The Crown and the Collar

Rate this book
He never saw himself as very special.

Peter has lived on a farm all his life. He loves nothing more than helping his parents tend to their fields and animals. Still, sometimes life in Weston can be a little too quiet; he can’t help but wonder what else is out there. Imagine his surprise when the crown prince of Litkalaa comes knocking and makes him an offer he can’t refuse: wear his collar and become the next royal consort.

Prince Makseka Blackclaw is used to getting everything he wants, which is why he doesn’t get why everyone is making such a big deal about his offer to Peter. He just wants to take the cute boy back to the castle where he’ll be pampered, well-fed, and maybe they’ll have some fun together too. Sadly, it may take more than a few mistakes to help him see how misguided some of his actions are, even if he means well.

This is a story about farming, werewolves, palace intrigue, and all sorts of secrets. Explore the island of Litkalaa and see what the royals are like behind closed doors through the eyes of a simple farm boy. This book features themes of gay/male-on-male romance with elements of Kink and BDSM—or in other words, a very good time!

This was bad on so many levels. Blanket warning for spoilers.

The history lessons.
I prefer when I get to experience the world-building in a fluid way, where the lore gradually and easily builds into this intricate system but still understandable.
That did not happen here.
Instead, everything was explained through extremely long dialogues and these weird ‘history lessons’, and Peter continuously asking questions (but not the right ones).
With a cover like that, I did not come here expecting to feel like I’m back in school.

Miscommunication to the Max.
What they actually needed to talk about, they somehow never did. Max kept on forgetting crucial information, that a newb to the werewolf world should probably be informed of. Peter knew absolutely jackshit about what being a consort means, ‘cause how was he supposed to know, and all anyone kept talking about was the damn history of the royals.
It seemed the author kept using the same device to progress the storyline, and it just got annoying after the third “I’m sorry, I never told you this thing..” and ”Oh, you don’t know??”

Werewolf…where?
All the typical things I love about werewolf romances — growling, possessiveness, biting — were barely present. Max didn’t quite feel like a werewolf. Sure, he shifts a couple of times, and he bites Peter once or twice. But he didn’t give off the right energy. There was no mate bond, no scenting. Max didn’t have the typical wolfy personality, which just made him even more boring and 2D.

Prince and Consort…and wife?
Among the sea of information being thrown in my face, I understood that the royals are supposed to marry and they might also take on a male consort. They don’t explain (or it got lost in translation) why, though. Like, why would they have to also have a wife? I get that the king married for political reasons, kept a consort because he was in love with the dude before marrying, but why is it implied that Max will also take a wife in the future?
This whole aspect of the lore left me extremely confused about the dynamics. Not that I cared enough to comprehend it all.

The love story.
It was completely unfeeling. I felt zero connection between these characters, zero emotion. Same goes for the smut. Their relationship felt mechanical. Like Max needed to find a consort, saw Peter and said ‘he’ll do’.
This quote, from after their first time, explains it perfectly.

“Wow.” Max sounds breathless as he lays on his back. “Great job.” “Not as good as you did.”

GREAT JOB? You just had sex for the first time with the man you supposedly love, and you say ‘great job?’ Oh yeah, I feel the love.
I got my hopes up there would be a primal play scene at one point, but was severely disappointed on that front, too. Sigh, so much potential.

Plus, there was this whole part about a magical disc that cleans your insides, and I don’t think that needed to exist. I love realistic sex scenes, and whatnot, but I don’t expect you to tell me how you clean your stuff in a magical werewolf world. Let there be a little mystery.
There was also this whole thing about collars by the end, but I didn’t care anymore so don’t know what that was all about. Pretty sure it was supposed to give off the idea of a D/s dynamic, with some good boy’s and Sir’s thrown in there for extra spice. As I stated before, Max didn’t have the right personality for this sort of dynamic, so it just came off as fake and just..not hot. There was no power exchange, no real knowledge of how to represent BDSM.

The drama.
I had already given up by the time we reached the third act drama, so I didn’t retain much of it. From what I understood, it was unnecessary, and unnecessarily long. So damn boring.

The writing.
Again, I have the perfect quote for this. The writing felt very choppy, repetitive and simplistic. It didn’t get me enthralled in the story, it wasn’t captivating and emotional enough to help me look past the other flaws.

“He says that none of my letters back home have passed through his office, and I’m pretty sure Kamo was the one in charge of collecting them.” “Shit.” Max’s eyes go wide. “Maybe that’s why you haven’t heard back from anyone.”

Like, no shit that’s why he hasn’t heard back.
There were entire chapters dedicated to Peter being groomed and shaved and getting dressed, to him being shown around the castle and told about every single thing in extensive detail, to them talking about what they were about to do instead of just showing it. Too many superfluous details that added absolutely nothing to the story itself.

If you’re still reading, thanks for listening to me rant.
I didn’t find one single thing of this entire book enjoyable, as one could tell by my bitching.
The beginning was quite promising, but after two chapters it all went downhill and I don’t know why I didn’t quit at 30%. I could’ve saved myself the bad time.

Going into this I didn't know what to expect because I haven't read anything from this author. I will have to look into some of their other books because I enjoyed the start of this series. Now, there were a few things that irked me but I'll explain that later. This is the first book of a series that will apparently have a continuing storyline, so here we get world building, history lessons, and watching the couple get to know each other.

The blurb does a good job of the story overview. Peter is an only child who works on the family farm, even dropped out of school early to help his aging parents. He is also the only gay man in the little town so he has been lonely watching the other kids be in relationships. When he was younger he fantasied about the Prince coming into town and picking him to be his consort. Little did he know that this would actually happen! Peter is 19 and has been sheltered a lot, so he will sound kind of childish throughout the book. If this bothers you then don't read it because most of the chapters are from Peter's POV, with a few of Max's at key moments that were definitely needed. He's instantly attracted to Max once he lays eyes on him for the first time but he is shy and inexperienced so the couple spends time getting to know each other before they're intimate. Silly Max makes several mistakes because he was acting without thinking, although he meant well it just always made situations worse than they needed to be. Max's pack are all cursed to be werewolves, which is passed down to their children, and their bodies force the shift on full moons, though they can shift whenever they want any other time. The couple has some miscues but they're always handled quickly and they develop a strong bond overtime.

Now, my main peeve with this story, besides me forgetting it's a series and getting pissed for no reason, are the royal relationships in this book. The way the culture is setup is intriguing but I will admit the royal throuple situation is not for me. The King of course has to have a Queen/wife to bear an heir for the line to continue, but they also have a consort, which can be male or female. It works out for Max's parents because the King is bi and all three parties get along, but Max is 100% gay and not interested in women. With the new revelations about Peter and his heritage I'm hoping the author takes the Queen part out of the couples story or I will be supremely pissed if one is introduced later on for Max, just saying. The couples dynamic is too strong and the woman would just be used as a womb (not cool and yuck), and I just think it would take away from the love in the story. If the author adds the woman for tradition, I will probably chuck that book at something solid! JUST NOOOOOOO!!

This book has palace intrigue, balls, public ceremonies, unintentional humiliation, traitors to the crown, rituals, and lots of love. I'm glad this is a series because I was irked when this just up and ended. We just got huge information about Peter's heritage and the couple is planning an adventure off the island to get more answers, so yeah I want those answers! The book also has BDSM undertones, I would say it’s BDSM light with nods to it but not overbearing or in your face.

I’m a huge fan of Asher’s work. I’ve been reading his Steel & Thunder series for so long now that I’d even say he’s become one of my few auto read authors. However, there are key elements that happen to be overdone in this book. The miscommunication between Peter and Max happened time and time again to the point where it was a theme to be expected. Whenever things were going well, we would find a minor conflict directly constituted by miscommunication that didn’t end up making sense since the characters spent the entire day/night prior together talking and getting to know one another.

There is also a fair amount of political build up that falls on deaf ears in the grand scheme of the plot. However, everything does tie up nicely in the end.

The chemistry is good between the characters, which almost makes the miscommunication even more detrimental to the reading experience with this one. The spice is grade A is true Asher fashion and he builds his characters well.

Overall I’d recommend this to someone that’s more of a beginner into spicy MM and isn’t looking for something to take super seriously.

Peter lives in a small town called Weston. He is a farmer, and never expected anything more from life than to someday take over his parents small farm. But all that changes the day that Prince Makseka Blackclaw happens to travel through the small town and the two of them meet. The prince, a werewolf, is instantly attracted to the young man, and wants him to become his royal consort and wear his collar.

I received a review copy of this book, and to begin, there are a few things that any potential reader needs to be aware of. The members of the royal family are all Werewolves, and while the king is married to a queen, he also has a royal consort (who can be either male or female.) This consort wears the king’s collar and is bound to him in a way that is the equivalent of a marriage. Also, this is not a book meant for younger readers. This book is a M/M romance and does contain some graphic sex scenes as well as some BDSM themes. It is an adult book, and as such, you will be asked to confirm that you are 18+ before you can access it on the publisher's website.

That being said, the story involving the prince and his desired consort, is a very sweet tale of romance between the two. And as with any tale of romance, misunderstandings and complications always arise. But then, life is never easy, is it? And when werewolves are involved, you can usually expect there will be even more issues that must be dealt with.

All in all, while this might not really be my cup of tea, (erotica usually isn't), I did enjoy this story. The developing romance between the two main characters as they overcome a number of misunderstandings and get to truly know and understand each other is heartfelt and honest. And if you are looking for a sweet M/M romance that comes with a unique set of complications (and a few surprises along the way), then I believe that you will enjoy this book.

It was OK...eish? I think? It has a fantasy setting, werewolves, love at first sight, intrigue and machinations, mysterious villain. But it all came in the end to interaction of the MCs -Peter and Max and loooong and daunting passages with nothing more then talking and talking and talking. I felt like I was again in school during history lesson. I literally zoned out for several occassions. It would be better, if history and all the intricacies of palace life and dynamics were introduced as part of the plot for the reader to digest it gradually. As for Peter and Max, there was an effort to go into the direction of love at first sight, you are mine, innocent love interest, but it all just went sideways and didn't click right. Max's interaction with Peter was most of the time awkward at best and embarassing at worst. Reason? Communication. Or lack of it. Like seriously guys, you just met, fallen in love (potentially as that is still for discussion)- that means you need to work on your relationship! But nope. Even with the edition of mysterious villain, it just didn't save the story. What even agravated me further, was the suggestion that Max will take a wife?! Like the king did-had consort for love and wife for heir. And you want to tell me this is ok either to the wife, that will be there just to give birth and then what? Find herself a lover? What about Peter? How he should take it and feel about? Hopefully the story will go the other way and either Max will declare his unconditional love for Peter and not taking wife or with Peter's inheritance to somehow magically get an heir? Honestly, this book has just more than few tropes, that just ticks me off, so that is probably reason I'm rating this more strictly, but if you are ok with it go for this book and enjoy it.

Peter Lambert, a young, gay man living on a farm in a small, boring town - Weston in the country of Litkalaa. Imagine Peter’s surprise when the Crown Prince - Prince Makseka Blackclaw (Max as he likes to be called) engages Peter in conversation at his family’s stand at the market. Later the Prince shows up to Peter’s house and inquires if Peter would like to be his consort and come and live in the castle. Peter’s life is about to change.

The two main characters have a lot of chemistry and are perfectly suited for one another. Peter, a virgin and Prince Makseka, a little more experienced find a way to work together to form an incredible bond that leads to the collaring of Peter to the Prince. Both characters are lovable (with Peter being a little naive and Max being a little slow in the romance department). I loved how they both started growing into mature young men. Other characters - King Samoset and Queen Anna; Consort Alden; Kamo; Oliver; Daniel; Hannah; and Violet all contribute to the story in a positive way. There were some characters I didn’t like but that was because they were written bad in a good way. So enjoyable getting to know all of them.

The story is written in a way that it flows seamlessly from beginning to end. There are several twists and turns that keep you fixed on the story to see what happens next. The atmosphere and setting of the story are wonderful. Full of support and understanding with just a smidge of bad attitudes when usually it is the other way around.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good romance - gay or otherwise.

I received this book as ARC and this is my honest review.

Okay I'm going to start with the fact that the main character's name is Peter. What an awesome idea. The correlation and similarity between the folk story 'Peter and the Wolf' and this story make me giggle and laugh with the authors sense of humor. Get it Peter catching the wolf. Then Makseka going by Max which is common name among canine. Just the cherry on top.

At first I was sort of surprised by the sexual interactions towards the middle and end of the book, cuz it felt like it came out of nowhere. It felt different then their previous encounters. But the more I thought about the story, the more I realized the author is very good at foreshadowing. There is a lot of little hints everywhere that really pulled a story together. Everything intertwines very well. There's no scene where your left scratching your head in confusion.

I feel like the characters were done well too; it wasn't obvious who the antagonist was going to be but the story progressed in such a way that it gave you an impression of who it could possibly be. It was refreshing how there was character development among more than just the the main characters. The consort, the advisor and even some of the guards, were some of the characters that had enough history and background that weren't just used as fillers or shallow tools to progress the story.

I would definitely call this a slow burn 'Slice of Life' kind of story with spice. Cause I will tell you those spicy scenes are spicy. This definitely is a feel good page turner. Heres hoping there is more to come with this couple or even characters in this universe. Five stars.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book when I wasn’t reading it.

Sure, it’s predictable and lacks in world building, but it’s not like I was reading this for the fantasy elements. I came for gay, dom, horny werewolves, and I got gay, dom, horny werewolves. There was a good balance between smut and plot, so I wasn’t ever missing one or the other. This is the first book in the series so there will surely be more world building (and smut) to come.

There were times when I wanted more romance and personality from Max, but honestly the other characters make up for it. Peter is a great protagonist, easing readers into the royal lifestyle that is a new adventure for the both of us. The supporting characters are also surprisingly endearing like the King, Queen, the Consort, and the palace staff. I totally vibed with the poly relationship, probably because Consort Alden is super hot with his wise and gentle demeanour.

The writing is simple and straightforward, almost like a stream of consciousness from Peter, so it’s really easy to fly through this book. It feels like I’m on the journey myself. That’s really what made me connect with Peter. It was so easy to imagine myself in Peter’s shoes, and who hasn’t had the fantasy of being swept away to a castle by an attractive suitor?

This was a fun ride that I would take again!.

I will do my best to keep this spoiler free. This is my first time reviewing a book, and the first book I chose on Booksprout! I want to start off by saying it was nothing like what I expected. If you’re looking for angst, or toxic couples, this is not it. Nearly every relationship within this book is wholesome and healthy. There is an emphasis on communication and understanding throughout the book. Any bad behavior is thoroughly cut down by other characters. The two leads have one of the most loving relationships I’ve read in awhile.

There are a several NSFW scenes, that are pretty explicit, and I enjoyed reading them! It didn’t have much in the way of BDSM, despite the tagging for this book. Outside the fact that the consorts are like pets, and get collared. They definitely feel more focused on the physicality of lovemaking, than the emotional-side of it, but I don’t mind that!

Speaking of the collaring, I got a chuckle over the fact the consorts are human, and become essentially owned by werewolves. I couldn’t help picturing the fact that dogs were collaring people. How the turns have tabled, I s’pose!

Last but not least, the book wraps up without an ending. I kind of wish there had been an ending. Maybe there will be a second book, but I couldn’t find it as of now. There were a lot of questions left unanswered, but that’s ok. It was nice to see Peter and Max grow as a couple.

A different take on a fairytale romance. Peter, a farmer's son, who left school at 16 to help his parents take care of their farm in a small village, who has never left the village and assumes he'll spend the rest of his life on the farm, meets the crown prince of Litkalaa, is whisked off to the capital city to live in the palace and become the prince's consort. Peter initially agrees as it means his parents will be given a generous stipend and feels out of his depth very quickly.

Prince Makseka (Max) feels the draw to Peter the first time he sees him and wants Peter as his consort. Max comes across as naive but very caring. Although a lot of Peter's stumbling blocks could have been prevented by Max talking to him more, they are also a way for Peter to connect with others around him and get to know those who are on his side better.

I was drawn into the mystery of who was trying to stop Peter from officially becoming Max's consort. There is a bit of danger, mystery and an underlying faction trying to bring back 'the good old days' in between the wooing that really drew me in. I enjoyed this story and would like to read more about this world.

Having read some of Ashen's previous works, I went into The Crown and the Collar with some expectations.
Ashen does not disappoint.
However, The Crown and the Collar is a touch different, which is deliciously wonderful.

The story has some of the usual trappings (tropes) of the MM Romance world, but Ashen takes them and turns them on their head. Delightful twists on tired old tropes.

In Crown and Collar, we see the Royal Prince love affair trope turned sideways with the use of polyamory, and just the faintest hint of D/s with the claiming of a consort, and the collaring of the chosen. It's brilliantly done, with some more than steamy scenes.

Not only do you get a delicious romance tale, but we also get a bit of suspense and mystery, as all things are not as they seem within the castle walls.

Dominic Ashen brings Dungeons and Dragons to life. All of his works inspire grand scenes of fantasy that reminded me of many evenings around a card table being left to the demise of a dungeon master. Ashen is that master - yet the end result is a satisfied party of adventurers.

Go pick yourself up some werewolf fun.

This book was a delightful mix of fantasy, romance, and intrigue, with an engaging storyline that kept me hooked from start to finish. Peter, the humble farm boy, and Prince Makseka Blackclaw have a dynamic that’s both charming and full of tension. Peter’s innocence and grounded personality contrast beautifully with Makseka’s arrogant yet well-meaning royal demeanor, creating a compelling push-and-pull between them.

The setting of Litkalaa is richly described, blending the simplicity of rural life with the grandeur of royal intrigue. The addition of werewolves and the subtle exploration of BDSM themes added a unique flavor to the story, though it’s tastefully done and never feels gratuitous.

While the romance is the heart of the story, the plot offers plenty of secrets, drama, and character growth, especially as Makseka learns the value of empathy and genuine connection.

A highly enjoyable read for fans of MM fantasy romances with a touch of spice and a lot of heart. I’m excited to see where this series goes next!.

It took me forever to get through this book; it was one of the most boring books I've read in the past couple of years, I hated the way everyone talked to each other, it was so bland, there was constant miscommunication with the two main characters who are supposed to be getting "married" essentially in a short amount of time and the Prince who the MMC was marrying was constantly "forgetting" to tell him how the arrangement would work and how it worked with the Prince being a werewolf. Any sort of world building was told and not shown, honestly that's how the whole book worked, we were told everything and not just shown it. I am rather disappointed considering I had read other books by this author and was excited to read this.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5.

I had so much fun reading about Peter and Max . I didn’t want the story to end and look forward to the rest of the series.

I fell in love with Peter right from the beginning. He is so adorable and it is apparent how much he loves his family and the farm that he grew up on. I probably connect with him so much because I grew up on a farm myself and talked to all the animals just like he did (although never about a prince)!

The surprising adventures that the prince and the royals bring into Peter’s life brings out a roller coaster of emotions.

I was pleasantly surprised by Peter in this story. He was not a young helpless boy. He was young, but he was physically strong from tending his parents farm and very grown up when it came to their business. He was adorably naive about the world outside of said farm. He is shy when it comes to anything romantic, and I love a larger person blushing and stammering. Max our Prince had good intentions but at first, he did not get things right either for the two of them. They have to face some issues at the Castle, and this is a slow burn. But when you get there are some beautiful steamy first times for our virgin Peter. You really get to know Peter and Max and watch them grow up and learn together.

There’s a lot to like here: a slow burn, a prince, a farm boy, some interesting world building, some intrigue, some spice, and some memorable characters. Oh, and werewolves. How can you ask for anything more? I’m definitely invested in where this series is going. My one quibble, and it’s a relatively minor one, is that Peter is…very sheltered. To the point that he doesn’t always seem as mature as you’d hope a 19 year old would be, and that can be charming at times and a tad grating at others. Here’s hoping that wears off a bit as his adventures progress, but overall, this book feels like a strong start to what promises to be an enjoyable series.

Possessive Golden Retriever Vibes Galore

I loved this book so much more and I expected to. From beginning to end it's full of laughs, suspense, giggles, and plenty of heat. Makseka stumbles upon Peter while passing through his town and immediately decides he wants and will have him as his consort. He purchases everything from the family's stand and then comes to their home to "request" Peter come with him to the castle. Peter is understandably hesitant, but after some thinking decides to take a chance. There was a lot more plot than I expected intertwined with the romance and our characters get their hea. I am eagerly awaiting future releases for the series.

Peter and Max are two very different men but in some ways both are naive. Peter's is in a good way. He is a good guy, lives on the farm, loves his family and responsible. And Max, spoiled prince who is used to getting his way and not always considering how his behavior affects others. When these two get together there is a lot of growing to be done, in different ways, for each of them. That is what makes the story interesting, at times frustrating, thanks to Max and in the end satisfying as they figure some things out. This was a nice way in to what seems like it will be a good series to read.

*I got this book for free, but this is my own opinion.*
This was okay. It was certainly entertaining. The only thing thing that took away from the entertainment was the lack of suspense. For example, it was clear that there were numeral conflicts, but all of them were easily solved. The other thing that confused me was the worldbuilding. I kept asking "why?". Why do they have consorts and their partner? Do they different roles?
In general, I liked the characters and how they act around each other. The main character was clearly sheltered and the author makes us aware of it.
If you like paranormal insta-love, this book is for you.

This book by Dominic N. Ashen is an excellent take on a Cinderella story where farm boy Peter is whisked away to live in a palace by Prince Makseka. Definitely a tale of two very different people who have to both compromise and change how they act in order to become what the other person needs. I really liked that Ashen didn’t write these two as the caricatures that they could easily have been. Especially making sure that just because Peter was naive and “uncultured” that he never came across as stupid. I can’t wait to find out where Ashen takes this series.

Dominic N. Ashen is fantastic in his fantasy world-building. I loved the characters, their growth during the story, the heat and plot twists. It's lovely to see how Max (Prince Makseka) and Peter fall in love. Even if at the beginning things start fast, it is a slow burn till around 50% I would say. It got a bit boring, slow after Peter moved in the castle. But it's so worth continuing. It only gets better. The side-character are lovely, and the banter was great. It plays in the same universe as Storm and Thunder. I can't wait for the next book. Maybe they'll come across an Orc ranger and his warrior partner?

This book is the first of what I assume will be a series. It has a lot of world building and even a map to assist the reader as they dive into a new universe.

The royal family is made of shifters and each has the ability to take a "consort." This particular tale is about the prince and an unsuspecting, selfless farm boy.

Personally, having to take in all the details provided to set the scene and paint a picture was a little daunting. I would recommend this book...with a heavy warning that it could cause a book hangover.

I loved The Crown and the Collar by Dominic N. Ashen. It's the first book in the Kingdom of Claws series. I loved Peter and Max's story. I loved the plot and didn't guess right about who the villain was. I thought it was the red herring. I loved the chemistry between Peter and Max. I loved that Peter's shifted form is bigger than anything Max has seen. I can't wait to learn more about his lineage, what happens when he finds his uncle, and if he stays a consort now that he is a full werewolf.

This is a MM paranormal book. The two main characters are Prince Makseka, a werewolf, and Peter, a virgin farm boy. It is a curious mix of quaint medieval like village life, and classic werewolf mythology. The author did a good job with the world building for this book.
The characters are well developed, with distinctive personalities. The plotline includes a slow burn romance, with very light BDSM, some erotica, palace intrigue and a surprise reveal. It has a few editing mistakes, and the author enjoys using italics for emphasis.

I've previously read another book by this author and loved it! This one was also good and well written but it's hard to beat the previous book (Steel and Thunder). Still, I do recommend this book due to the excellent characters whom the author has managed to write brilliantly. Fantasy and Romance. There is a "story" as well which some might like, but I know others just want the romance part. (I think the story was good.).

You have Peter and Max, Peter is just farmer and Max is a Prince. Max engages Peter in conversation's at his family's stand at market which in turn changes Peter's life because Max comes to ask him about being his consort and coming to live in the castle with him. You can tell they have a good chemistry together and throw out the book both characters really grow. Plenty of intrigue and some kink, plus werewolves. You can't go wrong

4.5 stars. I love Dom's books! You get a 'monster', a great story, and definitely smut! What more could this sm'hore ask for? Nothing except the next book, please??? So... I did have to wait before I got my first hit of smut but it was definitely worth it!
Inside: a virgin MC and his ab-fab prince mate, magic, a castle full of characters, court intrigue, and werewolves!.
