I have never read this author but I saw this cover, liked it and thought I check her out. She only has 8 books total and only 2 in my genre.. Since she is KU, I thought why not check it out.
So this book caught my attention right away. I liked the story and I liked Charlotte and Frank. I can't really say what made it that way. Sometimes I went from, "I'm not going to read anymore" to, "I can't put it down". I don't read book descriptions anymore so had no idea where the story was going and I think that was what made me curious to see where it was going. Although at the beginning, Frank was such an ass. I think because he was different that other "ton" male characters I normally read. Can't put my finger on it. I couldn't imagine where the story was going so it kept me wanting more. I think since this was a new author and I don't know if they end in HEAs, I had to keep reading. I was really glad Charlotte stuck to her guns. I was surprised at the end ending as well. Overall it was a really good read.

This is the first time I am reading something by this author, and it looks like this is her first historical romance, from what I can see. Another one I went into with a degree of apathy - again, not on the book or author - more a reflection of my own headspace at the time.
But, again, a pleasant surprise because it was another one that took me out of my own head and I was able to escape into the story.
In this story, Charlotte Harding is a young woman who lost her mother many years before. Her parents had a loving marriage but one that was reviled by his family, because he married a woman of Spanish origin, who's father was in trade, so he was cast out of his family. After many years being alone with his daughter, he made the unexpected decision to remarry, and when he died, left almost everything to his second wife, with the expectation that she would care for Charlotte, leaving Charlotte with a minimal income, and dependent on her stepmother. When Charlotte fails to wed as she expects, she starts treating her more poorly, leading to Charlotte reaching out to her estranged relations for help.
She is taken in by her aunt and cousins, and joins them in London where they join the Season, with her aunt's friends, the Powells. Their daughter, a Society Diamond, is being formally courted by the handsome and eligible Francis Stanton, the Viscount Stanton. He is the heir to the Earl of Stanton, and has his life laid out neatly for him by his father, including a planned courtship and marriage to Helena Powell, or an otherwise acceptable match. Despite not liking his father's plans for him, Frank is wholly under the thumb of the Earl because he loves him and seeks his approval, so he falls in with the plans. While he enjoys his bachelor lifestyle, and his pleasures, he has plans to give it up for his marriage.
With her new familial connections, Charlotte and Frank end up in the same social sphere, though Frank dismisses her as a plain wallflower as he focuses on his goal of courting an acceptable future Viscountess, while still dallying with his current mistress. Charlotte accidentally plays voyeur one night when he has a tryst with his mistress, and he catches her. Because she has already resigned herself to being a spinster, being plain, with no dowry, and no social standing, she becomes bold and proposes a brief, secretive affair with the Viscount after finding out he had broken off things with his mistress. Her goal is to give herself an idea of the pleasures of the flesh and some memories to warm her thoughts in her lonely future. Frank starts to see beyond his first impression and when he uncovers her hidden passions with a kiss, agrees.
They engage in a passionate affair, with no plans to change their original plans for their separate futures. As the affair progresses, their hearts become entangled, but they still plan on ending things when Frank progresses his courtship to a proposal, because he cannot conceive of going against his father's wishes. However, because of the actions of a jealous lover from his past, their secrets are exposed and Charlotte and Frank's time together ends suddenly and Charlotte, not wanting to taint her family with her ruined reputation, and see Frank marry another, decides to leave and make a fresh start, and Frank is forced between losing Charlotte, or losing his standing in society, his wealth, and his father's approval.
Charlotte and Frank find their HEAs and it has a bit of a twist, but I love how it ended. I enjoyed the Cinderella-esque, Wallflower blooms aspect of this story as well, and how the story ended. I quite enjoyed the brotherly dynamic between Frank and his brother Jasper. I did not initially like Frank so much, but as more of his character developed, especially the part of him that is uncertain and seeks his father's approval and love, I started to empathize with him more and like him more as well.

The Viscount's Scandalous Affair by M.M. Wakefield is the first installment in The Stanton Legacy series, offering a Victorian-era historical romance with some spicy content. The story unfolds in London and follows the trope of a rakish viscount and an unconventional bluestocking. While the narrative attempts to weave a tale of desire and transformation, it has its shortcomings. The female protagonist, Charlotte, comes across as somewhat fanciful and immature, although she does display moments of backbone. The male lead, the Viscount, exhibits problematic behavior throughout the story. The secondary character of Jasper, the Viscount's younger brother, emerges as a more engaging and likable presence, however. Finally, the prose often feels forced, and the pacing remains unnaturally slow until around 30-40% into the book, which may test readers' patience. This is my first book by this author and there was a lot I liked about it. I loved the steam, the storytelling and the Jane Austen feel to the story. Her writing is very similar to Jane Austen except it has lots of spice. Charlotte Harding, the heroine reminded me of the heroine, Fanny Price in Austen's Mansfield Park.
This book started slow and it took a while to get into. I am happy that I read the reviews as many said the story picks up from 30-40% in the book so I am glad that I persevered.
Unfortunately, I could not warm to the Hero, Frank Viscount Stanton. He treated Chatlotte harshly in my opinion and I felt she deserved better than him. I did however like, his brother Jasper and I will be happy to read a book about him, if there is one coming?

While this book has its flaws in regards to pacing, it's a beautiful story. I love the way the author wove the story, and the ending was perfection. It's a completely different take on what I expected. It had all the makings of a regency/historical fiction novel. A typical, predictable noble falls in love with a country girl. I thought it was going to end with everyone accepting them together and happily ever after. What I was something much more endearing.
Charlotte is such a sweet character with a love of reading and adventure. My heart ached for how she was treated by Sylvia. I hated how everyone commented on her looks, but she was all grace and politeness. I admired her greatly for standing up for her convictions but not being rude or mean about it. She showed so much kindness and respect. I hated how horrible the ton was to her after what Frank did.
I didn't like Frank at first. The way he treated Charlotte angered me. There is so much more to her than looks, and that's all he could focus on. Then, he disrespected her by allowing her to be caught because he couldn't keep his jealousy at bay. Then, he tried to make her into a kept woman against her wishes. She deserved better. But, because of Jasper and Rupert, Frank grew up and realized what he had with Charlotte. I'm so glad with how it ended. Especially the bit with Frank and Jaspers dad. I wish there was more to that ending, but I loved it all the same.

Unfortunately, this title fell short for me. Overall, I truly did enjoy the style of writing and found myself highlighting many beautiful passages, so that is not the issue with this book. The issue is that this is NOT a historical romance which is what I was expecting going into it. This is a work of historical fiction with explicit romantic elements. Allow me to explain.
This title is painfully slow. There is a great deal of fantastic world-building and setting up of characters. However, the length in which it takes for the main characters to meet is egregious. This is a large reason why this, in my opinion, is not a work of historical romance but rather historical fiction with romantic elements.
Something that I did enjoy is how poised and composed Charlotte is with her manner of speech and handling of difficult people. With modern historical writing, characters often are too modernized and casual in their speech, which takes away some of the magic that a historical holds.
I would like to note that this book has a major issue with the overuse of exclamation points. I found it rather distracting. Additionally, there is a bit of head jumping going on- times in which the POV changes and it isn't really clear that it has. This led to a bit of confusion and rereading to correct the POV. Additionally, the physical vi*lence against a former mistress was truly heinous. I lost all respect for the character after that as it was very unsettling.
As for steam, this title uses very explicit terms. There are scenes between the MMC and another woman, MMC, and MFC, along with side characters. Variety of scene lengths and experiences.

Charlotte Harding, Lord Hugh daughter from his Spanish wife, Joanna, is gentlebred, plain, educated, bold, and quotes philosophy. Her life has been good until her stepmother decides she needs to marry and leave the house she has inherited. So she contacted Aunt Margaret as she was the only one from her fathers family that checked on her after his death. After having been proposed to badly by two men only for land her step mother offered.
Now, staying with Aunt Margaret, cousin Frederick, his wife Lady Harriet, Charlotte gets to see, be, and live in different places. She is happy until overhearing Lady Sylvia Powell and Aunt Margaret suggest a widower as her groom, calling her frumpy, plain, and low bred.
She turns down said man as she has her heart set on Lord Frances (Frank) Stanton. When she realizes he is too uppity, she settles for Lord Rupert Weston only to confirm he is just a friend.
As Lady Powell and Aunt Margaret put Charlotte in the role of chaperone for the courtship between Lady Powell daughter and Lord Stanton. She gets to see a side of him that he hides. After an unforseen accident Charlotte finds the nerve to propose an affair with Lord Stanton to sustain her in her old age as she would be a spinster.
Along the way Lord Stanton realized he was in love with Charlotte. Not wanting to anger his father he decides to have Miss Powell accept Charlotte a his fulltime mistress, which she accepts for her own sly reasons. However, Charlotte does not agree and decides to travel with her friends from home, Ruth and Robert Ellis to America to start a farm in Ohio.
From this point Frank's brother, Harper keeps advising him to marry Charlotte and let their father deal with it as he is not the one that will be living with her. When push comes to shove, what happens is a fun, frolicking adventure.
This is a blind arrogance ego comedy of blunders that will keep you surprised, laughing, and cheering for Charlotte and wanting to slack Frank. Jasper almost does. The Earl Stanton will also amaze you. Master gets a few love chapters too.

I went into reading this not knowing what to expect. I just knew I didn’t want to compare it to Bridgerton (The series-I’ve never read any of the books) because that would be unfair to this book. In the past I have shied away from reading historical romance. It’s just not my thing. However, I decided to break from my norm and give this a chance. It was slow to start but picked up throughout. Honestly I wasn’t sure if I would be able to make it through but I’m glad I stuck with it. It was better than expected.
What I loved:
-Strong FMC- she wasn’t a door mat, I love how she owned her sexuality. Rare for this period. I also loved how she stood up to those wanting to force her into a marriage she didn’t want. She was kind to her friends regardless of their social status and unapologetic about that. She also didn’t want to hurt her family no matter if it hurt her.
-Stayed true to the time period
What I didn’t:
-One main plot was around the beauty of the FMC. She wasn’t beautiful but dowry and plain, slightly overweight with some masculine features. It became redundant. What I loved:
-Strong FMC- she wasn’t a door mat, I love how she owned her sexuality. Rare for this period. I also loved how she stood up to those wanting to force her into a marriage she didn’t want. She was kind to her friends regardless of their social status and unapologetic about that. She also didn’t want to hurt her family no matter if it hurt her.
-Stayed true to the time period
What I didn’t:
-One main plot was around the beauty of the FMC. She wasn’t beautiful but dowry and plain, slightly overweight with some masculine features. It became redundant. This book starts very slow and I nearly gave up, but I’m glad I didn’t. It took a while to establish the main characters and for me to warm to them, but once they’re fully there and finally meet, the pace picks up and it becomes a rather delicious story.
Charlotte’s motto is onwards and upwards. She takes everything life throws at her and looks for a way to make it better. She knows she isn’t a great catch and that spinsterhood is most likely her future. So, when she sees an opening for some of life’s more passionate and intimate experiences, she makes the man haunting her dreams an offer he can’t resist.
Francis, the viscount, is a pompous entitled arse, but he had it drilled into him by his father from a young age. What starts as a show of power, soon turns into longing and yes, a little bit of jealousy. Then again, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. He’s torn between honour and heart - an inner struggle that takes him a good while to figure out. He doesn’t want to let down his exacting father to the point he nearly forgets about his own happiness.
Add in a little spice, a spiteful mistress, a too-perfect-to-be-true fiancé and an insightful little brother, and you get a interesting and captivating plot. These MCs are far from perfect and the character growth is impressive. I really enjoyed their open, honest and direct liaison. No lies, no secrets. And I really loved how strong and decisive she acts in the end. Doofus catches up in the end with a little push from his brother, and makes the grand romantic gesture - no, it’s not what you expect. The end has a really good and unique twist that makes this book more than worthwhile! I recommend finding out for yourself!

Very well written, is slow to start but then picks up quickly. Full of drama, love, romance, intrigue, society, vanity, steam, history, with twists and turns. Charlotte is a young lady whose father marries outside his class and is banned by his family and society. After her mother's death, her father remarries and the step mother is not very nice . She tries to marry her off to someone that Charlotte has no feelings for just to be rid of her. Charlotte writes to her father's family in hopes that they will take her in. She expects the same treatment from them but is surprised that they give her support. Charlotte meets Frank , who she falls for right away but he really doesn't want or see her. Charlotte offers herself to Frank as she wants to feels what real passion is all about for once in her life. Once found out, Frank offers Charlotte the role of his mistress after he is wed. Charlotte can't do this and leaves for America. And what a trip to America it is. Taking everything she could ever want with her. Excellent book to curl up with and enjoy. What a way to start a new series. Would strongly recommend.

Charlotte Harding was an admirable character, knowing what she wants and willing to stand up for herself. She walked away from an unsuitable marriage to “George” rather than try to take a safe but unpleasant way out of her situation. She was absolutely correct that she should not marry a man who is cruel, stupid, and has little to recommend him apart from his wealth. Suggestions of marrying him and getting him to change were foolish and impossible, so she made the correct choice which was rare in those days!
Viscount Stanton (“Frank”) had a long way to go to be likable. He was selfish and cold toward women in general except for brief encounters for his own selfish pleasure. But his time with Charlotte changed him into a better person. Her beauty may have been inside, but she was worthy and likable. Would the two of them take a chance on more? Or would the culture of the day keep them apart?

Charlotte Harding was an impressive character and I loved the way the author wrote her story. She impressed me so much and I think many young girls could learn from her. She is considered plain, overlooked in general but she understands she has value and deserves happiness too! She won’t settle on marriage to a mean man and takes her chances on the charity of relatives.
When she meets Viscount Frank Stanton she is in awe of his good looks and wants to be noticed. He barely gives her a glance because he is considering marriage to the beautiful heiress, Miss Powell to please his father who he wants to impress, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. When Charlotte witnesses a secret tryst she uses that opportunity to proposition Frank into a temporary affair. She wants to experience passion and the love scenes between them are steamy!
I did not like the character of Frank initially, he was disrespectful to woman and saw them as nothing more than a sexual outlet. As often is the case, when he starts his affair with Charlotte he begins to change, I started to see what Charlotte liked about him and he finally sees Charlotte isn’t plain but beautiful inside and out. A scandal occurs and what was meant to be a temporary arrangement after a lot of hullabaloo turns into a HEA.
This was the first book in the Stanton Legacy Series and my first book by this author. I enjoyed her writing style and character development and look forward to reading more of her books. I loved Frank’s brother and look forward to his story.

I love the way this author writes her female character. They are assertive but not aggressive. They stand up for themselves and embrace their sexuality. I was wondering how M.M. Wakeford was going to handle a female character set in the particular time period the story takes place. She did a great job. She made Charlotte relatable and likable.
I understood Charlotte's fears and insecurities, and I really wanted her to succeed and overcome the obstacles in her life. Some things didn't happen like I wanted, but this is still a beautiful story.

Charlotte was an amazing character. My heart hurt for her, I just wanted to hug her. Her insecurities were so real, and hit close to home. That feeling of being plain and not being enough.
The plot was amazing. I loved the drama in this book. Page turner and fast paced. I liked Frank too. The angst was great, the jealousy. I think their relationship was great!

I loved reading this book! Right from the beginning I was invested in the story. The writing style is not rushed, so detailed and so well executed. I loved being immersed in the story of how the main characters fell in love.
The book is set in the early Victorian era. The story follows Charlotte Harding, a very kind and caring young woman who knows she isn’t considered the stereotype of a natural beauty of the time. She is fuller figured and of a darker complexion because her mother was Spanish. I loved Charlotte’s gentle and elegant manner no matter who she was around. After her father dies, she refuses an unsuitable marriage proposal, her stepmother is outraged and so she goes to live with her previously estranged paternal aunt, cousin and his family. Here she is introduced to a new way of living, having previously lived a sheltered life in the country she is taken to London for the season and enjoys her new life, even though she knows she probably will never get married.
Francis (Frank) Stanton is a viscount, rake and feels more entitled than most. He has no interest in marriage or politics but feels he has to do as his father wants him to and his father wants him to marry and become more involved with politics. Frank is presented with the woman his father expects him to marry at a dinner party. He doesn’t want to be told what to do but he doesn’t want his father upset.
Frank and Charlotte are first introduced when Frank visits Fredrick (Charlotte’s cousin) and his family when they first arrive back in London with her from their country home. Charlotte feels an instant connection with him but he hardly notices her. A further interaction between them after an accident with her dress finds Charlotte alone in a bedroom in her undergarments, hidden behind a screen when Frank and his lover come in for a tryst. He finds Charlotte hiding and threatens her to keep quiet about what she saw and then kisses her.
Charlotte later makes a suggestion to Frank that he is not be able to resist and the more he gets to know Charlotte, the less he wants to let her go. He has to decide whether to marry the woman his father wants him to and give up Charlotte or find a new path for his and Charlotte’s happiness.
I really disliked Frank at the beginning of the book. He was very self absorbed and opinionated. The more he is influenced by Charlotte and her caring attitudes, he becomes a changed man. I loved how he loves Charlotte.
This book had me feeling so many emotions and the storyline was so interesting to read.
The book had a great unexpected ending unlike anything else I’d read before.
There were some lovely side characters in the story that really enhanced the plot, including Jasper, (Frank’s younger brother), Rupert (Frank’s friend), Ruth and Robert (Charlotte’s best friends from childhood), Fredrick and his wife Harriet (Charlotte’s cousin) and Miss Helena Powell (Frank’s intended). All of them enriched the storyline although at the beginning I did get a bit confused as Frank and Fredrick are so similar, for me it would have been better for the characters to have different sounding names but that is probably just me.
There are also very steamy open door scenes that I thought were well written but not everyone enjoys as much steam.
There is also an epilogue five years later and a lovely look at the next book in the series, which I am really looking forward to.
Like I said at the beginning, I loved reading this book. I would give it 10 stars if I could. I would recommend it to everyone who loves steamy historical novels with lots of depth and detail.

Although she had been tasked with caring for Charlotte, a promise is only as good as the heart that carries it and Charlotte soon realizes her step mother has no desire to make good on her word to her father.
So, now Charlotte is orphaned, broke and in a house with someone who does not have her best interests at heart. Plus, Charlotte was not exactly what a lady of the social class should resemble as she was plain and of mixed descent. You see her father married for love – not status – and thus was disowned by his own family. He married a Spaniard whose father was in trade (less social clout) leaving Charlotte with genetics that also gave her a few more curves than the average waifish socialite.
With the intent of ridding herself of the burden of Charlotte via the first suitor to propose marriage –thinking Charlotte should be lucky to even BE asked because she was so homely – she became incensed that Charlotte would decline and relegated her to the rooms in the attic among the staff, not where a lady in good standing should reside in her own home.
Charlotte writes to her estranged aunt and cousin seeking refuge. Luckily, they agree to take her in. She’s soon put into the social circles of London, being given new ball gowns, living in finery, needing or wanting of nothing… other than her hope to love and be loved. She is resolved, however, that if love is not found, her life should be a simple one, finding happiness living simply.
One night at a ball, she witnesses a tryst between a couple in a bedroom they’d thought abandoned and her intrigue and desire to know this kind of passion is ignited. The gentleman, Francis (Frank) Stanton, a rich, handsome and powerful man, discovers her and leaves her with a passionate kiss to hold his secret. I picked up The Viscount’s Scandalous Affair expecting a classic Regency romance—and while it certainly delivers on the era’s charm, it also surprised me with its depth, forward-thinking heroine, and undeniable steam!
Charlotte Harding, recently orphaned and cast out by her cruel stepmother, finds refuge with her aunt in London to partake in the social whirl of the season. What follows is anything but typical. From the moment she witnesses the scandalous Viscount Stanton in a compromising situation, she dubs him a rake—and yet can't seem to keep her thoughts (or heart) from wandering back to him. Their chemistry and Charlotte's boldness makes her a standout heroine for the genre.
The story unfolds with care, and while the pacing at the beginning is a touch slower, it is entirely necessary for building a believable and immersive world. Once you're in, you're hooked. I loved how Charlotte outwardly portrays a simpering debutante but underneath she is a strong-willed, clever woman unafraid to take charge of her destiny—even if it scandalizes society.
The audiobook, narrated by Philip Battley, is an absolute gem. Battley effortlessly breathes life into the characters, from the commanding and emotionally complex Viscount to the softer, sharper tones of Charlotte. His performance enhances the romantic tension and emotional nuance, and he carries off the sensual scenes with impressive poise and passion.
Yes—this is a steamy listen, with adult language and several explicit moments, but they’re tastefully done and serve the characters’ emotional arcs well. The ending is especially satisfying, offering a HEA that feels both earned and unique.
Whether you’re reading or listening, The Viscount’s Scandalous Affair is a sultry, smart, and thoroughly enjoyable escape. Highly recommended for fans of historical romance who like their stories with a little scandal and a lot of heart.

This book has its ups and downs, and despite the wonky dialogue I couldn't help but take note of, the characters really did shine for me, especially Charlotte. Her openness and ready acceptance of her sexuality as well as all the misfortunes she faced in life were a breath of fresh air. The way she got herself through the tough parts was really admirable, and the decisions she made actually made sense for her character, with the way she went about them marking how well written she was. Frank was a bit of a grey area for me. He just didn't feel as fleshed out or as compelling as Charlotte, but I could still see what made him so irresistible to Charlotte, and his character development checked out towards the end. I really loved that he, who took his fortune in life as a matter of fact and was greatly bound to maintain it, was willing to toil in the fields and become just like the farmer friends of Charlotte that her warned her against speaking of in society.
Jasper absolutely stole the show, and both Ruth and Robert were such lovely friends to Charlotte that their rare appearances still managed to cement the strength of their relationships. Overall, perhaps my favorite part of this is the way Charlotte's sexuality—perhaps just sexuality in general—was portrayed here. Charlotte was always a sexual being, and instead of shying away from it she used it as an act of agency, something she had felt deprived of since her father's death. Even Helena, foil that she was in the main couple's relationship, was granted a moment showing her own sexuality, and far from being shamed for her appetites or even just existing as roadblock to the main romance, she ends up being held in the highest esteem.
Overall, this was a fun read that managed to successfully add the flavor of angst to what is effectively a straightforward story about finding love in the most unexpected of places, although in this case it's more of a person.

I liked Frank and Charlotte‘s story. It has an engaging plot with likable characters and it is peppered with lots of steamy erotic scenes. A real emotional rollercoaster, especially on Frank‘s side.
Frank is a dutiful son. His father wants him to be politically successful and married by the end of the year. Although he is not thinking about marriage himself, it is the lesser of two evils and he starts courting the lady his father suggests.
Charlotte is rather plain looking and intellectual from country nobility.
Having left home to escape an unwanted marriage and her stepmother’s wrath, Charlotte now finds herself in the same undesirable position in London when her aunt also wants to set her up with a man. However, she would rather become an old maid than have to marry a man she doesn't like.
Charlotte falls in love with Frank on their first meeting, even though he hardly takes notice of her. When she incidently observes a tryst with his mistress, she is fascinated. As she assumes she will never marry, she asks him to make her his mistress until he gets engaged...
This is a perfect book for lovers of historical romance who enjoy forbidden love stories with strong heroine, torn heroes and an unexpected happy ending.

This was my first book by this author, and I was not disappointed.
I was completely taken in by Charlotte. A woman aware of what she wanted in life and that to get it she had to take charge of her life. I felt Charlotte was a wee bit hard on herself but she understood what she had to offer. I also was cheering for her when she decides that if she was going to be alone, she wanted to make the most of her time in London while she could.
I didn't like Frank when we first meet him. Though I liked the name, it is the same as my husband I wasn't impressed by how he treated women be they a one-night stand or long-term relationship. He was pretty callous. But as he and Charlotte begin their relationship and he begins to open up, I started to like him. He is as wounded as charlotte by what life offers.
Overall, I felt the book flowed well. The characters have depth and a story. Though a quick read I felt it was well written and though tout. I enjoyed the author's style of writing and how she portrayed everyone. I would definitely love to read more by her.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a rather steamy love affair.

This historical romance was very unusual. Frank, the hero, was an intelligent, responsible person. However, his attitude towards women and marriage was definitely in need of improvement. Charlotte, the impoverished country relation, was far beneath his notice. Making matters worse, the intelligent Charlotte was not as beautiful as most ladies of society.
When Frank and Charlotte originally get together, it is because Charlotte has despaired of ever finding a real love and the handsome Frank is willing to engage in a meaningless liaison. Eventually Frank realizes that what he has with Charlotte is more precious than any empty ton marriage could ever be.
The steamy parts of this novel have a very modern feeling to them. There is quite a bit of explicit language. I think that this book was racier than most others in the genre.
While this book did have a happy ending for Frank and Charlotte, some aspects of the ending were bittersweet. Unfortunately, I can't really explain this without giving away spoilers. Suffice it to say, I was tearful when I read the end of the book because I wanted the perfect happy ending for everyone. Hopefully, the next book will address these issues.

“Life is not always about what we would like.”
After a bit of a slow start this book picked up and ended up being very enjoyable. I didn't care much for Frank at first although I did like Charlotte a lot. She was very sweet and I hated that her looks were such a big deal. I suppose there wouldn't have been any story if she'd been beautiful, though, so I got over it. I liked how she took charge of her situation and decided to find whatever happiness she could get, even knowing what the future would hold.
Eventually I warmed to Frank as he grew a pair and by the end I felt he redeemed himself. I actually thought there would be more angst than there was which was kind of nice.
Except for the open door bedroom scenes and the more modern language, the author did manage to evoke a traditional old-fashioned regency romance feel for the book better than many authors do. I never felt like the story could be lifted with just a few changes and dropped into the present. It was very much a historical romance with all the charm of the period. Definitely a suprise from an author known more for writing contemporary and sci-fi romances. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Both characters were major red flags and I couldn't enjoy this book because of them and their behavior. Charlotte is orphaned, poor, and living with her relatives after being kicked out of her stepmother's home. Frank is a carefree Viscount who has affairs with older women but also lives under his father's thumb. When Charlotte witnesses Frank and his mistress boinking, she masturbates and gets busted by Frank who in turn makes out and gropes her. They then embark on an affair while Frank actively courts Charlotte's cousin at his father's command.
This is the opposite of a romance. Yuck.
(Charlotte acted like a harlot and she was only sorry she got busted. Frank was disgusting and spineless.)

This love story between Frank and Charlotte focuses on many issues that women faced during this time period and maybe even today.
Charlotte is not necessarily what one would be called a beauty. She us also a poor relation. These 2 things are held against her, even though she's kind, loyal and smart.
Frank is socially conscious and under his father's thumb. He agrees to pursue an affair with Charlotte while courting another father-approved lady. He compromises Charlotte in public and instead of doing rhe right thing he offers he an opportunityvti be hi mistress.
Charlotte takes her life in her hand and leaves him to go far, far away from Frank, who eventually realizes his loses and comes to his senses to pursue Charlotte.

Charlotte Harding’s mother had died and her father remarried then he died and left Charlotte’s step-mother to care for Charlotte. Charlotte’s step-mother left her with minimal finances. When Charlotte refuses to marry, her step-mother treats her badly and Charlotte moves in with her aunt in London who joins the Seasons and the Powell family. The Powell’s daughter Helena is being courted by Viscount Francis (Frank) Stanton. Frank likes his bachelor life but to please his father the Earl of Stanton he agrees to court Helena. Frank sees Charlotte as a plain woman with no future. Frank and Charlotte have a brief passionate affair after he catches her having a fling with his mistress. I really enjoyed this fantastic historical romance novel. I received this free e-book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Charlotte is left with her awful stepmother after her father dies. She is trying to marry Charlotte off, but our Charlotte has a backbone and refuses. She ends up in London with her father's family. Charlotte meets Frank and is smitten with him. After catching him in a compromising situation, she manages to convince him to make her his mistress. Frank took awhile for me to warm up to, but at the end, he was not so bad, although it take him some time to redeem himself.
This is my first M. M. Wakeford book and I look forward to reading more.
