Magic Wars: Demons of New Chicago

Demons of New Chicago - The Complete Series

Rate this book

If you enjoy the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, or Demon Days and Vampire Nights by K.F. Breene then dive right into the dangerous depths of New Chicago. Beware of headstrong heroines with snark. These ladies don’t bark. They bite.

I’m hired to stop a demon summoning. The last thing I expect is to end up bonded to one instead.

Being a supernatural bounty hunter isn’t exactly a popular job. But after the magic wars, there aren’t many things a human can do that will put food on the table.

Thankfully anything my right hook can’t handle, my guns can.

Or so I thought.

When a demon summoning runs awry, the being that comes into this world changes everything.

I’m not sure if he’s truly a monster or a god, but one look into his flame-filled eyes and I know–Ronan will never let me go.

If he can catch me, that is.

Game on, motherf*cker.

Warning: You can expect a kick-butt supernatural bounty hunter and a possessive demon love interest. They both have a lot of growing to do. If you don't like flawed characters that have to improve--this one won't be for you. Demons of New Chicago is slow-burn but high-steam. It was written for readers who struggle to find books that have enough action and romance.

Overall, I had a pretty good time with this book, but it wasn’t the kind of series that completely stuck with me.

The characters were definitely the best part. They had a lot of depth, and I really got invested in their relationships. I loved the found family vibe, and honestly, the FMC’s best friend ended up being my favorite character. I loved how she never put up with the FMC's shit. True bestie right there.

The FMC herself frustrated me a little in the middle. She spent a lot of time just wallowing instead of trying to fix what went wrong, and that slowed things down. I got why she was struggling, but I kept thinking, come on, do something! The MMC was supportive, but honestly, I wanted him to be more… intense. He gave her a lot of space, but I really wanted him to be more on top of things, more obsessive in a way that matched how much she clearly needed help. Their relationship could have been way more exciting if he’d leaned into that.

The plot had its ups and downs too. Some parts were really engaging and had me turning pages, while other parts dragged or felt rushed. That said, it’s super bingeable as a complete series, so it’s easy to get through.

Overall, I’d say it was an enjoyable read. The characters were strong, the found family element was great, and there were some really fun moments. It’s just not one of those series that’s going to stick in my head forever. Still, if you’re into demons, gritty action, and characters that feel real, it’s definitely worth checking out.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

This is a four book series built around a dystopian Chicago after a war between humans and supernatural leaves humans at the book of the food chain including our female heroine Piper. After a coven of witches kill Piper's parents and put her sister Bree's body into a stasis she spends the next decade both hunting supernatural with a vengeance while trying to find a cure for her younger sister. But Piper has a dark secret even she refuses to acknowledge to herself. In a search for a spell to save Bree Piper accidentally calls Ronan a powerful demon to earth. And it turns out Piper is Ronan's atma or fated mate. Ronan has no clue as to how to woo a human female and Piper has no interest in being the mate of a demon even if her body aches for him. Over the course of the four book enemies become friends and friends become enemies and enemies become lovers as the cast of main characters expand.

For a Post-apocalyptic Chicago, the world building is amazing. Love all the characters and their interrelationships. The growth of the characters throughout the series is spot on and really amazing writing throughout the entire series. Cannot wait to read about Nat and "The Devil." Definitely recommend this series!!

I loved these books, lots of adventure and magic and a solid romance.
The world building and fear for all the powerless humans, I liked the idea that a former human could have so much impact on this world and the other world.
I loved Ronan and Piper and all their family and friends.
I even liked Bree and Lucifer!
The ending was all I expected from it & so happy the babies were ok!

awesome read

I think this book was simply amazing. I finish the series in like 3 days. I would like to see what happens piper and crew as the kids grow up. Will there be anymore kids added to the mix. Will Bree and Anders end up together.

Fun Series

I saw this described as perfect for fans of KF Breene and I agree. I really liked this series and the “flawed” main character who was still tough as nails.

Too many characters to really get attached, too many threads not completed.

binge read this book. Book 1 was fantstic, but books 2-4 are just drawn out. Yes, somethings happens always, but I was missing some pace. All in all 3,5 - 4 stars, except book 1 that's great.
