BOOK DESCRIPTION Bernard Marks and Martha Alford met by chance. No real reason for it, just a series of fluky coincidences. The odds were long that they would hit it off. That wasn't in the cards they'd been dealt at birth. "It'll never last," people whispered after they got engaged. "Poor probability of success" was the general consensus when they married. But Bernie and Martha ignored the naysayers. Gamblers in love, they rolled the dice.
And then they worked hard, took even more risks, caught a few lucky breaks, built satisfying careers, enjoyed terrific travels, and won their own version of the lottery of life. For over four decades, Lady Luck smiled on them—until one day, she didn't. Out of the blue, Fortune spun her wheel and taught them that no one is immune to tragedy and heartbreak. Bernie's two-in-a-million medical crisis sent him and Martha into a tailspin. How could such a cruel twist of fate happen to a couple who had overcome the odds to lead such positive, productive lives?
Betting on Bernie is Martha Marks's intimate, three-part memoir of their improbable courtship, happy and prosperous marriage, and not-so-golden "golden years." It will make you think, wonder, laugh, and cry.
“Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of a Marriage” by Martha Marks is a deeply moving account of love, resilience, and personal growth. Spanning over five decades, this memoir tells the story of Martha’s relationship with her husband Bernie Marks. It takes readers from their meeting in 1965 and chronicles their life until he passes in 2020.
Martha, raised in a military family, was determined to forge her own path. She vowed not to have a relationship like her parents because of her father’s controlling demeanor. Her early life experiences shaped her desire for independence, especially regarding having a family and career. Meeting Bernie, who was a secular Jewish man with no college degree, brought together their vastly different cultural and religious backgrounds. Initially, Martha’s parents had reservations about their relationship, but as time passed and they got to know Bernie better, their views shifted.
This memoir beautifully captures their journey of mutual encouragement as Martha pursued higher education, ultimately earning a doctoral degree, while Bernie was able to earn an MBA while bypassing a bachelor’s degree. The narrative also highlights the sacrifices Martha made for their marriage, often putting her ambitions on hold by having to leave positions where she felt fulfilled. This duality of success and sacrifice resonates strongly throughout these pages, illustrating the complexities of their partnership.
As the couple navigates through life’s ups and downs, including travel and artistic pursuits, the narrative takes a poignant turn when Bernie’s health declines. An unexpected illness that impacts his brain completely changes their plans for the future. The emotional weight of his illness is felt throughout the pages, especially the strain that it takes on Martha as she takes on the role of a caregiver. The Bernie that she’s known and loved for so long, is now becoming a different person. Her candid reflections on their struggles, including Bernie’s revelation of painful secrets, and their eventual transition to senior living, provide a raw and honest portrayal of love’s endurance through adversity.
Martha’s journey culminates with a posthumous tribute to Bernie, by creating a website to honor his beautiful artwork, and one to honor their relationship and shared memories. These websites offer a beautiful memorial to the man who shared her life. Martha concludes the book by discussing five “Realizations” that she hopes will resonate with readers. These final reflections invite readers to contemplate their own lives and relationships and even share those thoughts with her.
“Betting on Bernie” by Martha Marks is not just a memoir; it is an inspiring narrative that speaks to the resilience of love, the importance of personal growth, and the bittersweet nature of life’s transitions. For readers, especially those nearing retirement age, it serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate each moment with loved ones. The Marks’ story will resonate with readers long after the final page is turned.
A beautiful memoir written by Martha Marks, a scholar, educator, remarkable woman and a true lover. In her own words, she unveils a journey rich with experiences, penned with eloquence and touching honesty.
Fate brought Martha and Bernard together, beginning a love story that blossomed amidst joy and challenge. As Martha aptly reminds us, "Life can take unexpected turns," and their path together was no exception. Yet, through both sunshine and rain, their commitment to each other remained unwavering.
The book delves into their personal lives, spanning 52 remarkable years. We witness their individual pursuits, their sacrifices for love, and their commitment to living life together. Their shared adventures, seeking inspiration in untamed landscapes of life. I felt connected throughout the read.
This book is quite emotional for the good part ot it. Like laughter and tears intertwine, so it's obvious you feel deeply moved by Martha's life story.
More than just a love story, this is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Martha's willingness to push past life's limitations and embrace the unknown is quite encouraging.
Her story, ultimately bittersweet yet filled with hope, ends with this beautiful message of preserving love on a serious note.
I would say it's a beautiful read, inspiring, heartwarming and evokes the emotional side. Just finished it and hoping to read it again and her other works too.
I was originally aprehensive going in to Betting on Bernie as someone who doesn't really believe in marriage and hasn't had great role models. The story is heartbreaking at times, as life often is. These moments were incredibly well written and so moving. Over 50 years so much happens in Martha and Bernies lives, jointly as a couple, the trials they go through and the way they compromise and work through their issues is honestly inspiring. But even individually they have their own lives, people forget that even as a couple each person is their own and has their own problems to deal with. The journey of their relationship is incredible, traversing the good times and the bad. Martha Marks writes this with beauty and reality. It inspires couples who may be struggling with similar issues and shows there can be light at the end of the tunnel. Even through fundamental differences like religion, there can be ways to work through this. Whilst it's touching and heartfelt there are several lighthearted moments that remind you it's real life. Even in our darkest days we can laugh, and take advantage of those moments to keep ourselves going. I've never been hugely into memoirs but this is one of the best things I've read.
I must say the statement that got me curious to read the book was in the synopsis: Gamblers in love, they rolled the dice. I am not a fan of nonfiction but this one got me. It delivers much more than it promises. Martha invites us into the world she shared with her late husband, Bernard, and the joys, the triumphs of their marriage, flourishing careers, and traveling experiences, painting a picture of a couple that stood together against all odds. However, tragedy would knock on their door in a twist of fate and their beautiful marriage is put to the test after Bernard suffers an unforeseen condition.
Their 53-year marriage will speak to your heart and soul as it's heartfelt, inspiring, and compassionate. This intimate and resonant chronicle tells the story of two individuals who held on to their marriage even in the face of tragedy. The author's descriptions are rich and detailed evoking different emotions in the reader. Here, you will laugh, smile, cheer, and even cry as the book unfolds to its poignant but inspiring end. Altogether, this is a memoir from an author with a story to tell and one that will tug at your heartstrings.
One of the things I especially liked about this book was that it doesn't involve the usual abuse/neglect/dysfunction common to so many recent memoirs. Instead, it's a well-written story about two interesting people who created a beautiful (but imperfect) life together.
Ostensibly about the author's over-50-year marriage to her talented husband Bernie, a commercial artist who became a marketing guru and then a professional fine artist, the book reveals more about the author herself than about him. Martha Marks has been a college professor, a politician, a novelist, and a professional nature photographer.
Her look back at their journey together through the past five decades will bring a smile to the faces of people who remember when people cranked car windows by hand and navigated using paper road maps.
"Betting on Bernie" is the story of a long and (mostly) joyful marriage. The author leads us through her love story chronologically, drawing the reader to sit in on their growth as a couple. I was impressed with their accomplishments...his in art and business, hers in education and politics. Since the PBS series "Destinos" was one of my tools in my Spanish studies, I was pleased to learn that Martha Marks was one of those who contributed to that series. I enjoyed reading about their cats, who traveled with them. You come to really care about Martha and Bernie, so when tragedy occurs, it is as if it is happening to very close friends. I felt the author's joys and sorrows through her descriptions, almost as if I were experiencing these things myself. That is the best a memoir can do, I think.
Martha Marks weaves a poignant narrative about the unpredictable course of love and life. Bernie and Martha's serendipitous meeting defied the odds, setting the stage for a lifetime of shared gambles. Against all odds, they embarked on a journey marked by hard work, hazards, fortunate or unfortunate ruptures, and the triumphs of a successful marriage. Marks' style captures the essence of their resilient love, flourishing careers, and enriching experiences, painting a picture of a couple who defied the probabilities stacked against them. However, as with everything in life, the throes of tragedy appear. Bernie's unexpected condition becomes the crucible testing their love and resilience, challenging the belief that a lifetime of joy could shield them from the inevitable.
The author, known for her compelling storytelling in earlier works like The Viper Amulet and Rubies of the Viper, extends her literary prowess in Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of A Marriage. The book delves into the intricacies of a relationship that withstands the trials of cultural and religious discrepancies. Marks' skilful prose invites readers into the heart of their love story, capturing the simplicity and comfort that characterized their early days. The narrative offers a nuanced exploration of the author's youthful self-assurance and the joy derived from the unexpected moments in life. As Bernie and Martha navigate the peaks and valleys of their journey, readers witness the genuine connection that transcends external odds. The memoir unfolds with a genuine and heartfelt quality, making it a compelling exploration of the chances couples take and the emotional fortitude required when faced with unforeseen challenges.
Betting on Bernie is more than a memoir; it's a testament to the eternal tension between love and the unpredictable nature of fate. Clever phrases punctuate the narrative, offering moments of reflection and, paradoxically enough, certain humour amid endured sadness. A great read for memoir enthusiasts (and any other reader)!
Martha Marks' memoir is a captivating testament to her life as a scholar, educator, and devoted lover. Through her own eloquent and candid words, she unveils a journey abundant with rich experiences.
Destiny united Martha and Bernard, igniting a love story that flourished amidst both joy and adversity. As Martha wisely observes, "Life can take unexpected turns," and their journey together was no exception. She made challenging decisions for the sake of her marriage and Bernie’s success, without any regret, demonstrating remarkable courage and strength while honoring her marriage vow of "through sickness and in health."
It was captivating to see Martha display resilience when the "fickle fingers of fate" ignited a bomb in her marriage, altering everything in unforeseeable ways. Despite the sunshine and storms, the commitment to her marriage remained steadfast.
The memoir explores their personal lives over 52 extraordinary years. We witness their individual endeavors, their sacrifices for love, and their dedication to a shared life. Their adventures, seeking inspiration in the untamed landscapes of life, forge a strong bond with the reader.
This book is profoundly emotional, blending laughter and tears, and leaves a deep impression of Martha's life journey. More than just a love story, it is a narrative of self-discovery and personal growth. Martha's determination to transcend life's limitations and embrace the unknown is remarkably inspiring.
Her story, ultimately bittersweet yet filled with hope, concludes with a poignant message about preserving love. This memoir is an inspiring, heartwarming read that evokes deep emotions and offers an uplifting reflection on life and love.
Martha Marks' "Betting on Bernie" is a captivating memoir that feels like a whirlwind adventure through the highs and lows of life and love. The book throws you right into the serendipitous meeting of Bernard Marks and Martha Alford - two individuals whose paths crossed against all odds, setting the stage for a remarkable journey together. Marks masterfully navigates the reader through the ups and downs of Bernie and Martha's lives, filled with hard work, risks, fortunate turns, fulfilling careers, and exhilarating travels. For over four decades, they basked in the glow of Lady Luck's favor - until fate took an unexpected turn. The strength of "Betting on Bernie" lies not just in its storytelling but in its raw honesty and vulnerability. Martha Marks invites readers into her world, offering a poignant and intimate look at love's resilience in the face of adversity. Her prose weaves a tapestry of emotions, leaving readers pondering the fragility and beauty of life's tapestry long after the final page.
A love story of two opposites who build a happy life together. Martha is Protestant, values education, and wants only one thing in life: to be a college professor in a foreign language. Born with a heart defect, she can't have children. While in college, she meets Bernie. Older than she is and already making a career for himself, college isn't important to him. His goal in life is to be a fine artist selling his art in a fine gallery. Their marriage is a series of compromises, each betting on the other at times, to succeed in what they want out of life. They finally retire, travel around the southwest and Bernie's goal begins to be met when illness strikes him. It drastically changes their lives and relationship. They stick together through good times and bad. This is a great story of what marriage really is and the compromises that are made to make it work, especially in these days when the divorce rate is so high. #GoodreadsGiveaways

Martha Mark's writes a memoir of her marriage to Bernie as a tribute to her late husband. The book tells the story of not just the ups and downs but thoroughly captures the authors feelings and thoughts throughout.
Although not everyone can relate to the exact situations she went through, Martha's honesty helps readers draw parallels to challenges and decisions in their own lives, especially during difficult times.
Anyone who has ever been married can appreciate this book. In addition to reading an interesting story, you may find yourself developing skills, being inspired, and finding courage where before you had none.
This book is a beautiful and heartbreaking story and tribute to Bernie and Martha Marks life together. Martha takes us through their life together, which against all odds, remained to be woven with joy, even in the face of hardship and failing health.
I really enjoyed reading this. I became very invested in their story. The writing style was engaging and there were moments of beautiful prose. The author set up a website to accompany this book where you can go see color photos (I read this on my Kindle Paperwhite) and read more about them. I was delighted to find out that Martha has authored a couple of fiction books, which I will be checking out.
This forthright portrayal of an unlikely marriage met all my expectations. By the end, I was fully in synch with the "betting on Bernie" imagery. Indeed the intersection of love, hope, fate, and choices are represented brilliantly in this narrative. The chronological organization and three sections made good sense. I was moved by the author's frankness and honesty throughout. Some might find it tedious to read pages detailing Bernie's everyday care. I did not. I felt it was important for her to portray her experiences so we could understand them as she felt them. I found this to be a very finely written and heartwarming memoir.
I write this as I sob and weep. Read this if you 1) are thinking of getting married- it will show you what a marriage could and should look like (for the most part), and what you are VOWING for the rest of your life or 2) are grieving the loss of your spouse.
It was such a treasure to learn of Bernie and his personality, and so fun to hear Martha’s spunk and attitude the whole way. Finishing this book, while tears flow from my eyes, all I want to do is hug and love my husband.
Firat, thanks to the publisher for my Advanced Reader's Copy in return for my honest review. "It'll never last"; "Poor probability of success"-the same things that were said 42 years ago about me and my husband, so I knew I wanted to read it. And they were so happy, they proved all the naysayers wrong, as did we. So it was a book I really enjoyed, because it was true. Sad at the end, but I believe the journey was worth it.
This is a wonderfully inspiring true story that reminded me of my relationship with my wife. We have so many similarities with this couple in the book. I admire them a lot.
I felt very emotional as I read this, and I really feel for Martha. It really is a love story. Though it’s not all sunshine and there are lots of troubles, the sun does shine through in the end.
This is a must read for anyone that has lost a loved one . It has helped me through my grief after 4 years, made me think about things in a new perspective. I read this non-stop. It's that good.
This book is the story of Martha and Bernie two people who were unlikely to meet or even like each other much less get married. However they did and this is the story of how that came to pass how their lives went and what they are doing now. I really like this book as it was very honest, heartwarming, and emotional in how it dealt with the positives and negatives of this couple's marriage life. Certainly an uplifting story that tells you that love knows no bounds and can overcome even most obstacles.
Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of a Marriage by Martha Marks is a beautiful account of a love story that started with uncertainty and lasted nearly half a century. The couple's life journey is an adorable and immersive story that got me hooked on the book and I didn't want it to end.
The author’s narrative style, use of humor, and conversational tone make the story relatable and interesting. It felt like I was listening to her and not reading a book. I liked the couple's attachment, although I felt empathy for Martha when Bernie died and she kept hearing their favorite conversations.
The memoir is a true reflection of life's reality, and we can learn several moral lessons from the author's marriage. For instance, it is inevitable that at one point in life, one of the partners will have to learn to accept the loss of the other and learn to live alone again.
I enjoyed reading Betting on Bernie and recommend it to everyone; this is a must-read.
Betting on Bernie by Martha Marks, is a great story. When I started reading the book, the love story between Benrnie and Martha felt like a fairytale that would never end. I loved the fact that Martha continuously pushed for what she wanted, despite the position women were in at the time.
I also felt Martha's grief and heartbreak when Bernie became sick, especially after his confession to her. For a woman who had only loved one man, it must have been hard.
I loved reading this book. The love and commitment they had for each other shine through brightly.
This book was amazing. I won this in a Goodreads giveaway, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful to win a book. This is the story of love, loss, heartache, and friendship. It is the story of life. If you ever find yourself getting frustrated while reading, just remember that the “characters” are real people, and that this is a retelling of someone’s life. We all make mistakes and anger those who love us and are rooting for us most. I am not married, but it is obvious that it is a difficult adventure. However, it is an adventure nonetheless. Highly recommend this one.
I love exciting love stories that reflect the theme of us against the world. Bernie and Martha's relationship showcased that statement in a captivating manner. When their friends, family, and the rest of society thought they would never make it work, they proved them wrong, and their love is stronger than ever. I was mesmerized by the entire story, and many chapters resonated with me and my relationship with my husband. Bernie and Martha developed such a strong connection through fifty years of marriage that Martha could hear his voice in her head, knowing their bond was everlasting. My heart is warmed more than ever before when I read that statement.
Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of Marriage by Martha Marks is a perfect book to read whenever you need an inspirational and motivational boost. Reading this book was like I was in attendance at Martha's motivational speaking events, and we met for lunch afterward. The book is well-edited and well-written. For these reasons, I am awarding this book a 4 star rating.
This was a good book. I liked how the couple met at the beginning and thought it was cute. But it turned into such a normal story. And I mean that in the most respectful way.
"Betting on Bernie" is an intimate memoir chronicling the enduring love story of Martha Marks and her husband, Bernie. The narrative navigates their joyful journey, highlighting their achievements and rich experiences, including Bernie's success as an artist and Martha's diverse career. The author's recounting of their life creates a connection with readers, drawing them into the couple's joys and sorrows. However, when tragedy strikes, the emotional impact is palpable. The memoir excels in presenting a real and imperfect but beautiful life.
What sets this memoir apart is its departure from the common themes of dysfunction found in many memoirs. Instead, it offers a well-written account of two remarkable individuals who built a life together. Martha Marks emerges as a multifaceted personality, revealing her roles as a professor, politician, novelist, and nature photographer. The book skillfully captures the essence of a bygone era, resonating with readers who recall hand-cranked car windows and paper road maps.
While the memoir provides a touching love story, it also serves as a guide for those facing similar challenges with loved ones. The prose flows beautifully, with clever phrases that evoke smiles. However, as fate takes a downward turn, the story becomes poignant, offering a courageous and honest portrayal of love's journey. In the end, "Betting on Bernie" stands as a well-told and emotionally resonant love story.
Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of A Marriage I can say is a read that centers on marriage, love and family. This is a beautiful and captivating love story between Bernie and Martha that evokes all kinds of emotions. It shows the reader that love can blossom in unimaginable ways if only they choose to cultivate it. The rapport between the author and her husband cannot go unmentioned. Despite the fact that they come from varying ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds and have different ambitions, they choose to make their marriage work. They support each other in good and bad times. One thing that stood out for me is the willingness of Martha to support her husband even when he is very sick. This is a demonstration of immense love and patience. Painting is something that Bernie loves to do and he eventually becomes a professional fine artist. He is able to showcase his work in galleries and other places too. However, tragedy strikes when an MRI reveals an unusual activity in his brain. This leads to frequent visits to the hospital and 911 calls. This is where the marriage vow “For better or worse” is put to test. But I can say that she passed the test even though it was difficult for her. Martha comes out as a strong willed and bold woman. This is an amazing memoir I would encourage people to read as they will learn a lot as I have!
Betting on Bernie by Martha Marks is the memoir of the author's 50+ year relationship with her husband. It starts with their first meeting and tells the story of several relocations, career changes, joyful events, and tragedies. As the title suggests, trust and placing a bet on your spouse/life partner is a recurring theme. Other important ideas are choosing a child-free lifestyle, following creative passions, and in the last third of the book, coping with illness and loss.
This is one of the best memoirs I've ever read. From the first page, I was hooked. I particularly enjoyed Martha Marks' warm writing style, which is consistent throughout. Although I was born in a completely different part of the world and decade, I related to large parts of Martha and Bernie's story. The book is lovingly written and well-edited, and the many beautiful photos make everything come to life.
I would highly recommend Betting on Bernie to anyone who enjoys a good memoir or, like me, is about to "bet on" their own partner. The author is honest about the joys as well as the challenges of her relationship, which makes this an extremely valuable and authentic account.
I met Martha Marks in the late 1990's when I was running for a seat on the Lake County Board in Illinois. She was already serving on the board and helped to mentor me and helped me get elected. We have stayed in touch, and I have followed along with things that have happened in her life and in her travels, but I had no idea what she had really been going through. I felt like this book really drew me into their lives. From the narrative conversations that they had, to the trials and tribulations, the ups and downs, it is so wonderfully written! I now feel closer to Martha than ever. I feel like she really lets the reader know what to expect, and what she lived through with her then ailing husband Bernie. Not only is this a good read of a love story, but also a helpbook for those going through similar things with loved ones. I am so happy and proud to say that I know this author, even more now than I thought I did before. I highly recommend that you read "Betting on Bernie" a Memoir of a Marriage, authored by Martha Marks.
This three part memoir reads more like a novel, especially in the first two parts and I love it! And although the author admits the dialogue may not be accurate after all these years, it still gives you great insight on their relationship dynamic. You'll learn about both the author's and her husband's life, the book starting from when they had first met. Those first chapters are bright and their budding relationship is adorable, but be warned. This is overall a sad, spiraling story especially in the final part. The author heavily focuses on her suffering and how her husband's failing health impacted her, while I was hoping the book would reach deeper into her husband's perspective. I did love the addition of photos throughout the years added in every chapter, sometimes those are worth a thousand words. If you enjoy memoirs, I'd recommend checking this one out if you can tolerate a sad subject like this.
Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of A Marriage is a three-part, 296-page book by Martha Marks. The October 2023 memoir is all about the lives and times, particularly from their young adulthood to the recent pandemic, of Martha and her husband Bernard “Bernie” Louis Marks.
The oxymoronic chapter 1's exposition--arguably, a moral dilemma--is the plot’s internal conflict that ushers in a retrospective examination of lives well lived. The way the characters conducted themselves in difficult circumstances--especially where a go ahead is a damned choice, while a turnaround is a doomed option (from marriage and motherhood decisions to the dilemma of end-of-life care)--will prompt the readers's interjections, along the lines of, "Hmm!"
Whether you are a suggestible or an inexorable reader, the personal journeys--from secret personal defeats to publicized collective victories--will prompt you to (dis)agree or take a neutral stance as the book absorbingly draws you in.
Whether read fleetingly, or, better yet, pored over, the Betting on Bernie: A Memoir of A Marriage's emotive aftertaste lingers on.
The author's linear narrative writing befits this evocative gem whose historical events, photograph-immortalized happy memories, and heartfelt personal tragedies make it a bittersweet memoir.
