Ambedkar said casteism is a graded inequality. Here Jeyamohan uses the madras famine during British rule as a back drop and brings the atrocities against the lower castes by saying how the caste hierarchy works tirelessly to crush the depressed classes and thrives by helping the British government to exploit the the human resources. That is actually a fault line on the natural species just like albino elephant which never changes state and unmovable but helps it's masters to oppress the masses. Like an elephant it cannot be completely subdued by its master and when pushed can turn against it's master.

Those who synergied despite the differences, ruled. And those who remained in disjunction were being ruled.

Not a typical historical fiction. It discusses the politics, economics and the social factors which created great famines during 1870s in the British occupied India.

Really liked the well etched and strong characters of Aiden and Kaathavarayan. I didn't like the philosophical exploration of life with PB Shelly's poems though, I found them very lengthy and tedious. But the other arguments made by Jeyamohan about caste, equality and religion is very strong and compelling. I will never be able to look at Madras the same way before.

Overall a very good read. This is my first novel of Jeyamohan and has not disappointed me at all.

Just stand up for people...
Atleast be there for people...

(Pagan god for destruction and bloodshed)

I am hitting myself, as why I have not touched Jeyamohan's work for this long. Of Course part to do with current Tamil lit esp the political ones, as its filled with hatred on for another, and am not ready to get muddy with it, which perhaps starts from Marimalai Adigal. This author is out of ordinary.

Ok, coming to the book, not the regular historical fiction, where the beauty of the lady is described for pages,or sexul intercourse put in vividly. Very strong narration, very strong characters. He takes a part of history and gets into dam good detailing. It deals with Madras Famine, and characters around it, which took part of it. First protest of Dalit's as a union, and there are many first which are being handled. Philosophy part of the author can get bit tedious, and you can easily skip it, if you want. On a whole, nicely written piece of history, which is easily brushed aside.

Have you ever wondered, why does the Mass by Tamil churches, borrows so heavily on Sanskrit rather than on proper Tamil, and sometimes it has left me wondered, as to weather I have attended a Tamil one. For starters, words like : Prasangam, Devan, Jabam, Thuthi, Viswasam, Sharanam, gyanam, veda ( which is comfortably used to denote bible). I never believed it when my sister said it, that most of the words are from Vaishnavism, but now I have got leads to it from this book. Untouchability, entry inside the temple, St. Ramanuja, Srivaishnavam, partonsier of Vaishnavam esp Naidus or Nayaks and the conversion to Christianity and still now, stigma of dalit Christian( caste tagged along, even after they have left the religion due to one) and them becoming a pastor in any other churches, has some shades of grey, I suppose, which am yet to uncover.

For me, this book is a new leash of light to some of the unexplored parts of history, which are easily painted black and white, and my search starts there in.

History is often remembered through dates, rulers and wars. "White Elephant" chooses to remember it through bodies, hungry bodies, exhausted bodies, beaten bodies, and ultimately, dead bodies.

Set in Madraspatnam in 1878, during the devastating Great Famine, the book follows Aiden Byrne, an Irish police officer whose faith in the British imperial order begins to fracture after he witnesses the brutal treatment of two labourers at the Tudor Ice Company. What begins as an encounter with violence gradually becomes an investigation into something far larger, the machinery of empire, caste, labour exploitation and the uncomfortable limits of individual morality.

The Tudor Ice Company is perhaps the book's most striking metaphor. Blocks of ice travelling from frozen New England lakes to colonial India sound almost absurdly luxurious against a landscape ravaged by famine. Yet behind that strange colonial extravagance are workers from the lowest rungs of the caste hierarchy, subjected to appalling conditions. The contrast is devastating. Privilege is shown not as something abstract, but as something physically sustained by invisible labour.

This is where the book finds much of its power. It refuses to present colonialism merely as a political system. It examines it as a human relationship, one in which comfort for some depends upon suffering for others. Aiden is particularly interesting because he is neither a conventional hero nor a simple representative of the colonial establishment. His loyalty to the Crown places him inside the very structure he increasingly finds morally indefensible. His growing association with Kathavarayan, a charismatic young activist, becomes a confrontation not only with injustice but with his own complicity. The book's most uncomfortable question emerges here, what happens when conscience awakens inside a person who has already become part of the machinery he is questioning?

The famine deepens that moral unease. Rather than functioning merely as historical scenery, it becomes a force that exposes the inequalities beneath colonial society. Hunger strips away political rhetoric and leaves behind the starkest measure of power, who gets to survive, who gets to eat, and whose suffering is considered acceptable.

The book's treatment of caste and labour is equally significant. It recognises that oppression does not operate through a single hierarchy. Colonial power intersects with existing social structures, creating layers of exploitation that make resistance extraordinarily difficult. The murdered labourers therefore represent more than victims of an individual crime; their deaths become evidence of a system in which certain lives have been made easier to disregard.

Yet the book is not without its limitations. At times, the historical and political weight of the narrative threatens to overshadow its intimate human dimension. Some ideas are articulated with such deliberate force that the reader is given less room to discover them independently. The book's ambition is impressive, but occasionally its thematic density comes at the expense of subtlety and emotional breathing space.

Still, its greatest achievement lies in refusing easy moral comfort. It does not simply ask whether empire was cruel; it asks how ordinary individuals survive, participate in, resist and rationalise systems of cruelty. That is a much more disturbing question and consequently, a much more interesting one.

The book ultimately becomes more than a historical mystery or a story of rebellion. It is an examination of complicity, conscience and the fragile possibility of resistance. Its imagined labour uprising gives the narrative an additional charge, history becomes not merely something that happened to people, but something people attempted to change, often at enormous personal cost.

✍️ Strengths :

🔸Vivid reconstruction of famine-era Madras and colonial working conditions.
🔸Powerful intersection of empire, caste and labour exploitation.
🔸A morally complicated protagonist rather than a conventional heroic figure.
🔸The Tudor Ice Company provides a memorable and deeply ironic symbol of colonial privilege.
🔸Strong emotional and philosophical questions about complicity and human agency.

✒️ Areas for Improvement :

▪️Certain political and thematic ideas can feel overly explicit.
▪️The book's historical ambition occasionally overwhelms its quieter character moments.
▪️Some emotional developments could have benefited from greater subtlety and space.

In conclusion, the most haunting thing about the book is not its violence. It is the normalisation of that violence, the way suffering can become part of an institution's everyday functioning until people stop seeing it as extraordinary. By placing Aiden between loyalty and conscience, and Kathavarayan between oppression and resistance, the book turns colonial history into a deeply personal moral question. It leaves behind an uncomfortable thought, systems of power do not survive only because powerful people create them. They survive because ordinary people learn how to live inside them and sometimes, the first act of resistance is simply refusing to look away.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux for a digital ARC of Jeyamohan's White Elephant translated by Priyamvada Ramkumar.

While I have read a handful of Indian writers, I believe this is probably the first I have read by a Tamil author. Prior to reading White Elephant, I tried not to research too much regarding Bahuleyan Jeyamohan as I didn't want it to overly influence how I perceived his work.

White Elephant is described by the publisher as an inversion of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, which unfortunately does not tell me much as I haven't read Conrad's work, but I am aware that Conrad's novel serves to critique British imperial colonialism, which he himself witnessed. In that sense, I understand that Jeyamohan's novel might be interpreted as a post-colonial critique, but from the perspective of a man whose own country was subjugated, albeit a critique about 130 years' removed from the time in which the novel is set.

Jeyamohan's White Elephant provides us with a glimpse of the shocking devastation of the Great Famine of Madras, which occurred in the 1870s, through the eyes of an Irish police captain, Aiden Byrne, stationed in Madraspatnam, modern-day Chennai. The author employs vivid and evocative language to convey the sense of turmoil and utter helplessness that Aiden feels in the face of what he witnesses. Jeyamohan depicts the impact of the famine in an arrestingly frank manner, confronting us with the horrific death toll and the shocking reality of the situation.

Interestingly, Jeyamohan provides an Indian native counterpart to Aiden Byrne in the form of Kathavarayan, a Dalit or lower caste activist whose people are the primary victims of the famine that ravages Madras. Although Aiden is a symbol of the British machine, this is counterpointed by his empathy for the people who are subject to the atrocities he sees and the fact that he, being Irish, is in some ways not unlike Kathavarayan who has been educated but will never be accepted by the 'superior' classes of his race. It is also evident that Aiden suffers from the fact that having been educated and having joined the British military, he is also not entirely accepted by his family either.

The story is compelling and sometimes harrowing but any sentimentality is tempered by the philosophical debate that develops within Aiden's mind on themes of colonialism and identity, and the perceived 'benevolence' and also destruction meted out by so-called Western civilisations. Although the setting is historical, it is clear that the writer attempts to grant a voice to the downtrodden subaltern classes both within the historical context of the novel and perhaps within the India of today, as Jeyamohan seems to pull no punches in his equally critical observation of the Brahmin castes and their actions, or lack thereof, during British rule in India.

I did find the depiction of Aiden quite curious as he is ostensibly meant to be an Irish Protestant from Co. Kerry in the south-west of Ireland, but I find it highly implausible that a middling-class farming family in Kerry would have any nationalist leanings in this period as Protestant working- and middle-class families in Ireland at this time were predominantly unionist and very much supported the imperial cause. It is suggested at the beginning of the book that Aiden's father is somewhat dismayed or disappointed that his son was going to serve the British Empire so this contradictory combination of traits in Aiden was a little confusing for me at the beginning. Also, the name Aiden would certainly not have been a popular name at the time and especially not amongst Irish Protestant families.

That little point aside, I did enjoy the novel, as much as you can enjoy a novel about a devastating famine, for its exploration of post-colonial guilt and the sense of futility felt by some of those that tried to fight colonial supremacy. A very thought-provoking read.

White Elephant follows Aiden, an Irishman serving in the British military in India during the Great Indian Famine of 1878. As he rises through the ranks, the story traces his steady descent into alcoholism and madness as he’s forced to confront the sheer scale of human suffering around him.

One of the strongest elements of the novel is its exploration of power and hierarchy. Much of the book focuses on India’s caste system and the brutal injustices faced by those at the very bottom, but the author also weaves in other layers of oppression. Sitting at the top of this hierarchy are the British, and throughout the story we see how proximity to whiteness dictates status and survival. This is especially clear in the story of Marisa, Aiden’s Indian mistress. Within the story, Marissa shared how her mother, who had previously been seen as the lowest of the low in their community, gained respect after she gave birth to children fathered by British soldiers. We also see this dynamic in scenes of starving Indians pleading with Aiden and other white officers for help, believing them to be inherently good or just simply because of their skin color.

What makes this theme especially compelling is how it plays out within Aiden himself. To the Indians he rules over, Aiden is just another face among the British elite. But within that group, he is never fully accepted because of his Irish heritage. This sense of being perpetually “outside” follows him throughout the novel and complicates his role as both oppressor and victim. While the British openly criticize India’s caste system, the book makes it painfully clear that they’ve created one of their own—one that subjugates the Irish and others based on race, religion, and ethnicity.

Another recurring motif is the natural environment, particularly the relentless heat and vast landscape of the Indian interior. Much like Heart of Darkness (which the author cites as an influence), Aiden’s mental unraveling parallels his journey deeper into a famine-ravaged land. Some of the most haunting scenes occur as Aiden travels through the countryside, witnessing unimaginable suffering—starving people left to die and desperate mothers throwing the bodies of their children at his carriage. The longer he remains exposed to this reality, the harder it becomes to believe the British narrative that everything is under control.

By the final chapters, Aiden’s insanity is no longer subtle. The oppressive heat becomes a constant reminder of the suffering he can no longer ignore, culminating in a violent climax where famine, caste oppression, and colonial power collide.

Overall, White Elephant is a powerful and unsettling novel about a period of history that often goes overlooked, particularly in the United States. It’s a difficult read at times, but an incredibly rewarding one, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it remains one of my favorite books of 2026, despite the fact that I read it in January.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of the English translation of the story!

White Elephant is a powerful and deeply unsettling historical novel about empire, exploitation and the human cost of systems built on power.
Set in Madraspatnam in 1878, against the devastating backdrop of the Great Famine, the story follows Aiden Byrne, an Irish police officer serving the British Crown. His encounter with two labourers being brutally treated at the Tudor Ice Company becomes the beginning of a journey that forces him to confront a reality far removed from the world he thought he understood.
What stayed with me most was the portrayal of the workers at Tudor. The seemingly extraordinary journey of ice from frozen New England lakes to colonial India becomes a disturbing reminder of the enormous machinery required to sustain colonial privilege and of the people whose labour and suffering remained invisible within it.
I particularly appreciated the complexity of Aiden's character. His position within the British Raj puts him in an uncomfortable space where personal morality and institutional loyalty begin to collide. His growing relationship with Kathavarayan, a young activist, further challenges his understanding of the system he has been serving.
The famine forms an important and devastating backdrop to the narrative. Rather than treating it merely as a historical event, the novel brings the human consequences of deprivation, inequality and colonial policies into focus. The scale of the suffering is difficult to comprehend, but the individual stories make that history feel painfully immediate.
The book also explores caste and labour exploitation with considerable force. The violence faced by those at the lowest levels of the social hierarchy isn't presented as an isolated injustice but as part of a larger system that allows power to operate through both colonial rule and existing social structures.
What I found particularly compelling was the question of human agency. How much freedom does an individual really have when they are part of a machinery built around conquest, hierarchy and power? And what does it mean to recognise injustice when your own position is tied to the system creating it?
The idea of a possible early labour uprising gives the novel another layer, transforming a murder investigation into something much larger a story about resistance, solidarity and the possibility of ordinary people challenging structures designed to keep them powerless.
Vivid, atmospheric and emotionally demanding, White Elephant is not an easy historical read, but it is an important one. It brings together colonial history, caste, famine, labour, resistance and moral conflict into a sweeping story that stays with you.
A haunting reminder that behind every empire, every institution and every symbol of privilege are human lives and some histories refuse to remain buried.

Book #40 for the year

Recommended.

Each time I read a translated text, I just know that I am missing something that was lost in the translation, especially when I am so ignorant of the history and nuance of a place from whence the translated language hails. Nonetheless, Jeyamohan's unflinching, unapologetic and heartwrenching portrait of India's Great Famine of 1876-1878, exacerbated and made worse by British colonization and inspiring a labor uprising, is a generous and exquisite crash course on the abundant evils of colonialism.

Whether it is the British colonialism of India or that of any other colonial power anywhere else in the world (and at any time), the exploitation of a land and its people always nets the same results: the reinforcement by way of exploitation of a society's harmful and divisive ills (such as the caste system in India), the dehumanization of the colonized, and the inevitable creation of cheap labor. Of course, there is much more horror to colonization than just those things, but those aspects are the basics and ones illustrated perfectly in White Elephant.

Aiden Byrne is an Irish police officer serving the British crown in Madraspatnam in 1878. He loves poetry and introspection, and up until he witnesses the harm and pain of the dark world he is reinforcing through his position, his life is peachy keen. Once Aiden sees the ugly truth of what and whom he represents, he is tormented and torn between his power and his deep humanity. It's an inner fight that tears him apart and changes him.

I did fear that this would be just another portrait of a white savior, but it wasn't. In fact, I feel it was India and its people who save Aiden, or at least his humanity. It is Aiden's inner turmoil and troubled perspective that the ridiculousness and grotesqueness of colonialism are shown clearer than through any other character in this heartbreaking novel.

Five stars, through and through.

I’ve been hearing B. Jeyamohan’s name for a long time, and "White Elephant" is actually my first book by him. Even the cover caught my attention because it is so unusual. You see an elephant trapped inside what looks like a giant ice cube, and once you know what the story is about, that image starts making a lot more sense. The writing itself is quite simple, but the subject is anything but easy.

Set during the Great Famine of 1876–78, the story takes us to Madras, where we see the lives of workers who are already struggling with poverty, caste discrimination and hunger. A British police officer, Aiden Byrne, gets drawn into their world after witnessing the brutal treatment of Dalit workers at the Ice House. As he travels through the famine-hit areas and meets people like Kathavarayan, he slowly begins to understand that what is happening around him is much bigger than just hunger or poverty. It is about caste, power, exploitation and the way ordinary people are treated when they have no power.

This is definitely not an easy or light read. There were moments when I had to stop, take a break and come back to it because some of the things described are genuinely difficult to read. But that is also what stayed with me. "White Elephant" made me think about a part of history that I knew very little about, while telling the story through people rather than just dates and events. If you enjoy historical fiction that makes you uncomfortable, makes you think, and stays with you even after you close the book, this is one to pick up.
