Writing has always been my passion. It was my favourite hour a week at primary school, and I started on my first, truly abysmal book as a teenager. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to study literature at university which led to an MA in Creative Writing. I spent a long time writing kids’ books, including funny fairy tales, dystopic adventures and serious issue-based YA, before switching to murder mysteries last year.

I grew up in a crime fiction family and spent a long time dreaming up the idea for my detective Izzy Palmer’s debut novel. A Corpse Called Bob is my first full-length book for adults in what is already becoming a long series.

I’m a Welsh-Irish-Englishman originally from South London but now living with my French/Spanish wife and slightly muddled daughter in Burgos, a beautiful city in the north of Spain. I write overlooking the Castilian countryside, trying not to be distracted by the vultures and red kites that fly past my window each day.

It was December 1927 when Marius Quin, struggling writer, was invited by his old friend, Isabella Montague, to Everham Hall for the New Year's Eve celebrations, hosted by famous actor, Cecil Sinclair. Marius and his basset hound, Percy, drove to Everham Hall, where they settled in, and then met the other guests. When everyone saw Cecil, it was obvious he was very drunk, but full of himself, and immediately tensions rose, and discomfort rippled through the guests.

It was when the host was murdered, and the police were unable to travel to Everham Hall because of the abundance of snow, that Marius and Bella decided to investigate and oust the killer. But obviously, finding a real killer was much more difficult that creating one in his fiction books. Would they solve the case, or would there be more deaths?

Murder at Everham Hall is the 1st in A Marius Quin Mystery series by Benedict Brown and it was very ordinary. Right from the first few pages, I didn't like the writing style, I didn't like Marius Quin's character, and sadly it continued in this vein for me. I've read other books with the same set up - trapped in an estate house by snow, with a killer roaming amongst the guests. Unfortunately, Murder at Everham Hall was not for me.

With thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Here's the deal. I thought I'd give this book four stars all along. I really did. Then near the end, I went, "WHAT?"

Seriously, I was ticked. I thought, "You totally botched it, Brown! What are you thinking?" That's when it dropped to three stars. I could have torn out my hair (something I can't afford to do).

Had I been reading a physical book, I would not have been caught out like I was. So glad I was listening to the audio. Because he got me. Not only that, but he got me well. Once I figured out that he had it wrong and threw my conniption, then him getting it right (you know, by having everything fall into place where I thought it should) worked. And worked super well.

Absolutely the best way to be right while totally wrong and then some. I love Marius and Bella. They have similarities to Tommy and Tuppence without being carbon copies. Excellent. And I loved seeing Lord Edgington and Chrissy mentioned. That's THE BEST.

Now to wait. FOREVER. For the next. *commence drumming fingers*

This is a very nice start to a new, cozy historical mystery series. Against the backdrop of 1920s, England Marious Quin is solving a murder at a New Years Eve house party. As an author of a best-selling mystery novel, the other guests naturally turn to him to investigate the crime. With his dear friend Bella as his partner, our intrepid amateur sleuth endeavors to do just that.

Murder at Everham Hsll is a delightfully intriguing snowed in murder mystery. I'm looking forward to what comes next for our protagonist, Marious Quin.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Benedict Brown for a copy of this ARC to read and review!

Oh I think I am really going to enjoy this new cozy mystery series!! Marius Quin is a witty character, full of humor and charm! This first book reconnects Marius with his ex love Bella … and together they form a new sleuthing duo when they are snowed in at Everham Hall for a New Year’s Eve holiday weekend. One of the guests has murdered the host of the lavish estate and they are determined to find out the truth! His mopey hound, Percy, tags along on this adventure and is pretty stinkin’ adorable.

I'm excited to see how this relationship between Marius and Bella evolves as the series continues!

I love the 1920’s era and thought the author did a fantastic job making this age come to life! It’s a quick and clever whodunit murder mystery with a classic and timeless setting! The ending was nicely done and took me by surprise! This book would pair nicely with a hot cup of something, a comfy blanket in your favorite reading chair on a chilly winter day! The perfect comfort read!

happy reading!

This is a fun start to a cozy mystery series set in late 1920's England. Mystery writer Marius Quin has had one successful novel (A Killer in the Wings) and is now struggling with his second book. Oh, he's got the first chapter written - without the vaguest idea of what happens next - and his editor has taken to bribing him to turn in additional chapters. A chance encounter with his childhood friend Bella (Lady Isabella Montague) and a New Year's invitation to movie star Cecil Sinclair's estate is a welcome diversion from worrying about paying his mortgage.

And when Cecil Sinclair face-plants shortly after the guests arrive, and is later found murdered, everyone at Everham Hall is a suspect, plus a sudden snowstorm makes the roads impassable with no police officers on site. Marius starts to investigate, but soon realizes "none of the evidence that typically appears in mystery novels was there at the scene of the crime." And writers have a bit of an advantage as "starting with the killer and working towards the murder is far easier than the other way around."

The author does an excellent job with all the secondary characters and the plot does not lag as one after another person is suspected and when the murder is finally solved .... wait, there's more to uncover. Having a mystery writer trying to solve an actual murder add a extra layer of humor, and Brown really runs with that. For example, at one crucial moment in the story, Marius says
"Oh my goodness [....] I know how to finish my book!"
"Marius!" Bella did not look happy with me. "I think someone's about to be killed."
I tried to hide just how happy I was. "Yes, well ... that too."
It took me a while to really get into the story, and once everyone is gathered at Everham Hall, the book really takes off. And as the first in a series, we are left with lots of strings to pull at. What is going to happen with Bella and her muscle-bound boyfriend Gilbert? Will Marius finally finish his second book? Will he learn more about his missing father? I look forward to the next book in this new series. 4.5 stars.

Murder at Everham Hall by Benedict Brown is the first of a splendid new series called Marius Quin Mysteries. What a start! Set in 1927, this story is jam packed with lively wit, quirky characters, red herrings and cleverness. I felt an instant connection and was riveted to each page, even giggling out loud at times. Spellbinding books such as this are pure joy!

Recently flush with success from his bestseller, author Marius Quin now has spent every penny and his only feasible earning potential is to write another. However, writer's grip has a firm grip and Marius needs inspiration. Quite by accident he spots his dear childhood friend and ex-girlfriend he last saw a decade ago. Lady Isabella Montague invites him to a New Year's Eve party at Everham Hall. Well. When the host is murdered, as a mystery writer Marius is naturally drawn to the body and along with Bella scrutinizes the crime scene. The team of two inveigle and investigate. Layer upon layer of secrets are discovered but the freshly-minted amateur sleuths are undeterred and discover the killer lurking in their midst.

Benedict Brown's writing always, always grabs my attention. It is quick, smart and funny, very appealing to sink one's teeth into. What a pleasure to be privy to the believable historical bits, deceptions and resolution. Brown is an auto-read author for me and has proven himself yet again with this new series. Do be sure to read his notes which include his research and inspiration. Compelling stuff!

My sincere thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this delightful novel. I adored it and cannot wait to see what the author has in store next!

Quick Summary: A mystery writer slips into the role of amateur detective

My Review: Murder at Everham Hall by Benedict Brown is A Marius Quinn Mystery. It is book one in an exciting new series set in the late 1920s.

About the Book: Marius Quinn is having trouble completing his new manuscript. As he is now under the gun to produce something of substance, he is very much feeling the pressure. When Marius runs into his old love, she quickly invites him to an old English estate for the holidays. While there, the host of the gathering is murdered. Quinn suddenly finds himself thrust into the role of master detective. During his investigation, old feelings emerge, secrets are revealed, relationships are exposed, and a killer taunts the would-be detective. Who will the murderer end up being?

My Final Say: Book one was a great start for Marius Quinn. He is a likable character with a solid backstory. His connection with his investigative partner was set up so well, to the point that more, most certainly, has to come for them. Friends and foes were positioned in such a way as to make things interesting. I cannot wait to read book two.

Other: I appreciated the presentation of the background research that went into creating this work. I found it all rather intriguing. Additionally, the narration of this book was spot on.

This was a nice cozy mystery, with more twists than I expected. The premise of an author of detective novels becoming an accidental detective is not very believable, obviously, but the author cleverly uses tongue in cheek humor to have the narrator himself state this. I like dry humor, so the sprinkling of that throughout the mystery was nice. The audiobook was very well done and made it super easy to listen to. It’s the kind of mystery that had me intrigued, but never on edge, and picking up on clues, but never fully able to solve it. Overall very enjoyable, and I’m looking forward to the next one! Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This book, by the author of the Lord Edington series is the first in a new series that finds Marius Quin, veteran of WWI and successful author of a murder mystery novel about to muck up the whole thing. He has a terrible case of writer’s block (we learn in the afterword that this term did not exist in the 1920s) and he is deeply in debt. He has a chance meeting with childhood friend/ex-flame Bella Montague who invites him to a New Years Eve party at Everham Hall, just outside London where he lives with his mother, aunt, uncle and erstwhile basset hound, Percy Anderson II.

Excited at the opportunity to spend time with Bella, he accepts and he and Percy make their way to Everham Hall, owned by famous actor Cecil Sinclair. Joining them in the house party are Cecil girlfriend, Poppy, Cecil’s father and his paramour, Bella and her boyfriend, her boyfriend’s clerk and a director/actress couple. When one member of the house party is murdered and the house is cut off by a snowstorm it’s up to Marius and Bella to uncover the murderer before he or she can strike again.

This is a cute, fast-moving story, much in the vein of the Lord Edington stories (I might like those a bit better, maybe because of the descriptions of the food?) Marius and flawed and self-effacing making him an excellent hero. Bella was a little tougher to take (she can’t see her boyfriend’s a buffoon?). Overall, though a fun diversion and a good cozy mystery. Brown is good with period details and deserves a wider audience.

The first book I’ve read by the author & it certainly won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this cosy mystery, which had strong characters, twists & turns, red herrings & more than a sprinkling of humour. As well as reading the book I also listened to the audiobook & that was just as good. The narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the book to life. I really liked Marius & look forward to more in the series

I really like the Lord Edington series by this same author and hoped that this would be just as much fun. Maybe because it's the first in the series and it takes some take to gain traction, but I was a bit disappointed.

I didn't like Marius much at first and as the book progressed, nothing happened to change my opinion in either direction. He is too critical of himself, although maybe rightly so?, and spends far too much time mooning over his ex-girlfriend. Granted, her new guy is a simpering idiot, but Marius needs to respect that relationship and move on. None of the other characters are especially likeable either, so I really didn't care much about who among them was a killer.

I should have seen the identity of the culprit coming but did not, although the motive was hinted at often enough that it should have been obvious.

The next book in this series is part of my audio library, so I will listen to it eventually, I'm just not sure when 'eventually' will come.

The protagonist here, Marius Quinn, was a character in the most recent Lord Edgington novel and frankly should have remained there as a supporting actor. Perhaps this new series will improve with subsequent installments (the next book is due in a matter of weeks) but this first go is not up to the standards of other Brown cozy mysteries A slog rather than a quick read

I’ve become addicted to Benedict Brown books. I’m in the middle of the Lord Edgington series, which is clever and funny and really interesting. So when Marius Quin turned up in A Killer in the Wings I decided to detour into this series. I warmed to Marius instantly. I adore stories about writers. I so admire capable people who bring so much joy to my own life. I love the behind the scenes tidbits, the way writers think. There is a lot of that as Marius fits the happenings at the house party into his own writing. I’m not as impressed with Percy, though. A basset hound? Yes, they’re cute but they’re also huge, noisy, drooling, and not built for tucking under your arm. Percy is always being carried around like he’s a lapdog instead of the 60# behemoth he probably is. Maybe he will grow on me. The afterward and historical notes are fascinating. I suggest you Google the Elvetham House, the model for the setting, to have that image in your mind as you read. It’s extraordinary!

What a treat this audiobook was to listen to! When a mystery writer struggling with his craft and his bank account is invited to a swanky New Year’s party, he finds myself inside a real life murder mystery! It was so much fun for this book to be set in 1920s England and the narrator did a fantastic job! I really enjoyed this title and I did not guess the ending! This was a great addition to my stack of holiday reads/listens!

I don't know when Marius Quin exactly captured me - whether it was spending all his money on his family, his car, or his wardrobe, or whether it was the *astute* names he called Gilbert (his love's buffoon-y boyfriend), but it definitely happened by the time he raced the fiend down the driveway!
I wanted Wintery/Christmas vibes and a good mystery, and this story delivered with a fun and vintage atmosphere and cheeky dialogue (with just a tinge of pining).

Marius Quin has writer’s block, and his editor is not impressed that Marius has blown through his advance, is in his office to ask for more money, and hasn’t written anything for a year for his follow up to his first book.

His editor gives him an ultimatum—for every chapter Marius writes, he'll receive 100 pounds, otherwise, no more money. Knowing his new house and car are in jeopardy (he bought these with his advance), and his mother, uncle and aunt will be without a home, so Marius agrees, obviously.

Marius leaves the office and meets his childhood sweetheart Bella outside, who invites him to join her at a weekend house party.

Marius is thrilled to see Bella again, and looks forward to the party with her, despite his family's advice to guard his heart—they know Marius has been pining after Bella since before he left to the fighting in the War, and has kicked himself for not proposing to her before he left.

The party is hosted by Clifford St-Clair, a well known actor, who inherited the house and wealth from his wife. Clifford is mercurial, rude and difficult, and has planned a mystery party for his guests, who are a variety of people, such as Clifford’s father and his fiancée, a banker and his underling, a fellow actress, and various others. One thing Bella neglected to tell him was that her fiancé is there also (he’s the banker).

The weather is snowy, and the roads are poor and soon impassable, stranding everyone in the house. And Clifford is killed before dinner.

Marius, being a mystery writer, is nominated to find the murderer, and he teams up with Bella. She’s actually the brains of the operation, and moves the investigation along in a positive direction, though Marius does provide some needed insight occasionally.

By the time the police inspector arrives, who is a good chap, the murderer is revealed.

This is a super light mystery, with lots of melodrama and ridiculous situations and behaviour. It felt a bit like a Hollywood 1930s comedy, with fast pacing and broad characterization. Marius was often irritating and I think Bella should have been the main character. And not the focus of Marius’ ardour.

This is a quick read, and light enough to function as a chaser between heavier fare.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Storm Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my review.

From the moment I started listening to 'Murder at Everham Hall,' a cozy mystery by Benedict Brown, I was immediately drawn into the world of Marius Quin, a struggling writer in 1920s England. Brown's narrative is delightful, with a wit that had me laughing before the end of chapter one. The book combines the charm of a cozy mystery with the allure of historical fiction, making it an enjoyable and captivating read.

Marius Quin, the protagonist and narrator, faces the dreaded writer's block while attempting to craft his second book. However, his life takes a thrilling turn when he reunites with his childhood sweetheart, Bella, and receives an invitation to a New Year's party at the opulent mansion of a famous actor. As the story unfolds, a murder shakes the tranquil setting, thrusting Marius into a real-life mystery that provides an unexpected remedy for his creative struggles.

One of the book's highlights is the dynamic between Marius and Bella. Their complicated history adds a layer of complexity to their partnership, and it's a joy to watch them work together to unravel the mystery. I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops in the next installment.

The pacing keeps you on the edge of your seat with delightful twists and moments of suspense. I particularly like how each chapter seemed to end at a suspenseful moment, pulling the reader into the next chapter.

The narrator's performance is lovely, with voices for each quirky and likable character. Additionally, I highly recommend listening to/reading the author's notes at the end (also read by the narrator), which provide valuable insights into Brown's historical research and the inspirations behind the book's setting.

In conclusion, 'Murder at Everham Hall' is a delightful and captivating cozy mystery with a clever twist at the end. I am eager to read the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for providing an advanced audiobook copy. Benedict Brown has won me over as a reader, and I can't wait to explore more of his works.

"Murder at Everham Hall" by Benedict Brown is the first installment in the new historical cozy mystery series. We meet a young writer, Marius Quin, when he tries to convince his publisher that his writer's block is temporary and that his second book will soon be published. Alas, he can just present the first chapter without knowing what will happen next. Fortunately, after leaving the publisher, he comes across his childhood friend, Lady Isabella Montague, who invites him to a Boxing Day party at the country house belonging to a famous actor. The event may deliver much-needed inspiration to Marius.

Well, the host is murdered, and Marius decides that he is the most suitable person to find the killer. It is not an easy task since the victim is a rather unpleasant individual, and all the guests at the party seem to have motives to kill him. But uncovering the truth is not the only goal of our self-appointed detective – he wants to rekindle his friendship with Bella, who is also excited to follow all hints leading to the killer. And so the pair becomes partners in solving the crime.

The mystery is light, with occasional solemn notes, because the 28-year-old Marius is also a vet of WWI. The author has a slight tongue-in-a-cheek sense of humor, and the first-person narrative sometimes results in funny dialog when Marius expresses his thoughts in a relatively unsophisticated way. I enjoyed listening to the story but didn't warm up to Marius or Bella. My favorite character was Percy, a dog with a penchant for favoring the most probable suspects. I also loved the songs in the audiobook and the fascinating author's note at the end. Hopefully, the detective collaboration of Bella and Marius will be developed in future installments into a good, cozy mystery/romance story.

This is a very likable book with a Golden Age feel. If you are looking for all the cozy tropes, the Murder at Everham Hall is for you. Amateur sleuth; manor house during New Year's Eve; locked room mystery; 1920s England; no real violence; plenty of red herrings. The unwitting amateur detective was just bumbling enough. The suspects were quirky. The atmosphere was, dare I say, cozy. Marius Quinn has one best-selling mystery book to his name, but he has been struck with horrible writer's block and has spent all his advance, so no money. When Lady Isabella, his long-lost love, invites him to a New Year's gathering at the estate of a famous star of silent films, he jumps at the chance. When he arrives, he discovers an obnoxious host and trashy lover, the host's angry father with his very young girlfriend, a famous director and his actress wife, a young banker, and (horrors!) Isabella's boyfriend, who happens to be the host's banker. When a murder takes place and the police can't reach the estate because of snow, the guests all determine that Marius should investigate with Lady Isabella as his assistant. Great start for a new series.

Murder at Everham Hall is the first book in the A Marius Quin Mystery series by Benedict Brown. This had an interesting premise for the mystery. The mystery was very entertaining, I really enjoyed the writing, and there were definitely a couple of laugh-out-loud moments. However, and unfortunately, I was not a fan of the main character, Marius Quin, and I have little interest in the romance between Marquis and Bella. I do not know if I will continue this specific series but I am interested in potentially reading some other novels by this author.

I have not read any books by this author, but I have seen his books around. This is set after world war one. I actually like that time period for a mystery.

Marius Quin runs into a former childhood friend Bella. They end up at New Year’s Eve party and get secluded because of snow. There’s a murder and some attacks on other attendees. Marius is a budding writer and has written one mystery novel. He gets to put his detective skills at work! Bella has a knack for interviewing people and making them feel comfortable. They make a good team. If there are more books in this series, I would highly recommend starting the series. Very fun and enjoyable. Easy writing to get into.
