My thoughts: 📱16% 42:13 about 5 minutes into Episode 2 - I was hoping to love it but was prepared for whatever. I do not love it but I do not dislike it either, it's a little corny but good enough to listen to in the car.
This was up and down. It didn't pick up until the show started in Episode 2. The guys were funny the girls were not and it broke several rules so it's not a romance, I was expecting one.
All the women in this book were super selfish. I loved the voice actors, especially the guy who voiced the female MC’s brother, plus all the sound effects, but the story was not it for me.
Wanted to start with I LOVED the voice actors. They did a great job.
But I hated the characters in this so bad. NGL it was a great look at how obsessions can really ruin your life or friendships because holy crap how are any of these people still friends after this?
Alicia has serious main character energy and is definitely a man-centered woman. She literally dragged her friends into this thing and then was willing to ditch the whole plan the first day the moment she had one good date. Every second was about her finding love with every guy who so much as SMILED at her and she was exhausting. I do think she at least had some growth by the end since she didn't want to marry Michael and was instead prioritizing her career.
Melissa was an awful person. She was obsessed with furthering her career to the detriment of her friends. Who makes an escape room out of your friends room?! WITH HER JOURNAL? HER REAL JOURNAL? THAT THE DUDE READ OUT LOUD AND MADE FUN OF HER FOR?! Like girl wut.
Candy was the least annoying person but even she was exhausting by the end. Like girl at least have a convo with a dude before you just end years of a relationship. Jamal didn't seem like a bad dude at all.
The brother, I forget his name, was obsessed with sponsors to the point where everything he wore was sponsors and he booked a cruise without even asking his sister about her availability that left like the next day. Like dude. Chill.
This is, despite its title, not a romance, tho it does revolve around the MC's obsession with finding true love. It's a beautifully produced, excellently voice-acted modern version of a radio show, and it's as messy as the reality tv shows it's both inspired by and gently mocking. The basic plot is: struggling actress gets her entertainment industry friends to help her star in a reality tv dating show. I was frustrated by how immature most of the principle characters were--for people in their thirties, they were terrible at communicating-- but it is fun. There are some insightful things about relationships, and some great monologues taken from classic Black romantic movies in between all the drama. The MC and her bffs need group counseling.
If you’re into reality, television shows this book is for you. With that said this book felt unfinished and there was no growth for any of the characters but the voice actors did a phenomenal job, and I found myself laughing out loud majority of the time. If they came out with a sequel, I would definitely be listening.
This was not for me. I loved Love at First Psych so I tried this and it was not nearly the same. I couldn't find any redeeming qualities in the characters, maybe Candy . . . They're all mean to each other and self centered.
Holds you attention the whole time and makes the laugh out loud. The mc brother was hilarious!!! I really wanna hear more books read by him! The story was more like a show, didn’t read like a book and everyone had different voices. I loved it but the story itself wasn’t amazing.
I unexpectedly enjoyed this book and laughed a lot. The voice actors were good and felt real. All 3 of the main girls are a bit selfish, but I feel like that proves good writing. If you can actually make me feel a certain way about the characters.
A little chaotic and fast-paced but funny and not too on the nose. As much as it's about Aleasha trying to find love, it's about her friendships with Melissa and Kandi. All I could picture is Issa Rae and Anthony Anderson. This would make a great tv show.
Listened to this one While the performances were great by the actors, the story was lack luster. The women were a horrible example of friends to each other. They were all selfish and cared nothing about each other’s situations and feelings.
I really like this i was hooked by the first five minutes. I love the commentary. Listening to the group of friends remind me of my own.Spoiler, the names for the dudes...had me!! the first date Jason(Missing in action. Gone without a trace) So entertaining. I need more by Alesha Renee
This was such a good listen for me once it said reality show and Pretty Vee. It was giving vh1 2000s dating shows and I loved every minute of the shade and drama.
I love that it was more of a production. The sound effects and score were fun to add to the listening experience. I don’t know what I expected but I know it was more. The dating show fiasco was funny. Those monologues were a cute idea but they short. I was thinking she was going to give us a little more as an actress but it never quite got there,l. I was for sure someone was gonna call that out in the story. I was not a big fan of any of the women. It had me wondering how either of them were friends at all.
