Angela Pretty has good reason to dislike Valentine’s Day. Last year, her boyfriend gifted her a non-stick frying pan. This year, he broke up with her.
But when her madcap father decides to launch his latest business venture—a restaurant in the middle of the Devonshire countryside—on Valentine’s Day itself, Angela has no choice but to make the long journey there from London. Even if the rain is biblical. And even if her ancient Volkswagen Beetle might not quite be up to the task…
Gruff, bearded, man-mountain Adam believes Valentine’s Day is cursed. It was the day his wife left him. But when a woman comes running through the rain for help with a broken down car, he can’t refuse to step in. And maybe, just maybe, she might be the one who lifts his Valentine’s Day curse…
A sweet-with-heat cosy rural romance—with a hint of Beauty and the Beast.
Rachel Rowan lives in England, with her husband, children, rescue cat, and an embarrassing amount of undone housework. She writes smart, steamy romcoms with lots of heat, humour, heart, and all the things she loves, such as:
I really enjoyed this story 'Rescuing Beauty' by Rachel Rowan. Angela is a shy woman with a small amount of self-esteem because her sisters and ex-boyfriend always made her feel less than perfect. She travels into the English countryside to visit her father and see his newest project, a barn converted into a restaurant. But on the way there her car breaks down and she becomes stranded in the dark, cold, and rainy countryside at night. Because of a barking dog, she literally bumps into a gorgeous man who brings her into his home and he and his sister care for her and retrieve her car from the road. She is instantly attracted to the man, but she cannot see that he is interested in her because of her low self-esteem. While she is with the man and his sister, they slowly help her understand that she is beautiful just as she is, even if she doesn't look like her sisters. And she comes to understand that in the man's opinion she is beautiful.
I have actually read this story twice now and loved it both times. Rescuing Beauty is a beautiful and sweet rom-com. Angela has just been dumped right before Valentines Day by her dusty bf and is driving to visit her father to help him with a restaurant launch. Now, of course this is during a pretty horrific rainstorm and she ends up crashing her car and comes upon a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. There she meets Adam and his sister who give her shelter in the storm. Angela is also dealing through some self-image issues and Adam helps her to see herself in a different light. Adam is this big burly kind of man who actually has a rose flower business and a heart of gold who felt like Valentines day was cursed and he was destined to be alone. This felt like a loose retelling of Beauty and The Beast.
Overall, great short read. This has humor, steam and a HEA.
A short and sweet, stand-alone novella set in the English countryside. Angela’s car breaks down in the middle of nowhere on a dark, rainy night and when she goes looking for help she runs into local rose horticulturist, Adam.
This has everything I like to see in a rom com novella: lovable characters, adorable dog, no melodrama, great pace, and a dabble of spice.
Rachel Rowan’s character dialog is tied for my favorite from an indie author. Her characters’ dialog always feels natural, makes me giggle, and seems organically swoony not forced to check a box.
If the fall weather puts you in the mood for a cozy read, I absolutely recommend this.
Sometimes short stories lack emotion and you don’t get to know the characters. This book is defiantly not one of those. I really, really enjoyed Angela and Adam’s story set in Devon. Adam had been hurt by past relationships breaking down and very much kept himself to himself. Angela had very low esteem and was a bit of a people pleaser. This book tells of how they got together, not all plain sailing but a really lovely HEA. If you are looking for a short but beautiful story then I thoroughly recommend this book. Thank you Rachel Rowan ❤️
It isn’t a long story and I think it could be absolutely fantastic if it was longer and held a bit more suspense. That being said, I enjoyed it, it’s right up my street.
