**MINISERIES PREMIERE** HACK/SLASH returns with an untold tale and critically acclaimed cartoonist **ZOE THOROGOOD** at the bloody helm! Slasher hunter Cassie Hack is only just getting used to her man-monster partner, Vlad, when she's drawn into a new case involving a murderous bunny mascot, dead kids, and an entire squad of maladjusted teenage serial-killer hunters! A completely new chapter in the beloved, long-running series that's perfect for new readers and old fans alike, just in time for Halloween.
Zoe Thorogood is an English cartoonist. While studying video game art at university, Thorogood began working as a freelance comic book artist. She achieved notoriety with her graphic novels The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott (2020, Avery Hill Publishing) and It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth (2022, Image Comics).
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but the future of graphic novels and comics are bright with Zoe Thorogood putting out such amazing work. After finding It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth to be one of the best books I read last year, I’ve found that everything she touches is gold. So I’ve been excited for Hack/Slash: Back to School and this first volume was worth the wait and holds a lot of promise for the series. We are treated to more of Thorogood’s signature art style with great character design, a cool mixed-media effect, and, of course, intense violence the set up is really cool. It’s a bit jumpy but plunged right into a plot that so far we’ve only had hinted at but apparently there are beings called Slashers and they need to be killed before they continue their murderous rampages. This first volume introduces a LOT of characters and a school for teen girls who have had a brush with death and are training to kill some Slashers (seems a bit like Something is Killing the Children in a way?). This was fun and I can’t wait for volume 2.
Read the Tim Seeley comics back in 2004 and loved the series! I absolutely love Zoe Thorogood fresh new spin on the comic series. I can’t wait to read more issues!
Been a fan of Tim Seeley's Hack/Slash comics for a good while now. It's always great seeing a new story on the way, but I was a little nervous about having someone else in charge. I perked a bit when I saw how enthusiastic Seeley was to have Zoe Thorogood taking over his baby. I felt better yet after seeing some of Thorogood's own posts leading up to the release. Now that I've read the first issue, it's all golden. The art is sharp & it promises some good clean, blood drenched fun for Casey & Vlad.

I am a huge Hack/Slash fan. I have met the creator Tim Seeley many times at comic cons; if you get the chance to met him at a comic con, do it. He is a really nice guy who has signed a bunch of my comics for free. After 5 huge Omnibuses and many, many stories the series came to an end.... until Hack/Slash: Resurrection. Not a fan and highly disappointed of the continuation by Tini Howard and art by Celor. So, when I saw that an official reboot was planned I was very skeptical.
The question is: was my skepticism justified ? I am happy to report No. The first issue of the new series takes the character Cassie into a new direction, but retains a similar feel of the original run.
The art is simple and not detailed with flat colors; usually not my favorite style. However, the art in this book has a certain charm that I like and works well with the story.
Recommended by a friend and first comic I have read panel to panel stlye on new streaming app GlobalComixs (rip comixology which went to shit after being bought by amazon) Liked some of the animation style choices and the training school was a cool concept but felt like filler eps and that ending came out of nowhere and felt a lil retcon so as to not messed with the original series timeline.
i assume everyone knows this but individual comic issues don't have a description on the back - i flipped through this one but didn't really pay attention. all this to say: LOTTA GORE. lots of it. i did not expect it. but other than that i enjoyed myself.
I jumped on this book because Zoe was attached to it. Knowing nothing about the first hack Slash series, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't need to do much digging! Super well written and drawn. Really love the characters so far. Super fun and super gross. Wonderful
Day 12 of my 31-in-31 challenge (abbreviating it for future ease). A fun introduction to a short comic series that still leaves a lot to be desired, but bumped up to 4/5 stars for Zoe Thorogood’s art alone. I’ll definitely get to issue #2 sometime down the line!
