Simmer (verb): to stew gently below or just at the boiling point; to be in a state of incipient development

My life was always at a simmer… only stewing, never going anywhere. I was left to fend for myself when it came to affection or love, so I learned to go without.

I refused to let them see how broken and lonely I was; it was much easier to hide behind a false reality. I didn't want anyone's pity. I didn't need it. Pity wouldn't put food on the table or keep a roof over our heads. That was all me.

Now, I have a second chance at a dream long forgotten. It demands hard work and sacrifice—with absolutely no distractions. A recipe I already know all too well, raising a daughter on my own.

Drew Kostas is everything I’ve ever wanted but couldn't let myself have. He’s younger, gorgeous, charming—and relentless. He sees beyond the hardened shell I’ve built to protect myself, coaxing out a softer me I don't recognize.
It doesn't matter how I melt in his presence when the heat between us threatens to boil over.

That's the thing about heat. When it rises, everyone gets burned.

Especially when they're foolish enough to fall in love.

Rating - All the stars!

If there is anyone who should dislike this book, it’s me. We first met Sara in Rewrite, which is one of my favorites, and she made the lives of characters I love quite the challenge. However, Ms. Rose’s talent knows no end, because she quickly won me over and made me fall in love with Sara. Sara’s motivations become clear early on in Simmer, and we see that there is so much more to her hidden below the surface. This book easily became on of my favorites!

“Fire and Ice”

Sara is a difficult character. She has had a tough life, but she is determined to do better for her daughter. When the opportunity to build a better life arises, she takes it, but what happens when she crashes into Drew? Could he be part of the life she is building, or does he come with an expiration date? Drew is amazing. He sees below the surface to who Sara really is and accepts her. He is loyal and loving, kind and forgiving, determined and oh so hot! Even when Sara tries to push him away, he is right there showing her she is worth it. Drew is the definition of swoon worthy.

“Standing in the street in the middle of a snowstorm I gave in with a kiss - and I didn't want to stop.”

The first half of this book truly does Simmer. As Drew pursues Sara, I was dying for their attraction to boil over, and when it did...sigh. Their chemistry is off the charts. I loved that they built such a strong friendship first. They knew exactly what the other needed and didn’t rush. The foundation they built made everything else that much more delicious. I was rooting for this couple from beginning to end. While they had many obstacles to overcome, their relationship was worth it.

This book is an absolute must read! Rose’s amazing talent for storytelling and character development shine throughout this book. You don’t need to read Rewrite first, but since it is one of my favorites, I think you should read it anyway. Since we see Josh and Bri in this book as well, you will want their story even if you wait and read it second. The only thing I am left wondering is when will we get books for Lisa, Brian, and Carlos??

I absolutely love books with older heroines, absolutely!
I know so many couples in real life where a woman is older, and it’s beautiful!
I wish we had more books with this trope!

However I have my pet peeves and this one touched one of those.

Sara Caldwell is a 32 yr. old single mom living in New York trying to make ends meet. She works multiple jobs and still struggles to support herself and her daughter Victoria. She grew up not feeling loved by her own family, and now that she has her own child, she wants to give her everything. Victoria was her entire world, so when she gets an opportunity to provide a better life for her she takes it. Her dream is to be a chef. She’s offered a paid internship at a college upstate on an accelerated one year program. She hates to be away from her daughter, but wants to give her the best life possible. Tired of going around the same endless cycle, she takes help from Victoria’s father Josh, and leaves for the culinary program.

Sara needs to do this for their future. No distractions. Just finish school and move back home. Her life has revolved around working and providing for her daughter. She never really got to be a kid or be carefree. She often came across to others as uptight & standoffish, but didn’t really care. She knew she could be a bit prickly, but she didn’t have time for men or socializing. Then Drew Kostas crashes into her life. He’s seven years younger, gorgeous, and persistent. He’s determined to be her friend and make her have a little fun.

This is Sara’s first time living away at school. She begins spending time with Drew, and they become very close friends. She tries to push him away, but she can’t fight her feelings for him. He’s crazy about her, and wants her to trust he won’t hurt her. She’s denied herself love for so many years. Her daughter was her only purpose and happiness. Will she fight for a future with Drew or be afraid to open up her heart?

-He was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

-The more time we spent together, the more I considered. The more I liked. The more I wanted.

-Drew made me feel loved and whole and wanted.

-There was no running or walking away. My body wouldn’t let me. It needed him too much. I needed him too much.

-This man was my everything.

This was my first book by Stephanie Rose, and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to read more by her. This is a beautiful story about love, friendship, healing and second chances. I adored everything about Drew. He was delicious, dreamy, & devoted. He fell hard and fast for Sara, and she was it for him. This book reminds you when love finds you just embrace it with your whole heart.

When I was introduced to Sara in Rewrite I wasn’t her biggest fan so I was prepared not to be won over when I started Simmer. Lo and behold I was converted in a matter of no time. Sara, her strength, character and her unconditional love for her daughter Victoria was something I couldn’t help falling in love with. Her doubts and wanting to do right by Victoria and her daughter’s father Josh was relatable and I could easily imagine her struggles cause Stephanie Rose captured and depicted them so beautifully. My heart broke for Sara and the love she never received from her parents because of a choice she made. Never having experienced love besides her daughter is something that affects her profoundly so when this amazing guy, Drew enters her world he shows her a life she never could’ve imagined and that it’s now possible and in her reach.

Drew is pretty dreamy let me tell you. He’s seven years younger so that’s something that makes Sara think twice but Drew expects nothing but friendship and their connection is incredible. I enjoyed them getting to know one another and how they both struggled to stay in the friend zone. He’s such a fantastic guy who just wants to shower Sara with love cause she deserves it. He handles everything with ease and his blooming friendship with Sara’ daughter Victoria was totally swoon worthy. As dreamy as he can be he also possesses a protective and alpha side which was hot as hell.

I enjoyed every aspect of Simmer. Sara and Drew’s friendship evolving into love and Sara’s friendship with her daughter’s father Josh and his wife Brianna. Don’t get me started on that epilogue which has a surprise appearance from a couple characters from the author’s previous books. Simmer has everything that I love in a romance and once again Stephanie Rose delivers.

When I met Sara, the female protagonist, in a previous novel it is an understatement to say that I did not like her at all and I honestly wasn't sure how the author would make me warm to her. I wasn't sure I'd be invested in her living happy-ever-after, but somehow, along the way of this story, she did. The beginning of SIMMER shows Sara's perspective on all the WHYs of her actions from the previous novel, her struggle in life, her care for her daughter. I understood her motivation and saw her softer side which made me warm to her and her situation.

As well as uncovering the layers of Sara's motivation, SIMMER shows us her dreams and aspirations and, as this element of the story develops so too does her dreamy romance with Drew Kostas who is undoubtedly the star of this story. He is swoony, dreamy, ambitious and so very caring. A genuine person, a little younger than Sara and sexy as hell. I very much enjoyed his development within the narrative of this story.

Stephanie Rose writes effortless romance, its swoony and beautiful, and easy on both the heart and mind. I always root for her characters and certainly SIMMER, her latest offering, is no exception.

I was nearly halfway when I realized this was the continuation of Rewrite from the same writer and I had already met the side characters here as the hero & heroine in Rewrite. However, let me tell you that it won't make any difference if you haven't read Rewrite. I just happened to have read it.

I liked this book much more than Rewrite because Rewrite had some of my pet peeves and also I am not very good at loving second chance romances and Rewrite was a second chance romance.

***********************************************

SIMMER:

As for this book Simmer, we have a heroine who is 32 years old with a daughter of 8 years old. It happened after a one-night stand and although she knew how to find him, she didn't look for the guy to inform that he was going to be a father.

Her parents threw her out of the house when she got pregnant while being single and she had to work insane hours to be able to look after herself and her daughter.

Then, one day the daughter's father comes and finds them by accident and he wants to be a father for her. He is a good guy and he has a girlfriend he is committed to. After freaking out and giving them hell for some time, Sara accepts their existence in their lives and her daughter Victoria also likes her dad and his girlfriend.

***********************************************

Sara had left college when she got pregnant and now an opportunity arises where she can go and finish her last year and graduate. They make an arrangement so that Victoria stays with her father Josh & his girl-friend Brianna while Sara goes to college in another state for a year.

***********************************************

Sara meets our hero Drew in college. He is drawn to her immediately but she is both shy and scared about a new relationship. She wants to concentrate on her classes and graduate so that she can go back to her daughter as soon as possible. However, Drew is relentless. When he realizes that she is not ready for a relationship, he wants to be friends and they become really good & close friends.

Sara is 32 years old whereas Drew is 25. Sara is also attracted to Drew but she thinks she cannot have a future with Drew as he is 7 years younger than her and she also thinks it is not fair for him to take on a step-dad responsibility at this age. That's why, she resists her own attraction to him for a long while.

Drew is the dream guy of every girl. He is just perfect. Handsome, sexy, funny, affectionate, understanding & caring. He just couldn't be more awesome. He doesn't have even one flaw. He knows he wants Sara and he waits for her patiently until she sees how serious he is and believes in his feelings.

Sara lived a life in which she wasn't loved except for her sister and her daughter. That's why, she is bitter. She lacks self-confidence and she thinks she is not worth Drew's love or attention. She believes she doesn't deserve such a gorgeous guy who is younger than her. But Drew slowly helps her to gain her self-confidence and the more she feels loved and valued, the less bitter she becomes.

***********************************************

This is a very sweet and emotional love story with very little or no angst. Problems are solved easily & quickly and it is a story of happiness.

Normally a sweet love story would get 3 or 4 stars from me if it is nothing more. SIMMER gets 4 stars because of its huge plus, which is its awesome hero, Drew.

QUOTES from the book

“You are the best friend I’ve had in, maybe ever. I still don’t know why you waste your time,” she choked out a laugh. “But I’m so thankful you do.”
“I’m not wasting my time. It’s not a waste if I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

“What do we do now?” she asked, her voice still scratchy and small.
“We eat, we stay friends, and we wait until you’re ready for anything else.” I swiped at her tears with my thumbs. “And I’ll be right here.” My lips found her forehead. “ Not wasting my time.”

***

"I love you. I’ll keep saying it until it sinks in,” he rasped into my hair. “The rest, we’ll talk about later.” I burrowed my head deep in his chest, breathing him in and praying this wasn’t a dream. He always seemed too good to be true.

***

"It’s not sudden. It’s right. That’s what we are, Sara. Nothing we do could be wrong if we’re together. Numbers don’t matter, not in time or age. What we have is timeless.”

“Numbers don’t matter, not in time or age. What we have is timeless.”

Oh, oh, oh. You guys, I think Simmer is the perfect title for this book. It has raw, real emotion bubbling below the surface—a constant tension, ache, love that cannot be ignored—and then these moments where it just . . . boils over into all the feels.

Highlight

Which probably explains why I didn’t want to put this book down. I forced myself to at 1:15am, knowing I’d remember it better, experience it better, love it better if my mind was alert, but it was a battle. Because the word unputdownable (which is maybe not a word, but go with me on this) was created for books like Simmer.

Books that can have a steady stream of tears wanting to fall for an anti-heroine turned woman you understand, relate to and want to fiercely hug. Books that have a super swoony hero who makes you flush and blush on every page. Books that speak to you on every level—as a mother, as a friend, as a person who misses family.

Constant

Books that are well-written and well-rounded.

Books that end too soon—only because you love it so much—and books that you know are going to stick with you and your simmering heart for a long, long time to come.

“You didn’t ruin my night. You were the highlight of my day.”

I’m SMILING and I can’t stop! I’m so BREATHLESS from the DREAMY story I savored! I still feel butterflies buzzing around me from a book that BEGUILED me. Author Stephanie Rose’s latest sensation, SIMMER, is the EPITOME OF ROMANCE, a love story that SWEPT ME AWAY. Simmer is a friends-to-lovers tale—friends on fire—that touches the heart and MELTS EVERYWHERE.

This story picks up where Rewrite left off, following a jaded heroine and her soulmate of a hero who helps her broken parts become whole. Sara is a gorgeous and noteworthy heroine that you can’t help but root for, one who has battled hardship after hardship, one so worthy of love and a good life. I admired her strength.

I wished she could see what I saw.

Drew is such a hot and heartfelt hero—Mr. Romance—who romanced me along with the heroine. All the Prince Drew drooling-swoon. This hero and heroine spark, igniting like fireworks, with chemistry that captivates.

”I’ve got you. Or I will. Once you let me.”

Simmer is so much MORE than a romance. Simmer is a story of STRENGTH where a newly brave heroine rises after falling to pick up those shattered pieces of her heart after life continuously kicks her tail. Simmer is a story of HOPE after hopeless—dreaming of and knowing there is a better life waiting to be lived. Simmer is a story of SALVATION, encountering a savior to turn life’s pain into promise ... into pleasure. It’s UNEXPECTED LOVE from a white knight who rescues you when you didn’t want nor know you needed a savior, helping replace that broken spirit with soul-lifting love.

”Numbers don’t matter, not in time or age. What we have is timeless.”

Simmer smolders with heat and heart, a slow burn guaranteed to make your heart leap with joy. My heart soared to the sky with SWOON that lifted me to Cloud Nine! Simmer is a dreamy fairytale you won’t want to end—the kind of ALL-CONSUMING ROMANCE where you hold your breath with delight as two beautiful people find love that was unexpected but oh so right. I was SMITTEN with the steamy, sparkling, and soul-stirring Simmer! HEADY, HOT, and HEARTFELT, Simmer is a refreshingly real love story with a fairytale feel. I was so OWNED by this heartfelt and hopeful romance—from my thumping heart to my swoon-filled soul.

”You were never worthless. You’re worth everything to me.”

I've heard such great things about this book but I've got to admit I'm struggling

I don't like the h, she's 32 and blushes and fumbles about like an 18 year old
I usually admire single parent h's who've struggled and sacrificed for their child....but this woman had a ONS and got pregnant. The thing is she had an idea if how to get in touch with the guy she just chose not to because she didn't really know him. That's selfish behavior and one of the things that seriously irks me. When the guy accidentally finds out he has a child and him and his girlfriend want to be there for the child the h acts like an irrational and spoiled brat, causing scenes that had a negative emotional impact on her child!!!!
Then she finally gets some sense and goes off to college leaving the child with her dad, but I read these romances for the kids! I need some interactions between the child and the mmc plus I hate exes(even great ones) in my booksv
The H is a 25 year old former manwhore, he actually seems ok

My heart is full! Drew and Sara’s story is so sweet and passionate. This is my first book by Stephanie Rose. The chemistry between the two characters….taking it slow….you can feel it heating from their first meeting and it’s worth the wait. All of the characters in here have a great connection and friendship; I love how they all consider Victoria’s feelings in this parenting circle and large family. Of course, it has some heartbreaking moments but they make the heartwarming ones all the more special.

Drew is so sweet, charming, loving; he has such a big heart. He’s younger than Sara but he knows what he wants, that’s the easy part. He’s so patient and kind to her, willing to take it slow. I love the little moments between them as he is slowly working his way into her heart and how he’s there when she needs him even when she denies it. Drew is willing to love all the pieces of her including her daughter. His unconditional love for Victoria and her acceptance of him is so touching.

My heart broke for Sara. Her parents are so horrible it still makes me teary thinking about how badly they treated her and how she never felt loved. Kicked out when she’s pregnant, left to raise her daughter on her own, and working several jobs just to provide for her. She’s such a strong woman and a great mom. That phone call at Christmas…..shattered me. I think as much as it hurt it was a great growth moment for her. For her to make that call to Drew to accept help….tissues please.

I can’t wait to go back a read Rewrite. Which is where readers are first introduced to Sara. It’s Josh and Brianna’s story and I’m sure I’ll love it. I’m looking forward to going back to their beginning, hopefully, his and Victoria’s first meeting too. I’m sure there are more tears to come.

Simmer is poignant, passionate, and the kind of slow burn that will have you boiling over with excitement as you devour every last word.

It's no secret that I love Stephanie Rose's books. But what I especially love about Simmer is it's a story about redemption. Sara is a dynamic and complex woman and I am so happy that she was given a voice in this book. She is a headstrong single mom who is more driven than she realizes. And with this kind of mentality, comes many challenges ... especially with relationships. But when Drew Kostas comes into Sara's life, he is determined to show her that the heart doesn't care about distance or age or what phase of life you may be in, because when you love someone wholeheartedly, you are willing to sacrifice without question.

I think that Sara may be my favorite character Stephanie has written to date because she is so real and you can relate to her, especially in her less than perfect moments. There is a little bit of Sara in all of us, but more importantly, she's the kind of heroine that women everywhere can believe in.

Audiobook Review

This was such a beautiful and delicious slow burn romance! I had already enjoyed Simmer when it was released on ebook, but listening to it on audio took it to a whole new level! Yes, this is an older woman/younger man romance, but it's also so much more. Sara is a complex character and the book focuses just as much on the romance as it does on Sara's journey of healing and moving on from her past. Drew was everything you hope a book boyfriend will be and could not have been more incredible. He was supportive, considerate, sexy, patient, loving, and just the right amount of alpha. The build up between Drew and Sara was so perfect thanks to their amazing chemistry. Even though Sara was introduced in the book Rewrite and some previous characters do appear, Simmer can be enjoyed as a standalone.

This was my first time listening to Ines del Castillo and Joseph Discher and overall I was impressed by both of their performances. Joseph Discher especially nailed it as the sexy and swoony Drew. He truly made me fall in love with Drew all over again! Ines del Castillo had a slightly more youthful voice than I imagined for Sara, but I felt like she captured the vulnerability of the character so well. I didn't find her character voices (male and female) as distinct as Joseph Discher's though, so there were a few times that it took me a second to figure out who was speaking (except for Victoria). I still enjoyed both narrators and look forward to listening to more of their work.

Overall 5 stars
Performance 4.5 stars
Story 5 stars

What an amazingly heartfelt and delicious slow burn romance! Simmer could not have been a more appropriate title! I will admit though, that I could not wait for the boil over! ;) The heroine, Sara, was introduced in the book Rewrite, and some previous characters do appear, but Simmer can be read as a standalone.

I didn't think my opinion of Sara would change much after meeting her in Rewrite, but I was happily proven wrong. It was so insightful to be inside her head and to finally understand the motivations behind many of her actions. I absolutely loved seeing Drew slowly chip away at her walls and then finally take the whole damn building down! Stephanie Rose knows how to write a hero! Swoon! Swoon! Swoon! Drew was everything you hope a book boyfriend will be and could not have been more incredible. He was supportive, considerate, sexy, patient, loving, and just the right amount of alpha. The build up between Drew and Sara was so perfect thanks to their amazing chemistry.

description

I loved that the story was as much a romance as it was about Sara's healing and moving on from her past. Her fears and insecurities were so relatable, and though I may not have agreed with some of her decisions, I understood how she was feeling. The epilogue couldn't have been any sweeter and I may have squealed when Lucas and Joey made a little cameo. ;) Truly a wonderful book that shows that it really is never too late to listen to your heart and change your story.

This is a sweet story of redemption. I understood the plot and liked the premise. Older woman, younger man, lots of complications and lots of angst. A friend to lovers story with characters from a prior story......all sounded wonderful.

Drew- While this is Sara’s story, Drew, the younger man, stole the story. His careful and slow courtship, his determination in the face of skittishness, and his constant and abiding love for Sara was perfect. While 7 years younger, he was mature and definitely wise beyond his years.

Sara- I had a hard time connecting with Sara. To me, she was a constant source of negativity and “poor pitiful me”. I get that her life was very hard but she didn’t take the responsibility and then blamed others, over and over. While not maliciously, she just wallowed in her hardships. She did have motivation and strength to better herself for her daughter and that was something I would have enjoyed more of. But by the end of the story, I did warm up to her. But for me, it was all Drew and the Epilogue that made that possible.

In all, this is a sweet romance. I love the writing of this author and her pace of the story. I just had some issues with the heroine that I’m sure was a case of me and not the story.

5 sweet and savory stars!

From the moment I read the blurb of this book, I knew I was in for a Stephanie Rose classic. Simmer is the perfect concoction of a sweet and savory romance that sizzles off the page.

The instant Sara and Drew are thrust together, he finds a way to bring out the best in her. Even when she's too jaded to see she possesses the qualities that make her the strong, relatable female character she is. Although they are an unlikely pair, this couple compliments each other better than Cabernet does a big, juicy steak. And speaking of juicy--Sara and Drew's passion for each other was almost too hot to handle without oven mitts for my kindle.

Simmer blends so many of my favorite tropes--friends to lovers, second chances, a younger man falling for an older, single mom--that it's impossible NOT to recommend this gem as a must read.

5 "Fire and Ice" Stars!!!!

I want to start off by saying that I've claimed Drew Kostas. He's mine! End for story! Don't come at me because I won't play nice. That man is MINE! So now that we have that cleared up, on to my review.

Simmer was intoxicatingly delicious. It brought so many emotions. Likable characters that had me smiling so hard. With a swoontastic Hero that gave me all the damn heart eyes. And a heroine that had me rooting for her and praising her at the same time. A story filled with charming moments and MC's you couldn't help but fall completely in love with.

Sara's life hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows. The only bright spot is her daughter, Victoria. She's been estranged from her family, her parents want nothing to do with her. Her focus is going back to school to finish her degree and get a job as a chef and provide for her daughter and to give Victoria the life she deserves. Sara had so many qualities I admired. And for her to think she wasn't deserving or worthy broke my heart. She just needed one, one person to show her and make her believe that she was wrong.

Drew Kostas. Oh be still my freaking heart. Drew was EVERYTHING! Attentive, charming, swoony, a little alpha thrown in there, caring, and loving. I can go on and on. He was just the perfect man, if there ever was one. I seriously couldn't get enough of him.

Sara and Drew, there was no denying their attraction. It was obvious feelings were there. But Sara was hesitant, not only because she was older, but also because she has a daughter. She didn't want to get involved with Drew only to have it not work out. Though Drew was persistent and wouldn't stop until Sara put her reservations aside and gave in to what she was obviously feeling. And boy when that happened, sparks ignited. I loved how Drew didn't give up on Sara and helped her see her worth. These two were so made for each other. And the relationship between Drew and Victoria melted my heart, cuteness overload. Couldn't get enough of this book or these characters. Love, love, love!

Definitely recommend!

When I read a Stephanie Rose book, I expect a swoony, slightly alpha hero. It's her special talent. She makes the guys in her book completely irresistible. What I wasn't expecting was for her to make me fall completely in love with her heroine.

Yes, Sara has bristly. She has rough edges, she's prickly sometimes. But she has her reasons. She's been hurt a lot, she's been unloved for so long, and she's used to be hurt and left behind. But when you let her icy exterior thaw, she becomes thoughtful, caring, and downright lovable.

Drew describes her best. He calls her "my fire and ice." That is totally Sara.

The journey that Sara takes through this book is one of hard choices, ones I'm not sure I could make. I love that she will do anything she possibly can to do what she can, to make her life better. I love the courage and the fortitude she has.

"No one needs to rescue me." - Sara

And it's true. She doesn't need rescuing, she doesn't need saving. She is her own hero. Luckily, Drew is able to see the side of Sara that she guards so fiercely.

I loved everything in this book. The slow burn, the sexiness, the heart aches, the happiness, the smiles. It was truly Stephanie Rose at her finest. She writes romances that stick with you, that make you want more. I can't wait to see what comes next!

For those Stephanie Rose fans who have read Rewrite and are positive that Sara can not be redeemed: I implore you to read this with an open mind. Because you will get to know a side of this single mom, who has virtually no one in her life. The struggling introvert, who nevertheless does everything and anything she can to make sure that her daughter is provided for, but more importantly, to let her know that she is LOVED. And then you'll meet the man who shows her that, for the first time in her life, she, herself, is also worthy of love.

For those of you who have read other Stephanie Rose books, but not Rewrite, don't stress it. This can be read as a stand alone, so you can go back and read Rewrite afterward, because I'm sure you'll want to get to know more about Josh, Brianna and Victoria and the back story there. But I think Simmer will quickly become your favorite Stephanie Rose book, if not one of your favorite books overall. Sara will work tirelessly and no doubt earn your admiration and compassion. And Drew, well, he won't have to work that hard, because he is one damn fine, well-rounded, alpha sweetheart.

And if you haven't read a Stephanie Rose book, well, read this first, and then go back and devour her other works. But remember that Drew is mine.

3.5 stars. This was ok. Nothing terrible but nothing great. I found myself skimming and bored at many parts. The H was v likeable but the h was a bit harder to like, especially for the ridiculous hiccup she caused in the relationship just before they finished school. A mediocre read.

4 Fire and Ice Stars!

“I fought hard to not let myself fall in love with him, but I feared I already lost the battle.”

“He made me feel loved, protected, and worth it.”

Simmer is a sweet second chance romance with a slow burn that leaves you aching for more…

Simmer follows the story of Sara and Drew. We first got a glimpse and taste of Sara in Rewrite. And I’ll be honest with you, I wasn’t 100% sure that she would be able to redeem herself. But, if there is one thing I love, it’s when authors prove me wrong. And let me tell you, Stephanie Rose, totally proved me wrong.

In Simmer, we finally get to see Sara’s full story. We get to see everything that she endured and get to understand the choices that she made. She’s not perfect, but she was doing what she thought was best and at times, let fear drive her actions. All she ever wanted was the one thing she’s never gotten: Love. Sara’s life has never been easy, but when life presents her with a second chance and an opportunity to grab a long forgotten dream, she takes a chance and hopes that this decision will give her everything she’s always wanted. But, the one thing she never saw coming was Drew. Drew is everything Sara has always wanted, but never let herself have. He’s young, sexy, confident and totally charming. His presence is consuming and he is the type of man that won’t give up on the things that he wants. He sees beyond Sara’s tough exterior and will do anything to bring her out of her shell and put a smile on her face. But timing is everything and Sara can’t afford any distractions. The fire that burns between these two is hotter than ever and a fire like that can not be ignored….

For me, Simmer answered so many questions. I loved getting to really know and understand Sara. I loved getting to see Josh and Briana again. The relationship between these three is so complicated, but I really enjoyed seeing their situation change and grow. I loved seeing the way they came together and how strong their family unit became.

I adored Drew for Sara. He was exactly the friend she needed and wasn’t going to let Sara push him away. He showed her that she was deserving of love and kindness. That family isn’t always bonded by blood; that family can be who you choose. Drew was sweet and charming and completely swoon-worthy.

And speaking of Drew and Sara, I just loved these two together. Their romance was the perfect slow burn. I just loved watching their friendship grow into something more. Their chemistry was off the charts and I couldn’t help but be consumed by their story.

Simmer is a fabulous read from beginning to end. I thought Simmer was passionate and well-written. It’s filled with real characters and real situations. The story is easy to connect with and will consume you. Sara isn’t perfect. She is real. She is flawed. But, I promise you, her story is worth it and is definitely worth checking out!

I loved this book and what the essence of it was. A strong woman fighting to give her daughter the very best she could. Sara suffered a huge rejection in her life by the two people who always should be by her side. This is the first time I met Sara as I have not read the book where she was i introduced yet. Apparently, she was not the most lovable person but she is in this book. So obviously she has changed for the best. I also loved the setting in this novel. Sara being in culinary school to become a chef. The chemistry between the characters was evident and i loved his relationship with Victoria, Sara’s daughter.

There's something to be said about an author who can make you love a character that you went in despising. Simmer is about Sara and Drew. If you read Rewrite (which you absolutely SHOULD!) Then you know Sara was kind of a witch......with a b.

I absolutely know why Stephanie named this one "Simmer" because that's exactly what Drew and Sara did. The heat between them was palpable! One of my favorite reading experiences is being in my Stephanie Rose bubble. I completely shut the rest of the world down and dive right in. I get the most amazing feelings reading her words, it almost feels like something whimsical happening. The way her characters meet.....interact......fall in love, always so magical.

Sara is a single mother who has been doing everything on her own, so much so that she's kind of blocked everything and everyone else in her life out. No family. No friends. No boyfriends. Just focusing on taking care of Victoria. Now that Victoria's father is back in the picture its taking some getting used to but it has also opened up an opportunity for Sara to do something for herself for once and pursue her dream.

Sara is here for one thing, complete her schooling, gain a career and provide the life she and Victoria have always deserved.....but in walks Drew. This guy. He is absolutely mouth watering, gorgeous, beautiful inside and out, caring, unselfish. Drew wants to be 'friends" but he's relentless in his affections for her. Sara isn't used to wanting or needing someone, to having help or being able to depend on anyone but herself. No matter how much she tries to push him away. He's there. He's always there.

Simmer is so passionate, real and complex. There's so many layers to Sara that we didn't see in Rewrite and it really explains her tough exterior. She has been through so much. needless to say, I fell hard for Sara and Drew and their relationship.

Also, Eeeeep there was a little cameo from Lucas and Joey that I LOVED so much!!!!!! AHHH!!

I'm already planning my next re read of this amazing book!!

Simmer by Stephanie Rose is a slow burn, single parent, contemporary romance told in dual POV. The main character, Sara, was introduced in the book Rewrite, and from what I understand other characters from that book reappear in this one as well. Simmer is a standalone, so it's not necessary to have read Rewrite first. In fact, this is the first book I've read by the author, and in no way did I feel like I was missing any prior information.

The story follows 32-year-old, single mother, Sara as she returns to college to complete her Culinary Arts degree. This requires her to live on campus for a year while her 9-year-old daughter stays with her father, Josh. Sara has never been away from Victoria for so long, but she can't pass up this opportunity that will open doors to a better life for them both. She has no room for distractions as she focuses on her goals. But Sara never expected to meet Drew.

When 25-year-old, IT graduate student, Drew meets Sara, he's immediately drawn to her. Not only is she incredibly attractive, but she also seems to have substance, and unlike most women he encounters, she doesn't throw herself at him and he really likes that about her. Sara has a lot of issues and hang-ups. So Drew forms a friendship with her and slowly begins to chip away at and break down her walls. Their friendship eventually turns into a romantic relationship. But what's going to happen after graduation when it's time for Sara to go back home?

I really enjoyed this story. I thought Sara and Drew were both likeable and relatable characters. I loved how Drew knew exactly what he wanted and how patient he was with Sara as he waited for her to open up and get on the same page. When I got this book I had no idea that there was another story that came before it. I'll definitely be reading Rewrite for Josh and Brianna's story because I want more of these characters. Drew and Sara's love story is a delicious, simmering, slow-burning romance and the title fits it perfectly.

Simmer is simply a five star read. I was so enthralled with the story from the first page.

Sara’s definitely a flawed person. But it’s her flaws that make her such a relatable character. Her fears, her brokenness, the depths of her love for her daughter are all part of her appeal to this reader.

She’s been kicked out of her home when she turns up pregnant from a one night stand and it’s several years later when her one night stand, Josh finds out she’s given birth to their daughter, Victoria. But the relationship between Josh and Sara isn’t the focus of this beautiful story. Sara finally decides to go back to school to become a chef. Josh agrees to raise their daughter while Sara’s at school, much to her relief.

But it’s the relationship between Sara & Drew that really makes this story a compelling one. Sara meets Drew her first day on campus. Already older than the other students, Sara tries to make sure that she keeps her head down and her eye on the prize. But Drew slowly breaks down those protective walls that Sara erected a long time ago. As their relationship blossoms, Sara is constantly fighting her feelings for the younger Drew. But Drew is relentless. He will not be denied. He finds a small opening in her heart and does his best to make a home there.

This was an amazing story and I thoroughly enjoyed the slow “simmer” this book kept me on the whole way through.

I was so glad to see Sara get her story told! In Rewrite her character has many flaws, but you know there is a story there. The chip on her shoulder she carried most of Josh and Brianna’a story was created for a reason. And in Simmer we get to look past her hard exterior shell and see this lady for who she is. A mother, a provider, and a chef. But she is also is loyal, loving and a lady who deserves to find happiness. When she lets her guard down she loves deeply. So much so, it scares her. Loving Sara isn’t easy, but Drew is up for the challenge.
Drew is younger than Sara but the perfect match for her. He teaches her to let go of some of the control she feels she needs to grasp onto. Their relationship is beautiful to watch as it emerges from friends to lovers. She doesn’t make it easy on him. I love Drew’s commitment to not only Sara, but Victoria. This little girl continues to steal your heart with this book.
Sara’s story has her facing her past and moving forward. Sometimes closure doesn’t give us answers, but it allows us freedom. And as Sara finds her freedom, she also discovers a beautiful love.

Awesome book! Highly recommend it!

4.5 🌟
This was such a cute, wholesome book which I really enjoyed reading ! I loved the slow burn and the fact that Drew and Sara didn't immediately come together, but rather became friends before they became lovers. It made the story more believable in my eyes and also was sort of more romantic this way.
Don't get me wrong, I think there's nothing wrong about love developing from a one night stand, but somehow this made it more old school and also deeper on some sort of level, in my opinion.
Also I loved Drew as a male protagonist, because he was such a cute and good guy! He had his heart in the right place. The reverse age gap was something I really enjoyed, since it's mostly the guy that's older than the woman.
Sara was also likable, although at the beginning I wasn't quite sure if I would like her or not. In the end she was character with some flaws which I really enjoyed and made it more real to me, since in real life people aren't perfect too.
All in all this is a cute, heartwarming read which I can definitely recommend! ❤
