Day 1. A young woman’s body is found in a shallow grave in the woods, buried in a white shroud. She’s been dead for a week. Her teeth are smashed in, her lips stitched together. Her hands are missing.
She’s the fourth young woman found like this.
With no witnesses, no clues and no leads to follow, the investigation is going nowhere.
That’s when Detective Alice Rossi is called in.
Alice knows this case is a poisoned chalice. Not least because she has a new team to contend with — who don’t like being bossed around by a woman.
Day 2. Sixteen-year-old Maggie Hewson is reported missing. She never came home from school, and her father is beside himself.
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley and Joffe books and the fantastic author Helen durrant for an early copy of her book to read.
I really enjoy reading her different series,This is book two and still to read book one..Detective Alice Rossi on a murder case of women found in shallow graves no clues who they are except one...who are behind the murders..and a missing girl Maggie,Will they find her? Is the a connection, or two different storylines. Another enjoyable read her books are easy reads, well written books looking forward to reading more of her books.
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon uk..

I quite like DCI Alice Rossi. This time, she is investigating the murders of four teenagers. There are plenty of suspects to choose from. We also get some sub-plots. I was quickly pulled into this story. This is a quick and easy-to-read murder mystery. The characters were well-developed. I'm looking forward to reading book three in this well-written series.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #HelenHDurrant for my ARC of #TheRavenswoodMurders in exchange for an honest review.
Greater Manchester, and Needle Crag is the perfect place to hide the dead. Joining Detective Alice Rossi for book two. Same hallmarks same killer, as Leo Monk makes Alice the senior investigating officer on the dream catcher operation and solving this case involves days of work, she is determined to get the fiend who kills all these teenage girls with no names, the latest needs to be kept silent from the press, as could be known to the team, the Ravenwood Murderer knows this area and DC Roger Wallis and DS Jason Hawkes are brought in on this high profile murder case. What a book that will send your mind haywire. Gripping so gripping. The characters Alice and Dilys are my favourites and can't wait to find out more in the next book. A brilliant superb banging book that is so unputdownable right through.
I’m really liking DCI Alice Rossi. A smart, tough, 50 some year old, who has a good team behind her. This starts off with a bang…..4 murders of teens that have already happened, & Alice is thrust right into the investigation. This was such a fast paced crime story, I was literally flying through the pages. Excellent 2nd story in this new series. Can’t wait for next one!
Positive: The murder mystery started off with a bang. The detective work in building the case held my interest. I liked the protagonist, the lead detective. Red herrings made it interesting.
Negative: Poor editing was problematic. The hands cut off yet there was mention of getting finger print analysis. One sentence states they are going to serve a search warrant yet the next sentence states they are doing the search the day after tomorrow. These are two examples among a number of discrepancies. Although tension is built in the attempt to learn who is the villain, the reveal comes out of left field and NO MOTIVE is given. To drop a bomb without explanation is frustrating at best. Poor character development . Too many characters started really clouding the plot. One person (Alec) popped in then popped out all within two sentences. Additionally, everyone saying how fearful they were of the villain precluded their revealing him, although he had murdered 4 people. Maybe going to the police and indeed revealing his identity might stop his insanity, and save their own lives. The villain reveal was the most disappointing because the motive wasn’t developed, the climax and ending was rushed.
Three stars because it was exciting and held my interest. The ending was a terrible letdown.
I received an ARC from NetGalley. This review expresses my personal viewpoint.
The Ravenswood Murders by Helen H. Durrant is the second book in the excellent Detective Alice Rossi series and I have enjoyed reading these books, especially as I ended up reading it in one sitting. All Helen's books have been a great read with brilliant twists and turns throughout and with some brilliant red herrings!!! that will have you hooked from the beginning till the end.
I highly recommend this series and all Helen's books. They have never disappointed, great for holidays or a relaxing day off and always been a 5 star read.
Big thank you to Netgalley, Joffe Books and the author Helen Durrant for my ARC of in exchange for an honest review.
I do love a Helen Durrant novel and I can just read this in one session as they are so good. This is a new series to me and I am really enjoying the new characters they work so well. I am looking forward to seeing how this develops going forward.
The crime itself was interesting and made sense and was well researched and kept my imagination There were lots of twists and turns.
I was given a copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
It was fine, somewhat predictable, however I do wish I'd read it instead of listening on audiobook though as the narrator had some weird mispronunciations, for example sundry is all one word, not sun dry.
The Ravenswood Murders is the second book in the Detective Alice Rossi series.
The story begins with a young girl being held captive, telling the reader that she is leaving clues as she sews. She knows she doesn't have much time left and is determined to leave enough information so the killer will be caught.
A few days later a body of a young girl is found. Det. Alice Rossi is given the case to investigate. The next day the father of a missing girl turns up at the police station to file a report. Alice is there and overhears the conversation. She offers to help locate his daughter. There are early similarities and Alice wonders if they are connected somehow.
After the autopsy is done it is determined that this is the fourth victim and no new clues at this time. The investigation leads to drug lords and runners with several possibilities, but can they be tied to the murders as well.
This was a riveting mystery. Lots of clues and suspects to choose from. The ending isn't necessarily a cliff hanger, but it does lead the reader to believe there will be another book in the series. I also appreciate the glossary at the back of the book. Since I am not from England I appreciate the ability to check how the words were being used. While I speak English, we all use different words to mean different things and the glossary helps clear things up.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
A young woman's body is found in a grave in the woods - and it's not the first one. This is the latest case to land on DI Alice Rossi's desk. With no clues, no leads and no witnesses, she knows this won't be easy - and that's without factoring in her new team who are definitely not keen on having a female boss. When another girl goes missing, the pressure is on to make sure she isn't the fifth body . . .
Having really enjoyed the first in this series, I was keen to read this second one - and it was even better! Plenty going on, pressure galore and the case going nowhere fast, Alice really needs her wits about her for this second outing and it is a gripping read. I think I suspected ever single character at one time or another - except the guilty one! A cracking read, highly recommended and easily worth all five sparkling stars!
The Ravenswood Murders by Helen H. Durrant is a good crime thriller that has a good twist to keep you turning the pages.
This is book 2 in the Detective Alice Rossi series. There are plenty of suspects to choose from, and the author's writing style grabs you from the beginning and keeps you invested until the satisfying ending. I like the main character and getting to know her more and the team.
I would recommend this book and look forward to reading more. Good suspense, good drama, a good storyline, and a satisfying conclusion.
Alice Rossi is brought in to solve a case when the team has failed so far. By this point there are already 4 bodies of teenage girls found all wrapped in shrouds. Alice and her new team have to plunge into the world of business, drugs and vendettas to find out who is responsible for these murders.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
Detective Alice Rossi is called in to investigate l, when a young lady is found murdered, wrapped in a shroud. She’s the fourth victim and the team are struggling for evidence.
This was so good. I had no idea where the storyline was going. There were quite a few little sub stories throughout and many many characters. This was really effective though, as it held me guessing right up until the very end.
To add this is book 2 in the series, I haven’t read book 1 but I don’t think it was necessary.
The author's books are full of suspense, good plots and characters. She pulls you into the story from the beginning with questions of why. Once the girls disappeared, nothing, no demands or reports of missing. Buried by a lone tree, without a name and how many others are there. Alice Rossi was the lead on the investigation she has her own method of how to solve. A good series that I enjoyed. Given arc by. Net Galley and Joffe for my voluntary review ...Nov23 release
I’m starting this review slightly (very) back to front from my other reviews and I want to start off by saying what a frustratingly clever ending. I am now desperate to read the next book in this series and cannot wait for it to come out.
This is book 2 in the Detective Alice Rossi series and given I hadn’t read the first book I found it easy enough to read as a stand alone thriller however I will be going back to read the first book in this series.
Alice is investigating 4 murders, they have been friends for many years and go way back. 4 have been murdered, 1 is still walking free but with a target on her back.
With a whole heap of suspects but each and everyone coming to a dead end Alice and her team are no closer to catching their killer and as the book went on I had no idea who was behind this and how they were going to catch their killer, but they did and there was a shocking twist at the end which I loved.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review. A great book which requires a great deal of concentration as there are 2 stories running along side each other and at time I found I had to re-read a page to keep up, but over all I loved it!
This is book two of a great new series and can be read as a standalone. It has a suspenseful and enjoyable storyline and plot and is as always well written. There are some clever twists weaved into the storyline with great characters and descriptive. Once you start reading this, you are full of suspicions as to who, and there are plenty of suspects in this clever storyline. Another great book by this author, and I definitely recommend reading it. My thanks to Joffe books for the advanced copy. This is my honest and unbiased review.
I am normally a big fan of this author's works, but this one just felt off to me. For starters there were a LOT of little inconsistencies that I hope were fixed prior to publication. However, because I did read an advanced copy of this novel, I have no way of knowing if they were and can only speak on what I DID read.
To begin with it, it is plainly stated that the HANDS of the victims were cut off, but then when Alice goes to the PM of this new victim she is told that the coroner "ran prints" but they weren't in the database. Ran prints on what exactly? Then the first time she meets Ralph he tells her that he can't see things far away, but then shows her the magnifying glass he uses to read his ledgers and claims to not be able to see things close up? And then he *spoiler alerts* later on? I mean which is it?
We then have Alice and Hawkes interviewing Ralph at a later date. They tell him they will be back with a search warrant (in fact, Alice has already agreed to meet the lead Forensics person there at 2pm), and yet suddenly the search is put off? And I don't mean put off by a couple of hours, I mean Alice tells Hawkes that they are taking the following day off and will execute the search warrant the day after that.
Added to that, I was getting pretty fed up with the sheer amount of characters who kept saying they had information, but "couldn't possibly say" because they would be killed. Look, we get it. There are some dangerous people involved in this story, but this was just overkill. And a few of those "bad guys" were either too stupid, or too over the top to even be remotely believable.
The rest of the story went much the same way. People lie, Alice confronts them, they continue to withhold information (either on the grounds they will be killed if they talk or just because they are enjoying the game). But then, just when all hope seems lost, another member of Alice's team goes into a bar that is apparently frequented by cops (and criminals), yet the bartender is all too willing to shed insight and key factors into another part of the investigation for no reason other than someone (another cop nonetheless) mentions the person in question. A little too convenient if you ask me.
All things considered, I will read more from this author. I will even give this series another chance, but if I keep seeing all of these little issues in the future, I might have to take a step back for awhile.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
"The Ravenswood Murders" by Helen H. Durrant is a compelling addition to the British crime thriller genre, marking the second installment in the Detective Alice Rossi series. Durrant's novel plunges readers into a chilling sequence of events that begins with a young woman's body discovered in a shallow grave, setting off a complex investigation led by the tenacious Detective Rossi.
The narrative is tightly woven, with Durrant's prose driving the story forward at a relentless pace. The author masterfully crafts a tapestry of suspense, layering twist upon twist that keeps readers guessing until the very end. The book's strength lies in its ability to balance the intricacies of the plot with the development of its central character, Alice Rossi, whose leadership is tested not only by the case's grim nature but also by the dynamics within her new team.
Durrant's portrayal of Rossi is nuanced and multifaceted, presenting her as a formidable protagonist who navigates the challenges of her role with grit and determination. The supporting cast of characters is equally well-drawn, providing a rich backdrop against which the drama unfolds.
The novel's setting is evocatively described, with the dark woods and the town of Ravenswood almost becoming characters in their own right. The atmosphere is dense with tension, mirroring the dark undercurrents of the plot.
While the book is undeniably gripping, some readers may find the detailed depiction of police procedures and interviews to be somewhat exhaustive. However, this meticulous attention to detail also lends authenticity to the narrative, immersing the reader fully in the world Durrant has created.
In summary, "The Ravenswood Murders" is a must-read for fans of the genre. It delivers an intricate mystery, a strong female lead, and a satisfying conclusion that will leave readers eager for more of Detective Alice Rossi's adventures.
Over the last few months, three young women’s bodies have been found at Ravenswood in shallow graves. Wearing only handstitched shrouds, lime was spread over the bodies to speed up decomposition, their teeth were smashed and hands cut off, and no matches on DNA has meant they are all still unidentified. The police have even received a boastful letter from the killer but still have no leads. Now a fourth girl’s corpse has been found, her throat slashed, mouth sewn up over smashed teeth and her hands missing. DCI Alice Rossi in the Serious Crime Squad based in Greater Manchester has been made the new SIO and immediately recruits DC Roger Wallis and DS Jason Hawkes who worked on her previous case at Still Waters to join her on Operation Dream Catcher. Due to the latest victim’s brave thinking in the face of death, they are able to make an identification and delve into the girl’s life. Soon they discover all manner of links, including one to that of another missing girl. Surely these can’t all be coincidences but still the detectives are struggling to make headway. Where have the girls been kept, were they together and how many more could there be? All questions Alice needs answers to if she’s to catch a dangerous killer. Alice is a fantastic new character with nearly 30 years’ experience in the job. She’s extremely capable and very driven. Jason, a younger but very intuitive officer, makes a great addition to her team, as does Roger Wallis. Her home life is enhanced by the lovely Dilys, friend and housekeeper, who I hope we will see more of. This story has an excellent and very complex plot with loads of different interwoven strands and some very strong suspects, finishing with a fast and exciting ending. The reader is already given hints as to Alice’s next case and I am definitely looking forward to book three!
This is my first encounter with Helen H Durrant's Detective Alice Rossi, on her second outing. I have previously read Books 1 and 6 of her "Victim" series, and admitted to feeling out of my depth for not having read the books between to get a better understanding of the later novel which I reviewed in May of this year.
This latest release promises "an absolutely gripping crime thriller with a massive twist", which is my favourite type of fiction."
The book references events from the initial outing, but not in any way that negatively impacts on this tale as a standalone (or introduction).
The main characters are nicely drawn, back stories present well, over halfway in and I'm no closer to whodunnit - though I have my suspicions obviously (and dear reader that suspicion proved correct)...it was an enjoyable read right up to Chapter 32 ( of 51) and then a really lazy piece of story telling p'd me off - man goes into a bar, barman tells him some critical information relating to an investigation - it's either a massive red herring or an awful exposé being given without any storycraft...no spoilers from me BUT it's not clever whatever the outcome...
So, to the outcome - somewhat rushed I felt...two major gripes...1) why, when there's a report of shots fired, would an experienced officer rush to the scene unarmed and without sorting out the armed response unit? 2) why does no one question that the shooter that saves the day manages to fire off a life saving shot in twilight on a wet evening in the middle of the woods when it's been established that his eyesight is naff?
For me a promising tale was ruined in the latter stages...did Ms Durrant get bored, was there a new book to start? Who knows...despite the cover claim there was no massive twist, nor was this reader gripped to be honest
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of The Ravenswood Murders, the second novel to feature DCI Alice Rossi of Greater Manchester Police.
A young woman’s body is found buried in the woods, the fourth to be found in recent months. Alice, based on the success of her last case, is brought in to head the investigation. She’s not enthusiastic as there is nothing to go on and the existing team isn’t keen on a female boss. She’s hardly started when she learns that another sixteen year old girl has gone missing.
I enjoyed The Ravenswood Murders, which is an absorbing read with plenty of twists and turns. It is told mostly from Alice and the investigation’s point of view with the unnamed killer making the odd contribution and when I say odd I mean odd as it hints at some kind of mental illness.
The novel has a lot going on and as the drugs business features heavily there is no end to the lying, secrets and non cooperation. It also means a raft of suspects with nothing firm enough to pin on them. I found it frustrating in parts that everything Alice has is too nebulous for a charge and that makes the investigation a bit circular with the same people hauled in with the same negative result. Still, it inches forward gradually until the killer makes a mistake and it’s game over.
I like the characters and the author has a way of holding the reader’s attention so these compensate for any frustration.
The Ravenswood Murders is a good read that I can recommend.
A serial killer is on the loose, taking teen girls and making them sew their own shrouds before killing them. He mutilates the body to avoid identification of his victims and the police are stumped. DCI Alice Rossi is called upon to breathe new life into the investigation but can she work quick enough to save the next victim? The Ravenswood Murders is the second book in the detective and serial killer series featuring DCI Alice Rossi. I have previously read and reviewed the first book The Ash Lake Murders. Alice is called in to support a team trying to catch a killer. She faces a little opposition but the team are desperate to solve the case. Four teens are dead and another is missing. She brings in officers from her last big case as she respects their input and needs their contribution. The descriptions of the bodies is quite graphic as they have had their hands removed and teeth smashed to avoid dental or fingerprint identification. Hauntingly, the most recent victim sewed her name into the shroud and this causes an emotional spike and additional determination for Alice. I really love Alice's character. She has issues from her past which came to the fore in the last book. Now she is trying to focus on the case, bringing a fresh pair of eyes to the situation. The author creates a fast pace through quite short chapters and the writing style was gripping as the plot develops. I kept thinking I had guessed how the events would play out but in fact I was skilfully misdirected. The Ravenswood Murders was a compelling killer thriller and I can't wait for the next book!
Alice Rossi is back in this second book of the series. They work well as stand alone but there is a back story so you will enjoy it more if you have read book 1. Alice is handed a case involving the murders of young girls that has ground to a halt. She proved herself with the Still Waters case so her bosses are hoping she will be able to move the case forward and crack it. But is this case a poisoned chalice? Is she doomed to failure? She builds herself a team bringing in 2 trusted detectives but the existing team are detectives she doesn't know. Will they resent her for taking over? As she gets stuck in to the investigation it becomes clear this is more than murder and soon the waters get muddied by a drugs case. Alice also finds her personal life is bringing more problems into the mix. With crooked cops, witnesses in fear of their lives and lies and secrets everywhere the team certainly have their work cut out with this one. But Alice is determined not to fail. An absolutely gripping book that I really enjoyed. The characters are realistic complete with flaws that fit in to the story perfectly. The suspense builds all the way through the book right to the adrenaline pumping ending. The murderer was a mind blow I didn't see coming. Absolutely brilliant, more please and soon.
(stand alone book) When a young woman's body is found in a shallow grave, there is little the police have to go on other than she is the fourth girl to be found in a certain way. On the strength of her previous case, Detective Alice Rossi is brought in. This means that there are more hurdles than just a case where others have failed, she has a new team to contend with as well. When there is a faint link to a mill where the father of a recently missing girl visited the day she went missing, are things starting to fall into place? Alice is thinking about moving and retiring as she has served her time, however her love of the job and sympathy for the victims keeps her doing what she does best- finding the bad guys. Another brilliant, entertaining read from the master of crime that is Helen Durrant. Alice is a very likeable character and I’m hoping she won’t retire any time soon! It's a very well thought out plot with plenty of suspects that keep the reader between the pages guessing as to whom the perpetrator could be and there is also a subplot in the mix. A thoroughly ingenious read and I can’t wait for the next one. For more reviews please follow me on Twitter or Threads @nickisbookblog _____________________
This was pretty disappointing. The first book didn't blow me away but it definitely had a bit more of a kick than this one did.
I think what I disliked about this book so much was the narator on the audible. She didn't change her voice at all for any different characters and there wasn't much emotional change in what she was saying either. It made for a really difficult listen.
Narator issues aside, I don't think I would have rated the book very high anyway. There was no bite in it. It basically felt like I was following around an investigation with no other thoughts. There wasn't any interesting parts or I didn't feel like I was yearning to know what happened to the victims. The conclusion was pretty lacklustre and it was either so lacking in intrigue that I didn't feel like it was a big reveal OR it was an obvious ending that didn't have any imagination at all.
This is a short, fast read that didn’t go where I was expecting, and that I enjoyed a lot. As the second volume in a series, it doesn’t show any of the issues common to sequels, it is never repetitive and gives you just enough background that you don’t feel like you’re missing anything. Based on the success of her previous case, Alice Rossi is brought on to lead the team investigating a series of gruesome murders. I liked the chemistry with her and the agents she brings with her, while the rest of the team is wary of her and her techniques. There is discord especially when she starts trying to find a missing teenager, who may or may not be involved in the murders. Most think it’s a separate case, but Alice doesn’t. There are also a lot of suspects, most of them horrible people, so any one of them could have done it. I enjoyed the read so much that I will be adding the first book to my TBR. Alice is interesting and likable and the plot was solid and engrossing. Good job! I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Joffe Books.
🙊Revolving door of suspects: baffling but DCI Rossi will find her man!
4-4.5🌟stars This police procedural British mystery was a good one. I particularly liked how suspicion kept flip-flopping back and forth between a number of suspects, though it never wavers from the lead detective's belief that it's centered in the local drug scene.
DCI Alice Rossi, the central protagonist who directs the police investigation into the murders of four teenage girls, is calm, nurturing of her team and a personality that I liked. The story moved at a good pace and the referrals to Rossi's and others' personal lives added some dimension but were minor; the author kept the focus on the case. It's quality writing that resulted in a good, entertaining story. I had no idea who the murderer was until the climax because the author gave so many excellent indications of guilt to go around!
I was drawn to this story because I was a fan of the first book in the series and I was not disappointed.
Thanks to Joffe Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
THE RAVENSWOOD MURDERS (Detective Alice Rossi Book #2) by Helen H. Durrant is a gripping serial killer mystery/police procedural featuring a mature female detective protagonist. While this is the second book in this series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
DCI Alice Rossi is assigned to take over the investigation of four teenage girls found mutilated and buried in Ravenswood that has stalled. Her superior has chosen her after her success with her last case and is hoping that fresh eyes on the case can catch this serial killer. The most recent grave was found within the week and the dead girl has left a clue embroidered in her homemade shroud.
When a fifth girl goes missing, Rossi is in a fight against time with a team she is not sure she can trust.
I enjoyed this second book’s plot and pace much better than the first and I am glad I continued with the series because I had high hopes for this new protagonist and series. I like that DCI Rossi is a mature female investigator and she needs all her talent and skill with the number of possible suspects in this case. The plot has several subplots interwoven in this story that did not detract from the main investigation, but added to the complex reality of the case and they also did not slow the pace. I always enjoy it when I am guessing right up to the end.
I recommend this thrilling serial killer mystery/police procedural and all this author’s books.
In the Ravenswood Murders detective Alice Rossi investigates the murders of several woman. All have been found in a shroud made of bedsheets, although only the last woman found had been dead for a relatively short time, all the others had been buried a long time ago so the materials were almost unrecognisable.
At first it is hard to find a link between the victims, but slowly new facts come to light, especially when a friend of the last victim contacts inspector Rossi and this leads to the discovery of the names of all the victims is discovered. It was the first book about Alice Rossi that I've read and I must say it is an easy read, with enough suspense and nice sub-plots. Some of the language was grating on my nerves, but maybe this was supposed to be a kind of slang from the Manchester area which I'm not familiar with. The ending wasn't very surprising. Anyway, I certainly recommend this book and will round the stars up to 4.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #HelenHDurrant for my ARC of #TheRavenswoodMurders in exchange for an honest review.
“The Ravenswood Murders” is the second book in the Alice Roddi series by author Helen H Durrant. I enjoy reading Helen Durrant novels as they are well written, good plots and full of interesting characters. I have read several series by her and this is another entertaining one to get my teeth into.
The body of a young woman is discovered in a shallow grave covered by a macabre shroud and unsettling mutilations and Alice Rossi is called on to investigate the case. A further three more victims follow and it appears that a serial killer is at large.
I enjoy the character Alice Rossi and it looks like this is going to be another excellent series to add to my never-ending list The book is well paced and addictive so it was no surprise to me that I read it in one sitting.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Joffe Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
