The year is 1939, and Europe once again stands on the brink of war. In the English village of Cobblefield, tensions run high as everyone waits to see whether disaster can be averted.Caroline Demeter has been running the local pub for many years now. Haunted by memories of her tragic past, Caroline struggles to hold onto her sanity, while trying to deal with the potential collapse of her remaining family. Every scrap of logic tells her that the danger should be over, that the past is firmly locked away, yet in the dead of night she still fears that vengeance is comingCaroline has always sworn that she will never, ever set foot in Hadlow House again. Now that she's being lured into the forest, however, she starts to wonder whether she might have misunderstood her destiny all along. Having been hiding for so many years, she finally comes to understand that in fact she might be the only person who can stop the house's evil forever.1939 is the tenth book in the Haunting of Hadlow House series, which tells the story of one haunted house over the centuries from its construction to the present day. All the lives, all the souls, all the tragedies... and all the ghosts. Readers are advised to start with the first book in the series.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
At the end of the previous book I was beginning to think that the series was running out of steam but, once again, Amy Cross has regained her mojo. The poor Demeter family continue to be cursed by the evil legacy of Hadlow House and the ghost of Fanny Baxter has found a new way to torment the living. A once wealthy family, brought low by tragedy and the misfortune to own one of the most haunted houses in England, remains in thrall to the past. I cannot imagine how the series will end but I will be there at its conclusion.
A (hopefully) fitting end to the Demeters family arc - I’m definitely ready to move on from them now.
I liked the Easter eggs in Crowford (many of which I’ve noted to come back to when I read that series) and the grounding in the reality of the war breaking out. I was really sad about Wally and imagine the same might befall Harry.
Interested to see what’s next for the house moving into the 60s.
Read in a day. F’ing Fanny why can’t you just stay dead? This book finally picked up the pace again. The editing is in DESPERATE need of help. Closing in on the finish line for this 13 book series..
I've reviewed several books in this series. The story Is absolutely wonderful and that is the only reason I am tolerating the horrendous editing done with this book series. This book was one of the worst edited. But in the end it still a great story.
With the death of her husband, and after selling the pub, Caroline and Ginny were now living with Wally's family in Crowford. Lilly was still comatose in hospital - until she wasn't. Caroline returned to Hadlow House in the hope of forcing Fanny to relinquish Lily's body. Will she be successful or will Fanny win the day? World War II is upon them. How many will return and who will perish?
Lisa has been in a coma for twenty one years. What does Fanny have planned for this young lady? And how is Caroline going to try to help her? This part of the series was very intense.
I have read all 10 books so far. This series holds your attention in each book. I came across so many mistakes, which is annoying. I considered stopping reading of the books, but the stories are really good in each book!
Well, it looks like Fanny has won temporarily. She now has a body, but Lily's body isn't exactly working right since her accident. Caroline is now haunting Fanny in the house for now. It will be interesting to see what happens when Lily's dies of old age. How will Fanny go on without a body?
I really enjoy reading books by Amy cross, they are easy to read and you get drawn into the story, this is such an amazing series, about a single house that has dark secrets and the more you read the more you learn about the house
