kind!" He brushed his middle finger across his bloodied lip before swiping his tongue along the cut. "This bastard with the soul of Satan, this monster of the worst kind… loves you."

I have to start by saying that I didn't know this book is a spin-off of the Jack & Jill series by this author. This book can be read as a standalone, but I think I would have liked this book more if I had read the other series before. What this book managed to do most is that I want to read Jackson Knight's (h's father) book now more than ever!

Just to sum up my feelings shortly. The first half til around 60% was pretty meh for me. It was like a 2 star read, because I couldn't connect to neither to Livy (h) nor Slade (H). Where was the flavour in the romance ehh? Everything was so bland and I was not digging how fast the main characters confessed their love for each other... this books is really not that long and when Livy and Slade profess their love under the 50% mark then I'm going to question it. I'm no chemist, maybe that's why i didn't see the chemistry between them 🤷🏽‍♀️ At the same time Livy's behaviour at the beginning was really stalker-ish.. Following Slade around and making him talk to her even though he clearly didn't want to that i was like girrrl please calm down and let the guy breathe 🤚

Slade Wylder is the typical cold mysterious asshole guy Livy Knight is attracted to once she meets him and his dog Jericho "Jerry" for the first time in school. After a guy almost raping Livy behind a container and getting murdered for it, Livy is pretty sure that her savior is Slade who is also her neighbor living across the street. Slade has an odd job where is sometimes disappears for day and leaves Jerry with Livy. And you know what? That dog man. He has my whole fucking heart. I LOVE JERRY BEST CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE BOOK NO COMPETITION!! I don't know why but dogs and kids in books are always better than the main characters fight me on this 😌
"I would let someone torture me to protect you. I would die the worst fucking death in the world for you." His breath surged from his heaving chest as his eyes reddened. "I love you…" He clenched his jaw, holding onto his emotions that threatened his eyes. "Even if you can't love me back."

So there is a lot of drama surrounding Slade's job and what he does for living. Livy and her family have enemies and things get interesting. That's when at around the ~60% mark things finallyyy get interesting. From there it was a solid 4 or even 4.25 star read, cause THE ANGST. It was killing me. I really really don't know when i went from "ehh where is the flavour in your love story" to "omg bish, why are you doing this to him.. just love him back!!!" I really don't know, but it happened and I👏🏽. was👏🏽. hurt👏🏽. When things get spicy or in this case go to complete shit there is a time jump and uhh i was not ready.
//spoilers// ~ ~ ~ There is a five year time jump when Livy thinks Slade has died and she meets him again when he is security man working with a client she's working with and he is married.. The fuck??? Thank god the marriage is more of a marriage of convenience cause after the incident when everyone thought Slade died, he needed to get a new identity and made some deal with Livy's father to never contact Livy again while he has to marry OW for the new identity.
"Some loves are once in a lifetime."

So yeeah as I said a lot of angst and I usually don't dig too much angst, but this time it was good! The ending is very bittersweet tho.
//spoilers// ~ ~ ~ Livy and Slade have a HEA, but it's still hurting my heart thinking about it, cause Livy had to say goodbye to her old life and her dad whom she has an AMAZING relationship with. To be able to be with Slade she has to change her identity and fake her death and leave everything behind so that sucks 🙈

Because of the boring first half of the book, I can't rate it any higher than 3-3.25 stars even though the last third was really good.

i was super into this for the most part. i sure do love a brooding, tortured love interest who gives off ‘you touch her and you die’ kind of vibes. lol.

but as the story progresses and information starts coming to light, things get more intense, which is to be expected from a romantic suspense novel. but its in a way where it feels like the plot snowballs into a really rushed ending with so many things coming out of left field. it created a major disconnect between the first 3/4 and the ending and that left me feeling a little unsatisfied.

but overall this is a very entertaining read. i would consider it on the light side of suspense with more of a focus on the romance, so its a good gateway book for anyone looking to get into the genre. the writing is engaging and the characters are easy to read about, so im gonna round up on this one.

Jewel's 'Jack & Jill' series is what made me fall in love with this author so easily, that series was beyond my wildest dreams, beyond unique, beyond anything I could've asked for, so when I saw she was writing yet another book within that series I was was giddy with excitement!!

My review isn't going to do the justice this book deserves because I'm speechless and I don't really know where to start lol

Livy and Slade will own your soul wholeheartedly from the suspense to the angst to all the drama in between, tears will flow, hearts will break, but at the end of it you'll come out with a heart full of love, these two were perfectly imperfect but perfect for each other.

I have no idea what I read because I read this from front to back in one sitting, GAH that is rare even for me!! My house is a dive, I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards and my partner is giving me the stink eye because I'm raving about characters and a book I absolutely LOVED!!

This author fast became one of my unicorn one click even if I got an arc author, an author I recommend time and time again, everything she writes turns into gold, if she rewrote the phone book I'd probably end up reading it and raving about that too!! Na scrub that, that's a lie lol

This book here was one I was highly anticipating, and once it landed on my trust bible (my ipad) life as I knew it was turned off, I devoured it, I loved it, the amount of times I giggled were priceless. The amount of times I swooned were too many times to count. To say I loved this book is an understatement!! Every emotion was wrung out of me, a rollercoaster of feels which I never wanted to end.

Best way to read this is go back to where it all kicked off with Jack & Jill and binge that from front to back!!

“Either you die, or you’re born again. But you’re never the same.”

Jewel E. Ann is such a talented author and I love that she writes such unique romances. I have never read her ‘Jack and Jill’ series so this world was entirely new to me. I enjoyed this book so much, but I think I would have loved it more had I had the background other readers did.

Within the first few pages of this book, it’s established that Livy Knight has a majority overprotective father. She’s now in college and a few hours away from her father. She has a mysterious new neighbor and she wants to know more about him. Livy is too curious for her own good.

Slade Wylder is an enigma. He gives out the keep away vibe to pretty much everyone, but Livy doesn’t heed it. Livy and Slade have a complicated relationship from the start. The more I found out about Slade, the more I rooted for him. But there were moments, towards the end, I was so heartbroken. Still, the ending overall made me happy. I just wanted more.

As much as I loved Livy and Slade, Jericho stole the show for me. I adore pets in books, especially one like him. He was exactly what this couple needed and was there for them during the hard times. The romance in this was complex, but the love these two had for one another was beautiful.

Out of Love had romance, a bit of mystery/suspense, and lots of action. It was a fast paced read that kept my attention all the way through. I wish we would have got an extended epilogue- there was something I was really curious about, but maybe we’ll get more from this world!
My lover. My protector. My world. My monster.

Wow, with this book, Jewel E. Ann proves once again why she is the queen of angst. I started and finished in one go, and my puffy baggy eyes make me look like I am having some kind of allergic shellfish reaction. Totally worth it though!!

Now I won't be going into the actual plotline and I won't be revealing anything really, so you will all just have to make do with me gushing my feelings about this book. This one should definitely be read blind...

I fell deeply in love with both the hero and heroine, they were awesome and I had not one single moment of annoyance with either one of them... which is rare let me tell you. The side-characters were amazing, and I want to give some extra credit to my favorite secondary character Jerry :P

This book made me cry, yell, laugh, and swoon... I had all of the feelz... and sometimes within the same page even!!! Jewel managed to rip my heart out but thankfully she was nice enough to put it back in... it's a little worse for wear though. Now, what more could a book nerd like myself ask for??

https://www.google.com/search?q=not a damn thing gif

I highly recommend this one, and anything else written by this author really. I do have a confession to make. This book is sort of a little spin-off from Jewel E Anne's Jack and Jill series. And I am deeply ashamed that I have to admit that I have never read those books... Yeah I know, stop looking at me like that!!!

At least now I know what I will be doing next ;)

Either you die, or you’re born again. But you’re never the same.”

Actual footage of me while reading this book:

Holy mother of all plot twists, what did I just read?!

So first of all, confession time. I'm a little nervous here because I know I'm going to get side eyes from all of you judgy jundgersons, but it is what it is. It's been years since I've read a Jewel. E. Ann book. *hides* I'll give you a minute to contain your shock. I know. I know. I don't even know why myself. But just know that I'm already kicking my own ass for this sin. Because that's what it was if this is the kind of books I've been missing out on.

Now I did go back and rectify it by reading the Jack and Jill series. Which is the world this book is set in. But that's the only thing I'll tell you about the connection. You'll have to read the rest for yourself. Trust me on this.

Livy is one of the most vivacious, sexually positive heroines I've had the pleasure to read recently. This is a woman that's not afraid to want what she wants and to go after it. And the second the grumpy and mysterious Slade and his dog appear in her orbit, nothing will ever be the same. Sade hates her at first sigh. He doesn't exactly hide his hatred either. He barely spars her a glance and calls the cops on her on one occasion. This was enemies to lovers on a whole other level, people.
Slade Wylder reminded me of the Grim Reaper—minus the scythe—cloaked in black, right down to his car and its windows. Eyes so dark they appeared hollow from a distance.

But Liv is nothing if not determined, and she's determined to wear the man down. What begins to unravel is one jaw dropping page after another. There's plenty of secrets buried and when they begin to surface, you won't have time to pick your jaw off of the floor before another one comes at you.

Live was this beautiful free spirit that loved and loved hard. Her over protective father did nothing to deter her from her boy chasing ways. But Slade is definitely not a boy and he's certainly not at all what he seems.

I don't even know what else to tell you about this book aside from the fact that I couldn't put it down. The angst, the secrets, the suspense. All of it masterfully crafted and interwoven between one unforgettable romance that should have never happened but did. I'm desperately hoping that we'll be getting more books set in this world because there's one thing that is left hanging that I need a resolution for. Not even need. DESPERATE for.

When Jewel E. Ann mentioned that she was going to write a fourth book in the Jack & Jill universe I was first and foremost excited and then a little nervous because the trilogy is an all time favorite of mine. How would she write another story in that universe and would it be up to par with the previous three books.
Let me tell you that Out of Love is out of this world. Truly a fantastic experience. It can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the series. For me Out Of Love was such a special book because of my investment in the characters I had formed from reading the J & J series. The journey Livy and Slade embarked upon moved me more than I realized. Choices had to be made and lies revealed. Here in Out of Love it was just elevated to another level. It’s that good!

It has a mysterious and suspenseful feel all because of Slade Wylder. The sassy Livy Knight delivers the humor and proves why she’s a true Knight! These two gave me some amazing banter and sizzling chemistry. Most of all a love that developed slowly and turned into an all consuming one. It wasn’t an easy love. It had lies and heartbreak as it should have. The reward is just that much sweeter. Believe me it was!

Livy’s dad and aunt was part of the story and it was like coming home. Jackson and Jessica has an incredible bond and it’s stronger than ever.
Out of Love took me on an emotional roller coaster. Jewel E. Ann always delivers the twists and all the feels. Her writing and storytelling is exceptional. The characters have a strong well developed arc and how it all comes together in the end is executed to perfection.

I’m so glad Ann chose to write this book cause I wasn’t done with these fantastic characters when I read the Jack & Jill trilogy. This is a fresh take on a book that can be read as a stand-alone and yet for fans of the series it’s a fabulous addition. I loved it! After finishing Out of Love I can honestly say that I want more. I adored Livy and Slade. Their love story had it all. Jackson Knight! I need more. More of the Knight family. Please.......

Is 54 too young to die from heartbreak?
#AskingForMyAchyBreakyHeart..
I just closed the kindle on yet another masterpiece by this Queen of Angst and I am speechless.
Phenomenal. Outstanding. Unputdownable.
Let me state this first. Jack & Jill series is one of the BESTEST series ever written..EVER!! To continue it and to do it in the same vein, to catch the same mood, on the same velocity (J&J was pretty racy) is a major feat in itself and Jewel manages to ace it like a Boss!!
It's like she never took a break in between these books. B.R.I.L.L.I.A.N.T.🌷 she drives this juggernaut into yet another territory with same aplomb and trademark humor and sass, it leaves me in awe of her immeasurable talent

description

Every story of hers becomes my new favorite, my new obsession.
In this one, The Hero is Tall, Dark and one hundred percent Asshole. The heroine is Sassy, mouthy, intelligent and a collector of moments.
The story as a whole is-> Vulnerable. Frightened. Suicidal.
Two Stupid, crazy, impulsive hearts, hell bent on destroying each other and burn downthe world together.
The incredible graph of intimacy shoots like a rocket. The explosive relationship starts out as two stubborn people who are at logger heads from the time they set their eyes on each other. The chemistry builds up to Lasvicious palpitations and cant-breathe-without-each-other Love. A slow burn romance with depth, and a dark aura of mystery surrounding the love bubble, this book will chill you and thrill you like no other.
“So that’s what it feels like?”
“Loving someone without reason? Having your heart broken?”

Oh Gawd, it felt like thousand knives stabbed my heart for eternity!!.

As soon as I was few chapters in, I knew this was going to be an EPIC READ
"Love was supposed to heal all wounds, not rip apart souls."
But this is Jewel we're talking about..right!
she makes us laugh, makes us cry ; makes us ask the reason WHYYYYYY😭
Jewel's sucker punch landed in my gut and I just doubled over. This story has taken out everything from my heart and then some.
It's part Sexy, love story, part Heart-thumping thriller against the backdrop of nefarious crimes that come back to haunt them all.
There's some new characters, some older ones, just surfing to perfection on waves of emotions.
"He wasn't Mine, but I was his"

Oh yes THE EMOTIONS are all there in spectacular glory. Will make your panties moist and eyes Moist-er.
And then there's THE WAR between past & present, between Job and responsibility, between want & need, between Fight or Flight.

Once again Jewel E Anne brought her A game to this story and this one completely took me by surprise! My only regret is that I never got a chance to read her Jack and Jill series because if I had, I would’ve appreciated this story so much more. If I felt the pain and sorrow with these characters, can you imagine what it would have been like if I had known the side characters and got to experience their story? It would have been EPIC!!

Twenty one year old College Senior Livy knows exactly what she wants when it comes to her career. She’s determined, strong willed, and the highlight of her days are surfing and hanging with her girls. With an overprotective father now miles away, Livy is hell bent on making this year her best. But when she meets the new brooding student who could care less about her, her plan for a smooth year is going to be one bumpy and deadly ride.

giphy-55.gif

I was content with reading a new adult romance that was going to be filled with angst and a little bit of mystery. This story took a completely different turn and I did not see that coming. It was mysterious sure, but it had buried secrets, betrayal, heartbreak and twists that will have you pleading to be put out of your angst misery. Livy not only endured a lot, but so did her family and you saw their strength in unforgiving times and felt the love in healing moments. It was passionate, sexy, and when you add in the mystery? Game over.

10923346.gif

I really liked that this book was a complete standalone because it was based off of another character and her journey. I never felt like I was missing anything and I loved how the story flowed. I wanted more and I needed to know everything about these characters. If you were a fan of the previous books, then you’re going to love this one and fall in love with your favorite characters all over again.

wow what a book!!!

LOVED the first half. It gave me my favorite college vibes, with a bad boy love interest, and an adorable dog. Also the couple had fantastic chemistry. Overall, exactly what I like in a NA novel.

Although the Jack & Jill series is not one of my favorites, I can appreciate how the author managed to bring the vibe of that series into Out of Love. Especially in the second half. It becomes more intense, more emotional, and the author knows how to break a heart.

So, in the end the book was entertaining and a great addition to the series.

Livy Knight is from San Francisco, and has an overprotective dad who thinks nobody is good enough for his little girl. Since she was fifteen he's managed to scare off any guy she's been interested in. College is her chance to finally be free to make her own decisions. She's an impulsive free spirit that thrives on the unknown, and always seems to be drawn to men her father wouldn't approve of.

43E59D45_2110_4A10_8EDB_066E3F282C12

Then she crosses paths with a mysterious, intense guy named Slade Wylder. He's a jerk in need of a personality transplant, but he has her attention. It had been a while since someone had caught her interest, but he becomes her favorite distraction. She enjoys messing with him and getting under his skin, and wants to figure him out. He was like a turbulent storm cloud, full of attitude, but sexy as hell. One look from him completely slayed her, and made her inappropriate thoughts run wild. He was an enigma and she craved more, but would her suspicious, curious mind get her into trouble? When truths are revealed will he be her savior or her worst nightmare? She had a feeling if she let him get too close, he might not just break her heart, but shatter it beyond repair.

-Wylder lit up every inch of me.

-That gaze... gah! It shot a million jolts of adrenaline and anticipation racing through my veins.

-Slade Wylder would take me so completely I would never be the same.

-I was his... and he was mine.

Out of Love by Jewel E. Ann is a passionate, emotional, captivating, enemies to lovers college romance full of secrets, lies, mystery, suspense, angst, danger and love. It's connected to the author's Jack & Jill series, but can be read as a standalone. I have not read the Jack & Jill series yet, and adored this book! Hold onto your hearts, ladies. Slade Wylder is about to steal it, crush it, and scatter the pieces.
I haven't read a book this hot in forever. The romance seduced me from page one. The suspense played with my nerves, and the ending delivered all the feels.
Livy Knight is gutsy and driven. Slade is dark and mysterious. Together, they're an angsty cocktail of sexual tension and explosive chemistry. God, I loved this book. Hard.

5 incredible stars

‘My lover. My protector. My world. My monster…’
‘My heart? It leaped, free-falling into Slade Wylder’s world.
Vulnerable.
Frightened.
Suicidal.
Stupid, crazy, impulsive heart.’

Jewel E. Ann wrote one of our favourite series in Jack and Jill , so we cannot tell you how excited we were to read this standalone spin-off, which features Jackson’s daughter, Livy. This Author is a magnificent writer and this series is perfect proof of that. Jewel E. Ann manages to thread angst, heat, love and suspense into one hell of a fantastic story that has that underlying fierceness and sarcasm we love so much. Jack and Jill was an epic love story with Out of Love being the icing on top of an extremely emotionally layered cake of outstanding tastiness. We were gripped completely and emotionally invested from the first page ’till the last. Shedding so many tears, needing copious freezer time, and laughing out loud.

“I know you think I’m overprotective, but there is nothing I wouldn’t do to protect you.”
“I know. And I love you for it.”

Our hearts…they furiously beat to the tone of the words, in amidst the laughs and the tears. Such a beautiful, exciting and thrilling love story. To be back with Jessica and Jackson was just wonderful, we cannot begin to explain how much we love these epic characters. Jewel E. Ann managed something quite extraordinary in Out of Love, this lady truly has an incredible talent and we are in awe of how amazing Out of Love was and how it made us feel. We were immediately transported back into the Jack & Jill world and felt as if we never left, such was the impact of this Author’s words.

“Did you know he slept on her grave for days while you were with your aunt? I watched him. I fed off his suffering.”

The time has arrived for Livy Knight to move away to college and leave her overprotective dad behind. Whilst yes, Livy is excited and embracing life with clear goals, she’s also living like a free spirit in the waves, unconsciously looking for a man who’s just like her dad. With that, comes, danger, betrayal, violence and heartbreak. Does anything really phase her though? She may be feisty, slightly manic in behaviour and a complete free spirit, yet her heart is big and vulnerable, and in many respects, she reminded us of her aunt Jessica! So, when she meets the mysterious and menacing-looking Slade Wylder, she cannot stay away. She’s mesmerised, perhaps even a tad obsessed. She knows he harbours deep dark secrets, his disappearances haunts her, his whole persona is stand-off-ish. But she cannot look away, stay away or even ignore the depth of her connection with him. Is she scared of him -yes and no- is he an arsehole, a resounding yes, but the heart wants what it wants and we cannot blame Liv for that, ours wanted him too.

“Wylder…I have a feeling you’re not going to like this…but I’m not going to be able to stop myself from doing it anyway.”
“What’s that?”
“Loving you.”

We wanted -no needed- this story to never end. Never. We finished Out of Love and wanted to start from the beginning again. We fell in love, deep deep love with Livy and with Wylder. Their story is compelling, dark, funny, sweet, hot! and so addictive. We felt like we were coming home amongst friends with Jackson and Jessica, needing more, wanting to catch up and spend time with them. We could never be done with this series. We love when our emotions are pulled through the wringer, we love when we have no idea where a story is going, we love uncovering a character; layer by layer. And we love when we laugh out loud and cry big fat ugly tears in the same breath. Oh and we love dogs too, so Jerry –sorry Wylder– Jericho stole our hearts too!

“Feel it?”
“What, Liv?”
“Wanting something so much it hurts.”

☆ UH-FREAKEN-MAZING!!! ☆

Well done. What a fantastic ride. When the author announced this 4th book (spinoff) of Jack and Jill series I didn’t know what to expect but you better believe I was stoked. I was 100% intrigued by the title. And when Jewel E Ann said... "Whatever you're thinking this will be. It's not." She. Wasn't. Lying.

This author did a fabulous job giving us a little bit more of past amazing characters we LOVE and making us fall in love with the new characters.
~ Slade Wylder and Livy Knight ~

☆ Love was supposed to heal all wounds, not rip apart souls. ☆

We get so much action, suspense, emotions. This is an Edge of your seat read.
I love that I can always count on some good laughs with every JEA book...Right before she breaks my heart. Yup!
Yeah. Sure she always puts it back together but Still 😭 the pain feels real. And I obviously love it.

I love how much Livy loved and respected her dad even when she thought he was overprotective and it annoyed her. I love Livy! This Father/Daughter relationship was #Goals

As I write this I can still feel all the love Jackson has to give. I want to cry for him. I want to hug him. And my heart melts for him all over again. This book isn't about him however the short appearances he makes in the story completely filled my heart.

This is Livy and Wylder's story.
♡ Wylder the sexy, serious, mysterious and wonderful man. A lot more like her daddy than Livy would want to admit to. LOL

*NOTE* OUT OF LOVE Can be read as a standalone.

Since it is a spinoff you might get a spoiler of the series. I'd say read all the books because they are life changing.
~ The Jack & Jill series If Jewel E. Ann keeps giving me more from this world I'm just gonna keep needing MORE!!! It's never enough. I'm greedy.

I love this world and these characters!!!

5 Stars!!!

"I had this feeling … a terrible unexplainable feeling that he wasn’t simply going to break my heart, he was going to shatter it beyond repair. And I would live my life as a jaded lover who would never trust another man again.

This by far is Jewel's best work to date.  It has a perfect balance of fun, sweet, ANGST, steam, mystery and love.

description

My suggestion is to go in blind,  so as not to accidentally read any spoilers and ruin your enjoyment.

I'll be honest. I requested this book with the knowledge (or so I thought)  that this book is about Luke Jones. Imagine my horror when I finally get to read the name of the hero.

description

Slade who??!  then the blurb was revealed....really intriguing  and it's by Jewel, so even without Luke, I'm good.

Enough of that,  Who's it for some grumpy mysterious hero?

description

Oh, and he owns an adorable dog too, so that's a plus.  😍

I love Slade's mysterious character.  I  was actually trying to guess his occupation from the very start.  Thought I was smart enough to have guessed it right.  I was wrong.

description

The story was light in the beginning. But upon reaching around 60% mark.. BAM!! Full blown roller coaster ride.

description

Yep! That's me at the back.  Totally not expecting this. BUT what's the fun in reading  if it's expected?  So this is me during the angst journey. TOTALLY enjoying every bit of it.

description

From flirty to nerve-wracking situation with its outstanding twist that had me gripping my kindle, flipping pages after pages till the wee hours.

It's heartbreaking and painstakingly beautiful. I love it and I really am not ready to let go of these characters. My only hope is to have a LONGER epilogue. Still,  I  highly recommend this book.

description

Will this spinoff be the end of the Jack and Jill series?  Who knows?  I'm crossing my fingers though. 😁  BTW, This book could be read as a standalone.

Somewhere he began and I ended, but I had no clue where.

THIS BOOK WAS SO SO SO GOOD. It was fun, fast, sweet, sexy, sassy, emotional, and just plain amazing. I loved this book and I’m only sad that their isn’t more Livy and Wylder. I feel like I could read little pieces of them forever. She’s sunshine and he’s grumpy. I just, this book served so much greatness. Of course there are twists and turns, but I saw a few of them coming. Some of them really made me itchy and mad, but in the end all things considered I was happy. Ugh. I miss them already. I wasn’t expecting this book to blow me away so much and it did.

I didn’t read the first books that this spun off of, but I still had a pretty good grasp on what they were about and so it was easy to read this one. But I do feel like this can be read standalone, this will spoil happenings for those books, but yeah. Worth it.

“Because I LOVE YOU!” he roared, anger erupting like hot lava from every inch of his tense body. “I would walk through the flames of Hell for you. I would let someone torture me to protect you. I would die the worst fucking death in the world for you.” His breaths surged from his heaving chest as his eyes reddened. “I love you …” He clenched his jaw, holding onto his emotions that threatened his eyes. “Even if you can’t love me back.”

OMFG no one told me I'd go through 5 boxes of tissues while reading this AMAZING BOOK.

I'm going to keep this review super vague...but you can thank me later when your mind is blown. 😉

I'm not gonna lie, when I heard JEA was writing a spinoff of the beloved Jack and Jill series, I was super nervous because it's one of my all time favorite series. Well, Out of Love was absolutely amazing and the perfect addition to this world...and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to read it because Jewel absolutely killed it.

If you thought Jackson Knight was sexy AF before, wait until you meet him as a father.

description

Livy Knight is strong and independent with a heart of gold, the perfect blend of Jackson and Ryn. And Slade Wylder, oh lord, that man gives Luke Jones a run for his money.

description

There's a really cute, loyal dog too. His name is Jericho, and you're going to love him.

description

This is definitely a 2021 favorite and a book I won't forget.

I have been such a huge fan of Jewel E. Ann’s ever since I read Look the Part and fell head over heels in love with that book and her writing! So I was crazy excited to read a new romance, this time set in college, with a good dose of suspense, and with plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed Out of Love so much – the romance is engaging and fascinating. I enjoyed the main characters Livy and Slade, I LOVED Slade’s dog, and the college, new adult vibes were so much fun. I also didn’t realize this until halfway through the story, but Out of Love is a spinoff of JEA’s previous Jack & Jill series, featuring Livy’s parents and her aunt. Now I want to go back and try that series out!

Livy Knight is a bit of a wild child. She’s lived with her overbearing, overprotective father and now that she’s alone in college, she’s going to make the most of her freedom. It’s the start of a new school year and in one of her classes is the school’s biggest enigma and loner, Slade Wylder. There are rumors that he’s a dangerous man, but that doesn’t stop Livy from trying to get close to him, and his German Shepard Jericho. And luckily for her, Slade and Jerry live just down the street from her in an old, haunted firehouse.

I adored Livy and her feistiness! She never let Slade’s asshole ways get to her. And he can be a JERK. They fall in love a bit too fast for my liking, but I always enjoyed anytime these two characters were in a room together, because sparks flew. Slade and his strange job are a mystery to Livy, though it is fairly easy to predict what it is. The last third of the book is where all the craziness happens and everything starts to come together. I enjoyed the suspenseful aspect of this book, but I do have to say I loved the regular, college romance part just a liiittle bit more.

Overall, this is a great standalone if you want your new adult romances a little more exciting and with some action. The writing is great, the characters are fun, and again, I loved Slade’s dog so much! I don’t know why we don’t have more romance books with animal sidekicks, because they always steal the show.

Out of Love was really good., but it didn't hold a candle to the brilliance that was The Jack & Jill Series

Why the Knights can't have it easy just for a change???

Edit To Come

I think Jewel E Ann just became my new addiction!

Out of Love is a spin of to another of her series. One that I'll read ASAP, because yeah... I've listened to this book without reading Jack and Jill first... I didn't knew it was related to other series, until I was really interested in Livy's Dad (Jackson Knight) own story!

But back to this book and Livy and Wylder's story... I just love it!
It's a classical case of sunshine girl and grumpy guy, but at the same time, it's full of mystery, emotions, assassins, twists and turns.

She was intrigued by him and his German Shepard, that accompanied him even during their college classes, so as a curious sunshine, she tried to make a friend out of him... Well... That didn't go too well for her... At least not at first (or second).

Until something bad happens, and the one that didn't even spares her a glance before, was the one to save her from an attack.

Their relationship evolved from annoying neighbors, to some kind of mutual love for his dog, to an undeniable attraction, that they couldn't stop feeling.

Slade Wylder was hot, mysterious, quiet, grumpy and he practically didn't say nothing to Livy other than bark a few threats, but I could understand her drawn to him as a moth to a flame!
What can I say? I'm a lost cause when it comes to the broken silence and mysterious bad boy.

But he held many secrets... As much as her dad, and those secrets probably weren't a secret to those who read Jack and Jill series, but to me? Holy cow! Her dad did really a bunch of questionable things at the end, and took protectives to a whole new level!

Jericho (the dog) is almost like another main character, and I loved all the scenes that he was in it!

It was a great story and I couldn't put it down! I still have a couple of questions aftee that end... But I guess that those questions where purposely left unanswered...

About the audiobook...
The narration was by a single woman, and again, I did prefer when I have male narrator for the Male POV chapters, so she did a great job bringing in the emotions and the right tones into the story, but her male voice isn't of an alpha male like Wylder or Jackson, so I missed their voices.

4.5 ⭐'s

“Fuck...I’ve met my match.”

I want to start off by saying I read the Jack and Jill series back in 2016 and I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't remember some vital information but I'm happy to report, there's nothing to worry about.

This story is about Livy, Jackson's daughter. Livy is off to college and meets Slade in one of her classes. Well, "meets" is a strong term as he wants nothing to do with her but she is quite "pesky" and doesn't give up trying to figure out who he is.

And it only helps her when she finds out he lives across the street in an old firehouse that has some sordid history. There are lots of rumors about Slade and Livy slowly finds out which are true and which are not.

Livy is a pretty carefree person. She's really smart so she doesn't need to study that much and that leads to her hitting the waves pretty much every day. That all changes one night.

Livy is actually handling things pretty well but it helps when Slade sends his german shepherd, Jericho, aka Jerry, to stay with Livy. Fortunately for her, that causes them to interact even more.

There is that same underlying drama/mystery that was in the Jack and Jill series and it leads to some crazy events. However, I really enjoyed getting more Jackson in the story and definitely having Jess involved made things so much better.

Slade and Livy were really sweet together. I LOVED getting his POV. It was wonderful reading what he actually thought instead of that icy exterior.

The ending has all kinds of drama and angst. I really didn't want it to end. I'm not quite sure how I feel about how things were left off....this surely can't be the end?

3.5 ⭐️

”I would walk through the flames of Hell for you. I would let someone torture me to protect you. I would die the worst fucking death in the world for you.”

“Choose me, Livy.”

Synopsis: Livvy meets a guy in college who blows her off and is rude. So, what does she do??? Chases after him. Along the way she learns some things about him and her family that are life changing.

My Thoughts: The following are my thoughts about this book:
General:
- Trigger warning-attempted rape
- Setting: California

Characters:
- Slade (age:25, assassin):
- The following words/phrases were used to describe Slade: agitated, abrasive, dark, unreadable soul

- Livvy (age: 21, college student):
- The following words/phrases were used to describe Livvy: surfer, curious, highly suspicious

Story thoughts:
- It was Chapter 8 before I got Slade’s POV. At first I thought this was a great tactic because it built up a lot of mystery surrounding him so that by the time I got to his POV I was salivating for more about Slade. But, then it went right back to Livvy’s POV for several more chapters 😏 Unfortunately I had to wait a really long time to get Slade’s full backstory and I thought it came way too late in the book (around 60%)

- The blurb made it sound like this would be a dark book. It mentioned conspiracies, serial killers, haunted house, drug dealers, “dark” moments. So clearly I thought this would have a darker vibe. Not so. The blurb is incredibly misleading.

- The first half kind of dragged. At 60% I was still waiting for the action to begin.

- Livvy is the daughter of Jackson & Ryn from the Jack and Jill series. Jackson is now a widower, so the author destroyed the HEA from that series to create this book. Why do that??? It didn’t enhance the story. And, this will clearly upset people who loved the J&J series.

- And, Jackson has suffered enough, so the ending of this book made me sad for him. I closed the book not entirely happy.

- The dark history of Slade’s house added no value to the story. And, the blurb trying to indicate it was haunted.....false. There wasn’t even one “unexplained” noise.

Overview:
- Do you need to read previous books in series?: Yes. I would say there is enough “missing” backstory that you should read the Jack & Jill series first.
- POV: mostly from Livvy’s POV. Only a few chapters have Slade’s viewpoint
- H likable? Yes. He had a mysterious vibe in the beginning that was intriguing.
- h likable? Yes. In the beginning I found her curious and confident. Later on she became more unsure of herself, but I guess that was to be expected after what she experienced.
- anyone a virgin? no
- First time they kiss: 31%
- First time they sleep together: 35%
- First time they say I Love You 49%
- steamy? Yes. Descriptive bedroom scenes
- OW/OM drama? yes. Another woman enters the picture near the end of the book.
- H/h cheat? Yes. H sleeps with h while he is with someone else
- Time apart? yes. 5 years
- Did I skip pages? No
- Big secrets? yes. Slade’s secrets are revealed around 63%
- Did I cry? yes.
- Did I laugh? no
- Cliffhanger? no
- HEA? the H & h are together. But, I'm not entirely pleased with the ending and I closed the book just a little sad for the couple and their families
- Epilogue? yes. Epilogue 1: 7 months later. Epilogue 2: a year after Epilogue 1
- Recommend? for the most part I was entertained, but there were a few things that bothered me

Quotes
“Slade Wylder hovered near me like a storm cloud, sending sparks of electricity through my veins and chills along my skin while siphoning oxygen from my lungs.”

“My Aunt Jessica told me something happened to her as a teenager that changed her—irreparably damaged her—forever. She said, “Either you die, or you’re born again. But you’re never the same.”

“I closed my eyes and lassoed that moment. The moment I realized I’d kissed a million wrong people in my journey to him.”

“If you’re in … you’re all in.”

“She knew my secret—and she stayed.”

“I loved the monster because I loved the man first.”

“Goals are the future we’ll never have, dreams are the future we’re too afraid to have, and reality is what you never could have imagined.”
