Now, I have to go back and re-read the prequel, Dead Reckoning!""Gripping suspense, high-stakes action, surprise twists, and tender romance – this thrilling tale has it all! Break out the popcorn, you won't be able to put it down!"
Cool, capable Caribbean skipper Parker Reese, hero of Dead Reckoning, returns. He's older but not wise enough to avoid trouble--especially if it comes in the form of a beautiful young woman, calling him to the perilous rescue of an old friend on Monserrat. The island, a tropical paradise, is being turned into hell by a series of volcanic eruptions, a process vividly described by Pennington. The novel's first half has something of the jittery but funny feeling of a tropical Alec Guinness Ealing comedy, with an ill-assorted gang of profiteers racing against the lava flow to empty a bank vault. The humor turns to suspense as we realize that the crooks' greed is matched by their ruthlessness. They're going to do terrible things to Parker's old friend if he doesn't come to the rescue in time. The climax, a gun fight in the ruins of a town half-burned, half buried in ash, is a thriller.
“Volcano Wind”, a sequel to “Dead Reckoning” is an exhilarating Caribbean mystery/thriller that enthralled me from start to finish.
Pennington demonstrates in-depth knowledge of Caribbean culture painting a vivid and authentic backdrop for this gripping tale.
The protagonist is a well-crafted hero whose skills and motivation propel the story forward. The supporting characters are equally compelling, each bringing unique strengths to the dangerous mission at hand. Together, they create a dynamic and engaging team that complement each other, adding depth and richness to the narrative.
“Volcano Wind” is a must-read novel for fans of action-packed adventures. The blend of suspense, detailed setting, and well-developed characters makes it a standout in the genre. Whether you’re a longtime fan of thrillers or new to the genre, this book promises to deliver an unforgettable reading experience.
