I read it with some chapters skipped but it’s not for me. I don’t like it when characters go hot & cold on and on…. I get the concept but there was nothing surprising or to make me want read chapters I skipped 🤷🏼♀️
This was 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Xavier Johnson is the star football star who decides to fake-date the sister of a rookie player on the team. Emma is willing to fake date the player to ensure that Xavier helps her brother make the team through advising him on how to make it in the pros. There was a little too much going on here without any resolution.

Emma fines herself in a very stressful situation. Her father has developed a very serious heat problem. Her brother is trying to get a place on the football team and because of her father’s sickness she I the one who needs to step in and help make his goal. Things aren’t looking good for him, because the coach doesn’t feel he has what it takes to earn a place of the team. Xavier, the star of the team, and Emma begin to notice each other, but while he is attracted to her she believes he is jut another jock with a big ego. He comes up with a plan that could be helpful for both of them. If she would pretend to be his girlfriend and go to charity event with him, he would help her brother train so he can make the team. It soon becomes difficult for either of them to pretend. The chapters in the story are likable and interesting. I loved the way the story flowed. It was hard to put down.
Everything started to get repetitive. They kept complaining about the same things, repeating the same fears. Their interactions just didn't hold much chemistry. Their first outing as a fake couple and lines were already blurring? They had closed door interactions before the book started and I feel that hurt the story.
I wanted more interactions, more fake dates or events. I wanted to know what happened between Xavier and his ex. There was not closure or confrontation, except when she arrived at the football field. I wanted something more dramatic, if your gonna bring in a crazy ex. Better bring the crazy!
There were not enough supportive characters. You had Jeff, Emma's brother, their dad and Holly. Xavier had no friends or family.
I'm a fan of a good sports-related story – but sadly this one wasn’t it for me.
The main characters were somewhat drab, uninteresting and underdeveloped. I didn’t feel much for either one. The storyline had big gaps and no depth – hopping from one subject to another causing a bit of whiplash. At times, there were parts where I felt what was being said didn’t fit the situation at hand – and really hurt the storytelling.
From start to finish, the flow in the writing was off. I found myself having to stop, double back and reread which threw everything out of sync.
You may think "Not another sports HEA" as so many authors have been writing about hockey and football for mamy moons. However Parker's book is simple but with complexities that keep you reading and turning the pages wanting to know how and what happens next. There may not be an exuberant amout of sexy hotness scenes but there's real emotions and decision makings scenarios that make you think what would you do in the main character's place. One of the reason's I enjoy this author's stories. Looking forward to the next one.
This book would have been pretty good if it hadn’t been sooooooooooooooooooo repetitive. Both MCs said and thought the same 3-4 things for most of the book with no variation. Towards the end the male MC revealed himself to be one of the sweetest male MCs I’ve ever come across in romance. And a fem MC who doesn’t nuke her budding relationship with her beau for shits and giggles and is actually reasonable when the male MC explains his lie by omission? Rarer than a blue moon.
Refreshing change of pace from Parker's usual Alpha males
I found this to be a very enjoyable read and a change of pace from what Parker usually writes. A few inconsistencies in the writing with Emma's hair color referred to as both blonde and auburn, and behind dressed in both pants and a skirt in the same scene, but otherwise well done. The characters are not as dark as what she usually writes, so it was a little different.
Emma and Xavier have a deal that’s supposed to be beneficial for both sides. He will have a beautiful new girlfriend to present to the public and she will have a mentor for her brother’s career. But life’s not a straight run down the field, there are some serious defensive blocks between them and the end zone.
Life is short. Take a risk. The touchdown is within reach.
This is a great playbook to read no matter how you feel about the sport.
As always another fabulous book by MS Parker. Loved the storyline and the connection between Xavier and Emma. Their chemistry was off the charts when they got together. Relieved that Emma's Dad was ok in the end and that Jeff had won his place on the team. A brilliant book starting off another brilliant series.
This was a great read. Emma gave it all to help her brother on the football team by going out with a teammate Xavier. It was a fake relationship. Looking forward to seeing what this author brings us next
I love sports based stories anyway so this was a TREAT! Xavier and Emma just made the perfect storm until they became the perfect couple! I can't wait for the next book already. I'm hoping that Xavier and Emma are settled down and it's Jeff's turn!
I am happy there wasn’t one ‘big’ issue that drove them apart about 80% in. You knew what the problem was almost right from the beginning. He solved the issue and got the girl by caring and being kind.
