OVERALL OPINIONS The story is delightful and the rhyming was perfect, I loved it! I think we all can relate to times we are lost and do not know what we want to do in life, or debate about whether our dream is the right one. The 3D style of illustrations is very colourful throughout and reminds me of Julia Donaldson’s children’s stories when they were turned into 3D animated short films. The emotions of the characters are very expressive, you can tell exactly what is going through Zolemina’s mind (if the thought bubbles are not there – my favourite of these is the cute image of Zolemina sharing cheese with a mouse!). It was also very endearing that the author Ania dedicated it to her own cat Zoey who prefers music to catching mice.
The premise of the story, a cat who dreams of dancing, is very reminiscent of a story I read as a child called “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae, a well-known British children’s author. This was about a giraffe called Gerald who yearns to dance at the Jungle Dance but, due to his thin legs, finds it very difficult. Eventually, with the help of an unlikely friend, a cricket, he gets the confidence to do his own dance. This is much like in this story where a cat and bird become unlikely friends.
Indeed, Andreae’s books were something my parents often read to me, from “Commotion in the Ocean” (my favourite!) to “The Lion Who Wanted to Love”. I adored stories about animals.
This refreshing take on the idea is lovely to see, and allows a whole new generation of children, especially outwith the UK, to read something different with a new style that harkens back to the past. Children and parents alike who enjoyed Andreae’s work will enjoy Danylo’s too!
A cat who was told you can’t dance but wanted to do something creative went on a journey of discovery trying different artistic activities. Eventually the cat found a friend who generous gift gave the cat the chance to follow their dream. A rhyming tale, bright and colourful.
