Gruesome Jack the Ripper inspired killings? Awesome!

This volume marks the first of the cases Kyu, Ryu, Megu, Kinta, and Kazuma work on and their style of deduction is amazing. Truly, they make a brilliant team. They all possess their own individual strengths, but it is as a team that they come together to find the clues and finish the investigation.

This particular volume is especially interesting because it is the first time that the group comes to solve a case, and the case is also an ingenious one. This is quite possibly one of my favorite fictional crime investigations. The story buildup is fascinating and the conclusion is done so well.

The artwork is a big plus in this manga and I can't wait to read more! This time I am going to try and finish the whole series at a go.

The final exam to enter the “Q Class”, the Qualified Class at the legendary Dan Morihiko’s Detective School is to solve the unresolved mystery of the “Jack of the Ripper” case, a murder that took place behind two locked doors. For this purpose, thirteen people, both examinees and school staff, have visited the site of the murder, Kirisaki Island… However, as they go to look over what should merely been a reproduction of the old murder scene, they are met with a terrible ‘reality’.

THE TRAGEDY OF KIRISAKI ISLAND

“We won’t be getting off this island for a while. And the killer, this jack the ripper, is here… on the island! The victim was Saburou-san, one of us. The next person killed may very well be another candidate… You could be killed the same way as him!”

True to Ryu Amakusa’s saying, the tragedy doesn’t stop there. Two candidates also fell victim to the killer, and each one is bloodier and in more pieces than before… It seems this “Jack the Ripper” taunts them all, challenging them to try to find him. Can Kyu, Megu, Kinta, Kazuma, and Ryu solve the mystery before they all get killed by this infamous murderer?

This book covers the continuation of the first book and the final conclusion of the case. Though it is getting more morbid with each flip of the page, the ending of the case turns out to be… enlightening. It’s like waking up from a bad dream in the safety of your own bed room. I wonder, though, whether the trick to create the locked-room murder is one hundred percent fool proof. Firstly, as someone who loves to cook, I think inserting a metal key inside a ball made of flour and butter, no matter how, will make the key a bit sticky or even buttery, and I don’t think rats will lick that effect off. And I think a good detective will notice that even though he picks up the key using gloves or a handkerchief.

MEET THE MAIN CHARACTERS

Kyu

“It’s a murder case, isn’t it? It’s important to figure it out and solve the case quickly! You’re the weird one. Someone got killed… but you’re acting like this is all just a game.”

Another reason why I like this boy better than the others. He doesn’t consider a crime scene only a challenge to his wits and deductive ability. He should say this same word to the famous Shinichi Kudo, if only they were in the same universe.

Megumi Minami

“I’m fine. If I break down at every murder scene. I’ll never become a detective…!”

This 14-year-old girl is a special child at the National Gifted Development Research Centre. Before entering grade school, at the age of four, she identified a serial bank robber with her photographic memory, and helped the police department search for the suspected and arrest him for those services, making her the youngest person ever to receive the superintendent general’s medal. Her photographic memory turns to have its negative side. I worry about her mental state, what will those horrific images will do to this poor girl’s sanity?

Kintarou Tooyama

“If I backed out now, my ancestors would weep!”

His father is a police superintendent. He’s inherited the Tooyama family’s secret technique, which has been passed on since the Edo period. He has a third degree black belt in karate and judo, a fourth degree black belt in kendo, and has won multiple competitions. He dislikes Kazuma and I can’t blame him for feeling so, as I also do.

Kazuma Narusawa

“I’m recording information on today’s case… in the detective program I made.”

He developed his first game at the age of seven, and made many more hits after that. He’s the prodigy third son of the Narusawa conglomerate’s president. But to be honest I don’t really like him compared to other Q-Class students. In my eyes, he just a smug little brat who will definitely die first if they’re stranded on an island where no gadget can function properly. And what kind of perverted mind he has! It’s more natural for Kinta to be a bit perverted, given his age, but this kid is only 11 years old! What are you? Shin Chan?

Ryu Amakusa

“When we’re in a situation like this, I can’t help but think, that the mystery goes even deeper."

Nothing significant in his family history or where he came from, but it is said that last year he unofficially investigated and solved at least five brutal cases. Of them, he was present at the crime for two, and the other three cases he read in the news, solved himself, and gave the information to the police to arrest the suspect. Against all odds, he stay cool and calm, which somehow gives him an impression of a cold blooded murderer. Even though he and Kyu are totally different, both can get along pretty well.

Morihiko Dan

“As a detective, you will come across mysterious and dangerous cases. A detective must have the ability to question the truth without backing down easily.”

He’s actually has made up his mind of who will be the member of Q Class, but somehow decides to give them one final test. That explains why, rather than behaving like the great detective he is, he just plays the part ‘waiting for others to come up with the solution’.

THE MORAL VALUES OF THE STORY

Two heads are better than one. Or in this case: five heads!
