Manguel believes in the central importance of the book in societies of the written word where, in recent times, the intellectual act has lost most of its prestige. كتاب مختلف لكاتب مثقف وقارئ متميز يصول ويجول بين شخصيات مهمة ظهرت في كل آداب العالم بما فيها الأساطير والخرافات ويتصورها من منظور مختلف ويحاول تحليلها في ضوء معطيات لم تكن موجودة وقت أن ابتكرت كل تلك الشخصات الغنية لكن أتصور أن الكتاب لن يحوز على إعجاب من لم يقرأ تلك النصوص ويعرف تلك الشخصيات مسبقا بكل صراعاتها وسياقاتها الثقافية والتاريخية ... كتاب ظريف

Koliko obrazovana osoba je pisala ovo djelo, ja sam oduševljena, od književnosti do politike, od mudrosti do empatije, stvarno svaka čast i zbog toga ponajviše 5⭐️, a i zbog mudrosti čudovišta koje su tako lijepo zapažene i zapisane, da bi manje bilo grehota dati!

دائما ما أعود لمانغويل مهما ابتعدت عنه، هناك دائما كتاب له ينتظرني بعدما تتعب عيني من عناوين الكتب، وبعد حيرة اختيار الكتاب القادم، أجدني ألهث لمؤلفات مانغويل، واعلم أن أحدها سينقذني من حيرتي.
مع مانغويل أجد الثقافة والفكر والادب والفلسفة، أجد تحليلا لا يخطر علي بال، ومعالجة فلسفية فريدة لم أقرأها من قبل ... مؤلفاته دائما كآلة الزمن، تسافر بك من زمن لزمن، ومن عصر لعصر، ومن ميناء لميناء، تبحر بك دون تمهيد، دون استطراد زائد، أو حشو ممل، وأجمل ما في الأمر، أن مؤلفاته تفتح الباب لمزيد من الكتب التي ربما لم تعرفها، او لم تقرأها من قبل .
مانغويل، يا تلميذ بورخيس، يا من كنت تقرأ له، ونحن الان نقرأ لك، سأعود إليك مجددا عن قريب بإذن الله .

Superīga, superīga grāmata. Lieliska odziņa uz laba grāmatu gada kūkas. Autors te ir varējis pilnībā izpaust visu, ko zina, un izskatās, ka zina viņš daudz. Viņš dzīvi skata caur grāmatu prizmu, jo grāmatas bija viņa bērnības pirmā uzticamā un nemainīgā vērtība, kas vienlaikus ir skumji un arī skaisti.

Alberto Manguel ile bir süredir ayrı kalmıştık, Efsanevi Yaratıklar vasıtasıyla tekrar kavuştuk. Özleşmişiz!
Manguel'in yaratıkları bildiğimiz anlamda yaratıklar değil, "yaratılmış"lar aslında onlar. Manguel, hayatında yer etmiş kurmaca karakterlerin / yaratılmışların bir dökümünü sunuyor bu kitapta.
Şöyle başlıyor Efsanevi Yaratıklar: "Biyoloji bize kanlı canlı varlıklardan türemiş olduğumuzu söylüyor ama içten içe biliyoruz ki biz kalem kağıttan türeme hayaletlerin kızları ve oğullarıyız."
Ah, öyle değil miyiz sahiden de? (Bu noktada bizzat kendi adımın bir romandan geldiğini hatırlayıp gülümsüyorum. 🤍)
Sonra şöyle devam ediyor: "Kurmaca anlamına gelen fiction sözcüğü İngilizceye on beşinci yüzyılın başlarında girdi ve anlamı 'yaratılmış veya hayal edilmiş şey'di. Etimoloji sözlüklerinin dediğine göre, İngilizceye Fransızcadan geçmiş. Fransızcada da 'kilden yoğurmak ya da biçimlendirmek' anlamına gelen Latince 'fingere' fiilinden türemiş. Um livro sobre as personagens que ficam no nosso imaginário e que têm em si muito mais do que poderiamos pensar...
Divertido, educativo e muito escrito.
Por vezes acho que o autor analisou demasiado as personagens que deixaram de ser personagens inocentes de histórias de infância para se tornarem em monstros cheios de significados mais adultos e obscuros.

Šī bija intelektuāla lasāmviela, kur interesantas vietas mijās ar tādām, kurās autors mani pazaudēja, jo nespēju savilkt viņa apgalvojumus ar literāro tēlu. Tomēr interesanta iespēja paskatīties uz Alisi, Drakulu, Supermenu un citiem (arī nezināmiem) dziļāk, tā teikt - no kurienes tēlam vai literārajam darbam aug kājas. Monstrīguma patiesībā maz, vairāk ir grotiskais, neglītais, slēptais, kas kārtējo reizi parāda - lielākie monstri ir reāli cilvēki nevis iedomu tēli.

Alberto Manguel’s book Fabulous Monsters details those fictional characters that he seems to feel the most for. At times it is a stranger list. There is Phoebe Caulfield for one. But it is an international list and that in of itself is a pleasure. Each character gets his/her own essay. The book, like most of Manguel’s work when he writes about reading is engrossing and great fun.
At times, though, it is very strange and, dare I say, very male.
Manguel’s reading of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty are bit disturbing, off putting. They are not necessarily wrong. But strange. He takes about the seductive power about Red Riding Hood, and while he is not wrong when he calls her both the seduced and seducer, there is something weird about that expression considering that the version Manguel mostly deals with is the Perrault version, which is really about women and sex. He also does not mention the coda in the Grimm version (I can see Angela Carter rapping his knuckles about that), and so there is a disjointed feeling.
The same is true about his reading of Sleeping Beauty where the rape versions are not mentioned, which is strange because there is a French version. It makes for slightly strange reading.
But his essays about Alice and Gertrude in particular are absolutely wonderful. His take on Alice is great and his opinion of Gertrude is quite amusing. He also gets you to look at Catcher int eh Rye in different way (besides Holden as an ass). He is one of those people who does feel something for Gertrude.

Apesar de ter sido uma leitura prazerosa senti-me um pouco perdida. 2/3 do livro contém comparações com personagens/ personalidades cujos nomes não me diziam nada. Só no ultimo terço do livro senti uma narrativa mais fluida.

I cannot review this book fairly on its merits, for two reasons. First, I read it in short bursts while in moderate to intense pain so can remember very little detail about it. Second, the copy I read has special significance to me. I bought it immediately after hearing Alberto Manguel speak at an Edinburgh International Book Festival event last week. As he is my favourite non-fiction author, I was very excited about the event and determined to attend despite feeling awful. I took enough painkillers to make it through and am so glad I did. Manguel is an absolutely charming and erudite speaker. As well as discussing libraries, Borges, and New York's book stalls, he doodled Rebus, Jean Brodie, and the Lady of Shallott on a whiteboard, to everyone’s delight. I hadn’t realised he would be signing afterwards, so hadn’t brought along my copy of The Library at Night (an all-time favourite book). So instead I purchased ‘Fabulous Monsters’ and got that inscribed, managing to awkwardly tell Manguel that no other writer conveys the wonder of libraries so well. So whatever the merits of this book’s content, it is now a treasured possession.
As to said content, ‘Fabulous Monsters’ is a collection of vignettes in which Manguel reflects on the appeal of his favourite fictional characters. All are accompanied by a lovely little doodled portrait, in a style that has something of Edward Lear and of Raymond Briggs. Each character's section is quite brief, so this is perhaps an appropriate book to dip into at times of diminished ability to concentrate. Consequently it doesn’t have the sustained power of his discursive extended works like Curiosity and The Library at Night. Nonetheless, the same delight in reading and fascinating juxtapositions can be found as are ubiquitous throughout Manguel’s oeuvre. Inevitably, I particularly enjoyed the entry for Alice in Wonderland as she’s one of my own favourite characters. Also of especial note are the reflections on Frankenstein’s monster, South America’s many tyrants, and Captain Nemo. I will re-read entries that especially caught my eye when feeling better, to gain greater appreciation of their wisdom. In the meantime, the book itself is a delightfully designed object. Even when read superficially, this collection provides a happy reminder of literary classics with wonderfully expressive illustrations.

أحببت الكتاب ، لطيف وخفيف ، من المهم أن يكون عندك فكرة عن الشخصيات قبل القراءة عنها، لأن بعضها يحتوي في مقاله على مدخل أو تعريف بالشخصية وبعضها لا يحتوي على ذلك.

Sunt câțiva autori ai căror cărți le cumpăr indiferent de titlu, indiferent de preț și a căror noi apariții mă bucură de fiecare dată. (A fost și cazul de față.)
"Monștri fabuloși" pare la prima vedere, după titlu, un bestiar, un compendiu care face inventarul unor ființe imaginare.Dar astfel de lucrări s-au tot scris, iar Manguel nu avea de ce să repete nici formulă, nici demersul lucrărilor de gen.
Ca alte cărți traduse în România care poartă semnătura lui Alberto Manguel și cartea de față este una de eseuri despre literatură și despre lume și despre modul în care cele două se oglindesc, se împletesc și se influențează.
Monștrii lui Manguel sunt personaje din cărți întâlnite în diferite etape ale vieții sale de cititor, astfel, întâlnim un amestec inedit și eclectic: de la domnul Bovary, Scufița Roșie, Iov, Iona sau Supermen și alte personaje la fel de insolite sau unele mai absconse, dar fără de care personajele principale ar fi incomplete sau nu ar putea fi definite ori nu și-ar putea îndeplini misiunea.
Pe unele din ele Manguel le analizează descompunându-le și recompunându-le, pentru altele face un arbore genealogic, găsindu-le antencesori și corespondenți în alte lucrări și opere literare sau istorice, alți monștri sunt doar un pretext pentru un eseu politic sau moralist.
Eseurile lui Manguel sunt foarte frumos construite și se adresează cititorului ca unui prieten pe care îl ia de braț și îl poartă prin aventura minunată a literaturii, facându-l complice, iar acesta va afla lucruri noi, pe altele le intuiește, dar fiecare dintre eseuri este o bucurie.
Orice cititor împătimit ar trebui să citească cărțile lui Manguel, fie doar și pentru a afla ceea ce deja știau.

شخصيات مذهلة من عالم الأدب تجلس مجتمعة داخل كتاب مذهل!
من فترة طويلة عايزة أجيب الكتاب ده، بدون أي أسباب وبدون ما أعرف حتي محتواه، الغلاف جذبني -أنا بحب الأغلفة البيضا جدا- واسمه كذلك، والأهم اسم "ألبرتو مانجويل".
الكتاب عبارة عن فصول قصيرة في كل فصل مانجويل بيحكي عن شخصية شهيرة نوعًا ما من عالم السحر الأدبي، ومش شرط تكون الشخصية دي بطلة في روايتها، ممكن يتكلم عن شخصية ثانوية في رواية ما لمجرد انه شايفها مميزة وحكيمة. زي ما في أول فصل بيحكي -في اختيار غريب- عن "مسيو بوفاري" الممل الباهت الشخصية النقيضة للبطلة "مدام بوفاري".
اتكلم عن شخصيات كتير رائعه زي أليس، وحش فرانكنشتاين، كوازيمودو، أم هاملت مش هاملت نفسه، وغيرهم كتير.

Manguel'den inanılmaz keyifli bir okuma!
Kitap sizi Dracula'dan Hacıvat ve Karagöz'e, Hamlet'in annesinden Şeytan'a müthiş bir yolculuğua çıkarıyor. Sadece bu efsanevi karakterleri ayrıntılı bir şekilde okumakla kalmıyor, aynı zamanda onların günümüz yansımalarını da yazarın bakış açısıyla gözlemlemiş oluyorsunuz.
Kitapta bir yerde sortesten bahsediyordu. Antik Roma'da yaygın bir kehanet yöntemiymiş. Bu yönteme göre Homeros kitaplarından rastgele bir sayfa açılırmış ve ona göre kehanet yapılırmış.
Okur okumaz kütüphaneye koşup Odessa'yı açtım, karşıma 162. sayfa çıktı; "Ama kimse görmüyordu onun gözyaşı döktüğünü.. Ne ad verdi sana yurdunda anan baban? Ülken, kentin neresi?"
Kitapta o kadar çok altını çizdiğim cümle oldu ki..
Yaşanmamış hayatı ve izlenmemiş yolu seçmek caziptir, insanı baştan çıkarır, çünkü şunu ya da bunu yapmış olsak her şeyin daha farklı olacağını, daha mutlu, daha akıllı olacağımızı, daha çok sevileceğimizi, daha çok saygı göreceğimizi hayal ederiz. Belki de öyle olmazdı.

كل كتاب بنقرأه بيشكل جزء من روحنا سواء ادركناه أو لا، الشخصيات اللي ممكن تكون خيال في سطور بتكون حقيقة جوانا لفترات كبيرة، بنتأثر بيها او بتشاركنا لحظات معينة أو مشاعر بعينها. ولكن "ليس كل شخصية أدبية تصلح أن تكون الرفيق المختار لأي قارئ، إذ إن الشخصيات التي نعشقها فقط هي التي ترافقنا طوال حياتنا."

Claro que, se ganharem um lugar central na vida, podem constituir um sinal de alerta. Mas estas representações podem auxiliar na aprendizagem diária, sejam elas os brinquedos predilectos, as animações do coração ou os heróis de livros mais lidos…
Alberto Manguel é um verdadeiro bibliófilo, entidade nas letras, amplamente reconhecido pelo seu aguçado gosto literário. Explícito nas suas obras, o amor aos livros norteou a sua existência - e a nossa, a ler cada uma delas. Neste conjunto de retratos escritos, o autor cromatiza, a preto e branco, diferentes personagens que calcorream a nossa imaginação, desde tenra idade até uma mais velha, já consideradas recordações ou invenções para os mais novos.

Mai vreau. Foarte tare este cartea. Am aflat multe lucruri despre personaje fabuloase, pe care le purtăm cu noi din copilărie începând. Și dacă am uitat de unele și ne e dor, domnul ăsta are grijă să ne încânte simțurile cu tot ce are de spus despre ele.
Mi-a adus aminte de Maimuța din "Călătorie spre Soare-apune" de U Ceng-en, pe care am adorat-o când eram mică. Și câte și mai câte. Deci, mai vreau.

Vim parar ao livro (e ao autor) um pouco por acaso: o título teve uma função incendiária, mas o fogo só alastrou realmente quando tropecei nas duas passagens que cito. Foi, portanto, desde o prefácio que surgiu uma empatia imensa pelo autor e pela generosidade da partilha que se esconde neste livro: também eu, tal como tantos outros leitores, crescemos rodeados de personagens fictícias que ganharam tanta ou mais importância do que os seres humanos que nos rodeiam. Estas personagens fictícias sedimentaram a sua presença em nós nos momentos que precisámos de direcção, de referências, de estrutura; foram (e são) amigos, mestres, exemplos (a seguir ou a rejeitar), modelos que nos permitiram (e que permitem) avaliar quem somos e quem queremos ser...
Cada capítulo é dedicado a uma personagem e Manguel escreve como quem conversa entre amigos: abertamente, despudoradamente, simplesmente pelo prazer de partilhar. Conhecem certamente aquela expressão que algumas pessoas têm estampada no rosto quando falam de algo que as entusiasma: os lábios com um semi-sorriso que nunca se descola, os olhos brilhantes, as mãos prolongando o fluxo da narrativa... foi um pouco assim que imaginei o autor a falar de livros, de personagens e de aprendizagens que o apaixonam.

Fabulous Monsters was definitely not my cup of tea. It has no less than 37 essays which all have a literary character as a starting point. The book is a bit over 200 pages long, so I'll have to ask you to imagine my dissatisfaction at having to change the whole contents of my working memory after only three pages so that I can accommodate the new variables put forward by the author, essay after essay. In short, it was not pleasant, and the content was generally not worth it.
A few essays, most notably Jonah, are standouts. Their precision and sharpness are very much the reflection of “the experience of the world” and his “own changing identity” distilled through “the imaginary characters [he's] met throughout [his] readings” (quote from the introduction). Others, not so much. All, or at least most, of them follow the same structure: get a character, tie it to a social or psychological issue, then reveal how that character reflects the issue. It's fun and of great quality when he does it right, it's slow and tedious when he doesn't manage to get the point across as clearly.
I have a hunch that the short length of these essays is to blame. He assumes a lot of familiarity with important literary works in the western canon (so maybe I'm to blame here) and, if you combine this with the lack of universality of some of the issues he addresses, you get some half-assed arguments with a lot of quotes about mere platitudes. I also believe that someone of a more literary bend would get more out of these essays, instead of just another interpretation of rather inconsequential literary characters.
Manguel has a very rich literary pedigree, but flaunting it in the reader's eyes without context and a lead does little to make his essays relevant, while their sheer number creates difficulties for the reader.

În rândul pasionaților de lectură din toate colțurile lumii, există o venerație adâncă pentru marii autori precum Shakespeare și Cervantes. Totuși, acești maeștri literari, sunt mai puțin palpabili decât creațiile lor nemuritoare. Regele Lear și Lady Macbeth, Don Quijote și Dulcinea sunt prezențe vii chiar și pentru acei cititori care nu au avut privilegiul de a se pierde în paginile cărților lor. Suntem familiarizați cu pasiunile încâlcite ale reginei Dido și ale lui Don Juan mult mai mult decât cu viețile intime ale lui Virgiliu și Molière, cu excepția detaliilor dezvăluite în romanele captivante ale lui Hermann Broch și Mikhail Bulgakov. Și astfel, în lumea lecturii, s-a dovedit întotdeauna că visele ficțiunii dau naștere acelei lumi pe care o numim realitate.
Ficțiunea literară, cu personajele ei fermecătoare și pline de viață, are puterea de a captiva și de a încolți în sufletele cititorilor o adâncă conexiune emoțională. Căci nu este doar povestea în sine, ci și personajele care o populează, care înalță și dau viață fiecărei pagini. Prin harul autorilor, aceste entități fictive devin mai mult decât simple cuvinte pe hârtie. Ele prind contur și umplu paginile cu esența umanității lor, cu pasiunile lor, cu luptele lor interioare.
Fie că este vorba despre tragedii shakespeareane, despre aventurile năstrușnice ale cavalerului neînfricat Don Quijote sau despre destinele încâlcite ale iubirii și aventurii, personajele literare devin companioni de neuitat pentru cititori. Ele ne însoțesc în călătoria noastră, oglindind luptele, bucuriile și dilemele noastre personale. De la suferința lui Hamlet la ambițiile lui Macbeth, de la romantismul lui Heathcliff la sensibilitatea lui Anna Karenina, aceste figuri literare pătrund adânc în sufletul cititorilor, inspirând empatie, compasiune și introspecție.
Nu este nevoie să fim experți în literatură pentru a cunoaște și a iubi aceste personaje. Ele trăiesc în conștiința noastră colectivă, străbătând granițele timpului și culturii. Suntem captivați de aventurile lor și trăim alături de ei, deoarece reușesc să atingă corzi sensibile și să exploreze teme și trăiri umane universale. Într-o lume agitată și adesea imprevizibilă, personajele literare oferă o ancoră, un refugiu într-o realitate alternativă unde putem explora aspectele profunde ale propriei noastre existențe.
Prin intermediul ficțiunii, călătorim în tărâmul imaginar și, în același timp, în tărâmul introspecției. Cărțile devin complicele noastre și bibliotecile, refugiile noastre personale. Ele ne învață să privim lumea din perspective noi, să ne punem întrebări fundamentale și să explorăm condiția umană în toată complexitatea ei.
Așadar, în timp ce personajele literare nu pot exista în mod fizic, ele rămân, cu siguranță, prezente în sufletele cititorilor, hrănindu-ne dorința de cunoaștere și deschizând porți către lumi neexplorate. Ele reprezintă amintiri și lecții învățate, înfăptuind o călătorie de la literatură către viața însăși. Prin intermediul acestui miracol al ficțiunii, visele autorilor prind viață și se împletesc cu visele noastre, construind lumea pe care o numim realitate.

Nu este nevoie să fim experți în literatură pentru a cunoaște și a iubi aceste personaje. Ele trăiesc în conștiința noastră colectivă, străbătând granițele timpului și culturii. Suntem captivați de aventurile lor și trăim alături de ei, deoarece reușesc să atingă corzi sensibile și să exploreze teme și trăiri umane universale. Într-o lume agitată și adesea imprevizibilă, personajele literare oferă o ancoră, un refugiu într-o realitate alternativă unde putem explora aspectele profunde ale propriei noastre existențe.
Prin intermediul ficțiunii, călătorim în tărâmul imaginar și, în același timp, în tărâmul introspecției. Cărțile devin complicele noastre și bibliotecile, refugiile noastre personale. Ele ne învață să privim lumea din perspective noi, să ne punem întrebări fundamentale și să explorăm condiția umană în toată complexitatea ei.
Așadar, în timp ce personajele literare nu pot exista în mod fizic, ele rămân, cu siguranță, prezente în sufletele cititorilor, hrănindu-ne dorința de cunoaștere și deschizând porți către lumi neexplorate. Ele reprezintă amintiri și lecții învățate, înfăptuind o călătorie de la literatură către viața însăși. Prin intermediul acestui miracol al ficțiunii, visele autorilor prind viață și se împletesc cu visele noastre, construind lumea pe care o numim realitate.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley.
Let me start by saying that I might have given this book 3 stars if it wasn’t so poorly titled. The characters that Manguel discusses are not all monsters. I get that it’s an homage to a book quote, but I think it’s misleading. If I had gone into this book knowing it was a series of meditations in the author’s favorite literature characters, I probably would have been in a better mindset to appreciate them.
I also think that the meditations were a bit self-indulgent and made some leaps and assumptions that I don’t think were necessary or correct. The writing was spotless in a technical sense, but I didn’t find myself truly enjoying this.

يستعرض الكتاب شخصيات عديدة من عالم الأدب، أغلبها عرفناها منذ الطفولة؛
مثل شخصية أليس من بلاد العجائب، ذات الرداء الأحمر، دون جوان ومسيو بوفاري من رواية "مدام بوفاري".
كتاب خفيف ولكن لا أنصح به كونه يحتوي على تفاصيل من روايات عديدة تعتبر بمثابة حرق لمن لم يقرأها.
مثل شخصية أليس من بلاد العجائب، ذات الرداء الأحمر، دون جوان ومسيو بوفاري من رواية "مدام بوفاري".

هذهِ ليست المرّة الأولى التي أقرأ فيها "شخصيات مذهلة من عالم الأدب" ولن تكون الأخيرة بكل تأكيد إن كان في العمر بقيّة.
لا شيء خارق في محتويات الكتاب ولن يغير حياتك، لكنه سيجعلك تبتسم كثيرًا وتتذكر شخصياتك المذهلة، فمانغويل ذكر لك شخصياته واستفاض بالشرح عنها، تاركًا لخيالك العنان في تسطير شخصياتك المذهلة... وهذا ما قررت أن أفعله بعد قراءتي الثانية لهذا الكتاب التي استمرت يومين نسيت فيها عقارب الساعة حتى ساعات الفجر الأولى.
أنصحكم بقراءته وأغبطنا نحن قرّاء الأدب على هذهِ النعمة.
غالبًا ما تبدو الشخصيات التخيلية المميزة حيّة أكثر من أصدقائنا المخلوقين من لحم ودم. إذ إن هذهِ الشخصيات لا تلتزم القصص الأصلية بل تغيّر الحبكة مع كل قراءة جديدة، إذ تعمل على إبراز مشاهد معينة والتعتيم على أخرى وتضيف حدثًا مذهلًا كنّا قد نسيناه لأسباب غامضة أو تفصيلًا لم ننتبه إليه سابقًا.... ولكن ليس كل شخصية أدبية تصلح أن تكون الرفيق المختار لأي قارئ، إذ أن الشخصيات التي نعشقها فقط هي التي ترافقنا في حياتنا.
بالنسبة إلى القرّاء غالبًا ما يتكشّف العالم في صفحات الكتب التي يقرؤنها... إذ طالما أدرك القرّاء أن أحلام العالم التخيلي تلد العالم الذي نسميه بالعالم الحقيقي.
على النقيض من القرّاء الذين يشيخون ولا يستعيدون شبابهم مرة أخرى، تبقى الشخصيات التخييلية على حالها كما كانت عندما قرأنا قصصها في المرة الأولى إضافة إلى ما صارت عليه عبر قراءاتنا المتعاقبة.
لطالما تراءت لي حياتي كتقليب صفحات الكثير من الكتب. إذ توصف قراءاتي التي تشكل خريطتي الخيالية جُلَّ تجاربي الحميمية كما أن في مقدوري تقصّي كل شيء أعرفه عن أساسيات الحياة في مقاطع أو أسطر معينة قرأتها في الكتب.
تعلمتُ تجاربي في الحياة - الحب والموت والصداقة والفقد والامتنان والدهشة والألم والخوف- بالإضافة إلى هويتي المتغيرة من الشخصيات الخيالية التي قابلتها عبر قراؤاتي أكثر مما تعلمته من وجهي المظلل في المرآة أو من صورتي المعكوسة في عيون الآخرين.
الأماكن الحقيقية لا توجد في الخرائط... هي الأماكن التي تتلامع في أحلامنا اليومية.
من بين المعجزات التي تشكل علاملات فارقة في تاريخنا آدابنا ليس هناك حدث أكثر إعجازًا من ولادة أليس...
هذا لأن عالم أليس هو عالمنا بالطبع، ليس بالمفهوم الرمزي المجرد أو بصفته حكاية مجازية أو حكاية خرافية عن عالم مليء بالألم والقهر. إن (بلاد العجائب) هي ببساطة ذلك العالم المجنون الذي نلقى أنفسنا فيه كل يوم بكل ما فيه من نعيم وجحيم ومَطهر، مكان علينا أن نتجول فيه كما نتجول في الحياة.
وعلى غرارنا تمتلك أليس سلاحًا واحدًا في رحلتها:اللغة. فبواسطة الكلمات نشق طريقنا عبر غابة القطة تشيشر وملعب كروكيه بنت الكبة. وبالكلمات تكتشف أليس الفرق بين طبيعة الأشياء ومظاهرها. كما أن تساؤلاتها هي التي تستحضر جنون بلاد العجائب المتخفي، كما في عالمنا، تحت طبقة رقيقة من الاتزان الاجتماعي التقليدي.
وربما نحاول البحث عن المنطق في الجنون، كما تفعل الدوقة بالبحث عن المغازي الأخلاقية للأشياء بغض النظر عن عبثيتها.
لكن الحقيقة كما تقول القطة تشيشر لأليس، هي أننا لا نملك أي خيار في هذهِ المسألة، فبغض النظر عن الطريق الذي نسلكه سنرى أنفسنا محاطين بالمجانين، وعلينا أن نجيد استخدام اللغة للمحافظة على توازننا.
تكشف الكلمات لأليس ولنا أيضًا أن الحقيقة الثابثة الوحيدة في هذا العالم ا��محير هي أننا نخفي جنوننا تحت غطاء من العقلانية العلنية. فعلى غرار أليس، نجازف بإغراق أنفسنا والآخرين في دموعنا. ومثل الطائر الأبله "الدودو" نحب أن نعتقد أن بغض النظر عن الاتجاه الذي نركض فيه أو قدرتنا على الركض، كلنا رابحون ونستحق الجوائز. وعلى شاكلة الأرنب الأبيض نوزع أوامرنا يمين ويسار كأن على الآخرين أن يشعروا بالواجب والفخر للمسارعة إلى خدمتنا. وعلى غرار اليسروع، نشكك في هوية الآخرين من دون أن ندرك هويتنا حتى لو كنا على وشك فقدان تلك الهوية. كما نؤمن على غرار الدوقة بمعاقبة الأطفال على سلوكهم المزعج من دون أي اهتمام بالأسباب الموجبه له.
إن خيار الحياة التي لم نعشها والدرب الذي لم نسلكه مُغر لأننا نتخيل لو أننا فعلنا هذا أو قمنا بذلك، لكانت الأشياء مختلفة ولكنّا أكثر سعادة وحكمة، ولكان الآخرون يحبوننا أكثر ويحترموننا أكثر. لكن ربما ما كان لشيء أن يتغير.
