Tightly packed… sometimes I wish the reader had more of a chance to guess themselves, but for some it’ll do. Kazuma is still a brat, but Kinta is heaping on him too heavily as well. And well-meaning family members… at least it’s lowkey.

We also see the first sign of meiosei rearing its ugly head.

This volume was great. The case was again, an inventive one, but there were some other notable elements in it. This time, the group witnesses the crime first-hand and have to figure out who the perpetrator of the crime is. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they uncover murky details that eventually lead to the identity of the criminal.

While the mystery itself was great, the backstory was even more engaging and emotional. I loved this case especially since the conclusion was a hopeful one.

While each previous book only focuses on a single case, this fifth instalment will be the first book in the whole series involve many cases to solve. The Q Class will meet again with the “other candidates” from the final test which turn out to be the students from A Class, practically their rival for the next successor of Morihiko Dan, who’ve already solved some difficult cases and received an award from the police HQ.

FIRST HOMEWORK

“I’ve already decided that Q Class is only consisted of five people. If one person goes up, someone is going to go down.”

Finally comes the day when Saborumaru can take his revenge on the Q Class: a class determination exam in one month time! Looks like there will be a switch between Q class with A, B, C, and D class which is done according to the achievement of that concerned student. As if it’s not enough to make the Q Class’ day gloomy, Dan-sensei gives them a homework from a case he solved back then in his active days. The deadline is tomorrow, can everyone finish the homework?

This story is told from Megumi’s point of view, following her being down after the Q Class solving the mystery in Kamikakushi Village. It is a bit lighter and does not contain any bloody scene and there are some parts worthy of some giggles or laughter. It also show how Megumi gets closer to Kyu, as Kinta gets closer to Kazuma, in their own weird way. More importantly, it also reveals why Kinta has the right to be suspicious of Ryu!

AFTER SCHOOL DANGER

“There’s no doubt about it. There really was a thief who entered here!”

Meg invites Kyu and Kinta to eat at her house and meet her older sister, only to find the signs that someone is breaking into her house. It is set in a light tone as the previous story, though a little bit more serious since it involves a real case of thievery. The conclusion of the chapter reveals the possibility of a connection between Megumi and Ryu and implies that somehow there’s lurking a more dangerous danger than a thief breaking into your house.

MURDER IN SPIRIT SUMMONING

This time, the Q Class will face another case related to supernatural event. Kaoru Ichinose, Kyu’s classmate, begs him to come to the spirit summoning of her mother, who was dead in a plane accident. With Kyu and the rest of Q Class, in addition to seven members from Kaoru’s family, there are 12 people present in the summoning. All of them, hand in hand, make a big circle, while the spiritualist stands in the middle of the circle, calling for the mother’s spirit in total darkness. But something is different, a bit wrong, even, and when they turn on the light, the spiritualist lies down with a knife embedded through her back. How can someone stab the spiritualist without even a tiny ray of light? Is it true that the angry spirit who has done it? Can Q Class solve the clever yet terrible trick and unveil yet another sad case?

I guess this case will be the saddest and most tragic case I ever found in the whole series.

This case also becomes the first case to introduce us to a hidden organization called Meiosei or Pluto. The details are not clear yet, but it seems dangerous enough to create an uproar among teachers in Dan Detective Schools and an increase in security. We just know that this organization clearly masters the art of hypnotism, to plant a killing intent inside others. Judging from Dan-sensei and Nanami’s expression, I guess Meiosei is the kind of villain of the series! Isn't it exciting?

A DEDUCTION BATTLE

“We will have a reasoning match between the top 5 members of A-Class and the top 5 members of Q-Class.”

Dan-sensei agrees to the A Class request to hold a reasoning match, hoping that if they win, they can take the Q-Class position. One A-Class vs one Q-Class, who’s battling against who is determined by drawing cards. Four matches have passed with a tie between them. Now it’s up to Kyu whether the Q Class will stay or not. His opponent is Yukihira. And the case is… an unsolved locked room murder case DDS just got yesterday. Who will win the match? Kyu? Yukihira?

Well, basically the idea is very much similar to that in the first chapter, implying how desperate the A class is to take the place of the Q class, something that is understandable given the fact that the A class is senior in terms of age and experience. It is my least favorite of all chapters because what fun is it to have four solved cases in just two short chapters? It is interesting to see the attitude and the way the boys from A class handle the cases thrown at them (except the very predictable Saborumaru) but kinda disappointing to see the performance of Q class (except Ryu, and Kyu because his case is not over yet). And what’s with the match? It’s just so unfair. Kinta and Gooda get one with math in it, which is obviously Gooda’s forte, and Megu and Saborumaru get one that will be a piece of cake for Megu with her photographic memory. Ryu and Kyu get ones that the other Q class will definitely not be able to solve. The cases should be equal in the level of difficulty to make this a fair reasoning match!

MEET THE MAIN CHARACTERS

Kyu

Different from Ryu, he’s so sympathetic towards others. It is clear that he develops a crush on Megumi, to the point that he disguises himself as an old grandma to give her the hint to solve the homework given by DDS. He’s a good natured boy, he knows that the tragic case of Ichinose family will leave Kaoru devastated, so he keeps in touch with her to make sure she is doing okay.

Megumi Minami

“My bad habit is directly asking for other people’s help when I was being pressed… If I become a detective that means there’s a probability I will have to face a case all by myself and I have to solve the clues all by myself too.”

Well, in the reasoning match, she did well to win another score for Q-Class after Ryu, giving them the same score with the A-Class: 2. BUT. Her opponent was none other than Saborumaru himself. So I’m not really sure whether Megu has proved herself to develop well or not. At least she did not lose to that arrogant pitiful boy, because if she did, I don’t really know what to say about her except it won’t be good and flattering.

Kintarou Tooyama

When Gooda calls him brawns for brains, I can’t really disagree. Kinta is quick enough to make a deduction, but usually only the half of it is true. But if the case requires strength to stop the culprit from doing something worse or something like that, he is the man to rely on. He is also too easy to provoke.

Kazuma Narusawa

I’m totally right to judge he is completely useless without his laptop. He relies on his gadget too much that even when faced with a really simple question that he knows the answer to, he needs to consult the laptop first. Like, what?! I think if someone wants to stab him with a knife, he will need to consult the laptop first. Bummer!

Ryu Amakusa

There’s nothing much to tell anymore about him because he hasn’t changed, he’s still mysterious and aloof, and clearly somebody to rely on to if there is a battle of wits.

Kotaru Nanami

He definitely loves to disguise himself as Morihiko Dan.

THE MORAL VALUES OF THE STORY

Why do people so easily assume that inheritance is always in money form? Particularly those coming from wealthy family. It’s as if there’s nothing more precious than money for people like them!
