I always like the blueprints and the builds they work on. The imagination of this series is great, and for a monster filled manga, so soothing. I especially like the cat-siths.

I love this series. It's so fun, and the fantasy architecture cutaway illustrations are great. Apparently it gets darker from here, so we'll see what that's like.

Are you kidding me?! Now cats and a sweet, giant golem?! I really want to give this 5 stars like all the others, because I really love it THAT much, but I don't love the sneaky attempts at fan service. It may be subtle, but I SEE YOU, and it frustrates me that a series as sweet and strong as this feels the need to go there at all.

Finding the right words to recommend this manga is not easy. I stumble over the elation I have when discussing the ins and outs of what makes this story so, damn, good. IF anyone has ever played "Tiny Bookshop" on Steam? This is a similar level of energy. It's a warm cup of tea on the right night. A comforting blanket during a storm.

Soara, Gansho, Kirik and Niko are the perfect little sQuad of adventurers with the most heartfelt goal in mind. I never knew I needed an architectural story / manga, but here we are. The author / Mangaka seems like such a sweetheart- giving his sketchings and thoughts after the story each volume has concluded. A little dash of excitement towards "See you next volume!" makes the story feel so personal and 1:1.

Speaking of story.. Volume 3 is by far my favorite of the bunch so far. The Korpokkur are the cutest little wood wizards EVER, and the "Get!!" moment at the end is the neatest little trinket and I wish I F**king had one. Goh, by the way, is totally a "If anything happens to him, I will kill everyone in this room and then myself" character addition, haha. I am all for how slow baked this story is moving, and look forward to being with this story for a long, long time if the volumes keep releasing.

That said.. much like the ending to volume 2? Holy shit. The last 2 pages of Vol. 3 not only have me a pinch worried, but the author stating that change is coming? I didn't know I could be more excited about this series, but here we are!

As Soara and the remodeling crew continue their quest to find Kirik's master, they help remodel an over-crowded and fire-prone restaurant for a group of sith-cats, then they help some korpokkur upgrade their home and incorporate the golem they raised. But right after that happy ending they run into a not-so-friendly creature out to stop them in their quest.

I liked the 2 remodeling projects in this and how Soara and the dwarves help others who are helping others. They are great pay it forward stories. The confrontation with an unfriendly monster is not resolved and will have you eager for the next volume.

Notes on content:
Language: About 12 minor swears if I remember right.
Sexual content: No sexual content per se. One female character is drawn a bit bustily on one page.
Violence: The restaurant is so crowded fights are breaking out among the customers (no one is seriously hurt it seems), but the restaurant is burned down partially. The last battle with the bad guy is no concluded so it isn't clear if people are ok or not.
Ethnic diversity: Soara appears to be Asian. The other characters are all animal or fantasy creatures.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: An adoptee gets too large for the home that welcomed him in and has to be sent away. The remodelers help reunited the found family.

Volume 3 includes the cait sith (cute monster cats) which makes this 5 stars by default. Soara the dwarf crew find themselves building for the cait sith in an adorable and heart-warming arc.

This volume is a great continuation of the series, as we see Soara develop more and more as she experiences things she's never been able to before - like good food. Like always, the dwarf crew builds cool and interesting structures that are made with the monsters' needs and capabilities in mind.

We also see glimpses into how the past war between humans and monsters shape the present time. This series has its contemplative moments even as it usually stays on an upbeat, comedic note.

Overall, I'm excited for the next volume and to see where this series goes!

This manga series is a true hidden gem.

Absolutely brilliant world building. Genius home designs that complement individual monsters in exactly the right ways. Gorgeous art. Fantastic character design. Cute moments.

Every before and after view of a house is like a page right out of an "I Spy" book. There's so much to see! The author is so imaginative!!

5 stars! I want to see more and more of this story!

I actually liked the little stories and houses a lot more in this volume, and the brief moment of character development was really nice, but the fanservice really went up a notch in this one. Just so disappointing! It's so unrelated to the story and I think the worst part is that it isn't even that bad, but it's subtle enough that it feels so omnipresent and I hate it. I hate it so much. It's making it really hard to get into this concept.

This is a really fun fantasy manga with some excellent, detailed illustrations. It follows the continuing adventures of Soara and a team of dwarves who build houses for monsters. The highlight of this volume is a group of sentient, two-legged cats they encounter; the depiction of the cats is truly adorable.

THE CUTEST MONSTERS live in this volume. I love them and I want a cat-sith and korpokkur community in my neighborhood.

Soara and the dwarves improve a cat café and help a golem reunite with its family.

These books are cute but a bit too episodic for me. I think I'm ok not continuing in the series.

Volume 3 of “Soara and the House of Monsters” was funny and heartwarming, and was just as good as the previous volumes. I can’t wait to read the next one when it releases later this month!

Kirik helps the Cat-Siths open up a restaurant for monsters where they won't fight each other. Soara finds newfound meaning to life after spending more time with her new dwarf friends.

Kind of slowed down a bit but definitely understandable as to why. Seems like the story is about to delve deeper.

4.5 rounded up. The creativity is still on full showcase and the heart only increases in this volume between the quartet. The first two thirds are devoted to the Cat-Sith and renovating their restaurant. It is very wholesome, adorable and charming to read. The ending is satisfying too as there is a bit of a focus here on Soara wanting to better know her dwarf companions more showing how her connection with them (and in turn monsters as a whole) has developed over the story so far.
The finale is devoted to a super cute story between some Korpokkur and their golem friend Goh as the Dwarves and Soara help them reconnect which pushes the limit of a house to a limit very creatively and in a very fun manner. It again has Soara reviewing her worldview. The ending did pick up with the weird goop monster and the teaser mentioned next volume might get darker so I'm interested in how that will go down though I have trust in Yamaji as this series has been pure gold until now.

Soara and the House of Monsters Review

5/5 stars

I picked up this manga on a whim because I saw it at the library and it looked cute. There are currently two volumes out, with a third on the way. There will be no spoilers. Granted, that will make this quite short, but hopefully you get enough to determine if you’d want to start this series. Enjoy!

This is a relatively new manga about a girl named Soara who spent her whole life training to fight monsters, only to find out that the monsters have just signed a truce with the humans and they will no longer be at war.

While trying to figure out what to do with her life, Soara ends up running into these dwarves who are architects who build houses for monsters. She doesn’t trust them at first, because she’s not sure that the peace treaty will last very long.

But after seeing them create such beautiful houses that are perfectly suited to the monsters who will inhabit them, Soara eventually agrees to help them. She’s sort of the hired muscle for their group, but might eventually learn about architecture as the series continues.

In the first few volumes, they build a couple of houses for different monster species, and work through some of the difficulties they have getting to know each other. The architecture is really where this series shines. Every house is designed specifically for each monster, and the creative ideas are so fun to read about. It kind of feels like dream architecture, but it’s actually drawn out and tangible!

And then everything changes when they receive a mysterious letter from the king of the monsters, asking them to come back to his castle for some unknown reason. I won’t tell you why, as that’s spoilers, but what I will say is this adds a whole new layer to the world building and plot I was not expecting from a kind of cute, goofy series about magical architecture.

I honestly had a lot of fun with these two volumes, and I can’t wait for volume three when it comes out later this year. I’m always on the hunt for fantasy or sci-fi manga that aren’t just your typical shonen, because those start to all feel the same after a while. I’ve never read anything like this in manga or book format, and I’m super glad I found this series. I cannot recommend it enough!

Have a nice day/night everyone!

Both the houses in this volume are again, really innovative! I also liked the possible set-up that Kirik may be surpassing Kahyo? Not quite sure, but the Korpukkur solution seemed to imply that. It seems the quest will be darker from now on, but I hope it still includes cool houses, I'm interested to see where it goes!
