Lis Wiehl loves to tackle HARD topics, and I appreciate that!
This one follows a prosecutor with the heavy decision on whether or not to prosecute 14 year old murders as adult or adolescents….
Meanwhile, her house has been invaded, with her two young children inside, and her husband’s death is now being reconsidered as suspicious….
Not sure I necessarily consider this Christian fiction 🤷🏼♀️
Language: 3 abuses of god, 1 hell as a swear
A mention of church only came up, like 75% in.

A Deadly Business is the second novel written by Lis Wiehl featuring Mia Quinn. She is a prosecutor for Seattle's Violent Crimes Unit. The story continues her life after the possible suicide of her husband who left her with two children and massive debts. Mia constantly finds herself balancing life as a full-time prosecutor and mother but often feels that she is drowning under the weight of it all.
Mia's latest case involves three teens who perform a vicious act of reckless disregard towards a woman who couldn't have been less deserving. She consistently goes back and forth with the decision to charge them as adults or not. Meanwhile, after the insistence of Charlie, a detective she may or not have feelings for, she discovers her husband may have in fact been murdered.
The most interesting part of this followup to A Matter of Trust for me is the unveiling of Mia's husbands' mysterious death. Although some of the revelations are obvious, Wiehl had me eating out of the palm of her hand as the pieces of his life were falling into place.
Once again, Lis Wiehl writes a rapidly moving, suspense thriller that just piles on the "whoa" moments. A lot was packed into this short novel. I imagine most reading this novel will wonder how they got to the end so fast. Never once did Wiehl allow me to come up for air.
A Deadly Business, as mentioned before, is a great followup to A Matter of Trust and proves to fans that this series is worth investing in. After reading my third novel by this author, I think it's safe to say I'm a fan. Her books just keep getting better.

Mia Quinn, a prosecutor in Seattle's King County Violent Crimes Unit, deciding if three fifteen year old boys, whose reckless actions horrifically and severely injured a young woman, should be tried as juveniles or adults. Also Mia, a recent widow, left with two children has discovered a few secrets her husband harbored as well as clues leading to the fact his demise may not have been an accident but rather murder.
Full of suspense, mystery and a little romance as well as civil issues prompting the reader to ask themselves poignant questions. The pace is quick keeping your full attention. The characters felt wooden, the narrative offers a mixed bag of genres with a sense of it being a tad jumbled. The transitions seemed rough and a clear tense feeling between all the players interaction was awkward at best.
A good read with a few flaws, nonetheless entertaining. The fast pace allows the reader to rip through and allow forgiveness for hiccups. Provoking, plenty of legal aspects to educate without being boring. definitely NOT a time waster.

It’s been some time since I read the first book of this series; so it was pretty much read as a stand-alone. Mia came alive for me as she deals with her life as a widowed mother. It is an interesting plot, but there is something I found annoying. It’s that periodically there is a brief portrayal of the sinister character who is responsible for the threats to Mia’s life. Then at the climax it’s revealed who it is. Maybe a small thing, but it bothered me.

When the powers that be refuse to reopen the case, it's up to Mia and Charlie to investigate, all the while trying to deny a growing attraction between them. Was her accountant husband really in league with nefarious criminals? And who is the young woman whose photo they find on his computer?
Uncovering the truth may hurt Mia in more ways than one.

This is the second Mia Quinn book I have read - the previous one was Book 3 and, sadly, this one wasn't AS good. It certainly wasn't bad, but seemed to lack a little of the substance the third book had. Maybe that was experience, maybe it was the growth of the characters. Whatever it was, the third book was definitely better!
While the plot, pacing and narrative were well done, I found that the characters were a little "wooden" - maybe "cardboard cut-out" would be a better description. Even Mia, who I thought was a real stand out in the third book, seemed to lack the same punch and impact that she had in the next book.
Still, worth a read for those courtroom-procedural fans.

A DEADLY BUSINESS (Mia Quinn Mystery Series #2) by Lis Wiehl continues the suspense, after A MATTER OF TRUST (Mia Quinn Mystery #1) with Mia, a prosecutor in Seattle’s King County Violent Crimes Unit, while juggling the demands of single parenthood.
Mia and her children, 14 yr-old Gabe and 3 yr-old Brooke, are still adjusting to the loss of her husband, Scott, an accountant who died in a car accident seven months ago. However, Detective Charlie Carlson wants to re-open the case, as he has reason to believe Scott’s death was not an accident.
A compelling crime mystery---as the book opens, there is much drama, as a 22 yr-old convict walks into the courtroom, and knocks Mia to the ground, holding a razor blade to her throat (he blames her for his conviction).
Her next order of business is to decide if three, 15 yr old boys, whose actions in a shopping cart case, resulted in severe injuries to a young mother-- should be charged as adults or juveniles. (all in a day’s work).
As Mia becomes personally involved with this mother, and the case she faces, she is also dealing with the secrets of her husband, Scott. Did she even know this man?
She and Charlie begin an investigation of their own. Piece by piece she is faced with his betrayal which involves the IRS, another woman, his clients, unethical accounting practices, jewelry store, and more colorful characters.
As the truth becomes more shocking and the case grows more complex, her husband's killers are focused on Mia and her children. How far will this prosecutor go to learn the truth about her husband—and how far will she have to go to protect her family?
I enjoyed reading the inspiration behind this story---the 2011 incident of two teens who threw a shopping cart from a walkway at a NYC shopping center, where a woman was shopping with her teen son (crushed by the cart dropped from four stories). When all was said and done, after weeks fighting for her life, the mother of two lost the use of her left eye and would require daily physical therapy. One of the most miraculous things about this story was that Marion found a way to forgive the two boys who changed her life with a senseless crime. In this case the two boys who dropped the shopping cart were charged as juveniles. This meant that the goal in sentencing was less about punishment and more about rehabilitating the two boys so that they could rejoin their community, make better decisions, and be more mindful of their actions.
DEADLY BUSINESS, was a suspense thriller with well-developed characters. I look forward to reading the first book in the series to learn more about Mia-- She was a likable yet flawed character, who balances her work and family with humor and love, while juggling numerous obstacles and challenges.
Her high profile career as a public prosecutor does not come easy, as is extremely demanding. The justice system is the arena for Mia’s work, yet she is often asking what justice is supposed to look, as she has to review punishment for wrongdoing, rehabilitation for criminals, and preventing future crimes.
Also included at the end, an excerpt from SNAPSHOT, set in Fort Worth, Texas -- What if a single photograph, unearthed after fifty years, is the key to solving a murder? Inspired by actual historical events, and featuring a personal photo and research by Lis Wiehl's retired FBI agent father, SNAPSHOT is set to be her most poignant work to date. Sounds like a winner!
This was my first book by Lis Wiehl, and look forward to reading more from this talented author! An ideal book for book clubs and discussions.

This is the second book in the Mia Quinn Mysteries. I enjoyed it very much. We learn more about how Mia's husband died and what he was up to before he died.
Charlie Carlson suggests to Mia that her husbands death was not an accident. Trying to balance her job and her home Mia now must also help Charlie investigate her husbands murder.
Mia is also feeling pressure from her boss who is running for re-election. When 3 teens dump a grocery cart off a bridge onto a woman's head Mia must decide whether they should be tried as juveniles or as adults. Her decision could ultimately lose the race for her boss.
Mia is under so much pressure with all of the situations going on that I found myself wondering how she didn't just break down.
The pace of the book moved along quickly. I was invested in the characters. I did find myself a little irritated at Mia's son Gabe. He has a bit of a rant at one point and I wanted to reach through the pages and shake him, but then had to realize that he too is going through a lot of stuff since his father died. I loved the suspense leading up to the conclusion of the book, I was definitely on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens. There is a bit of attraction going on between Charlie and Mia and another lawyer and Mia. I'm hoping that those will develop in future books. My vote is for Charlie even though he has been married 3 times before!

He has a bit of a rant at one point and I wanted to reach through the pages and shake him, but then had to realize that he too is going through a lot of stuff since his father died. I loved the suspense leading up to the conclusion of the book, I was definitely on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens. There is a bit of attraction going on between Charlie and Mia and another lawyer and Mia. I'm hoping that those will develop in future books. My vote is for Charlie even though he has been married 3 times before!

This series is pretty good-- good enough that I plan to finish it if my library will get the third book-- but definitely not as good as some I've read.
Also, I don't know that I would actually classify these books as Christian Fiction (which is what I was told they were). Clean? Yes. Though, perhaps, not entirely as I do recall hearing (it was an audiobook) at least one curse word and a scene or two that may make some more sensitive readers... uncomfortable.
One last thing: if I was adding the narrator into the equation, I would have only rated this 2 stars. I really didn't care for the narrator at all so I would recommend skipping the audio version and just reading the actual book.

This was my first Lis Wiehl book and it won't be my last. I really thoroughly enjoyed this book.
A woman loses her husband in an automobile accident. Seven months later her partner is telling her that it may not have been an accident. It could be murder.
The investigation that finally takes place into this "accident" becomes both heartbreaking and life threatening. Lots of twists and turns keep you guessing through out the story.
I will definitely be reading more of Lis Wiehl's books!!!

I have read all three Mia Quinn books, although out of order! This didn't seem to get in the way of enjoying them.
In this book, Charlie and Mia are investigating a. Rime committed by three juveniles. Mia has to decide whether to prosecute them as adults. They pushed a shopping cart off a parapet and it hit, and seriously injured, a young woman.
Also, Charlie has discovered that Mia's husband, Scott, may not have died as the result of car accident; he may have been murdered.
While Mia doesn't want to face the possibility of Scott's murder, she is increasingly anger at the facts that arise from Charlie's interest in this case. Scott appears to have been having an affair whilst simultaneously getting deeper in debt; a debt Mia is still paying off!
Scott's accounting practices are suspicious as are his clients. As Mia and Charlie get closer to the truth, they also come to the attention of those people who wanted Scott out of the way.
I liked the story line, the dilemma Mia faced not only in her work life, but also privately: what is the best course of action?
One question that was never really revisited, was how Mia and her family resolved the issue of Gabe's friend and his mother living with them. Or did I miss that?

He has left her with two children, many questions and a huge amount of financial debt. A detective named Charlie Carlson, with whom Mia works, has decided to look again into the investigation surrounding her husband’s death. What he finds makes the death look more like a homicide than a suicide.

The second book in the Mia Quinn series was a little bit of a downgrade from the first book, however I still enjoyed it. There was really no mystery to the book and there was no urgency for the reader to figure out who the killer is because he is revealed to us early on. Despite this though, this book still had a few unexpected twists and surprises that I was quite fond of.
Some topics that are discussed through out the book include discovering a spouse is not who we once believed, helping those in need despite being uncomfortable at times, and the importance of not making children grow up too fast.
I also enjoyed the addition of Mia handling another case and the circumstances of that case. First, who knew the damaging effects of a shopping cart?! Second, we get a glimpse of one of the many justice system dilemmas- how to charge juvenile offenders.
Finally, as usual with most books, the hint of romance is included in this Mia Quinn novel and I find myself secretly hoping that one interest will win versus the other, but also can't help to think that perhaps Mia should allow herself some time to heal more thoroughly.
Overall, good read! On to the next!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Once again I did not realize it was part of a series and just dived right in. Listening to the audiobook throughout the day I found the mystery intriguing and actually enjoyed the plotline concerning Mia's personal life.
While I understood the main plotline enough without having read the first book, I could definitely tell that there were other pieces of information I was missing. It was more so inconvenient than hindering, but you can read this book if you've no interest in the first.
Overall, this is a good weekend read if you have time, I might read the other two but there's no urgency to do so.

It was good. I didn’t have book but wanted to keep up with trilogy. It continued with Mia n Charlie working together on cases still there were some juveniles who committed a crime by pushing a buggy off bridge that hits a woman and her son just shopping. Anyhow they’re deciding if they should try boys as juveniles or adults then Charlie has discovered he thinks that Mia’s husbands accident was actually a murder so they’re working on both. It’s good and I flew through it without many breaks. Would recommend

Another likable effort by Lis Wiehl in the Mia Quinn Series. This is book #2. Easy to read and was easy to pick up and follow.
The book touches on the aftermath of her husbands death and the life that Mia now has to lead. Left with two children, one young preschool-ish aged girl and a teen boy, balancing this with a professional life in which she is a prosecutor and teacher at UW in Seattle.

I loved this book very much. The inner thoughts and turmoil experienced by the main characters was compelling for me. I could identify easily with the frustrations, doubts, and second thoughts. The logic and decision making dialogs were really interesting. The courtroom scenes were fascinating. The author is very talented. I am eager to read more books by her.

I must admit that I picked up this second book in the series because it promised to fill in some of the back story that was just hinted at in the first book.
It is interesting - the author seems to know Seattle well enough to drop some recognizable details, but it still doesn't breath 'Seattle'.

While the mystery is solved early in the book, there is still intrigue throughout the pages. There is background information on Mia Quinn's husband and the car accident that caused his death. The characters are well developed and you find yourself cheering for some and despising others. I have enjoyed the books in this series.

Interesting new female character
I found this series awhile ago but just decided to try it. Mia Quinn is an interesting woman balancing various aspects of her personal and professional life. The plots weave several storylines together, making me turn the page to learn what might happen next. Fun escape! Highly recommend! I’ve always enjoyed Lis Wiehl’s writing.

This was much better than I expected. I wasn’t expecting her writing to be as good as her news reporting but she proved me wrong. I enjoyed the characters and story development although I am unsure about the romantic spark which was hard to define. Maybe it is flushed out in her next book..

Hmmm, can I just say “dadgum, what a book!” Seriously, “dadgum” is what the main character utters to herself as she’s being kidnapped and riding in a car with a gun in her neck. Honestly.
This is an overly simplistic and trite mystery that is completely predictable. Why did I read it? That’s the question. Here’s another…how in the world could anyone give this 5 stars?

Sorry to say I did not finish this book. Too slow. I read A Matter of Trust & liked it but this one just drug on. I probably will not read another one of her books. I like page turner books but have not had much success the last 3 books I chose.

Back into the world of Mia. This girl has it hard. Dead husband, tons of bills, single mom, people trying to kill her. Plus not realizing two guys like her? Then this book twists the reason her husband died? On to the next book.

Really Good Read!!! Ending not as abrupt on this one. Still some straggling ends though, for instance the Chinese restaurant. Love Love the characters!!! Story jamned with mystery & suspence, very well written!!!

Good but...
