Shopocalypse Saga #5

BuyMort: Bull Market Mayhem: How I Cornered The Multiversal Monopoly

Rate this book
When the universe decides to default on its existential loans, who better to foreclose the apocalypse than the Windowpuncher, Tyson Dawes?

Dearth Conglommerate is plummeting in market value and Kraken is no more. But not all threats have been extinguished. Thanks to the rising threat of the Sleem, the whole multiverse is in danger. Desperate for a cosmic bailout, the Church calls for a financial crusade. Meanwhile, Molls and her family fall into a whole mess of market shock and face futures unknown.

With Storage under threat of hostile foreclosure, the universe faced with Sleem saturation, and Silken Sands spread thinly over too many areas of opportunity, has BuyMort found its final market victor?

From the elastic supply of the Church’s Inquisition auditing Silken Sands, to a climactic battle with ROI (that's Return on Incineration, by the way) so low it crashes all markets, this is one fiscal year you won't want to miss.

Get ready for a hostile takeover of epic proportions. In " Closing Time," the end isn’t nigh—it’s been leveraged, securitized, and is ready to liquidate. Say your prayers and check your credit score, because when the celestial ledger closes, you'll want to make sure your cosmic assets are diversified.59900 morties, 4.7 stars

BuyMort - GrandOpening

This story features an amalgamation of Amazon, Walmart, every service fee, sales algorithm, membership perk, advertising jingo, Microsoft mascot, and insane discount that you have ever experienced in your life, coupled with the madness of the multiverse, a dash of invisible hand monopolism, feudalism, straight-up cronyism and LOTS of profanity.

This MC is unlike others you may have read before. He starts as a Slacker, Pacifist, Human Pinata type who reluctantly is drawn into saving the people around him and fighting against the machine. There is fantasy violence, base-building, tons of market loot, monsters, a dungeon, affiliate and credit levels, and progression. It is single POV and has no harem elements.

Disappointing installment of the series

I really liked the first few books. This one was just way too broad in scope and had terrible pacing. The author tried to expand the setting to encompass the entire multiverse, but ended up sacrificing the storytelling to do so.

There are huge sections of summarized events where we're given a "this and this happened" retrospective. Why? Just so we can hurry off to the next climactic event, which seemed anticlimactic in turn. All our favorite characters are also largely missing from this book. Rarely are they more than someone on the other end of a MortMobile call, or a quick booty call in the case of Molls.

Probably the last book I read in the series.

I’ve enjoyed all of the BuyMort books thus far, but can’t help but feel like this one was written by BuyMort itself rather than by the main character.

Spoilers ahead —
We spend 3/4 of the book leading into the horrors of genocide for the good of the masses, though a much larger portion is spent on how Tyson’s allowing his girlfriend to get body modifications makes him feel terrible because they permanently alter her appearance (despite her near-constant affirmation that it was her choice and not so bad). Tyson monologues about how much his rise to power has affected his closest friends, and yet we spend less than a chapter discussing how his demands caused one brother to kill another, and send the remaining one into substance abuse immediately prior to killing off an entire species. I feel like we’ve lost the thread here. It seems like the theme of Tyson wanting to maintain his promise to protect the universe, but struggling with the inevitable decisions that come with a Trolley-problem-like scenario affect him only when they impact his sex life (and, really, do they?). I also feel like following six (that I can think of offhand) story arcs at once was a bit ambitious, and either fizzled out without another mention, or came to a crashing conclusion in the last few pages.

I’ll stick with the series only because the previous entires have been so enjoyable, and it’s not like this one wasn’t, there was just so much focus on seemingly empty storylines that the overall premise got muddled. Hoping the next one returns back to original feel.

With the fall of Kraken Silken Sands has risen through the ranks of the multiverse. Darth conglomerate is plummeting, and things seem to FINALLY be going well for Tyson. Yet, appearances may not be what they seem. The Church has named Tyson their hero, giving him the honor of fighting the sleem within Storage and on the newly to-be-inducted BuyMort planet. All that is at risk is the entirety of the Multiverse. The sleem will devour everything if they are allowed to add these newest additions to their collective. Silken Sands is all that stands in the face of this foe. Will they fall or gain more than they ever have before?
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. If you have read any of my other BuyMort reviews, you know by now that I LOVE Tyson and everything to do with the BuyMort books. Even if I didn't get these books from the author, I would be reading them. I am hooked and will not be stopping this series until it is completely finished. Not that I am in a rush for that to happen. I genuinely love these characters.

Tyson continues to mature while still keeping his sense of humor and desire to rid the multiverse of BuyMort completely. His enemies have remained the same, but the threats against him continue to increase. Not only are they becoming more plentiful they are also growing in power. These new sleem are not only numerous but are much more powerful than any of the creatures they have dealt with before. Silken Sands will have to give it all they have if they are to escape with their lives, let alone complete their mission.

We have not lost any of our favorite characters and yes, my absolute favorite, Phyllis, is still alive and well. In fact, she is better than ever. I can't wait to find out what happens with this absolute legacy. We also continue to have Molls, Reyna, and even Tower from the other books. Tower begins to play a larger part in the story while the relationship between one of our favorite couples becomes strained. I truly hope they are able to overcome it in the next book! I won't give away which couple or why. You'll get to figure that out for yourself.

As always, this is my disclaimer that this book cannot be read as a standalone. Don't worry, though. The ENTIRE series is available on Kindle Unlimited. Or, go all in and purchase the books to keep forever. Personally, I am considering getting printed copies to decorate my shelves at home at some point.

Series Info/Source: This is the fifth book in the BuyMort series. I got this on audiobook from Audible.

Thoughts: I listened to this on audiobook and it was fine. The narration is really well done. The story jumps around a lot with us, at times, being immersed in a detailed battle and then getting quick summaries of months of events that happen in rapid succession. It got a bit hard to follow. It also seemed pretty repetitive.

Tyson and crew are taking on the rising threat of the Sleem and are also taking on Dearth once and for all. Meanwhile, Molls and her family end up relocating to New Earth.

I felt like a lot of the character development has fallen to the background here. The story is mostly Tyson being shuttled from battle to battle to expand his hold across the multiverse and combat both Dearth and the Sleem. He does get another suit upgrade, which was intriguing, and I thought the way his increased mental abilities were dealt with was well done. There is just so much going on here it feels scattered and we never get to spend time with any of the characters in a meaningful way.

At this point, I keep reading these because I just want to know how it all ends, and the audiobooks are well done. Unfortunately, these have lost a lot of the humor of the first books and a lot of the wonder as well. The whole world is still intriguing but the story doesn't pull me in like the first 3 books did.

A lot of my favorite characters from the series just make brief cameos, like Dufus and Phyllis. I wish we spent more time with them since they both seem more intriguing than Tyson at this point.

Everyone in here feels world-weary. There isn't that over the top dark humor that the first few books had. Additionally, what is up with Molls? She kind of just stays in the background until Tyson needs comforting or causes trouble with her family. I really don't like what's happened with her character. She's like a stay-at-home warlord girlfriend and nothing more.

At this point, I am on the fence about continuing the series. It's lost a lot of what I enjoyed about it, but I do still want to know if Tyson makes it to his end goal.

My Summary (3/5): Overall this was okay. The pace of the story is all over the place, with lots of time spent on detailed battles and then months pasting quickly which just general summaries of what happened. This has lost a lot of the dark humor that I loved in the first book, and our characters seem stagnant. I miss some of my favorite characters from earlier books. I do still find the world intriguing and I enjoy the latest suit upgrade that Tyson got. However, I am uncertain as to whether or not I will finish the last two books in the series at this time.

Our little Warlord is all grown up and conquering the universe…

I’ve loved reading the Buymort books from the beginning. This one entails not only the next major campaign of the Warlord of Nu-Earth, but some surprising growth of the man Tyson Dawes himself. It happens in a serious, introspective way without making it to fluffy for the violent riptide of Bull Market Mayhem. Definitely still delivers all the thrilling, edge of your seat, smashing action we expect and love from Team Silken Sands! I ate the story up like a sleem eats, well, anything! Fast, and smooth and even at almost 800 pages, over way to soon. Looking forward to the next round!

Walmart mates with Amazon in Space!

Imagine a Future Where Walmart Mated with Amazon through an Apple/Google Union? That is sorta something like BuyMort and only a thirty something year old former slacker turned supreme Warlord of the multiverse whose only known talent is an ability to perform acts of ultra saturated violence against his enemies … Actually this series is probably one of the best, funniest reads I’ve enjoyed since happily stumbling upon the LitRPG Genre … Can’t wait for the secret war with the almighty Church of Buy Mort! Go Tyson Dawes!

While the book, and thus series so far, is still good, this installment seems to be made just for sales, and not for the story.
The story seems to be a afterthought in my opinion, though if there was a little extra editing and fleshing out it would have been as great as the others.
The whole book talks about having to eliminate a species for all others to survive, yet the whole battle was started, fought, and finished in just a few pages. Almost as if forgotten to be included so just tacked on at the end.
And yes, I will be reading the next in the series when and if it comes out.

Wow, that escalated fast. There is *a lot* packed in this book. However I took off a star for how much was included there could be much more added for depth of characters and story. After some significant changes to Tyson I think the reader will go back to the axiom of absolute power corrupts absolutely. So far New Earth is on a path of independence and the hopeful freedom of Buymort but there are heavy costs being paid. This story gets a bit darker by the end of it so it might be a rough continuation from here on out.

Wavered a bit on the rating for this since the last bit of the book seemed rushed, but overall it rates the 5 I gave it. Pacing I think is a bit of an issue, but the story remains interesting so I can forgive that.

MC flirts with being OP, but considering the scale he's up against he wouldn't survive if he were any weaker. Things have seriously escalated by the end of this one, so it'll be interesting to see where this goes from here.

I love this series.
Book 5 sets a much broader tone than the earlier ones due to the scope. It moves faster as well. While the first 3 novels covered a week combined and the 4th covered a month, this one covers many months of growth for the Warlord of Arizona/Nu-Earth. Still it's a great story, with great characters and I cannot wait to see how this ends.

The second-best lovely garbage that knows what it is.

I’m old, and I used to watch a show called “Hardcastle and McCormick”, but only if Magnum, PI wasn’t on. This is the Hardcastle & McCormick to DCC’s Magnum, PI. And that’s a great place to be, because even as a chile in the late 90’s I had dozens of choices, and being 2/48 is better than I’ve done in any career ever.

Popcorn book (audiobook version), and that’s fine.

An interesting concept not full realized, but still it was an okay book. The speed at which the books move is a bit inconsistent, and lends itself to make for interesting characters to fall by the waist side, which is a pity because the beginning ‘villain’ I really liked.

A great continuation of the series. But things are starting to get dark, the Windowpuncher is changing, and his people are getting more grim and hardend even as they get more powerful. I sense tragedy coming in the next book.

Wow an incredible ride

This series flows particularly well, pacing is never an issue. My only complaint is the massively OPMC. Despite some very clever introspective dialogue the reader has very little insight into why the protagonist is...

Fun

Tyson continues his quest to conquer Buymort and destroy it. He grows his company. He expands his power. He kills the Beholder. He kills the sleeme and takes down Darth.

Still entertaining and well paced. Great narrator and a joy to listen to. Please enjoy

This scaled up so hard, and I'm here for it. First time I was ever reading a book/LitRPG, and felt like I was reading an incremental game/RPG (one of my favorite gaming genres, both idle and active)...

We're approaching the finale now, and things Are HAPPENING... can't wait to continue...

This one did nothing for me. Like many LitRpgs as the worlds build the purview becomes so vast the the story and vibe feel disjointed and hollow. This is that type of tale.

I’m kind of getting over this series. It needs more entertainment and some more humour. I still want to finish it though
