Wisteria House could be their haven of protection—or make them a target for the lawless.
Nearly destroyed by his wife before she destroyed herself, airmail pilot Davis Rutledge plans his future safely alone. But when an old friend is arrested courtesy of a violent KKK leader, Davis steps in to try to help her avoid an undeserved fate. Soon, however, she’s the one helping him in ways he could never have imagined.
As a successful journalist, Meg Woodhouse has never shied from a challenge or doubted her capabilities—until now. Her secret crush on the silent, stalwart pilot is the only crack in the walls she’s built to protect her shattered heart. But with the Scopes Monkey Trial captivating the nation, and ruthless Klan leaders continuing to evade justice, she must choose between a fight for truth or a future of love.
Will newly-uncovered secrets bring peace to Wisteria House’s troubled past or destroy its hope for the future?
Born and raised in the Atlanta area, Jennifer's debut historical fiction work, Some Through the Fire, is set in that very city during the tumultuous events of 1917-1920. Jennifer has worked professionally as a tutor, ghostwriter, editor, and administrative assistant, including 10 years in vocational ministry. She and her husband Christopher live in the Atlanta area with their four young children. Jennifer stays busy writing, editing, homeschooling, and homemaking.
I read All Now Mysterious and was blown away by the excellence. The book was delightful to read, fascinating in its history, engaging in its prose, thoughtful in its theology - in truth, everything I believe Christian fiction should be. It was like the best of the best in all these arenas. This series is better quality than most other Christian fiction coming out these days. Jennifer Q. Hunt should be on every Christian fiction reader's radar by this point, if not their shelves. I recommend starting with Through Thorny Ways, but don't put it off!
Hunt does not shy away from difficult topics, and handles them with dignity and courage, shining light into the darkness. I've been wanting to read Davis's story since the early pages of Through Thorny Ways (book 1), and his romance with "That Woodhouse Woman" does not disappoint. Meg and Davis complement each other so well. I both grinned and teared up countless times. The reader's relationship with Christ will be strengthened as a result of this excellent book.
Jennifer Q. Hunt’s books are literary gems, and I wish even more people knew about them!
As much as I enjoyed the first book, I think I might just like this one a smidge more.
I felt edified, my faith refreshed, and the quotes on motherhood and wifehood truly ministered to me in my own walk and roles.
“Sometimes what we think we want when we are young changes over time. In the best marriages, you blend your desires to complement each other; you make one another the best you each can be.”
Thank you to the author for following the callings the Lord has on your life, of being a wife, a mother, and a writer. Even when it was hard, or you felt like giving up. The lessons you’ve learned, which you were able to put into words in the form of a story, have opened my eyes and renewed my spirit!
“Children are a gift, not a prize. They aren’t something you earn by perfectly learning the lessons God has for you.”
“Not every woman gets to be a wife or a mother. For those who do have the privilege of one or both of those roles, it is never ‘just.’ A woman is never ‘just a wife’ or ‘just a mother.’ Those roles—or the lack thereof—will shape and define her in ways no career ever could.”
And brava to the narrator, Leigh Foster! Her narration is always on point!
My mom is an audiobook girlie, so when All Now Mysterious came out on Audible, I told her about this series and she immediately binged-read them and waited for me to finish so we could talk about them together. She would give this 5 stars, too, if she had a Goodreads account!
This is a must read for fans of Christian historical fiction. It has action, mystery, romance, faith and family. I loved how I got to know each character and got a full picture of their dilemmas. I can't wait for the drama to continue.
All Now Mysterious is nothing short of remarkable. It’s not just a sequel; it’s an elevation. From the first page, I was immersed in a world so vivid, so hauntingly real, that putting the book down felt like stepping out of another era. Jennifer Q. Hunt masterfully weaves suspense, romance, and faith into a narrative that stays with you long after the last page.
The Ku Klux Klan, the Scopes Monkey Trial, and the lingering wounds of war—these are the challenges the characters must navigate, yet it’s their personal battles that truly shine. Davis Rutledge and Meg Woodhouse are the beating heart of this story. Davis, scarred and wary, is a man trying to rebuild his life piece by piece, while Meg, a fearless journalist with a tender vulnerability, faces her own struggles of the heart. Watching these two grow—individually and together—was as moving as it was inspiring.
What sets this book apart is its ability to balance heavy themes with unflinching hope. Hunt doesn’t shy away from the darkness of history, but she threads the narrative with the light of redemption and the transformative power of faith. Davis and Meg’s faith journeys feel authentic—raw and sometimes messy—but always deeply rooted in truth.
And can we talk about the side characters? Arilee, Adam, Nat, and Brax bring Wisteria House alive with their own stories and struggles. Brax, in particular, intrigued me with his layered complexity—I’m desperate to see how his story unfolds next!
Hunt’s attention to historical detail is unparalleled. Whether it’s the tension surrounding the Scopes Monkey Trial or the insidious presence of the Klan, every element is meticulously researched and seamlessly woven into the plot. This isn’t just a story—it’s a vivid snapshot of the 1920s, complete with its beauty and its brokenness.
The romance is subtle but potent. It’s not about grand gestures or instant chemistry; it’s about two people learning to trust, to heal, and to lean on God as they navigate their fears and failures. Their love story is as real as it gets—imperfect, slow-burning, and full of patience and grace.
Jennifer Q. Hunt has crafted a book that’s as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. It’s a story of courage, resilience, and faith in the face of unimaginable trials. If Through Thorny Ways wrecked my heart, All Now Mysterious shattered it—in the best way—and reminded me of the incredible hope we have in Christ.
This is one I’ll reread again and again, not just for the plot but for the deeper truths it carries. Highly recommended to anyone who craves historical fiction with substance, heart, and a faith-filled core.
Once again, Jennifer Q. Hunt has written a sockdolager book. This was my first read of the year, and what a great one to begin with!
All Now Mysterious was a highly anticipated 2024 release for me, and it did not disappoint.
Davis and Meg's story was one I was dying to be able to continue after the way Through Thorny Ways ended. I have to say, I wasn't expecting quite such an "on the edge of my seat" plotline, but, wow!! Talk about a riveting plot, involving the Ku Klux Klan.
Meg and Davis' love story was not an easy one without bumps in the road, but it was unique and I enjoyed the way it all turned out and how it came about. It was unique and refreshing, and was a great portrayal of God's work in a marriage between two very different hearts.
I love how Hunt includes the other siblings as prominent side characters as well, and we get to stay up to date on what is going on in their lives with their own POV. I still love Arilee and Adam, and it was beautiful to watch their love grow through the trials and blessings they faced together. I was also encouraged by their choice to stand for right no matter the outcome.
And Brax. Oh, Brax. I cannot wait for his book. That hymn lyric quoting, little brother who is such a trouble maker. I got so mad at him for the mistake he made, but I imagine his story is shaping up to be my favorite trope...a man with a past. No one is too lost that God can't redeem.
I enjoyed learning more about the Scopes Monkey trial too. I love how I can always expect to learn some historical fact, whether universally known or more obscure. The author puts a lot of work into researching her books and it is clear she loves what she does.
With so much that has happened and more to look forward too...the Wisteria House legacy lives on.
I received an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own and voluntarily shared.
Hunt does it again! She has such a talent for assembling just the right words together to spin an unforgettable tale. Facing some of the darkest parts of history with sensitivity and grace, this faith-filled romance is full of exciting twists and turns, with a thread of hope tying it all together. I can’t wait for the next one!
This is a great book! I love books where I learn new things or understand something about the world in a new way. This book includes thoughtful and fascinating glimpses into American history, particularly in its plot lines relating to the KKK and the Scopes Trial. But beyond that, it's also a gripping story, with romance, suspense, and relatable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but tissues were required. I recommend this trilogy to all lovers of Christian historical fiction.
Ok, there was much I liked about this story! First, the faith content was stellar! I also loved all the history. This one had more even than the first book—touching on the KKK, Scopes trial, Atlanta Airports beginnings, and more. So intriguing. I also was happy to see all the characters from the first book again!
I have read other books that have varying POVs. Some have been subpar, but not Jennifer Hunt! All the perspectives worked so well together! I really really liked hearing more from Arilee and Adam—and even Brax! There was also an “bonus” perspective at the end that really was a tease for the next book. I loved it but also am now SO impatient for it to come in September 🤣
The first half of this book was extremely heavy when it came to sexual content (dealing with attempted rape—though nothing happened—,marriage intimacy, plus other things mentioned). Let me be clear: the author was very discreet about all those situations (though I do think personally the married info got a bit tmi a couple times). I think it was just so many issues that I felt a bit bogged down, though I never felt like I needed to stop reading it. I just didn’t think I’d enjoy it as well as the first, but then midway (or maybe a bit before that), the spiritual content picked up, the character development pulled me closer, and I absolutely loved those things.
So as a whole I think this was an exceptional second book. As with the first book, this one was deep and thought provoking. The characters have definitely won my heart (even Brax who has been such a mess!) and the second 1/2 of this book was my favorite! I’m hoping for good things in book 3 and going to give Hunt’s other books a try, too, since there’s a series before this one that has some side characters in it!
**Not recommend for teens/ sensitive readers due to some content about married couples, attempted rape, an affair (mentioned in last book), and also an elicit relationship (also mentioned in the last book, but more details).
Wow! This book blew me away. I went into this one having not read book 1. I would recommend reading them in order as I'm itching to go back and get the backstory now. But it didn't take away from Hunt's talent and her ability to craft characters you want to hug and throttle. The storyline is so rich and layered. A lot to sink your teeth into. So much to enjoy. Real history. Nothing glossed over. Bravo!
Jennifer Hunt weaves the big questions of the Christian faith through this beautifully complex narrative filled with romance, bravery, and family struggle. "Through Thorny Ways" may have captured my heart with Hunt's cast of engaging characters, but "All Now Mysterious" brought new depth to each of them, with the light of Christ shining through their weaknesses. I'm now eagerly awaiting the final installment of the Wisteria House series.
I enjoyed this book immensely, and I'm not a typical reader of historical books. Jennifer's extensive research definitely shows. The characters are well rounded and intriguing. Great read!
Do you ever have those novels that you bookmark in several spots because you want to go back to all of your favorite parts? This is one of those books for me. It is yet another book of Jennifer's that I will be re-reading over and over again. I loved the first book in this series SO much, but I loved this one perhaps a little more. I really enjoy an author that writes a series well, and this is one of my top five favorites series so far. I love seeing characters from the first book, as well as the storyline continue. Jennifer does such an amazing job weaving mystery, suspense, and romance into her stories. I really appreciate the realistic and relatable ways she shows marriage and intimacy, as well as character growth and spiritual arcs. I am always in awe at the way her characters come to life. Her characters always stick with me long after I've finished her books, which makes me re-read them again. :P There were a few plot points that took me by surprise, in a wonderful way, and I appreciated that I didn't see them coming! I can't wait for the third book :) Thank you again, Jennifer, for creating another book that I will adore forever.
This family has me in its clutches. Reading about the Rutledges has me completely invested as if they’re close family friends. The DEPTH of each character is mind-bending. Each character is perfectly imperfect, their growth so strong and genuine, their struggles feel like my struggles. Just WOW. If you’re looking for a book that’s deep, complex, gripping, suspenseful, gritty yet full of God’s faithfulness and goodness in the midst of complete and total turmoil…start this series NOW!
I thoroughly enjoyed the newly released audiobook edition of All Now Mysterious and cannot wait for Wisteria House #3 to be ready! Leigh Foster's narration brings the story to life and makes you feel as if you are immersed in their world. She does an excellent job giving the characters their own distinctive voices that align so well with each of their personalities and her pacing is spot on. Jennifer Q Hunt is a master at dialogue and is so good at showing you what's happening through her words rather than just telling you. I love that this story picks up not long after where book 1 ends and that the whole of book 2 takes place over only a year's time. I like how each chapter starts with the day and date, and that you get to see multiple points of view from different characters. Even though this book is primarily about Davis and Meg's story, it is so satisfying to see more of Adam & Arilee and the children Nat & Macy and other family members. The themes of redemption and forgiveness are so beautifully written, and Jennifer does not shy away from difficult issues during 1925 in the south. There are plenty of hints throughout the book of what is yet to come in book 3, Purest Joys Restored. I'm going to be first in line for that audiobook when it comes out! You can tell a lot of research has gone into the historical fiction that Jennifer writes and I appreciate the lengthy author notes at the end of her stories explaining some of that research. I just love how all of her titles come from hymn lyrics too! I was given a free audio review copy of All Now Mysterious (Wisteria House Book 2). All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Over 90% of the books I read are audiobooks, and I'm thrilled Jennifer Q Hunt's books are coming out with audiobook versions that I am happily adding to my library.
Author Jennifer Q. Hunt has a gift for crafting stories with families who you can’t help but be drawn to and she has done it again in her Wisteria House series. We first met the Rutledge family in Book One which focused on sister Arilee and provided much historical family background and introduced readers to the characters. Since this is a compelling and ongoing family saga, Arilee and Adam’s story also continues here with page-turning drama. However, this book focuses on older brother Davis and how he tries to regroup after his wife’s death while assisting an acquaintance who seeks his help. I appreciate the research background the author delved into with this book and feel like I learned so much about the time period,1925. Not all was rosy during the Roaring Twenties and this book explored some weighty topics including prejudice and the operations of the Klan. Along with the detailed cultural context, I love the uplifting Christian themes intricately woven as part of the story, focusing on the message of salvation, forgiveness and placing trust in God for guidance. While each book has its own conclusion, I would definitely recommend reading this series in order as the background information builds with each novel. Already looking forward to Book Three in the series!
I received an advanced reader copy from the author. A positive review was not required and all opinions stated here are my own.
DAVIS IS THE MAN! This book fulfills all a Jennifer Q. Hunt reader expects and then so so much more. The romance is next level swoony, and the conflicts are gritty and suspenseful. What really got me, though, was how Hunt used her ability to make you fall in love with a character and coupled that with her equally impressive skill of making you hate a bad guy...but she applied them to the SAME character in this one! Emotional whiplash that only a very talented and seasoned author could pull off. I will be reading this one again when I get my paperback.
I was honored to read an advanced copy of this book. A review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Trigger warnings: deals with the Ku Klux Klan, attempted rape off page but is talked about but not in full detail. Deals with corruption in not only law enforcement but in general.
The setting is a few years after the first book, Through Thorny Ways. Meg who made her appearance later in the first book. Her full name Margret Rose Woodhouse is a journalist who is attacked by a KKK dragon. She defends herself but is then arrested for attempted murder.
The book follows Meg and the Rutledge family as they battle against the corruption of the KKK in Atlanta, Georgia during 1925. Meg’s own father is a Klansman (who I think needs to step on a lego) and does not support her. Even says some very horrible comments about her attack to Davis. There is also the romance between Davis and Meg.
There will be parts of this book that will make you mad. It made me mad. But it was stuff that happened, unfortunately. History has many ugly events.
I love this one. Not as much as the first book. There are some answers to a few things that are in the first book. There is persecution of the Christian church from KKK members who have one of the dumbest theologies I have ever heard. The author follow historical events such as D.C. Stephenson who was a real KKK dragon who was convicted of murder and rape. Also, because of the author, I now know a silent film called Wizard of Oz was released in 1925.
I can’t wait for the third book to come out. It won’t release until September so I have a bit of a wait on my hands. Which kind of sucks since the ending had a cliffhanger. I know there will be drama and I can’t wait!
Another great installment in the Wisteria House series. Readers who loved Through Thorny Ways will be eager for this sequel about the Rutledge siblings and another secret revealed while living at Wisteria House. This book mostly focuses on Davis and the reporter we met in the first book: Meg Woodhouse. But there’s plenty of Arilee and Adam and rebellious brother Brax.
As usual with Hunt’s books, we’re thrust right into the time period, this time mid-1920s Atlanta and the events prominent at the time. I was enlightened about so many things I thought I already knew. Which is one of the reasons I love her books because her broad, meticulous research is evident in her writing.
Her deeply-layered characters reveal new facets in this book that we only got a peek at before in the first one. Some of those layers aren’t pretty and that’s where her Christian themes really shine through—not in a trite way. She boldly confronts theological fallacies her characters would have been exposed to at the time and brings them through harrowing circumstances to help them see God’s true character. She overturns their long-held self-lies and shows them who God sees them to be. These revelations are woven so well throughout the story and through each building sub-plot that readers will be engrossed until the final page. This reader certainly was.
*I had the privilege of receiving an early copy of this novel and agreed to leave a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Pa’s voice seemed much stronger than his limbs as he immediately began to pray:
“Lord, thank Thee for this child, an answer to prayer and to a promise Thou made to me as a young man. Give his parents wisdom to raise him in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Grant to him a strong body, a quick mind, and most of all, a heart set upon Thee, that he may follow and serve Thee all the days of his life. When he faces battle, surround him with Thy angels—” Adam sucked in a sharp breath, silently adding his own plea, Oh, Lord, please let him never see war! “—Let him be a blessing always to his parents and grandparents. May he marry a godly woman, and may they together build a home for Thy glory, for the chief end of man is to glo-rify God and enjoy Him forever. May this be the resounding purpose of Adam Joshua Harrison’s life, I pray for the sake of Thy son Jesus, Amen.”
“He’s an hour old, Pa, and you’ve gone through his whole life,” Adam exclaimed, still rubbed wrong by the battle reference.
I love this prayer. This reminds me that we can send prayer to the future. O yes, they had their problems, but the prayers' tgeir mother had prayed for them. God honour it.
Talking is good before marriage, Don't make the same mistakes he had cause of love, I love how God opened her eyes to see how she thought she did not need God but God did shock her to see the error of her ways.
Thank you, Jennifer Q. Hunt for this prayerful book. Prayer works 💪.
Another phenomenal read by Jennifer Hunt. You’ll want to read Through Thorny Ways first to understand the full story. All Now Mysterious centers around Davis and Meg (you met Meg briefly in Through Thorny Ways). However, we still see Adam and Arilee and get more insight into Brax.
Like the first book of the series, this one discusses some heavy topics like infertility, abuse, but most notably, the KKK. While the topics are heavy, the book has so much redemption and forgiveness throughout that you aren’t left with feeling down in the dumps. Some heavy books leave me in a funk for days, but this one doesn’t. It really is fantastic writing, character building, and pacing.
Y’all, that cliffhanger. So glad I have the third book so I can start it today!!!
This was a very good read; definitely more fast-paced & engaging than Book 1. The author has addressed quite some difficult and sensitive topics and done that splendidly. I love the themes of Mercy, forgiveness, self-centredness vs sacrifice, building a godly lineage, growing in faith, pre-marital decisions etc, all under the overarching message of God's providence & mercy. It's really beautiful how much deep messages you can find in this story. Now I can't believe I'm off to search for the 3rd book. 😄
I enjoyed watching Meg and Davis blossom in the Lord and it's amazing how God finds us in the places we least expect once we let go and no matter the pain or past we have been through, the grand weaver can weave it into something beautiful when we let him.
Every character was spot on and amazing even the cat 😁 can't wait to read the third book
I've come to expect amazing things from Jennifer Q Hunt and All Now Mysterious fits the bill.
What you'll find inside: *Continued series, should be read in order *Christian fiction set in Atlanta, Georgia after WWI *Racial tension *Widow and widower
What I loved: *"This world exhausted him with its unending ache and disappointment." *"Davis prayed he’d never fit on an Egyptian cat statue bench wearing fancy pajamas midday on a Saturday." *"When I lived with her, she forbade me reading any kind of novels. Said they led to idleness and profligacy and put foolish notions into girls’ heads.” *"Our marriage is enough.” *“I actually admire you a great deal, but I often express it by being surprised and critical of your few imperfections rather than appreciative of your manifold strengths.” *“That Woodhouse woman” had become “his Meg.” *“I aim to cherish you, my love. It’s high time somebody did, and I’m honored it gets to be me.” *"It’s much harder to accept God’s mysteries than His might.” *"You’ve hurt someone you love, and you can’t fix it, and that’s a terrible punishment all on its own.” *“God has been so good to me, and I love you so very much.”
All Now Mysterious by Jennifer Q. Hunt Book 2 in the Wisteria House Series
This series has me in its grasp. I cannot love these characters any more. The story picks up three years after the first book ends(1925), and the prologue starts off with a life altering event. The central storyline follows Davis Rutledge and Margaret Rose Woodhouse (Meg). Davis is thrown into the middle of Meg’s legal battle when he unexpectedly receives a call from Meg that she is in jail. Meg is a female journalist in the time when women entering a men’s field was not only frowned upon, but dangerous. Now, she’s accused of the attempted murder of KKK leader, Steven Stephenson bringing trouble upon herself and the occupants of Wisteria House.
The KKK storyline is the epitome of a morally derelict antagonist and immerses the reader in the midst of the tension and corruption that surrounded their rise in our nation. It simply left me asking “How could this even happen!?!” and “Who in their right mind…?”. There are also multiple side storylines with returning characters that are equally enthralling, but if I delve into them it would spoil some of the first book if you’ve not had the pleasure of reading it yet.
The battle of evolution in the school system is also included in this novel by including the infamous Scopes trial. This allows the author to address the seriousness Christianity and how there is an eternal difference between being a nominal believer and truly knowing the Truth of God’s Word and having a relationship with Christ as your Savior. Faith, redemption, perseverance, and forgiveness are all central themes of this eloquently written novel.
The author’s writing is unlike any other. She shares the Gospel multiple times without apology throughout this book, but also doesn’t shy away from the truth of sin and the lives of those the claim to enjoy it for a season. Her writing can lean into some of the grittiness of life, but doesn’t go too far, in my opinion, because it’s clearly written with redemption in mind.
I absolutely love this series, and it has quickly become an all-time favorite. I will be reading the next book in the coming weeks. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
It stayed true to the themes established in Through Thorny Ways while delving into the complexities of Davis and Meg. They were incredibly real, facing genuine challenges that could make anyone cry.
I was particularly moved by Meg’s journey as she navigates becoming a stepmom and the tough choice between her career and family. This is a struggle that resonates with many women (and men) today, and Jennifer addressed it with such grace and understanding, showing her not being judged but supported.
Arilee's experience and the portrayal of women dealing with difficult pregnancies were handled with such sensitivity. It was a poignant reminder that life doesn’t always smooth out after finding your "prince charming." (My heart goes out to all the strong and amazing women out there having similar struggles with getting pregnant and having difficult pregnancies)
And that cliffhanger—what a way to leave us eagerly anticipating the next book! I can’t wait to see where the Braxton's story takes us.
I thoroughly enjoyed book 2 in the Wisteria House saga!! “The cross often comes to us in God’s yes as in His no, in our heart’s desires as in its grief. I used to think pain always came from loss, but it can as easily come with gain.” All Now Mysterious is an excellent follow up to book 1; it was so good to catch up with Arilee, Adam, Nat, and Macy from Through Thorny Ways. I enjoyed getting into Davis’ head, as well as Meg’s. Their growth was well-done and realistic. Their faith arcs were so good. And Brax!!! (That’s all I’m going to say on him for now!) The plot twists kept me up past bed time for several nights! The 1920’s is a fascinating time in US history, and it’s been fun to see what life was like in the south then through the perspective of the people in this series. I truly cannot wait to read the next book!
