Story Behind the Book

After Josh gave a message on lust entitled " Destroy It or Be Destroyed" (which was originally prepared for an all-male audience), he was surprised by the widespread request from women to be allowed to listen to a tape of the message. They heard the guys talking about the message and wanted it for themselves. And not because they wanted to "understand men," but because they too struggled with lust. "Ladies deal with this, too," they told him. "We often feel like something is wrong with us and so we never bring it out in the open, which only makes it worse."

So after much prayer and counsel, he decided to make his book for both sexes. Though Not Even a Hint is written for men and women, he strongly believe’s that the topic of lust is not appropriate for men and women to discuss. Women should find other women they can work together with to fight the sin of lust, which is why we’ve created separate study guides for men and women to take you further on the journey to holiness.

Shanon is a better writer than Harris, but the books lacks information of neuroscience and other research data.

I found this book in Angela's living room cabinet. The title itself was stimulating, and I wasn't sure how to define lust. What it seemed as a 'light read' grappled my heart with some insights.

-Anyone besieged by temptation or battling with sexual lust, this will encourage sexual purity, challenge to stop playing hide-and-seek with lust, and prevent our minds to become 'the devil's playground.'

Biblical definition of lust:
(Ephesians 5:3) But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.

-God wants to dig down into our hearts and uproot sexual greediness, which is always seeking a new sensual thrill. But if you're feeling like the bar is hopelessly high, don't give up. That's exactly what you should be feeling...

-I desire them to desire me. Often those who feel the safest are the most at risk (1 Cor 10:12).
-Don't grow weary. Consistency in the little areas will slowly strengthen you spiritually.
J-ust as compromise adds up, so your faithful investments into holiness will grow too.

-It takes God's design then lust distorts it.

-Men are tempted by the pleasure lust offers (sensual "feel good" pleasure), while women are tempted by the power lust promises (fantasy about a relationship using sexuality).

-Prayer request: love holiness and avoid the wrong visions of femininity the world constantly offers. Be virtuous, not seductive. It will accomplish more than you can imagine.

*Most vulnerable target: alone, isolated, without accountability*

*God calls you through it. On the other side of sacrifice is unspeakable beauty and indescribable joy. It's not easy, but it's worth every minute.

1. List your own top three lust triggers. How can you avoid them?
2. What time of day or week are you most tempted by lust? What can you do to prepare for those times?
3. Which locations are the most tempting for you? How can you limit your time in those places?
4. What five little battles do you need to be fighting more faithfully? Describe in detail what it looks like for you to fight-and win-these battles.

I just re-read this for a talk I was giving. I was amazed at how good it was, and how relevant it still is even though it was published in 2003. Dont jettison this one if youre wanting to deal with the subject matter or finding great struggle in the area.

"ultimately, lust doesn't want sex. it wants the forbidden, and its willing to take you deeper and deeper into perversion if you'll indulge its latest request."
