Westport: Lizzie #1

Dangerous Deeds

Rate this book
When one door closes, another opens… or falls off its hinges.

They say that love is blind. Sure, they weren’t necessarily talking about old houses at the time, but that’s the story I’m sticking with. And I like that theory a whole lot better than the one about me losing my mind.
I knew that buying a fixer upper I’d be stumbling into an unknown abyss of demolition, dust and unfathomable costs, but I never expected to find an engagement ring and letters of forbidden love hidden under the attic floorboards. Nor did I expect the lazy cat, or the drop-dead gorgeous handyman. And I definitely didn’t predict the stalker.

As the renovation begins and the house starts to slowly return to its former glory, the letters dog my dreams. Who is the mysterious penman? Why was their love forbidden? And who is trying so hard to keep me from learning the truth about it all?

Working alongside my hunky handyman Riley is proving to be quite the distraction, but I’m determined to solve the puzzle of the long-lost love affair. Only can I restore the house to its former glory, and solve the mystery before my stalker catches up with me? Or will I lose everything...including my life?

Dangerous Deeds is the first book in this light-hearted romantic mystery series. If you like crazy families, fun engaging reads, and a sweet romance, all tied together with a ribbon of danger then you’ll love this first book in The Westport Mysteries.

It started with a noticeable level of wit, punchiness, and flair. It moved quickly. I wanted to know how it finished.

But after a few chapters I had to close the book and walk away. It is the bane of free, downloadable books that writers are convinced that their personal reserve of literary acumen is enough to carry them. They are wrong. Their prose may ooze with cleverness and their story may be solid, but typos, misspellings, empty nouns, excessive modifiers, misplaced prepositions, missing punctuation, and weirdisms on every page trip them up repeatedly. It’s irritating to readers. We know we’ve been offered a draft manuscript, not a book.

I will put up with this to a point. I choose to overlook small infractions—I overlook them all the time. But Ms. Prentice’s book is littered with this stuff, so much so that it gets in the way of what promised to be a good story. Examples:

“I wondered again why I hadn’t bought a bran new house.”
(Should be “brand.”)

“It looks far to lazy to actually catch anything.”
(The word is “too.”)

“Jumping up out of bed and shaking myself off I looked back at Cat fighting the shaking that was threatening to take over my body.”
The cat is fighting the shaking that is threatening to take over the heroine’s body? Not so. Where’s the comma to separate the heroine/speaker from her cat? And why do we need to hear, twice in one sentence, that the speaker is shaking?

“Of course she would, she loved spending other peoples money.”
It’s called an apostrophe.

She switches, all in the same sentence, from past tense to present tense (lack of discipline).

It’s a shame. This promised to be a good read. I feel cheated. You could say that I got what I paid for. But the fact is that some of my newest favorite authors I learned about by downloading their free books—people whose work I would pay for in the future because they brought me so much pleasure.

Ms. Prentice’s work shows promise, but she absolutely must have her work edited before presenting it to the world.

This is a laugh out loud action packed fast paced story that will keep readers engaged and on the edge of your seat as you keep turning the pages.

Lizzie has just purchased a house it is old and run down and yes needs a lot of work but she is determined to get it done, she has decided to work from home and needs the attic fixed up first as that is going to be her office when she starts Lizzie realizes that she is going to need help so she hires handyman Riley who happens to be gorgeous but Lizzie already has a boyfriend but she can look or drool.

Riley jumps in and starts work straight away he finds Lizzie fun and cute and easy to talk too he is single works hard and comes from a great family. He is ever the gentleman and cannot do enough for Lizzie and finds that there is a pull towards this fun loving woman.

Things start to happen when pulling up floor boards an engagement ring and very old letters are found that had belonged to the previous owner of the house Avis who has passed away and Lizzie and Riley are determined to get to the bottom of the mystery but they did not count on stalkers and break and enters and danger around a lot of corners, this ring holds a lot of secrets and there are people who will go to any lengths to stop them from being revealed.

This is the first book by MS Prentice that I have read but it won’t be the last she has bought to life a cast of endearing characters that had me laughing and there are those nasty ones that are out to cause trouble and of course the journey for Lizzie and Riley has so many ups and downs in it. I loved Lizzie the girl who comes first in class with foot in mouth disease that will have you cracking up with laughter and Grandma Mabel is just the best Lizzie’s family will keep the laughs and love coming as well, I do highly recommend this story.

I enjoyed this book so much, there was a smile on my face through much of it, as Riley says it’s never dull when Lizzie and her family are around.

Lizzie is a fabulous character, she’s completely real, has issues like the rest of us and isn’t on the small side as she points out several times. When Lizzie buys an old house to renovate it brings with it unexpected problems and a mystery of a hidden ring and letters, but it also brings Riley the seriously hot handyman. Riley is gorgeous from the beginning and not just in looks. Diving right into the mystery with Lizzie so begins a hilarious but scary at times adventure to find the owner of the ring.

Grandma Mabel is just fabulous I’m not sure how I’d go if she were my grandma, but I wish I thought I’d be as outrageous as she is when I’m older (maybe something to aim for).

Before I read this book, I read the one after it and therefore I almost knew what will happen. But, that in no way diluted the pleasure I got from reading this book.

The pace was neither show nor fast, it was rightly paced for me to enjoy all the situations. Laughing with Lizzie and getting angry on her behalf when the situation demanded it.

Reading about Lizzie’s crazy family that loved each other to death was so much fun to read. How they may not agree with the choices a family member makes but always stand behind them to support in what they decided. Families today could learn so much from this to let everyone in the family lead their own lives.

Being one of five, the binding of the siblings was also something that I could easily relate too.

The mystery wasn’t anything over the top but seeing that the story talked about everyday people, having a stalker was a big deal. And the portrayal of curiosity killed the cat was amazingly done.

Lest I forget, religious zealots have always been there and probably there always and this story shows how that is detrimental to the society.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

don’t bother

I’m sorry I did have a go at reading this. It has sexual innuendo and blasphemy and I’d only read a few pages at that, I imagine it would only get more and more so. No mystery at that point either. Don’t know what audience his was written for, it can imagine any one really liking this often vulgar story.

A Fun Read: 2.

This book is a entertaining, funny, book and I found myself picking it up if I only had time for a page. I laughed, I even had tears and I had a smile on my face while loving Lizzie’s personality. Great book. Cannot wait to start book #2.

Lizzie is having a mid-life crisis so she buys a house at an auction, a really bad fixer-upper. On her first night there, it appears someone is in her bedroom. She hires a carpenter to begin the renovations, and together they find a ring worth tens of thousands of dollars and 10 letters, written in the 1920s. Then things begin escalating, and Lizzie and Riley both realize she is in danger, but neither know why.

The book is really interesting and I plan to read the second mystery sometime.

Picked this up recently and found myself picking it up to read it every time I had a few minutes to spare. I felt the characters were all so very likable and I was drawn into Lizzie and her very eclectic family. Will be putting the rest of the series on my wish list!

Lizzie Fuller, age 31, just bought a house and her sister, Molly, is helping her move in. Lizzie is quickly realizing that she has taken on a huge job as the house is old, rundown, and in dire need of restoration. It has evidently come with a cat that Lizzie simply calls Cat.

After an attempt at doing some jobs herself, Lizzie hires a handyman named Riley to help. Oh, and what a man he is! Lizzie has a boyfriend named Scott but the man seems to have a commitment phobia. He’s also bossy and treats Lizzie like a child. Lizzie actually works for him but now, she will be working from home.

Riley and Lizzie find some old letters, a photo, and an engagement ring that had been hidden under the floor boards in one of the rooms in the house. The letters had been written to Avis from Will. Avis owned the house before she died and now Lizzie is determined to find a member of Avis’ family and give them the ring.

But, someone appears to be watching Lizzie and has broken into her house. This makes her feel creepy and she stays at Riley’s for a few nights while it gets investigated. As the story progresses, we find that this is not just a simple case of breaking into someone’s home because they mean serious business.

We meet her Grandma Mabel who has a sex drive that’s going strong in her 80’s. Lizzie’s brother, Danny, is gay and he and his boyfriend, are hairdressers. Danny is a total hoot.

This story grows as the tension builds but it is often broken with laugh out loud moments with Lizzie’s family. Come join in and enjoy this book. You are guaranteed to find the book with a big, satisfied smile on your face.

This book has been revised and rereleased as Dangerous Deeds. It is a delightful story about Lizzie Fuller who has moved back to her home town and purchased a small house that is a lot more derelict than she remembered. But she will be working remotely at the house, so best to get it fixed up and get on with things. She calls a handyman, whose name she found on an ad on a bulletin board.
Riley, the handyman, is a wonder to behold and the house starts to look better as he finishes the attic which is Lizzie's home office. Between jobs in the attic he comes across a box of letters and a diamond ring hidden beneath the floorboards. Meanwhile Lizzie has the feeling she is being watched, and her house is broken into, and she is followed by a black sedan. Riley joins her in sleuthing to try and figure out exactly what is going on.
There are many funny interludes with her family members that included her mom and dad, Grandmother Mabel, sister Molly, brother Danny, and his partner Andrew. Basically it is a mystery with a lot of lighthearted moments. At times Lizzie is at the mercy of not nice people, but it is Riley who always manages to come to her rescue. It certainly is a story that you don't want to stop reading and I had a hard time putting it down. It has many storylines that feature the various family members as well as the house connected mystery. I loved the way Ms Prentice wove them all together to make a compelling story that kept me guessing until the end. A lovely book that I recommend highly.

Dangerous Deeds by Beth Prentice
"The Westport Mysteries, Lizzie Book 1
This book by Beth Prentice made all kinds of emotions comes out - from laughter to crying to happiness to anger to whatever is left. I could not put it down!
Lizzie has a relationship with Scott. Lizzie bought a house that was old and run down and tugged at her heartstrings. All Lizzie needed was a very good looking handy man. She got more then she expected with the house as she got a cat, a ring, and letters.
The ring was a beautiful engagement ring that belonged to Avis and the letters revealed a love between her and Will. They were found under the attic floorboards. The cat had belonged to Avis.
The mystery started there and continued through the full book. You will find out how the story unfolds with the mysterious black sedan that kept being parked opposite her driveway.
Lizzie closes her bedroom door each night and finds that each morning it is standing open with no idea why. Lizzie wanted to find the rightful owner of the ring, but what would it mean for her. What happens as she takes the journey to find that owner and redo the house, try to see if anything could be permanent with Scott who she had been seeing for a couple of years. Does Lizzie have a stalker and does he catch up with her and does she come out of it alive or does she lose everything?

Lizzie is 31 and having a life crisis. Result from the crisis is the purchase of a run down house. What was she thinking. She was thinking it looked better at the auction. First order of business hire a handyman.

When Lizzie meets her handyman face to face for the first time she is stunned. Man is he a hot hunk of burning love. Wowzers!!!! She does not know how she is going to get any work done with him around. But when her boyfriend unexpectedly drops by she realizes that she is lucky to have her beautiful boyfriend and that no one as hot as the handyman would ever want her.

As the house project moves forward, many odd things begin to happen and they are all centered around a priceless object found during the renovations. As a stalker makes his self known, Lizzie begins to fear for her safety. Is the stalker after her or the secret? Will Lizzie survive this renovation?

This is the first book in the series and I absolutely loved it. A cozy mystery to the core this PG-13 book is perfect for those who love a clean mystery with a dose of sexy hot romance. This book has it all, crazy grandma, love triangle, danger and a mystery to solve. This book will keep you on your toes and guessing till the very end. With amazing characters and fun wit, this book is sure to capture your attention and your heart. I cannot wait to see what is in store next for our friend Lizzie.

First off, I mostly enjoyed the story.

Lizzie Fuller is a petite 30 something year old who had a early midlife crisis and bought a fixer-upper. She has not the greatest boyfriend in the world, and a handyman to fix up her new house that neither one is willing to make the first move or admit they like each other. She also has, at least in the beginning of the story, a very bad case of Foot-in-the-Mouth disease that makes for a very fun filled and humorous moments. I dare you not to laugh during this story. Oh yea, she also has a stalker, and a very expensive, very old ring that was found buried under the floorboards.

The story has developed characters and a good plot line.

The author spends a little too much time on the fantasies and wants of the main character. But there is enough of actual story line surround it that it doesn't detract too much. There is also one scene involving the dog (Harper) which is inappropriate and unnecessary for the story. Having Lizzie's gay brother give relief to 10-year-old rescue dog did nothing to further the story. I almost stopped reading at that point.

This is one of those books that you cant put down! I began to read it late in the evening and was up until 4:10 am because I had to finish it right away. There are moments that will catch your breath, times you can feel the pain the main character, Lizzie is having. I love her because she is strong even though she is a bit insecure, like we all can be. Her family is a mix of "crazy" but wonderful lol. This is so well written that you can zoom right through it. Her life is in turmoil when she buys this old house and unusual things begin to happen. Who is this stranger in the black sedan? And why is he following her? Why isnt her sexy handyman that she hired to help renovate her house, not married? I am so glad to see this is the first in a series because I cant wait to read more about Lizzy, Riley, and the whole crazy and fun family members. This is one of those books that will stay with you for awhile after you are done reading it. Looking forward to the next book!

What a fantastic story by Beth Prentice, I loved it!! The book is written from Lizzie’s perspective and she is hilarious! Lizzie is an accountant, in a committed relationship and she hit a premature mid-life crises at 31, so she bought a house in need of TLC. Unfortunately, it needs more TLC than she can give it. In comes handyman and superhero Riley, who is very good looking and great with his hands…
Without giving away the story, the house hides more secrets than they bargained for and soon Lizzie and Riley embarks on a sleuthing mission trying to get to the bottom of their discovery. Danger, laughter, romance and mystery is in the air!
Loved every minute of this book and highly recommend it to any romance lover. This is a great book to help you relax and it will keep a smile on your face.

This is a new to me author. I'm glad I read this book, in places it had me laughing out loud but also it was a bit jumpy in places.
There were many things happening in this story Lizzie thought that life was passing her by, her boyfriend wanted a trophy wife but could she be that wife? She decided to buy an old house and spend her time making it her own. She didn't realise until it was too late what a big job this was. Step in hot, hunky handyman Riley.
The mystery was all around her what with the black car, the treasure found and the cat her life in the house could not be boring. Lizzie had a rollercoaster ride of good bad and downright evil, but she found her way through to happiness.
A happy ever after book that was well worth a read.

I really loved this book; stayed up past midnight to see how it all ends. I wasn't disappointed.

I found this a very easy book to read; Ms Prentice's writing style is engaging, her characters (both good & bad) are believable and I enjoyed the balance between the romance, the mystery and the thriller aspects. The pace was also believable; no insta-love or insta-sex here.

I just wanted to also mention how well I thought the mystery/thriller plot lines worked in this book; I watch a lot of detective shows and was impressed at the standard in this 'romance' book.

I will be looking out for more books by Ms Prentice and adding them to my Amazon wish list. ;-)

Dear Author. What I really want to say, with much straightforwardness, is I've just finished reading DANGEROUS DEEDS and the only thing on my mind is good job. The story is smooth flowing with enough pacing which kept me hooked. You have done a wonderful job fleshing out the characters in this book and I was bowled over by the unfolding drama, intrigue and suspense. The only fault I found not linked with the overall storytelling, is the grammatical errors I found throughout the book. Regardless, Ms. Prentice, your writing had me absorbed from start to finish so much that I can't wait to read your next cozy mystery.

This is a really good little story, with a really in-depth plot and characters who are not one dimensional. The protagonist has a really crummy boyfriend, a to die for gorgeous handyman and a crazy stalker who really is rather creepy. How she manages to side-step trouble and stay alive is a really edge of the seat ride, and makes for an unforgettable read. I'd highly recommend this one, and am already working on book 2 in the series!

I really enjoyed this book. Ms Prentice was an unknown author for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a book full of funny characters - including a sex starved granny - and a great story line.
The story revolves around a house that is in need of some TLC - much like Lizzie, the new owner of said house. What she gets is a ring and love letters, a hunky tradesman and a nosy neighbourhood.
Ms Prentice writes a great story.

I bought this book at the Australian Romance Readers event in Brisbane this year and it's my first by this author.

It was a really easy read, there was a couple of different things going on but not too much that it gets confusing, just enough to follow Lizzoes life. Whilst I thought I knew the outcome there were a couple of twists I wasn't expecting at all.

I enjoyed this and will look for other books by the other, especially ones that continue Lizzies story.
