Wedding magic...and murder? Winifred/Fred is busy, busy, busy trying to ensure that Katie's wedding is perfect, hippo theme and all. No one anticipated that Katie would arrive home only a few evenings before the wedding to find a dead body in her home. Even worse, it's the murderous ex-wife of the man Katie is about to marry, Joe. Peg, with the help of a prison guard, had escaped and somehow, perhaps while laying in wait for Katie, died. Toss in the complications of a real crime investigator in town, who happens to be invited to the wedding, that seems addicted to filming everything, and the whole wedding scenario is askew. Fred to the rescue? Maybe? I have to admit, at times Fred seems close to losing it, allowing her past and related fears to catch up to her to the point where almost everyone seems to not just become a suspect but a part of some giant conspiracy. Call that therapist, Fred!

I won't detail the plot (check the blurb) but that is just the beginning. Fred's relationship with some of the town's citizens seems to be either great or horrible, maybe because over the series Fred has annoyed, er, talked to and practically accused some of being murders. Seems there are many secrets in town. When Fred shows up at doors, unfortunately, she's either met with a deep sigh of resignation or anger. Never mind she only has days to help Susan, chief of police, solve the crime so the wedding can happen. Seems Joe is a suspect! . Loyal readers, you'll get some insight into what makes Susan tick amidst the drama. Heck, actually you'll get a good look at some of the characters' lives, both good and bad. I do so love that Susan has been not just resigned but reluctantly seems to enjoy encountering Fred's cranky corgi, Watson, known to Susan as Sgt. Fleabag. She even keeps treats, the magic word as far as Watson is concerned, handy.

In any case, while you'll appreciate the story and relationships far more if you've read previous books in the series, this one works fine as a standalone. Lots of dog antics, including cranky Watson doing his amazing job of switching gears to help calm and soothe as needed. Dogs know. They always know. You'll love the human characters, too, from Fred's ol' hippie step-father and, flamboyant uncle, tplus Anna, who's almost as grumpy as Watson and full of gossip and wild theories, as well as Paulie, owner of two maniac corgis that make Watson seem reserved, and... and ... and....well, even the bad guys have their moments. Well, maybe not Peg. Bottom line, a fun read full of twists and turns, Fred's churning mind, cute dogs, romance, a wedding, and, oh, my, what sounds like a delicious recipe for "Nick's Red Raspberry Cake" at the end. Toss in that wonderful, perfect cover design (credited to AJ Corza by the author) and this one is a winner.

Will Katie and Joe Make It To The Alter?

"Bamboozled Brides" is Book 32 of the Cozy Corgi Mystery series, written by Mildred Abbott. I simply adore this series and every one of the main characters: Winifred (Fred), her husband Leo, her best friend Katie, Katie's fiance Joe, the Pacheco twins (Ben and Nick), Nick's girlfriend Serena, Anna and Carl, Athena Rose, Delilah, and Chief of Police Susan Green, as well as Campbell the Deputy and the new police deputy Halifax. However, as always, my favorite character is our grumpy corgi mascot Watson, as well as all the other dogs in this series. This episode is about Katie and Joe's upcoming wedding, and the murder of Joe's ex-wife Peg Singer (a murderer), who escapes from prison with plans to kill Katie and frame Joe. Also, Nick's ex-girlfriend Lavender is back in Estes Falls to attend Katie's wedding, as well as continue her documentary about Katie's serial killer mom and who have been in prison for many years. Katie invited her to the wedding, but Lavender is interviewing everybody in town about the fact that Katie and Joe each have killers in their past. She's also hinting to towns-members that maybe Katie or Joe killed Peg Singer. Can Fred, Watson, and Susan figure out who really killed Peg before the wedding day? As I mentioned above, I love every book in this series, and I gave this episode, as well as the entire series, a big fat 5-star rating. I look forward to Book 33.

Love this series

While waiting for the next book to come out I got into another series to fill my time. I saw that Cozy Corgis #33 was on Unlimited and thought, finally. I started reading it and couldn't figure out when Katie and Joe had gotten married, then discovered I had missed a whole installment. I don't know how this slipped through the cracks..... Anyway, it didn't disappoint. Lots of twists and turns, beautiful descriptions and a crazy person or two thrown in the mix. I grew up about an hour from Estes Park, so these books bring me back to the Colorado Rockies each time. I try to go to Estes for at least one day, and picture Fred and her chunky pooch ambling down the main street of the town keeping vs wary eye on the elk.

I do wish I could find out this one thing about Fred. Can she only cook grilled cheese and tomato soup? )With the exception of the chicken she cooks up for Watson.) It seems that soup and sandwich combo is all they eat unless someone else brings food over.

I also get a kick out of the recipes at the back and have actually tried a couple. This cake recipe sounds awesome, except for the icing. I just can't picture icing made only of thawed raspberries, butter and shortening.

Editing and Proofreading

FIRST, these are mostly terrific books and all are well worth the read. The characters are well thought out and become like old friends.

Unfortunately, the proofreading/editing is slipping. The characters are not quite as they should be and the storyline is slipping some. It seems obvious the author is, or appears to be, becoming a little tired of writing this series and perhaps does not quite know how to close it out.

The editing is getting worse --- perhaps that is because she is using Millennials, Snowflakes and Generation Z'ers who have been indoctrinated and not educated to do her editing. Also, I have always found the gratuitous inclusion of far left ideologies more than a little off-putting, AND, it adds nothing to the value of the story line or the characters!!!

WEDDING WEEK

It's just a few days before Katie & Joe's wedding & Fred is trying to make sure everything is in place! The baker for the wedding cake can't do it so Nick is stepping up to make it! The golden Aspen leaves are beautiful! Katie tells Fred there can be no murders at her wedding! Fred says she will not allow it!

After Katie heads home to get ready for the Rehearsal Dinner, she calls Fred in hysterics! When she got home & walked into the bedroom, Joe's ex-wife, Peg, is on the floor dead! Fred calls Susan & heads to Katie's! Will this stop the much anticipated Wedding for Joe & Katie? How did Peg get out of prison & why is she in Katie & Joe's house? So many twists & turns as Fred & Susan try to find the killer before the wedding so Katie & Joe can leave on their honeymoon!

Hard to put down

Another wonderful Fred and Watson mystery that is hard to put down till you have read it all. I love the ins and outs of all the characters as you learn at a wonderful pace who really committed the murder. The descriptions of Katie and Joe’s dream wedding with hippos and beautiful colors was appreciated. Made me feel I was present at the wedding too. You will want to read all of this mystery as fast as you can. Be sure and read all 32 books in order to understand character development. Love this series so much and I look forward to #33 in June, 2024.

Another Intriguing Mystery!

This author never disappoints. Good mystery, fun characters--where else would you find a bride wearing a garter with a hippo on it? But, will the bride actually get married since her fiance is a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife? A grumpy corgi, a bookstore-owning maid of honor who's a sleuth, a cute park ranger, a by-the-book cop, and more somewhat kooky characters, all living in Estes Park. And--an above-the-bookstore coffee shop! Recipe included!

Not one of my favorite Cozy Corgi books but still really good.

This one had a little too much wedding hysteria for my taste. Katie was too over-emotional, Joe was too over-emotional, and it was hard to read due to that. I just wanted them to stop getting hysterical or angry and go with the flow.

The mystery behind it all was what kept me going. The dude who writes as Mildred Abbott is great at giving us a mystery with twists! Characters can be hit or miss.

Looking forward to the next book with no more wedding themes!

Fabulous series continues

With Katie’s wedding, murder, mayhem, and delightful corgi humor continues. Although all kinds of melodrama dogs Katie’s wedding, her best friend, Fred, and Watson, Fred’s grumpy but beloved corgi attempt to keep things running smoothly so, of course, the best laid plans do go awry and Fred is on the case along with family and friends to help. Great story!

WEDDING BELLS!!!

I totally did a girly geek-out with all the wedding details mixed in with the mystery and its resulting tension - and I don't like weddings. LOL I do love when characters get a happy ending. The way the happy details were woven in with the murder and investigation was superb. I loved this book.

A really fun series of mystery books that may give subtle hints but never fail to surprise at the conclusion.
The recipe’s at book end are a bonus.
