“U: Journey to Yourself” by T.D. Roberson begins when the protagonist Drew is at the hospital because his grandmother is passing. Family members surround him, yet he feels totally alone. He is broke and going through an existential crisis. While at the hospital, he suffers an emotional breakdown. Drew thinks he is hallucinating when he discovers himself somewhere up in the clouds.
He starts revisiting different periods in his life. They seem so real, but he must assume he is hallucinating. He flashes through the difficult times, including those in his childhood. He sees when he is rich and famous and being taken advantage of by his family. Then he sees himself as he is now, broke, about to be homeless and hungry. Each time frame leads into another. It is painful for him to review. Things start becoming clearer when he is visited by two beings from the future. He discovers that they are directing this experience, and they will give him a glimpse into two futures, but in the end, he must ultimately make a final decision as to which path he will follow.
T.D. Roberson did an amazing job creating such a unique story. He takes us into the protagonist’s heart so we can feel what he feels as he passes through different times in his life. This man who is reviewing his past choices, has been through so much to get to the point where he has nothing. Yet while he was losing everything, he was gaining wisdom. Being able to face his mistakes and learn from them ensures that he will not make them again.
He also reflects a lot on his relationships with friends, family, and lovers. His grandma and grandfather were flawed people, yet they still had a tremendous impact on Drew’s life. As I read about them, I kept thinking that they were “perfectly imperfect.” As Drew revisits them, he gains more understanding about why they acted as they did, whether it was good or bad. Readers have a front-row seat as Drew makes a choice about his future path. It made me wish that there would be a future story where readers can see if it was the correct choice. It was thought-provoking in that it made me wonder what choices I would make if I had a do-over. My life is good, but it wasn’t easy getting to this point!
Ironically, I just posted some old photos on social media. This ignited a discussion among my friends about how we wished we could go back and make different choices, especially with the knowledge we have now. Some decided that they probably wouldn’t have listened. I thought about that discussion while I read this. Even though this is a work of science fiction, it resonated strongly with me.
I highly recommend “U: Journey to Yourself” by T.D. Roberson to readers who are looking for a science fiction novel that is poignant and thought-provoking. Readers who like stories that are gritty and raw, yet still insightful will love this novel.
