A sapphic swords & sorcery space adventure!

Venturing to the skies was meant to be perfect…

Adventurer JASYN has dreamed of taking to the skies her whole life. But it’s difficult to thrive on a sky ship when no-one trusts you to not blow a hole in the hull with your inconsistent ice-powers.

Meanwhile, engineering-savvy ATALANTA fits in like a well-oiled cog in a machine, even though being contained within a faulting sky ship with a bunch of strangers is the last place she wants to be.

But never mind navigating the skies, what about navigating this crew?

What is Captain Herakles’s problem? Her mood is as changeable as the weather, and she struts about like she owns the place (because, okay, maybe she does own the place!), but would it end all the worlds under the Seven Suns to let Jasyn and Atalanta spend time together?

When an unexpected detour lands them on an unknown world, they get everything they want, and more: Jasyn gets her chance at adventure, and Atalanta’s distrust for the skies is about to be allayed or realised.

The Sea of Stars is the second book in the Jasyn and The Astronauts series — a sapphic, swords & sorcery in space reimagining of Jason and the Golden Fleece — an adventure fuelled by wonder and good intentions, while navigating weather fronts formed of emotions along the way.

This book was a bit too slow for me. Too much innuendo, miscommunication, tension, and jealousy in one place and all on a very slow boil.

Since taking off the space, the voyage has gotten off to a terrible start. Jasyn is given a cold should barge or verbal attack by every member of the crew. Atalanta seem to be more accepted, but both of them are kept apart. Is this a coincidence or by design? The crew seem to have split personalities on how they treat the two of them. There is some adventure towards the middle of the book, but the action is quite confusing, and changing perspectives on every page (in some cases paragraphs) does not help.

This book left me with more questions than answers. There are some developments towards the end of the book that I hope will come into play later. For the size of the I did not really get enough character development, and the surprises I saw coming, as they took so long to get to. I think they have been locked in together on a ship for long enough. I think it is time to have more answers about the crew and this universe in general.

What a ride! As life in space begins Jasyn is met with suspicion and hostility making life on the [C]Argo ship not the adventure she had expected it to be. When the ship is found to be off course and is forced to land on an unknown planet their journey takes an unexpected turn.

I really enjoyed the first instalment of this series and was lucky enough to be given an ARC copy for an honest review of this sequel and I can say it lived up to my expectations. A true adventure with lots of twists and turns that keep the pages being turned. Even if you are not familiar with Jason and golden fleece this is still a very well written tale that keeps you on your toes and is definitely worth your time to read.

Thank you Gwenhyver for the ARC opportunity I have thoroughly enjoyed Jasyn and Atalanta's adventure threw the stars and to other worlds.

Another great journey for Jasyn and Atalanta, the adventure continues in space when an unexpected detour lands them on an unknown world. Again couldn't put this book down either, it was nice to read from both Jasyn and Atalanta's POV. It's exciting and entertaining throughout, with some humour added in too.

I recommend this book if you're after a sapphic swords & sorcery space adventure! Don't forget to read book 1 first as this one follows on straight afterwards.

The book release date is November 7th so get ready for the next part of this epic adventure, stay tuned to Gwenhyver's social media though,l as there is more coming for this series, the adventure is far from over!

I cannot express how mad I am at the ending (no, not bad mad...like...the emotions are just too severe I have no words for it but MAD). Atalanta was so vulnerable in this book. I got to understand what’s going on in her head and then Jasyn...Jasyn...I---the end...I just...I am MAD. My friends definitely heard about my rants.

First of all, book 1 and book 2 are just 👏 They are amazing. I’ve been searching for this kind of book with Sapphic characters but I couldn’t find any and then these books literally fell from heaven. Second, one of the characters are deaf and speaks through sign language; I am just amazed how her emotions are being expressed without words. She mostly express herself through her eyes and body language and that’s very difficult to write. Next, the plot. It is very interesting. A lot is happening, many secrets, the mystery, stolen moments of the characters...all of these made me fall in love with the series. Lastly, the writing style caught my attention; the scenarios, the actions, fight scenes are written really got me hooked to continue reading the book.

Also, I have a love and hate relationship with one of the characters and I will be keeping an eye on her on book 3 😤

🌸 Recieved a copy from the author but all thoughts and opinions are my own

The narration was fluid and entertaining this time too, but I felt more need for editing this time and some choices for the progression of the plot were not for me as I am not fond of the miscommunication and denial of information as fundamental tools for the story. A lot of time invested in the oh!-what-do-they-mean-why-do-they-whatever-who-knows could be used to carve depth in the characters. It is ok not to have everything being a mystery or something. Just my two cents.

I am very curious about the story, so maybe I will picking up book 3.

4 stars. I confess I like the first one more. However, as is common in series, this book does set up for more- so perhaps that rating may change over time. I did really love seeing Atalanta’s perspective in this one!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily. 5 stars.

What did I just read? Like, holy shit what was that? I hate roller coasters, but this is like a thousand roller coasters combined and I fucking loved it. The amount of emotions this book just made me feel is unreal. I started a little shaky with it because everyone is such a fucking asshole for no good reason and I was getting so frustrated but then I realized I hadn’t looked up from the iPad in almost five hours and all I could think was “Gwenhyver, you sneaky shit 😂!”

(I had to make up for those hours by studying on a Sunday but honestly, totally worth it.)

I read somewhere that second books are usually crappy, be it because you have expectations for it or the author doesn’t try as hard, but there are two reasons I don’t say this one is better than the first, and the main one is because of how much I loved the first book. But… yeah, it’s THAT good.

Be prepared to be able to ship anyone of the crew with anyone and everyone except their siblings and the kid, because that right there is a clusterfuck of sultry looks and flirting and blushing that, even after rereading the sections twice, I’ve been unable to unravel completely.

My only complaint (and the second reason previously mentioned) about it is when it’s done with Atalanta or Jasyn, because… well, cheating. I hope it gets resolved and no cheating occurs because that’s a really hard nope from me and I’d hate to have to abandon this series.

Anyway, the writing continues to be on fucking fire, the storyline consistent (I did find one inconsistency but it kinda tests buried in the awesomeness so it’s fine) and the mystery continues to extend at the same time we figure past things out.

All in all 9.99/10, totally recommend!

Book 2 Starts from where book 1 left off, taking our adventurers on their biggest adventure yet, into the skies with a ragtag crew that you fall in love with on the search for the Golden Fleece to help save their planet. This is a sapphic retelling of Jason and the Argonauts.
The other crew members on the [C]ARGO ship become major players in this book and there is a good bit of character development throughout and chemistry amongst the crew. I really liked a few of the other characters and can’t wait to read more about them. Doctor Orpheus in particular stood out for me.
Atalanta and Jasyns relationship is developed more and we also get to see them more as individuals and learn a lot about Atalanta’s story.
I described the first story initially as Elsa meets Catniss and they fall in love, this one is basically Elsa and Catniss go to space to try and save the planet.
I absolutely loved it.
That ending… 😮 I need to know what happens next🤣
Off to read the short story UNCHARTED.

I’m so excited to continue this series! Book one didn’t get me hook line and sinker but book TWO absolutely has me in. I loved the dual POV, the introduction of such a great and broad cast of characters and such an engaging plot I just had to know more.

I really enjoyed the storyline of book two, I found it so easy to follow and it was just so action packed I just had to keep coming back to it. I loved the ability to see more of Atalanta, her story and her vulnerability in this book was so nice to see. I love her character so much.

I GASPED at the ending, and I can not wait to get into the third book!

I received an ARC copy of this novel from Booksirens, my review is completely voluntary.

**ARC Review** Thanks to Gwenhyver for the opportunity, this is my unbiased review.

Picking up seamlessly from where "Under the Ice Skies" left off, "The Sea of Stars" continues the adventure with gusto and whoa did it get good! The world building was exquisite, the imagery - fantastic, the character development - spot on and the pacing - just right. The continuation of Jasyn and Atalanta's relationship was wonderful and getting to hear Atalanta’s voice as narrator was an unexpected, but delightful, turn. I loved this book, and I'm very much looking forward to the next installment in the series!

I knew as soon as I saw book 3 due date that I was going to regret reading book 2 this soon.

Same as book 1, a phenomenal read. Kept me on the edge all the time and I cannot wait to read book 3, especially with that cliffhanger that better have a GOOD explanation or otherwise I'll have words to say with a certain character!! I was honestly seeing red, especially because I bet that shit is going to hit the fan when a certain captain go through the overseers. I just know it!

The plot is thickening and thickening and again I cannot wait to see how everything will unfold, especially with that person with many eye colours doing her thing.

I love this series! Where book 1 was all about discovering Iolcus and Jasyn and Atalanta sorting themselves out, this one takes us straight to adventure, with spaceship shenanigans, odd flirting all round and a brand new and scary planet.
If you haven't grabbed these books yet what are you even doing?

Sadly this second book wasn't much better than the first one, it was more or less at the same level, it improved some small things, it made worse other things.

First and foremost I feel the need to reiterate that I feel the relationship between Jasyn and Atalanta is told more than shown, and that it feels their relationship at this point is mostly because they have always been together than because of a real exploration of one another and a true interest in one another. Their chemistry was somewhat there in the first book but in this one it's just not there for me. Sure, there are some nice descriptions of one another from their own perspectives (especially from Atalanta's POV) but they're once again telling and not showing and they barely spend any time together during the book.
Overall though, their relationship is still ok generally, not the worst but I would want A LOT more. I guess it doesn't help that I'm not exactly a fan of Jasyn so far, some of her personality rubs me a bit the wrong way. Atalanta on the other hand is a cinnamon bun and must be protected at all costs.

Now, the biggest issues this book has for me are the general plot and the rest of characters. While reading this second book and retroactively remembering the first one I realised that something that bugs me about this series is the sense of watching a plain TV series where everything is left for the last couple of episodes and the plot is stretched to no end. These two books feel like I read an episode in each book and I'm nowhere near finding out any single detail about anything. I'm denied any breadcrumbs of information because they need to be kept for the later episodes at the end of the series. I don't like TV series that do this, so I don't like books that do this either.
Another element that I don't like in any media is the plot device of dreams or lives that are not real, any plot device of this style that resets the whole thing once you're out of whatever put you in that state. Star Trek has episodes like that, and they were generally the most boring ones for me (except perhaps for "The Inner Light" in TNG). It's not different here. About one third of the book it's about what that planet does to them, and there are too many chapters of narration of their "dream" state. It was not difficult to guess what was happening after one paragraph, so the rest just becomes padding, pretty padding, but padding nonetheless. Having one chapter, a few paragraphs, fine, but stretching this so much when it means nothing to nothing it's just nonsensical. I think there are ways a dream state can serve the main plot, here even if they had all somehow shared parts of the overall dream it would have been more engaging, because there are social consequences to their actions in the dream for example, something that causes nuance among them once they're back in the real world.

On the other hand, the rest of characters apart from the main two are still kept at a very superficial level and they're all very insufferable, especially in the manner they treat Jasyn. It becomes tedious to read about what so far are very unidimensional characters that simply seem to dislike Jasyn because she is related to we-know-who even though she learnt of this like two days prior. So their overall attitude is extremely childish and lacks a lot of nuance that they simply don't care to learn.

Shaking the relationship dynamics towards the end was probably the most interesting part, if it wasn't because and because if the intention is just conflict is a bit cliché and annoying, if the intention is that actually the story , then it could be an interesting development. And yet, the other characters are so underdeveloped that you can't really get invested in romantic dynamics of any kind with any of the others. I feel in this second book we only got to know a bit more of the Ice Princess, but no one listens to what she has to say and she's also treated badly so it's not much either. She got no fair trial and considering that the readers don't know her personally and only through other character's words more than anything, their hate towards her feels somewhat unjustified. She's not this big evil enemy they defeated, she appeared for like 5 seconds in the first book and 30 seconds in the second book.

If the dates here are correct, both the first book and second one were published in 2023, meaning that it's been (to the date of this review) two and a half years since this second one came out. Not sure when or if the next one will come out, and I think this is supposed to be a 5 book series? It can take a very long time if it actually does happen.
Considering the plot, characters and the lack of any questions to anything because they're not allowed and saved probably for the last couple of books in the series, and that who knows if the remaining 3 books will ever come out or when, I won't be continuing with this series most likely.
I think anyone thinking about starting it should keep their expectations quite low, and probably only start it when all the books are out (if they ever do), at least that way you won't be left with a million questions and a cliffhanger.

This book was the perfect sequel to Under the Ice Skies. I felt like it's clear that the writer has grown since the last book, which is amazing since the debut was an easy 5 star read for me.

I enjoyed the slow-pacing a lot!! It worked perfectly, since it allowed for a detailed and extremely interesting world-building. The tension felt natural, because the relationships between the characters developed slowly. Another thing I want to talk about concerning the writing is how memories are played out. There's very clearly a lot we don't know about every single one of the characters (Jasyn in a different way, since we know almost as much as she does of herself - which still leaves many open questions). However, the complexity of the characters, besides rendering them intriguing and relatable, confirms that there is a very interesting and well-thought-out story ready to be developed in the next books in this series. Indeed, there are hints all along both books - and knowing the myth that inspired the book won't make things clearer, which is, by itself, proof of the independence of Jasyn and the Astronauts from the original inspiration, without straying too far.

The characters seem, at first first glance, either Good or Bad. Gwenhyver doesn't allow this. There is compelling character growth, for both the apparently Good and Bad characters; the reader's feelings are just as mutable as the characters themselves. The plot twists make sure of that.

The sapphic romance and the queernormative world are some of the most lovable I've ever read. In particular, Jasyn and Atalanta have such a truly unique and beautiful relationship that every act of love manages to fill me with tears.

And even though I cry, I also laugh, because the characters are so snarky, the writing is funny, which really helps to make an intimidating book (I would call this book hard sci-fi, more than the first one) feel accessible and welcoming. The change from a more fantastical setting of Under the Ice Skies to a more sci-fi setting of The Sea of Stars is once again a great way to appeal to fantasy readers who would stray from sci-fi, but will be engaged in Jasyn and the Astronauts nonetheless. Or anyone who's new to sci-fi, overall.

I could talk about these books forever, since I feel they breach the "rules" set for both sci-fi, fantasy and myth inspired stories. It feels groundbreaking and yet provides a safe familiarity for those who find comfort in fantastical or sci-fi worlds. I would highly HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who likes adventure, queer characters, disabled characters, coziness, adorable animal companions, women with swords, a quirky set of people, sarcastic baddies and a new comfort read.

Continuing the sapphic space adventure from Book 1 (Under the Ice Skies), Gwenhyver leaves little time for rest. We are thrust into space with a group of new characters, nearly all of whom despise (or barely tolerate) Jasyn's presence. Interestingly, we are now presented with Atalanta's POV, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The language is once again beautifully presented, and the tension is quite nearly palpable as a reader.

In this installment, the crew is unexpectedly detoured to a mysterious and unknown planet. As they adventure out into the mist, they encounter dangerous native vegetation and wildlife, before they somehow get everything they ever wanted. But not everything is at it seems, and Jasyn and Atalanta both struggle with discerning fantasy from reality.

I will say that this story is almost too full. As mentioned in my review of Under the Ice Skies, there are moments of respite, but they are few and far between, and with this book there seems to be even fewer and further between. I barely have time to breathe and collect my thoughts—I can only assume this is the author's intention. Additionally, the amount of sexual tension being described or perceived by either Jasyn or Atalanta regarding the rest of the crew is bordering on the implausible. I felt myself sighing or rolling my eyes at the number of times Jasyn wondered if she was being flirted with, or when Herakles' muscles were the focus of the moment.

Although, seeing the Ice Princess outside of the arena is refreshing, and I am eager to see how her character arc progresses.

All in all, I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to those who enjoy Greek literature/mythology, sapphic romance, high stakes, and non-stop action. And space. And deer.

Thank you to Gwenhyver and BookSirens for the free advanced copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I did enjoy this book very much but not quite as much as the first one, mainly due to the pretty absurd amount of innuendos, flirtation and, admittedly less absurd but still upsetting, bullying. All the so-called adults in their twenties and thirties acted like a bunch of hormonal, petty adolescents. The only actual teen acted better than them, though he was quite absent in this book, sadly.

Now that that's out of the way, I can focus on the rest of the book and the rest was really good. The writing was as gorgeous and immersive as in the first book, the plot was quite gripping and the world got even more interesting than in Under the Ice Skies. And Atlanta's pov was a delight! I hadn't known just how much she could actually hear. The romance between her and Jasyn was also great and they finally managed to communicate more (though it took them a while). Dr. Orpheus continued being my favourite secondary character with her "grumpy exterior hides a marshmallow centre". I can't wait to learn more about her backstory. But I'm afraid that the rest of the secondary characters were either quite absent or too busy flirting, flexing or being mean to actually display some character development or reveal some of their histories/motivations/goals etc.

Oh well, apparently I wasn't quite as done as I'd thought. But that just shows how much I liked the rest of the book. If those things I mentioned get toned down in the sequels and everyone remembers that friendships do exist and are perfectly valid relationships then I'm certain that I'm going to adore the rest of the series.

THE SEA OF STARS is book 2 of Gwenhyver's epic sapphic sci-fantasy romance series, picking up where book 1 left off. It is a wildly fun, occasionally VERY TENSE, absolutely delightful rollercoaster from start to finish. Gwenhyver's excellent writing goes from strength to strength, with gorgeous world-building descriptions, sparkling wit, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments sweeping you through the narrative. The plotting is deft and clever; there will be moments where you have absolutely no idea what is going on, and that is JUST FINE. Go with it, and you will be rewarded when everything suddenly falls into place in extremely satisfying ways.

My very favourite thing about book 2 was getting to know the brilliant cast of supporting characters in all of their grumpiness, messiness, snark, and super-hot-waistcoat-wearing glory. Also, ALL OF THE SEXUAL TENSION in EVERY POSSIBLE DIRECTION. So many hot characters! So much awkward eye contact and accidental maybe-on-purpose flirting! It is SO MUCH FUN. I absolutely flew through this book, and I am eagerly awaiting book 3 so I can continue shipping literally everyone with everyone else and revelling in the stunning world Gwenhyver has created.

Book two of Jasyn and the Astronauts: The Sea of Stars is an excellent continuation of the journey to saving Icolus and stopping the Ice King.

We see more characters in this one, all with their vast range of personalities. Some I didn't like, some I wanted to push out of their lock, and some I was like what the heck is happening here?

Of course, there were sapphic, swords, space shenanigans, and drama. There were moments where I was at the edge of my seat, confused because I was like what in the world, but then everything gets made clear and you're like ohhhhhh. It made the story perfect and set it up well for book three.

I can't say much more, considering it's always hard to write reviews about an ongoing series, but if you like adventure, space, queers in space, drama, tension, ice magic and journies to saving the world, then this book/series is for you.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

There was so many interesting and unique aspects to this novel that kept me intrigued. I loved learning more about Atalanta and her history. She very quickly became my favorite character now that we had a peek inside her head.

I felt like I was on this trip into space along with Jasyn and the crew. However, I wish we had gotten to learn more about the rest of the crew. I felt like we only got a very limited view of what happened on the first leg of this trip.

I am very interested to see how this story progresses and can’t wait for the next installment.

The second instalment of the saga continues, our hero’s fresh from their escape travelling through the stars and come to an unfortunate stop on a strange mind bending planet. I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first, felt rather slow until around 40% and many characters felt unexplored with a tension throughout that does not go anywhere. Maybe this is explored in a further book also our two main characters spend more time apart then together here, still enjoyable in places but would like to see a bit more character development and some answers even if hinted!

In this installment, we got to know some of the other characters -- learning their personalities, motivations, Etc. I like a good action filled novel, but if the characters are unlikeable, or don’t have something interesting about them, I can't get into the book. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next, for sure.

I really liked this book. I’m a science girlie, if you don’t know (Hi, nice to meet you <3) my masters is in Physics Engineering and I do love some space themed story. The way their routines at the ship work did fascinate me! I loved reading about this world and I’m so godamm curious to see where they end up innn!!! Atalanta and Jasyn are just the cutest, I love them as well. Not going to lie, there are a lot of characters dropping in the end of the last book and I felt kinda overwhelmed at the beginning of this one because of that, so I guess the answer is reading the first two again before the third :)) To end my review. There is a certain chapter. It was never-ending. The chapter and my confusion. But guys, IT WAS ON PURPOSE, I was not understanding a bloody thing, but so weren’t them and I was seeing it, feeling it and never felt so compelled to read while so massively confused. If you like some spacey stories yourself, or myth inspired ones, give this series a go, you won’t regret it.

I enjoyed this one almost as much as I enjoyed the first one.

Breaking free from Jasyn's singular narration, in this sequel we've got dual narratives, Jasyn and Atalanta. It was really nice to have Alatanta de-mystified, as we only saw her as a defining character in through Jasyn's lovelorn eyes in the prior book. Despite how in love the pair are, being on a ship of fit, an added level of tension with the addition of Jasyn's increasing hallucinations of a beautiful witch and a whole crew of fit gladiators.

The author adeptly handles the expanded crew, the new characters were bright and vibrant, their personalities playing off each other in fun ways. I particularly like the doctor.
