What happens when a writer's voice becomes too intrusive?

After Michael Brooks loses his wife at Christmas, grief strikes in unsettling ways.
Fearing for his sanity, he consults a counsellor who advises a change of scene to journal his recovery.

Many miles to the north in border country, The Old Mill at Shillmoor Barton nestles in a narrow valley amidst the windswept Northumberland landscape.
Deceptively peaceful - a dark and violent history, restless spirits and the sadistic presence of a deceased sexual predator all latch onto Michael's out of control energy.

As horrific, paranormal encounters impact lives around him, Michael discovers a disturbing supernatural power behind the emotive written word.

Devon De’Ath was born in the county of Kent, ‘The Garden of England.’ Raised a Roman Catholic in a small, ancient country market community famously documented as ‘the most haunted TOWN in England,’ he grew up in an atmosphere replete with spiritual, psychic, and supernatural energy. Hauntings were commonplace and you couldn’t swing a cat without hitting three spectres, to the extent that he never needed question the validity of such manifestations. As to the explanations behind them?

At the age of twenty, his earnest search for spiritual truth led the young man to leave Catholicism and become heavily involved in Charismatic Evangelicalism. After serving as a part-time youth pastor while working in the corporate world, he eventually took voluntary redundancy to study at a Bible College in the USA. Missions in the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa followed, but a growing dissatisfaction with aspects of the theology and ministerial abuse by church leadership eventually caused him to break with organised religion and pursue a Post-Evangelical existence. One open to all manner of spiritual and human experiences his ‘holy’ life would never have allowed.

After church life, De’Ath served fifteen years with the police, lectured at colleges and universities, and acted as a consultant to public safety agencies both foreign and domestic.

A writer since he first learned the alphabet, Devon De’Ath has authored works in many genres under various names, from Children’s literature to self-help books, through screenplays for video production and all manner of articles.

If you are lucky enough to read other books by this author, like me, you will know that this science fiction genre with some horror and suspense is what Devon De'Ath does best, perhaps his origins have to do with it. He was born in a small rural town, famous for being called "the most haunted city in England".
Scribe tells the story of Michel who recently lost his wife at Christmas. He has had a horrible Christmas. He feels lost and overwhelmed. His mind is not working clearly and he is absorbed in his thoughts. Strange situations begin to happen around him and he feels like he's losing his mind. A counselor suggests taking a trip to relax. He decides to go to Shillmoor Barton, a very remote place. Far from relaxing, Michel runs into some unexpected company. Will he really be losing his mind or do evil forces want to disturb him?
This particular book is one of my favorites. It is a creepy book that will keep you very attentive while you read its pages. Devon has a fresh and quite natural style to narrate. The reading is pleasant, attractive and does not bore, despite being quite long. It is noted that the cover has been specially chosen; it is an abstract drawing, but it gives us a notion of what the interior holds for us.
I cannot be objective in recommending this book because I really love Devon De`Ath's books. This is a highly recommended book if you love mystery with a horror twist.

Scribe: by Devon De’ath

After losing his wife, and strange, unexplained experiences begin to happen in his home, Michael Brooks takes a trip to try to escape his grief. He rents a remote countryside house (converted mill) for six months to mourn, relax, and remember his wife by writing his memoirs in a journal.

Unfortunately for him, he gets more than he bargained for. The ghosts of several children begin to haunt him, and a dark presence that controls them all keeps them close, stopping them from going into the light. On top of all that, there is a literal ghostwriter who catalogues a list of sordid, evil deeds, both past and present, until Michael begins to wonder if he is losing his mind.

When old friends and new acquaintances begin to die around Michael, under weird circumstances, he realises that he needs to solve this age-old mystery once and for all.

The story builds when he invites Karen, an old school friend, to stay at the mill. Together they need to realise that the pen is mightier than the sword – or mightier than the Scribe - if they ever want to defeat the evil malice in the mill and save the ghostly spirits of the young children.

Absorbing book with a great story to tell.

As the saying goes, “do not judge a book by its cover”, but the first thing that attracted me was how original it was, so I read it; I really liked it. “Scribe” was written by Devon De´Ath and I dare say that it is a captivating reading.
The plot revolves around Michael Brooks who suffers the loss of his wife at Christmas. Limit situations affect every human being’ life, especially the loss of a close person that is a certainty. This poignant situation makes him feel miserable and even he fears for his own mental and personal health. So, he decides to look for help to go on with his life.
It is a well-organized and well-developed book. The writing style is great! I found that the reading smooths slowly. I was very absorbed by the story. I am giving this novel 5 stars out of 5 because it deserves it! It is a must-read!

Scribe is a science fiction book written by Devon De'Ath who was born in Kent. He grew up in a spiritual, psychic and supernatural environment so he turned his life experiences into this absorbing and captivating story. It is written for a general audience but I believe that it is really interesting for adults.
Part fantasy, part drama and part love story, this piece of work can easily make you lost in its pages. The attention to detail was so in depth that at times I felt like I was inside the story. It is about a man called Michael Brooks who loses his wife; fearing to lose sanity he moves to a border country. Some months later a violent event hits him destabilizing his life.
Devon is a fantastic writer and creates a novel that flows really well. His ideas are very innovative. The action is solid and suspenseful, that´s why I couldn’t stop reading it.
I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this kind of reading. It will fulfil the reader’s expectations.
