PALADIN #1

Whistleblower

Rate this book
Eden:

Where I come from, there’s no forgiveness for a whistleblower, even if I saved countless lives. Unemployed, with a wrecked reputation, my only option is a pity job as a leadership consultant for a secret, government-employed team of assassins.

After moving clear across the country, I thought I’d feel safe from the ones who want revenge for my so-called valor, but then I meet him. Linc. The ghost in the shadows, who will never be seen for the hero he is.

I should probably be intimidated by the most lethal assassin PALADIN employs, except the monster has the kindest eyes when he's looking at me. Still, the question remains of who I should fear more…

The ones who are after me or the ones who promised to protect me.

Linc:

I love the way she screams my name, but I like how she whispers it too.

I vowed to never get attached, but Eden has a hold on me that no one has before. She’s the light and until her, I didn’t realize how lonely the darkness is.

Forget PALADIN’s rules. I refuse to let her go. I’ve finally found what’s precious to me and now I have to keep her close, defend her fiercely. She’s mine to pleasure and protect.

And whoever keeps threatening Eden’s life, is going to lose theirs.

I didn't know what to expect from this book, but it honestly was such an incredible surprise. I was hooked from the first page, and I could not wait to unveil everything little bit of detail Kay would grant us.

I loved it and I seriously think everyone should give it a chance. There is a lot that goes on in this book and I was never bored once.

Eden is the whistleblower for her company when she finds information regarding their plans etc. and goes to the FBI with it all. Sadly, rather than being seen as a hero for destroying the terroristic plots, she is seen as a destroyer of people’s lives (the employees). The FBI didn't reveal everything to the world, and this pushes her to lose her jobs, any potential jobs and reputation.

Linc is recruited by Vesper when he is 16 years old and given a chance at life outside his own and helping the world be a better place - all by becoming an assassin (who ends up having a count of 1183 assassinations). Paladin is not a part of any government, but it is its own entity until they no longer can be alone and start working with the FBI.

Enter Eden who is hired to be the HR person and help with the combination etc.

Eden and Linc both fall for each other really quickly; they have amazing chemistry and they also connected on deeper levels. They come to truly care for one another and despite the initial hiccups they get through it all. We do not get a third act breakup at all and honestly I was shocked because they had the perfect reason to, and I was just waiting for it.

We also meet a few more side characters and two specific ones whose book is next is Cricket and Lance. During the entire book it was a will they/wont they situation and I'm glad it's happening!

The reveal on who was behind the initial plot that Eden found out about from her former company was insane. I knew something fishy was going on, but I didn't know how someone could be so delusional and brilliant in their plotting but thankfully they were able to get the truth.

If you finish this book PLEASE PLEASE read the 3 year later extra scene Kay Cove has available - it will leave you completely in an emotional mess for a few reasons:
1) Vesper is nowhere to be found and it is presumed she is dead from the way the characters talk about her
2) Eden/Linc are pregnant and married
3) Eden has officially taken over the Paladin corporation (they are not with the FBI anymore) since Vesper is not around
4) The guy who Eden interrogated in the main book is back and requesting to be a part of the Paladin group.

I tried to just skim through to at least finish it, but I could not. The book started off really good, but then everything starting making 0 sense and I ended up dreading picking it up. Let me explain:

1. Linc is supposed to be a morally grey assassin ... morally grey where? Bro is a cinnamon roll, I was actually getting so bored during his chapters.
2. Both Eden & Linc are supposed to have such trouble trusting others due to past experiences, but then somehow they trust each other immediately. It was very Insta lovey and not in a good way.
3. The side characters were so boring. They had no depth at all and felt like stick figures in the narrative, pointless.
4. The spicy scenes, what even were those? I thought this was marketed as a dark romance, but yet they both talk like they are teenagers fumbling in the dark. And I get the realism of some scenes, but she tells him she needs him take control and then he reverses it? Weird

So yeah, this book is very obviously not for me. I will not be reading the next one when it comes out. Now I have heard AMAZING things about Camera Shy by this author so I will be checking that one out, because it seems like this is a really good author, but this just wasn't their genre imo.

Happy reading babes and don't come for me lol

I love Kay Cove. Admittedly, I loved Camera Shy a bit more, but in this she executes merging thriller and romance really well. I love when characters have relatively rough exteriors and the author really humanizes them.

I think the narrators kinda killed this one for me, unfortunately. I kept trying to think if I had been reading it if it would’ve been different but honestly I never once felt chemistry between the main characters.

In the beginning, I was very interested in the plot and wanted a little bit MORE from it than I was given. The ending was good and unexpected which I enjoyed but it just didn’t save it for me.

Overall I’d say 3.5 stars

Highly addicting, the perfect romantic suspense.

Every time I read a Kay Cove book, I get so wrapped up in the story and before I know it I'm at the last page.

The writing is amazing, and I loved the story, characters, plot twists and romance. An assassin who k*lls the monsters of the world but is soft for her? Yes please.

I really love romantic suspense because of the mix of being on the edge of your seat/ action and exciting plot mixed with high stakes romance- this was a perfect mix of the two.

I know im a hater but literally ANYONE would’ve been a more interesting main character than Eden. Her very much self proclaimed morality and “good-person” ism was so annoying towards the end.
“The world needs more people like me.” Who tf says that 😭😭 and all she did was not kill anyone. Give the girl the Nobel prize she’s clearly gagging for.
She was so boring.

“You have to be careful, Eden, because you’re responsible for both of our lives now. Do you understand? I can’t live without you.”

Eden Abbot, a whistleblower, finds herself offered a job as a leadership consultant for a secret government team of operatives. But when she meets Linc, one of the deadliest assassins, her life takes a dramatic turn. Despite the darkness of his world, Linc is drawn to Eden, and the question remains: who should she fear more – her pursuers or her protectors?

“Oddly enough, I feel quite safe around him. I just don’t feel morally safe around what he does.”

Linc's life as an assassin was solitary until he met Eden. Her light pierced his darkness, prompting him to break Paladin's rules. They share an undeniable connection, even though their paths seem incompatible. Linc's transformation from a lone assassin to a caring boyfriend is beautifully portrayed, as is Eden's resilience in the face of adversity.

“I’m happy to handle you with care because you’re precious.”

It's important to note that this book offers steamy moments that are top-tier. Linc, with his beguiling charisma and his exceptionally filthy mouth, knows exactly how to ignite passion in their relationship. Their intimate encounters are nothing short of breathtaking. Their passionate and tender moments, combined with suspenseful storytelling, make this book a compelling read.

“Linc?” “Yes?” “Am I safe with you?”
“Of course you are.”
“You’d never hurt me,” she says, not asks. “Never.”
“Then right here, right now, I want you to kiss me like I’m precious, but f*ck me like I’m not.”

Kay Cove's ability to blend the spicy with the sweet creates a captivating and unforgettable love story. Linc's filthy mouth contrasts perfectly with his thoughtful and protective side, and their chemistry is sizzling. The suspense element is expertly developed, and character growth is evident, particularly in Linc's evolution from a lone wolf to a devoted partner and Eden's strength in the face of adversity. This opposites-attract story is a fantastic start to the series, and I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment featuring Lance and Cricket. Bravo, Kay Cove! 🔥📚💑

Whistleblower (Muhbir).

Ekibi Paladin,a almasıyla kurtulur.

The perfect combination between, a dark setting, soft characters, harsh environment, inevitable love all wrapped in a necessary evil ❤️.....
I loved Linc and Eden and the way Kay Cove portrayed them . Different yet each other's missing puzzle piece .
The ying to his yang
, The light to his darkness, the breath of his lungs. I'm in a complete awe .
And Eden was his BAD GIRL. she was only bad for him , and only him because throughout the book, eden went through things that could have made her spiteful and bitter ( as one should 👀) but she refused to. And this may sound unreasonable to fixate on, in a Romance but this was my favorite part. She didn't let her circumstances effect her view of life.
It was just wholesome.
“ “𝐈’𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥, 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝…𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞...𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮....𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧. 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮.”....

Linc on the other hand. How Do I put it??? 🤔🤔
He definitely let his circumstances change the course of life but deep down he was still the same lost kid and the way Eden slowly but surely became his home, safe haven and JUST HIS . His game changer.
The exception to the rule. Was the absolute most swooning thing EVER.
I MEAN THE GUY WENT UNDER THE 🔪 TO MAKE SURE HE CAN GIVE HER THE KIDS HE DIDN'T KNOW HE WANTED . , UNTIL HER, WITH HER . ( A spoiler ?? Let's just call it a treat/thirst-trap 🤭🤫)....
This is more than just a ROMANCE.
You get the suspense , the action and all the bang bang 🔫💥🧨🍆 🍑 both kinds 😁😁😁.
I highly recommend . It was a blast reading this. And please don't let me start with how EXCITED I'm for the upcoming books in this series . Because Operation Paladin has more members, therefore more books for each 💗💗. More for us. 💗

I was sent the ARC for this and OMG I ate it up!
He is an assassin, a monster that unalives the more evil monsters. He is part of an unground group called PALADIN. They’re ghosts, they’re invisible, and now they’re under the FBIs thumb.
She has been threatened for the past year, she lost her job, her home, her entire life, all because she did what she thought was right. She became a whistleblower. When she came across some bad SH*T and took it to the FBI. Now after all this time, they want to hire her.
•Opposites attract
•Work place romance
•Hot AF broody assassin
•Found family
•Great spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5
•Touch her and you die
•You’re mine now

Seriously, once I started this book and got into it, I didn’t want to stop. It was such a good read, I really liked the characters and their romance.

Um, I think I have a severe thing for assassins now 😫🤣 holy shit what a fun book! Around the 25% mark, it really picked up, and I couldn't put it down! I stayed up reading until 4:30 am in the morning!

The MMC is super protective and a total badass at his job. And I totally loved the FMC and thought she was super smart and entertaining!

Overall, it totally sucked me in, and I can't WAIT for the next book in the series. I'm excited to see what couple it follows next!!

This was such a cool concept. I loved the plot and just the overall dynamic of the FBI/Whistleblower relationship. It was even cooler to find out the author herself has extensive knowledge on the inner workings of HR. That definitely made the story flow more smoothly. It made sense and she executed the explantion of this profession in the novel really well.

I wanted to like this book so much. I am not a fan of insta-love. I mean sometimes I am when the male maintains his domineering energy lol. What can I say. However, this one didn't hit too much for me. I wish we would have seen the FBI agent more active in the field. Maybe the lack of that was why I couldn't really click with the story. Anyways, it was still a cool concept and plot.

Not sure I would have picked this up if it wasn’t for the fact that it was chosen for my bookclub this month. The whistleblower plot just wasn’t interesting to me. I felt like the side characters really made the story more enjoyable as I didn’t particularly care for the main characters. I found Eden to be uninteresting & a lot of her actions were cringey & unrealistic. Linc was hot but the chemistry between them was just not there. This was a quick & decent read but nothing I was dying to finish.

I really enjoyed reading this and I really enjoyed the characters - especially the side characters.

The plot was fun and I was invested.

But as much as I enjoyed this, a few things were missing for me. We'll get to that later.

But first, characters.

Eden was a great character. I love that she's this average, normal person, who somehow finds herself in the mist of all this chaos and looking over her shoulder. She's kind and caring and wants to do the right thing. She's coming back from a year of brutal harassment because SHE DID THE RIGHT THING. Someone has taken a chance on her, given her a job, and a place to stay. They've given her a second chance and I loved that for her.

I just really loved her character and thought she was really what PALADIN needed. I do wish we had more team meetings because that was cute and I really enjoyed that scene.

Linc is your bad boy who k!lls the bad guys. He's protective and under the tough exterior, has a good heart. For someone who is labeled as terrifying and scares everyone, I don't know, his first impressions with Eden were quite the opposite. I loved him for it.

Together, they had sweet banter and I really enjoyed their playful conversations. I did feel a little insta-lust/love happening which is a turn off for me. Luckily, I looked past a lot of it and still enjoyed their story. Things felt a little fast between them, hence why I had to knock down the rating. I just wanted more relationship development but happening slower.

I almost wish we had more tension and more of a slow burn because it would have made their first ~moment~ even better.

They did communication well, for the most part, and I really appreciate that.

The spice was good. But again, I just wish they went a little slower.

The side characters are pretty much perfection and we really needed more. Especially with Cricket and Lance. I can't wait for their story because YOU KNOW there's something brewing there. I did like Vesper and wish we got more moments with her and Eden. I really thought there was going to be a plot twist there...but guess not.

I didn't hate Callen and I actually started to enjoy his character. I feel like he disappeared in the epilogue but okay. I'm sure he'll be back.

I feel like this was a good start to this series. I just wish we had more intense moments or even more plot twists. I felt the suspense but not until like 70% in. I wanted more intensity with the "what's gonna happen?!" But again, a great start.

I enjoyed the epilogue and the bonus epilogue. I think Linc and Eden are really a good match and I really loved getting to see their love story unfold.

My first Kay Cove book and wow, where has she been all my life?! I devoured this story.

A lethal team of assassins is suddenly forced to collaborate with the FBI, and let’s just say…they do not play well with others 🤪. Enter Eden exactly the bridge they never knew they needed.

After exposing a company’s shady dealings, Eden’s world falls apart. She’s branded a whistleblower, threatened, fired, abandoned by her friends, and left with no support or stability. Then Callen from the FBI offers her a lifeline: a job using her expertise as a leadership consultant. That’s where she meets Linc one of the most bada$$ assassins on the team. And oh my goodness…this man is EVERYTHING. He’s immediately drawn to her innocence, her optimism, and her ability to disarm anyone with just her words.

But Paladin assassins live by strict rules: no marriage, no kids, no home, no attachments. They live in the shadows. Yet Eden makes Linc want more maybe even a future he never believed he could have. 🥹

The balance of romance and suspense? Spot on.
The spice? Chef’s kiss ( kinky 🤭).
And the audiobook narrators? Phenomenal.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series and fingers crossed we get more than just two books! 🤣

Whew! This was hot & heavy. To all my smutty lovers out there, this one’s a good one. I love a good momentum / build-up; it just kept getting better when it came to character development and the plot. I couldn’t stop reading and I kept wanting to know what’s next. I absolutely loved our MCs and secondary characters! There is a found family aspect that I always love! Lance and Cricket were done so well with the mystery surrounding them; they’re also hilarious! The chemistry between our MCs Linc and Eden were lava hot, especially during the banter. The spice was toe curling that would leave you fanning yourself.

I love how Eden is such an intelligent and confident character – she loves to take charge and be in control yet she’s also sensitive and is basically the humanizing factor for this group of assassins. That was the best part for me! Despite being in one of the lowest points in her life coz of blowback for being a whistleblower, she still manages to be the kind and considerate person that she is despite being treated poorly for doing the right thing. She’s very communicative and isn’t afraid to voice out what she likes in all aspects of her life. She is badass in her own way using her intelligence instead of force, as well as her “Kill them with Kindness” trait.

Linc is probably the most feared and lethal assassin the organization has, portraying how we love our morally grey characters, yet he is just the most observant and swoony guy! I mean don’t get me wrong – he is filthy in all the right ways yet how he is when it comes to Eden is so out of this world. Thank You Kay for creating a communicative man – jeez, he’s pretty much perfection in this book. I love how he is confident enough to ask questions and learn how to be the man he should in a relationship. And let’s not forget the “Touch Her and Die” disposition that he has.

I already have a feeling the next book is going to be even better. I am looking forward to it!

Eden was a whistleblower to a company she took from nothing and could have been everything until she came across pure corruption and had to do something to stop it before it took lives.
She said something. And it nearly destroyed her life. Definitely her reputation.
Jobless, friendless, and now in debt, she’s desperate for a job and got an offer to handle… off the record assassins. Dare we say the head of HR?

Linc has a headcount of above 1k. He’s an assassin 24/7. You don’t leave this job alive. You don’t get attached to anyone, don’t have relationships, kids, or anything.

“I’ve killed so many men who deserve to die, and yet this, almost, stranger sits in front of me, rocking the entire foundation of my existence. “

Eden takes the job and despite being really uncomfortable with their jobs, and weapons.. she’s such a beautiful character with a sweet soul. Sassy and hell and confident, Eden comes to terms with realizing she feels safe for the first time in a while.. in Linc’s arms.

“ How does a woman, who hates violence and guns, fall for a professional killer? “

Banter, steam, strong heroine, loyal hero, and suspense… it’s all there. We have great side characters with their own stories screaming at us and an HEA.

Loved this one! Definitely her spiciest one yet (and her most ‘dangerous’ one). It was the perfect balance of suspense/danger, romance, spice and that classic Kay Cove banter.

Linc (the MMC) fell first and became obsessed with Eden, which is normally not my favorite trope because it is usually paired with insta love. Although their relationship did move quite fast, I couldn’t help but love the story anyway. Linc was dangerous, sexy and thoughtful…Kay Cove always creates the perfect characters (and men). All I can do is read her books, fall in love with the MMCs and then be sad when the book is over and I realize there is no man in existence like Kay Cove’s men.

Overall, this was such a fun read. This was Kay’s first time writing romantic suspense and I am so excited to see what she does with the rest of this series (also, that bonus epilogue?? I NEED book two now).

This book was addicting!! I couldn't put it down. Every time I was working I was mad I couldn't read it because I was dying to know what was going to happen.

Turns out I have a thing for grumpy ruthless assassins who kill the bad guys but are softies for their girl. Oddly specific I know.... But Link was just sooooooooo perfect. I loved how sweet he was with Eden and never once made her feel bad about some of her feelings around his job and allowed her the space to process everything.

This book kept me turning page after page with the romance and suspense. Worth the read!!!

"I wouldn't just kill for you, Precious, I'd die for you too."

Is it possible for Eden, who's scared of guns and the whole gore-filled life, to fall in love with Linc, who's an assassin?

Eden is so strong. She has her moments where she absolutely loses it, but even after everything she goes through over and over, she's still precious, sweet, and strong. She keeps her walls up around everyone, but when she finds a family in PALADIN where Crickets is like a best friend, Vesper is somewhat of a mother, Lance is just Lance with his dirty jokes, and Linc is the man she never thought she'd fall in love with—everything changes.

"The killer has the kindest eyes when he looks at me"

Linc, I NEED ONE OF HIM, PLEASE. Please, he's so hot. He does these little things that make him so H O T removing his gun so Eden can't see it because she'd freak out if she did, remembering every detail about her. With his background, everyone assumes he must be violent, I mean, he is except with her. >>>> When I tell you the man turns into a teddy bear, I mean it.

Also, the bonus scene dropped bombshells that left my jaw hanging.

Book Name/Series: Whistleblower (PALDIN #1)
Author: Kay Cove
Standalone?: Can be read as a standalone, but includes characters from other books.

2 Stars

My Opinion: It took me a while to get through this book, because unfortunately it just couldn’t hold my attention for very long at a time. First, I didn’t love the writing. Some of the scenes, like the sex scenes for example, just felt awkward. Second, the story felt disjointed and there were several plot points/possible conflicts that were brought up, but then just abandoned: . Third, Linc and Eden’s relationship very rushed and I didn’t really feel their connection.

Hero: 3/5. Linc was okay for the most part. He was sweet to the heroine, but he was not what I had been expecting. I thought he would be cold, gruff and morally grey, and sure, he was possessive and protective of the heroine, but he was a cinnamon roll for the most part in my opinion.
Heroine: 2/5. I found the heroine to be all over the place and kind of annoying unfortunately. She was clearly supposed to be a very intelligent woman with an impressive background, but the constant explaining of what she did and achieved at her previous jobs just got to be a bit too much. I also really didn’t think her actions were always very smart: . She was also quite judgy when it came to what Linc and the others at PALADIN did and it felt like her sympathy/good heartedness got shoved down my throat a little too often.

I am a Kay Cove STAN now. I already was with Camera Shy, but this one was so good too that now I will read her grocery list. 🤭
Linc and Eden are to die for. Opposite attract, Hit Man, Touch her and Die! All the solid tropes.
The love between these two really felt genuine. And even though this was about hit men and secret FBI agencies, the author was able to make all of it make sense and seem real. I absolutely loved that about the writing in this.
Highly recommend this book and this author.

3.75 ⭐️

I really wanted to love this but it missed the mark in a couple areas— the writing was as compelling and fun as I remember but this story had quite a few very large holes/oversights.

The FMC, Eden, is helping build a team of 2 entities, but the book never mentions one of them— no names, barely a passing reference. Most of the time I forgot they were even supposed to be in the room. It was really weird to have an entire plot point glossed over like that and then brought up just once at the very end to help tie things together.

Also, our MMC was meant to be a morally dark grey, but he turned out to be more… morally beige at best. I guess I expected more from an vigilante assassin romance.

I did enjoy the book a lot, but all the great character development and story couldn't keep me from feeling like large chunks of information were missing

When the deadly assassin sends you a kissy face emoji 😘🤌🏽

Whistleblower by Kay Cove is a fast paced suspense romance.

I was hooked from the prologue. I do love a guy who hates everyone but her. Linc is basically a cinnamon roll and I loved how soft, sweet, and accepting he was to Eden. I do prefer more of a slow burn and this was definitely insta love. During the middle I was waiting for more of the mystery to be explored but that came right at the end. Overall I give it 3.5 ⭐️

🔪  Dual pov
☠️  Found familyworkplace romance
🔪Morally grey mmc
☠️Touch her and die
🔪Opposites attract
☠️ Hates every body but her

Some quotes I loved

"I'm not allowed to keep you...but now there's no f***ing way I can let you go:

"You be the light in this dark, depressing world. Let me be the big, bad wolf."

DNF this book. I loved the story line and plot but….the banter and smut was just not it for me. His character was described as scary and broody. He was none of those things. Was also suggested as dark romance and again this was not that. I mean maybe for someone else but this was very fluffy in my opinion. The smut was probably the worst part and the main reason for the DNF it was cringy and not in a trigger warning way. It just wasn’t good and the banter god it was sad even. Like it gave me second hand embarrassment for the fmc. Really wanted to love this cause the story honestly was very good. I feel like this is a horrid review but I do see potential for the writer and hope to try this author again.
