In an army in love with abbreviations, it stands for volunteer indefinite, signifying the commitment to remain on active duty beyond one’s obligation. As the Vietnam War odyssey of 1LT Jif Miles continues, he suffers a devastating blow when tragedy strikes his unit. But he soldiers on in a new assignment with 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). With the end of his one-year tour approaching, Jif’s decisive actions prevent a different sort of tragedy, the aftermath of which leads to a reaffirming life decision about his future in the Army. He soon finds himself near the Cambodian border as 1st Cav confronts tenacious NVA forces intent on seizing Saigon.
A lifelong student of history, William Peter Grasso served in the US Army and is retired from the aircraft maintenance industry. His devotion to all things historical, military, and aviation remains unabated and continues to inspire his fiction.
I was surprised how quickly I slid into this topic. Grass is a great writer. That is my opinion. First is the story catches your attention by the pace and flow how matches every sentence because it so easily dishes the story. Never missing a beat. The story includes every detail of characters thoughts action and we can envision the acts of war. It provides many details of political, leadership and state of mind in soilders. I cannot ever claim to ever speak to this brave men who are the true warriors who have direct war experiences. No can anyone if they have never been in war. But these books do create a good back story to offer good read.
As grunts in Vietnam, Firebases were seen as an escape from the life we lived. We only experienced the cannon-cockers life for few days, then we returned to our own private hell. We always appreciated the support we got. Unless we were on a firebase when it was attacked, we didn’t know what that was like. The author takes us on a complete tour from the laying of the base piece to the dreaded call- beehive, beehive, beehive. GREAT READ
Grasso delivers yet another masterclass in how to write compelling plot both on and off the battlefield. Jif Miles continues to excel as a junior officer and combat leader even as the Army starts to show the first cracks of the coming crisis of leadership and morale with the ever increasing influx of draftees. CIA agent Sylvie Bergerac also plays a larger role in this book in the hunt for the "bamboo pentagon." Plus, any time the beehive rounds come out, I'm all in
Well, it was a great read as was the one’s before it. I loved them all. I’m a Vietnam Vet but a Door Gunner, not an Artillery Man. Still, I love the characters as well as the action. I like Jif’s new girlfriend and can hardly wait for the next book. Mr. Grasso is a great Author. I have enjoyed all his books. I recommend this series to all who served anywhere in Combat.
I have read all Mr Grasso's books about the Brothers Moon and Jock/Jif Miles family published so far since they're so darned good. I hope he keeps his creative juices flowing! Perhaps Jif and Marti will produce a son to keep the saga going through Desert Storm and beyond.
Being a USMC Butter Bar reef myself during the Viet Nam era, I enjoyed reading the novels that followed the growth of Jif Miles! Grasso did a lot of research and explained the complicated steps of indirect fire support for friendly forces! I will certainly buy book 5 of this series.
Exciting and well written, William Peter Grass continues the " Miles" Vietnam books. The combat is believeable and the characters easy to love and dislike others. Another great read and I am waiting for the next book.
Excellent book! I've enjoyed this series. The author definitely keeps you interested and the storyline is very believable. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
The story continues. I like that the series picks up in a logical sequence and shows Jif maturing throughout. The author captures the military mentality of the early 70s well. CYA and stoners.
The further story of JIF Miles and artillery during Vietnam. This one ends with the results of the 1968 election. I can smell the coast in the North and the mountains west of Saigon. Highly recommend
Another great read, starts off a little slow and has its up beat points then kinda slows down again but picks back up. Looking forward to Miles actions in the next book
This story of Vietnam brings an understanding as to what it was like to be there. Letter Grasso is an excellent writer and my only wish was he could write faster!
