This was a great, short read and fit well in the Culinary Creatures 'verse. It contained a bunch of tropes I love, such as like enemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine (although sunshine with an edge, I have to say), forced proximity, and only one bed. It's also in the Tinsel and Tentacles collection, with Vic being the up and coming kraken in extreme snow sports, competing with Rebel the human for both the top spot and underdog status. They really have more in common than they think. Low angst, HEA.

This was a really cute read, especially around the holidays.
I loved the grumpy/sunshine dynamic the two had and the bit of competitive nature.

Without giving too much away, one of my fav tropes is when the two love interests are in close quarters with no where to go and with one bed. So add that plus tentacles? Yes please

L’s writing is always easy to get lost in; I never want to put her books down. This is another short fun read to add to your TBR

*I received an ARC copy from the author and these are my own thoughts :)

Rebel without a Claus is a story about two professional snowboarders, human Rebel Rhail and kraken Vic Amares, set in the same universe as the author's 'Culinary Creatures' series. As per the author's note, "this universe takes place on an alternate Earth in which monsters evolved alongside humans. Humans make up only a small subset of Earth’s population and have since the beginning of time."

The story opens with Rebel running into Vic at the Toronto airport after both their flights get canceled due to an incoming snowstorm. Rebel is still feeling bitter after Vic bested him at three events they both competed in at the Toronto Holiday Invitational. Vic graciously invites Rebel to share a rustic cabin he rented for the duration of the storm, and even though Rebel refuses at first, he finds himself without options as there don't seem to be any other rooms or rentals available. Vic's rustic cabin turns out to be somewhat falsely advertised, with only one bed and an empty fridge, but Vic takes it cheerfully in stride, proceeding to order groceries and prepare a meal for both of them, while Rebel parks himself on an uncomfortable couch and ungratefully bitches at Vic. Things between the two heat up after Rebel has another hissy fit at Vic and gets injured deciding to snowboard in a blizzard. The two battle for dominance, but ultimately,

I wasn't really a fan of Rebel and Vic's romance, and that was mostly due to Rebel's personality and treatment of Vic. Vic was a cheerful, nice guy with more than a bit of hero worship when it came to Rebel, who was the reason for Vic getting into snowboarding in the first place. Rebel, on the other hand, was grumpy and bitter about being replaced at the top by Vic. While Rebel's feelings were understandable, I still found him rude and extremely ungrateful towards Vic, who offered him a place to stay, provided him with food, and generally went out of his way to please Rebel, who never even thought of saying thank you to Vic. For a supposed underdog and a human minority, Rebel came across as awfully entitled. The only reason their relationship could even work out was that Vic was way too nice and too easygoing to call Rebel out on any of his bullshit. Rose-tinted glasses don't even begin to explain Vic's feelings when it came to Rebel.

Throwing a glance over my shoulder, I spotted Rebel exactly where he’d been all day, stretched out on the sofa, staring blankly at the television. He hadn’t lifted a finger to do anything. I used to think I’d be irritated by that, but it was actually kind of nice to be able to work without someone in my way. There was a part of me that liked the idea of him lounging around, reserving all his energy for the bedroom, which I hoped was the case.

Out of the four books I've read so far in the series, this was the one I enjoyed the least. In a universe where monsters were supposed to have been the majority of the population evolving alongside humans, the story setting felt awfully human-centric to me.

Themes: dual POV, human/kraken, opposites attract, snowboarding, rivalry, snowed in, only one bed, tentacles, Christmas

good characters, story but without the richness of details I expect from this universe

Rating: 3.5🌈

Rebel without a Claus takes place within a favorite universe of mine, that of L Eveland’s Culinary Creatures. It’s a rare world where all species exist together, with humans being on the lower level just because of their lesser physical abilities. Moth people? Shifters and vampires? Tentacles? It hasn’t mattered because whatever the individual character’s physiology, it’s just the norm here. The author’s writing is just so outstanding at making it believable.

The four books that make up the main series excel on multiple levels, plots, characters, locations, and surrounding those incredible beings with a culture to match them.

I enjoyed the rocky romance of the winter athletes , human Rebel Rhail and tentacled being Vic Amares, as they work their way through misunderstandings and resentments in a snowed in cabin near a Canadian airport. As always Eveland makes the seemingly impossible seem real and commonplace, their stories and frustrations become relatable as does their pentup sexual feelings towards each other.

But what I am missing here is how the author would have given the reader an idea of what the community and culture that Vic Amares comes from. We get bits and pieces but nothing like the rich depiction that I have seen before. I would have been delighted if more of that, and any type of cultural connection to have been pulled in the relationship.

It leaves this story with some of the best examples of that universe (like the characters) but missing the richness of the whole.

L Eveland is an auto read and this is a good read. Add it to your list this season.

2.5/5 Alas, this didn’t really work for me. I was waiting for the payoff of Rebel’s attitude really improving, and it took way too long for me. He was snarky and mean a lot, and it didn’t feel like he ever really apologised. It was hard to see what Vic really liked about him. I’m not a fan of hate sex, and this felt a lot like that to me—especially because it was rough and further injured an already injured character. (To be fair, the characters seemed fine with it, it just made me uncomfortable.)

I also found myself pulled out of the story a few times by the two characters describing one another (or wondering about one another) as though they’d never been with or knew very little about a human or kraken. If this is a world where all these species have always coexisted, would there not be more knowledge out there between health/biology classes, dating, and/or sports locker rooms? It was handy descriptions for the reader, sure, but it made everyone seem incredibly insular—while the book also treated the fact that they were trying to get together as completely commonplace (suggesting that interspecies relationships are normal).

I would have liked more actually spending meaningful time together—those were my favourite parts, when they had the snowball fight, Vic finding and taking care of Rebel, and the final fix-it scene.

This was pretty good overall, although it was quite a slow burn for the most part. We have rivals to lovers with two Xtreme Sports League players. Rebel was older and Victor (Vic) idolized him; Rebel was the whole reason Vic decided to compete in the first place. I will say it was a bit confusing keeping these two and their train of thoughts straight, because one minute they were fighting and the next they were thinking about how hot the other person was.

This was in the Culinary Creatures universe, but I really don’t remember these characters. Rebel might not have been mentioned before, but it seemed like Vic knew Tripp from college and he talked about getting a recipe from Inzo, so maybe he was mentioned in Brewtiful’s. Not sure. I would have liked to see Vic’s family since they were just mentioned, especially since he talked about Krakemas and all their traditions. I also would have liked to see more of Gram.

The romance aspect felt a bit rushed to me since they went from rivals to lovers to basically being exclusive within a day or two. It seemed a little unrealistic to me, even though they both honestly had a crush on the other for years. It was grumpy/sunshine trope mostly although sunshine was a bit of a brat at moments. I’d probably give this 3.5-4 out of 5 stars.

This was very sweet

I really loved this. Rebel and Vic were so good together. I really felt for Rebel - I could understand why he felt like he did. For sure, Vic didn’t deserve Rebel’s antagonistic attitude but I could see how twisted up Rebel could get and how much it could hurt. It’s hard when you’re in a competitive environment not to let everything become about the competition and allow your worth to be directly tied to being on the top of your game. Vic was such a sweetheart. Yes Rebel was a bit rude and unfriendly, but I liked that Vic was willing to actually see Rebel and past all his walls and his prickliness. He pushed to get Rebel to open up but what I really loved is that Vic was willing to put his foot down and stand up for himself. Once these guys actually got together they were so hot and sweet! The small moments were just perfect, they were sweet and tender and made their relationship feel so much deeper. Even better was mixed in with that sweetness was a ton of heat and sexy tentacledness! It was a great addition to the culinary series and a perfect little winter holiday novella.

This book is part of the Tinsel and Tentacles series, but is also part of Eveland's Culinary Creatures universe where monsters and humans occupy the same world. This addition to the series is a fun, short read perfect for a cold, snowy day.

Vic and Rebel are opponents in the winter X Games. Rebel is the veteran competitor and Vic is the new guy on the scene who's been pushing Rebel out of the spotlight. When they find themselves snowed in together during a blizzard, the sparks fly.

Most of the angst in their relationship comes from Rebel's jealousy and some misunderstandings. Rebel was frustrating at times because he really is a sore loser. He blamed a lot of things on Vic that were not his fault. Vic is a total sweetheart and wants nothing more than Rebel's attention.

The steamy scenes were super hot, especially with Vic's...unique anatomy. Once these two get their act together, they are so sweet and swoony. Before they can get their HEA, they have to learn to communicate and compromise, and the payoff is more than worth it!

L. Eveland writes so well that I’ll read (and enjoy) tropes that I have next to zero interest in, including sports romance apparently lol. In all seriousness this was a fun read, there are no lulls where I felt my attention wander, and even though it wasn’t super Christmas-y it had good holiday vibes. I didn’t miss the Christmas stuff, tbh I didn’t really think of it until L. had mentioned it at the end lol.

Vic was a fantastic character, I like that the Culinary Creatures world has far more brats than L’s other monster series (even though I LOVE all the feels & the characters in that one). Rebel was a bit harder to like and pretty insufferable at times but L. tosses in just enough softness here and there to make him bearable. Then he really blossoms under Vic’s affection and I am a sucker for any sort of grumpy one softens for the sunshine one dynaimic.

Rebel Without a Claus reminded me of some of my favorite holiday romances (plus tentacles). There was a fair amount of angst between the two characters who had a long-term rivalry and jealousy to work through.

Rebel and Vic compete in snowboarding and skiing competitions. Both are at the top of their game. But Rebel is besieged with fears of being forgotten as he finds himself replaced in the limelight by the up-and-comer Vic. I felt their competitiveness and the impermanence of athletic careers came across clearly.

The romance was a little aggressive but with moments of tenderness and sweetness. The holiday was more of a background than a big part of the story, but I didn't miss it. Although I'd love to know more about Krakenmas!

A cute, quick Christmas read!

I loved this rivals to lovers/ grumpyxsunshine holiday romance. Rebel is the human grinch who hates Christmas, and Vic is the sweet kraken who loves the holidays. Vic was just a little ball of sunshine that perfectly melted Rebel. The romance, while quick, was believable and adorable. The spice was hot, but it didn't overpower the romance or the story. I adored every moment of this book, and honestly would have read more because I loved them so much.

If you want spice, low stakes, and light Christmas feels, this book is for you.

I received this book as an ARC, but this is my own opinion.

I really enjoyed reading this. Rebel is a bit mean and has a bad attitude. Vic, the kraken, such a big sweetie -has a shocking ego though- is madly keen on and very misunderstood by Rebel. I felt so bad for him, the way Rebel treated him, but he’s sweet and persistent and quite irresistible. I liked that they didn’t just fall into insta-love with each other, and they are actually quite funny together, with lots of good snark, and fabulous use of tentacles. A very enjoyable, fun read with a very satisfactory HEA. Left me smiling.

This was a super cute short easy read. I don't know if I'd call it a Christmas story but it was definitely a winter story.

● Paranormal/Fantasy
● Holiday/Christmas (More a winter story)
● Fast easy read
● Tentacles
● Sports rivals that actually are crushing on each other
● Grumpy/Sunshine
● Forced Proximity
● Snow storm
● One bed
● Low angst
● Some sweet moments
● Made me chuckle
● More sex than I'd like
● Loved the MCs
● Satisfying enough HEA, a bit abrupt though
● Multi author series
● A definite stand-alone

Rivals in the Xtreme Sports League, Rebel , a human, and Vic, a kraken, are victims of canceled flights and forced to share a cabin. With only one bed, it doesn't tale long for them to change from rivals to lovers. Rebel is too stubborn and prideful to see how they can be both together and compete. Vic is strong enough to make him decide. It's a short novella but packs a punch with sexy times and not much Christmas. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

Rebel without a Claus is part of the Tinsel and Tentacles series. Each book is a standalone but if you like tentacles why not read the whole series. This book is set in Eveland's Culinary Creatures universe. It is the story of Rebel a human who hates Christmas and Vic a sweet kraken who loves the holidays. This is just to cute for words. I really enjoyed this grumpy/sunshine enemies to lovers story. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

A Happy Kraken, A Grumpy Human, One Bed and Some Tentacles! I believe that sums up this fun little read! I cannot help but laugh at a snowboarding Kraken even if Rebel cannot. Rebel is a bit rude and unbearable at first, but who can blame him. He has been the top guy and now a Kraken is coming to steal his glory. Let's just say that our Kraken uses his tentacles for far better purposes in this little fantasy romance.

Really enjoyed this winter romance, xtreme sportz indeed. Rebel is an insecure jerk at first, takes him a good long while to adjust his perspective, but he does eventually get it together. Vic is such a sweetheart, but won't put up with much for long. They fit together well, with a bit of compromising. Fun, snarky, steamy, sweet, So good! My first experience with this author, and I definitely am not disappointed. Love the world, characters, and liberties taken. Good job.

Forced proximity in a snowstorm

We did it, I made it through one of the Tinsel and Tentacle books. I really enjoyed that the characters had a history and that it included a bit of enemies to lovers, though the enemies was kinda one sided. lol. Rebel is a bit of a jerk throughout but he shows his sweet side to Vic plus he makes one heck of a grand gesture at the end. Fun reading!

Only one bed with a tentacular twist! I wasn't honestly sure what I was in for reading this, based on the cover, I just trusted that this is an author who consistently turns out books that delight and surprise me and I hoped I'd enjoy this wintery special, and I did. Winter sports rivals, snowed in cabin, only one bed, a dash of hopeless longing and some spicy tentacle MM action. If you like the sound of even half those tropes you'll thoroughly enjoy this.

This was adorable! I loved Vic, I love the Culinary Creatures universe in general. I thought it was a cute tie in that Vic knew Nicolas new boo... Rebel was adorable in his stubborn ways. I do wish we had gotten more of rebel and vic, between the plane and the event. But I loved what we did get and think it's a perfect story for this series

Tropes (and tentacles) abound here: only one bed, rivals to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity…this is a quick read that deftly weaves together its component elements. Rebel and Vic have serious potential as more than just competitors, and it’s fun watching their relationship evolve. 4.5 stars.

When cancelled flights force sports rivals Rebel and Vic to be together and ultimately share a cabin, the grumpy human and happy/sunshine Kraken have no option but to address the tension between them.

A cute, forced proximity, holiday read with some passionate scenes, two men who realise that they can make a relationship work and a good HEA.

This was a quick read. I really enjoyed it. Rebel and Vic are rivals. They get stranded together in a cabin. Things get pretty hot and heavy from there. Then Rebel says things he shouldn't have. But luckily Gran knocks some sense into him.

This book is not Christmasy at all, which is fine. It's mentioned but that's about it.

If you want a quick rivals to lovers read then this is it!

It was ok! I really liked this author’s Culinary Creatures series so I was excited to see that this book was in the same universe.

Except that Rebel, to me, was hard to like. I liked Vic! But I don’t think I really liked Rebel until those last two chapters. And even there at the end, I felt it was all Vic doing the work. At least it ended on a good note!

Competition made them enemies. A snow storm made them house mates. Hate sex turned them into lovers. But it took a little communication and a lot less pride to give them the happily-ever-after they’d both wanted from the beginning.

A little aggravating and a lot sweet. Sometimes all it takes is one chance to change two lives.
