From the bestselling author of The Jam Factory Girls, comes the second heartfelt installment in Mary Wood's The Guernsey Girls trilogy.
War separates them, but it cannot dampen their spirits . . .
Spring, 1940. Annie’s new husband Ricky leaves to fight, but she soon discovers battles brewing closer to home. As her sister Janey begins to unravel, only Annie can pick up the pieces – and, with London’s police officers on the front line, she must also step up at work and do her bit for the country.
In Guernsey, Olivia finds herself without her husband and son just as Hitler's forces invade the island. Trapped and heartbroken, she faces untold horrors as the Germans tighten their hold on the islanders.
How will Annie manage her responsibilities to her family and her country in the thick of the Blitz, while suffering the heartache of not knowing what is happening to her beloved Ricky? And can Olivia survive in Guernsey at the hands of the enemy?
This is no. 2 in the series and picks up with Olivia and Annie in the early days of WW2. Olivia’s husband is an anglicised German national, who has returned to Germany (unwillingly, it has to be said) to support Hitler, but he is acting as a double agent and fees back information during his phone calls to his wife, who has remained with their young son on Guernsey.
Annie, who once worked for Olivia’s family, is based in London where she, too, is helping with the war effort. The two women’s friendship remains firm in the face of the escalating war.
The Germans arrive on the island, the Blitz is under way. There is heartbreak, poignancy and drama to keep the reader involved.
The Guernsey Girls find Peace is the third story in the trilogy coming out later 2024. This can be read as a standalone but reading The Guernsey Girls first might offer a richer experience.
Oh my what a blinder of a book ,Olivia is going through hell without her son Karl and Hendrick but it all goes wrong when they find a transmitter .then over in Britain the bombing has started in London and for Annie it's heartbreaking trying to keep her family safe poor Janey is suffering at Jimmy's hands but they all find the strength they need to go on what a book 5 Stars
I would give this book and the previous one 6 stars! Very well written and unputdownable. The stories are fantastic and I am looking forward to reading book number 3 to find out what happens to Annie and Olivia.
I found the book a bit difficult to follow as the chapters were divided into different characters and I like to follow through with all characters in each chapter. Just not my style otherwise good storylines!
This was a great follow-up to the first in the series, Olivia and Annie are brave girls who tackle things head-on. I know it's not real but I shed a few tears. Looking forward to reading book 3.
Enjoyed this novel a lot. I loved all the characters who were close to the girls and really enjoyed the fictional WW2 story of Guernsey during this period.
