Submariners who make history rarely come home.Commander Alex Coleman was watching paint dry when World War III started. Everyone expected China to be the Big Bad, but while China was busy with their own civil war, India, France, and Russia started gobbling up prime territory on the ocean floor. Stealth being the best gig in warfare, submarines are at the forefront of this unexpected conflict. Enter USS Jimmy America’s oldest attack submarine.
Being contrary, unorthodox, and good at pissing admirals off got Alex sentenced to a sub meant for the breakers. His crew is assembled of rejects and misfits no one else wants, from the cowardly XO to the drunk sonar tech. The Navy prefers them all on the sidelines, and no one expects them to matter. But sometimes even the U.S. Navy forgets that the enemy gets a vote.
So, when his boat sets sail to escort Convoy 57 though an unimportant patch of the Indian Ocean, Alex anticipates another dull milk run. Not a battle no one can win. Missiles start raining down, and when their boring escort becomes an all-out firestorm, Alex and USS Jimmy Carter are all that stand between thousands of civilian refugees and an enemy armada. One ancient submarine against dozens of enemies makes for terrible odds...and even victory might end in death for Alex’s crew of rejects.
It’s the first real battle of Alex’s career. Does he have what it takes to save his crew from this fiery inferno?
Or will Alex Coleman and Jimmy Carter join the long list of the fallen?
R.G. Roberts is the author of fantasy, military science fiction, and alternate history novels and serial fiction, currently publishing on Amazon and Kindle Vella.
This was a great book - Really good story, believable characters, it kept on building until the end of the book. In a way I was disappointed to finish this one; I'd definitely liked to have a bit more on the fall-out from Convoy57 - Maybe that comes in the next book?
As all books in series the transition from one scene to the next was smooth and continuity was not lost. Humanizing the characters was exceptional. Those of us who completed a military career could relive many the the people interactions, some good and some not so good. Regardless the mission is a team exercise and when the "weak link" is shown the team suffers. The role and sacrifice s of the members and their families is well articulate d.
With 31 years in the service (6 in the Navy and 25 in the Air Force, Vet Nam followed years later with Desert Storm) I can't say enough about how well the author writes such realistic story's. Her service time has done her well and her stories shows both crews and their Officers as real people overcoming obstacles as only being in one of the services can do. Congratulations on another well written book, looking forward to reading your next.
The whole series was outstanding but the this last work "I will Try" is special. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next one. You have a special talent for writing R.G. Roberts...please keep writing outstanding reads. My hat is off to you. Go NAVY!
R.G.Roberts has presented us with an extremely well written novel showing extreme excitement and near tearful lows. The combat is amazing, the family and friends real to the reader. I have steered away from future military books but that was my mistake. Truly entertaining and fun read. I'm "On to the Next". Thanks R.G.Roberts!
Another good book in the series. As a former submariner my self I like the plot of these books. Still some missing words that cause me to reread sentences but the plots are good. Getting ready to read the next one!
By far the best book of the series so far. Lots of action early on made me think the story would end before it did. But even after the combat action, the story was gripping right until the end. Looking forward to reading more in the series!
Ms. Roberts is a truly an outstanding storyteller that brought a perfect mix of adventure, humor and story satisfaction to this picky old veteran!!! Thank you for your service and these terrific reading moments!!
Really well developed story with depth and meticulous detail. Has held me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. Great series of books. Cannot wait for the next installment.
One of the best written submarine book published in a long time! It was a pleasure to read about a commanding officer to take the time to finish going to the bottom twice and still making it home.
Holy cow!! What a story. This is a long book, but for the four days it took me to read it I felt emotionally involved with the crew. I highly recommend this
Another Great Book in the war of the submarine Series. A very exciting read, that was easy to follow. I have already downloaded, Fortune Favorsthe bold.
