Scythe & Souls #1

Reaping Demons

Rate this book
Turns out there are monsters in the world, and I am not talking about the kind that eat pizza with a knife and fork. For over 40 years, I never knew of the demons that lurk among us. One foggy night, everything changed as I witnessed strange creatures emerge from a sewer to attack. Horrible monsters that only I could see. As if almost dying weren’t traumatizing enough, I became a target, not just of the sexy scythe-wielding man who took out the abominations, nor the cute detective who questioned me as a witness to the carnage. For some reason, the demons are after my middle-aged ass!

Why would they care about an average woman who works as a clerk, rides the bus, and lives in an apartment alone? I’m told it’s because I’m special. Because there is a latent magic in me I never knew about. I disagree but that hasn’t stopped folks from expecting me to join the resistance. I’d rather go back to my quiet life, however, now that the demons have found me, they won’t rest until they have me in their clawed clutches. Like hell am I going down without a fight. I never asked to be a heroine, but apparently, I’ve been chosen and now I must reap what fate has bestowed before chaos is sown.

~ New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .

I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.

Yes I listened to yet another Eve Langlais book. They are always fun, and different from each other.

Sadie is 40+. Yes, an older heroine! She doesn´t have any friends anymore, just her work. No man. And then suddenly she sees freaky demons, and what the heck. What is going on?! I liked that she hid, I mean who wouldn´t! She says she is a coward, she says she can´t fight, and she is right. She is real. It will not be easy.

So Sadie can see demons. They are real. There is a weird guy with a scythe killing demons. She seems to have magic, and she needs to learn to handle it.

People are really dying left and right in this one. These are some freaky demons. Creepy and small, and deadly.

It ends sort of well. I mean all hell is about to break loose, but that is for another day.

Actionfilled, and maybe maybe some romance lurking...or at least passion? Who knows about the future.

Good narration. She kept a good pace and did action and other parts well. She also got the feel of Sadie and I felt i was there with them

Eva stories are hit or miss with me unfortunately this story ends just went it got interesting gonna either be a triangle or a trio, but sounds like there will be angst to go with it for 40+ years olds, which sorry works fine for 20 year old children but it 40+ mature women, we actually don’t have time for that bs. So think I am done with this story line

I'm super confused about why Ms. Langlais decides to make whiny, spineless, annoying, juvenile mature women characters. Hell, let's be honest. . . even if this was a 20yo, I would say the same thing. BUT there have been two series by this author that I couldn't continue with, and they were both mature women. So, I'm seeing a pattern here. I did finish this story hoping Sadie would 'woman-up', but n.o.p.e.

I get tricked by this authors' books every time it seems.
They open with a fairly well done intro. There is a decent amount of humor that makes me chuckle sometimes. And it has a fair amount of awareness and meta references around the genre while still taking itself seriously enough to not be just a joke which promises something at least somewhat original.

I never have the feeling I found a hidden jewel but it seems like it could be an entertaining and engaging diversion. Comfort food if you will.

The world-building of this author is never really great with lots of bad tropes that are inherently flawed for a plethora of reasons but there is a certain amount of holes and shallowness in the plot and the worldbuilding I am willing to look past if the rest is entertaining and/or has an interesting twist on some tropes.
But then this author never actually delivers even the little I expect.
The meta-awareness seems to imply that the author understands the common and tired clichées and this makes me expect some subversion or at least a bit of play with the tropes. But none of that actually follows.

The story eventually starts to follow a bog-standard plot with the MC being the chosen one but also an incompetent damsel in distress all the while insisting in her own feminist indepdenence and somesuch. Eventually the MC will probably be trained to be the classic uber fighter that faces increasingly ridiculous threats to provide any sort of challenge. You know how it goes.

To be fair the book is also pretty self-aware about this and this helps diffuse my frustration with it a bit. But again, the book doesn't do anything with this. There is no actual subversion, just a meta-comentary on the tropes. Only to then just follow the clichées straight down to their inevitable conclusions anyway.
I could write a lot more but I feel like I would just repeat the same points, supporting them with a different section in the book each time.

The romance is MFM but is almost nonexistent in this one and will probably be developed in later books.

At the end of the day this turned out to be a large collection of many of the worst clichées of the genre along side with the utter lack of depth that makes sure there is nothing to be salvaged from any of it.
The humor starts out mediocre but only goes downhill from there, the meta-commentary is just a waste of time, and the world, plot, and characters couldn't be more shallow. Just an all-around disapointment.

But you know what, I'll not give a star-rating for now. With so few ratings, a low average can completely break a books' neck and apparently there is an audience for this type of book considering how many of them are being written still.

Holy crap the MFC is dumber than a box of rocks. She acts like she's 18 rather than 42. I'm on chapter 8/21 and already:

She saw "sewer aliens"/ demons attacking people and then the MMC Cain come and swing around a scype but he's invisible thanks to his coat. She literally told the detective all the paranormal things she saw because she "didn't want to lie to the police". Girlfriend. Are you STUPID? They're going to look at you like you're nuts and a suspect (which, surprise, they did) and also not believe you.

She went upstairs to check on her neighbor after what she thought was possibly blood was dripping down her ceiling. And she was like "should I take a knife? Nahhhh. Who needs a weapon. I'm in denial because that's quirky!" Like WTF, can you be ANY DUMBER.

And then she saw a couple demons on the train after leaving from the first attack and proceeded to say she's never riding on the train again. But then after she talked to the police detective and told him all about an invisibility coat and a man with a disappearing scythe (because again "I don't want to lie to the police"), what does she do? Take a biiiiig guess of what this dumbass of a MFC does.

Goes on a train.

And it proceeds to get attacked by *shock* demons. And in comes Cain to save the day, with a lot of snarky comments from the MFC.

I can't with this book. DNF 37%

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

What is this mess that fate has forced upon you Sadie girl?

What an unexpected delight to find a chosen one story with a most unwilling and terrified 40 year old woman at its core! And with two very capable and handsome protectors, uncharacteristically drawn to her side beyond what duty requires of them? If it wasn't for descriptions of the absolute grossness of all the demons and their activities, Sadie might have been more easily swayed to accept her current position in life and the future of the world. Having no previous knowledge or experience with lhe reality of demon existence, thus far she's been holding on, by a thread, but her drive to survive has Sadie fighting back against the demon invasion and recongnizing the need to be able to at least protect herself and be more useful in further attacks. Ready for book 2.

Reaping Demons

Sadie Butler is a middle aged woman who makes a meager living in a retail store. When one night she is waiting for the bus to go home there appears to be creatures emerging from the sewer. Alarmed and scared to death, she runs back to the store she works in to hide while the people outside and in the bus are brutally attacked, Unbeknownst to her she has witnessed something she should not have been able to see, which is demons. Now she must make a choice as to learn to deal with her new abilities, which are very, very rare, or ignore them and become prey to the evil demons who want her captured. This book was so intense and exciting. I absolutely loved the characters, their personalities and their determination.

Good plot and I like the world they created. But the FMC was whiny and useless. I’m guessing the author is trying to make her realistic and give her room to grow as she comes into her powers and undergoes training, but she was super whiny. Like, combatively so. I could have easily put up with it for half a book, but got tired of it by the end.

Add in the fact that the series isn’t not on Kindle Unlimited and costs $5/book, and I’m not sure if I’ll continue it. Though I am curious to see how her relationship with the two men comes pass. Currently it’s just attraction and no action, so it might not grow until book 3 at this rate.

If Sadie was 14 I could understand her utter inability to act like an adult. As a 40 year old woman, not so much. Whine! Argue! Complain! Whiiiiiiine! The premise is Great, but Sadie is too stupid, self centered, stupid, argumentative, stupid, and Irritating (and have I said stupid?) to bear. "Transport me, doofus!" Really?!?!) Terribly disappointing, as the idea of the story is really good, but I gave up at chapter 15 as I don't see her growing up and acting like an adult any time soon. She irritated me enough she gave me a headache! Terribly disappointed in Eve.

Two stars only because of the premise of the demon story, else it would be one star.

I really wanted to like this and I did up until the MC started acting like a juvenile. When she ask one of the guys if they weren’t going to try to talk her into something, it went downhill from there. Also, the author stated at the beginning that the demons couldn’t be out in sunlight, but less than halfway through that rule suddenly change. Really irritates me when rules for the bad guys keep changing, basically making them omnipotent. i’m going to try the next book, but I don’t have a lot of hope for it.

That was some fast-paced, edge of your seat, story telling! Sadie is living her normal, regular, life, and then everything busts wide open and she is thrown into the middle of chaos. And that chaos comes with people, worlds, and creatures she didn’t even consider existed. Things aren’t settled yet, as one situation being handled has created so much more to be done. Loved it and can’t wait for more!!!!!

This starts out really fun. The woman seems like a bit TSTL but mostly because she isn't believing everything she is seeing. I really enjoyed it as a fast read that was a bit of fluff but most UF with a possible romance in the future. The ending left a lot of questions that felt a little cliffy but wasn't a cliffhanger as they did catch the bad and saved the girl. So really good read 4 stars.

Sadie's whole world is turned upside down when she sees demons. Cain a reaper comes to her rescue and he realizes that she is special. He takes her back to the castle to see what magic she possesses. They get called back to her hometown and end up fighting a bunch of demon attacks. The demons realize Sadie is special too and try to kidnap her. Cain and Vance must save her before she is sacrificed. This was a good book and I enjoyed it!

Meh. It’s fine. The MC whines a lot and is ridiculously stubborn. The story was more about setting up a love triangle. People are being slaughtered because of her and she’s still obsessing about her hot protectors. I wanted to like an older heroine however she acts like the typical 20 something, naive, sassy troupe of other books. I wanted her to learn about her powers but it skips that and leaves her helpless and bumbling for the entirety of the book. I will not continue with the series.

This was such a nice little short read. I honestly loved that the FMC was 40. It felt so refreshing to read about someone who isn’t in her early twenties discovering herself for the first time.

The story itself was good. Not a new favourite and not something I will be shouting about forever, but I had a good time with it. It kept me interested and I enjoyed the ride. Solid 3 stars from me.

I enjoyed this read. Want to read the whole series but I don’t like reverse harem or M/F/M books. I prefer a verified love interest. So, I probably won’t be finishing this series. I loved everything else about it just not the two love interests!

Really Good Story

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed Sadie! Funny, quirky and I like Cain and Vance. A fun adventure with magic and some possible romance thrown in. I can’t wait until the next book.

Where on earth did Eve get the idea of this stupid character? Ok maybe no stupid but weak and in so much denial she comes across as stupid

Other than that the story itself was good just like her other books

fun, quick read

I always love Eve Langlais’ stories. She always has characters full of snark, and scenes that make you giggle. The characters in this one are fun, and the storyline is interesting.

Overall, I'd give this series four stars. The plot, while sometimes seeming a bit random was somewhat refreshing and came together at the end. All in all I had a good time reading this and will be sure to check out more series by the author

hmmm

Usually a big fan of this author but did not find Sadie a likeable character nor the situations she was in when people got slaughtered. Not sure if it was an off reading day but struggled with the book and Sadie and doubtful I’ll pursue tge series. Disappointing .

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. I don't even know where to begin. Just avoid this. Who knows, maybe the series will get better, but I won't be finding out.
