He’s an international spy. She accidentally becomes his asset.
Every Tuesday, my best friend and I get together to watch spy movies, and I dream of a secret agent sweeping me off my feet.
Imagine my surprise when a) one actually does, b) I don’t realize he’s a spy (even though “secret” is in the job title, so I should’ve seen that coming), and c) his mission is to protect me.
For the I don’t need protecting. But if I did, Jace would be my top pick. I have more fun and feel more connected during the 10 minutes when he’s rescuing me from a blind date than I’ve had in the past several years of dating combined. Add a helicopter, a black-tie gala, and a motorcycle chase, and even though I’m reluctant to date anyone, I’m ready to let him protect me anytime.
Yet, my (considerable) reluctance to date is nothing compared to Jace’s. He has a rule not to date anyone until he is no longer a covert intelligence operative. Something about it being a bad idea to mix love and espionage.
But am I falling anyway? Yeah, I might be falling.
Send help.
“Spies Don’t Fall for Their Asset” is a closed-door romantic comedy brimming with chemistry, sizzling tension, and witty banter. In a world where the family business is the spy business, prepare to laugh out loud, swoon, and fall head over heels in love.
Meg Easton is the USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romances and romantic comedies with fun, memorable, swoon-worthy characters, and settings you’ll want to pack up and move to. She lives at the foot of a mountain with her name on it (or at least one letter of her name) in Utah. She loves gardening, bike riding, baking, swimming before the sun rises, and spending time with her husband and three kids.
Spies Don’t Fall for Their Assets was a fun, easy and lighthearted read, but I wanted more spy action and less romance. The plot had so much potential, and I really enjoyed the concept, but there were moments where I was cringing hard. It leaned pretty heavily into the cheesy side, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if that’s what you’re in the mood for, but I found myself wishing for a bit more depth and tension. That said, it’s an entertaining read that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Thank you NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for the arc🫶🏼
*Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio-arc in exchange for an honest review!*
Second read (audiobook): 3.75 Stars. First read: 3 Stars.
I’ve always enjoyed a good rom-com spy novel, and I had a fantastic time reading this book last summer. So, when I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of a story I had thoroughly enjoyed, it felt like a dream come true. From start to finish, I was once again completely captivated.
I’m eagerly looking forward to reading the next book in the Romancing the Spy series in the near future.
'"Good luck, have fun, don't die!" Three things that are always part of my plan.'
WHERE HAS THIS BOOK BEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?? SO GOOD!!
This book is SO MUCH FUN!! And yes, I'm bringing out the caps locks for this one!
This book is worth every word in caps and if I could insert a million emojis into my computer it would be worth all of those too.
'The way to be an effective field operative is to always be in control of the situation and to never let external factors dictate how the mission is going to go.'
Is there any sense of control when romance is involved?
I don't think so...and that is what makes this book SO GOOD!
There isn't anything NOT worth loving in this book. It's serious gold. I was entertained to the highest levels from page one to the end. I loved the spy elements, I loved the romance, I loved every single characters, I loved every scene-this book is a total vibe and it's something everyone needs in their life!
Get this book, read it and love it! It's a top 2023 favorite for me!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
***************Audiobook Update*************** I listened to the audiobook of this one and loved the narrators! They did a fabulous job and pulled me right back into this story. I loved it just as much as when I read the book. I felt I was there with MacKenzie and Jace in their adventures. Especially when Mackenzie wasn't sure what was happening. So fun diving back into this story! I'm hoping that these two narrators will be narrating more books for this author! Thank you Dreamscape Media, via NetGalley, for the audiobook!!! ********************************************
I have been anticipating this book since the author started sharing little teasers about a big project that was different from what her normal projects are! I kept waiting for the announcement and big reveal and when she finally did, I squealed! Yes, I'm a grown woman and I squealed!!! Because I love this author's books, she's just wonderful and very talented. And I love me some spy and suspense and comedy all wrapped in one and I knew she was going to nail it! And let me tell you, she did!!!
I didn't want it to end. I was hooked from page one and completely immersed in MacKenzie's world. She's fun and lovable and down to earth and funny and sweet! The first time Jace sees her, he can't help but be pulled in by her wit and cleverness. That first meeting was so much fun! I giggled and cheered Jace on in his ruse. And MacKenzie played right along and made it even more perfect! From there it just kept rolling and the adventure just kept coming! Which of course made MacKenzie very happy and made Jace a little distracted. Hahaha! But he was so good at staying in character but also being himself. Those reflexes were amazing...at least MacKenzie really thought so. ;-)
So many fun scenes throughout this book. The purse. The picnic. Walking the dog. The spy movies. The dancing. The dress. The club. The helicopter. The asset. The Lancaster family. The mansion. The motorcycle. The sweet love story! The suspense! The thrill of it all!!! Worth every minute spent reading this one! I promise you won't be disappointed. Especially if you're a fan of Meg Easton's books and you're thinking that this one is different than all of her other books. Throw those worries aside and pick it up! This is true Meg Easton style with a really fun twist! One of my favorite books by her! I'm looking forward to more books in this series!
You'll laugh and cheer and swoon and sigh! Snuggle in for a wild ride and the sweetest love adventure!
Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril and aspects of a spy novel; chases, disguises, fights, etc. Some kisses but nothing further. Very well written!
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Thank you Net galley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook. 3.5 stars, i enjoyed listening to this audiobook as the female narrator was super fun and so expressive. Especially when she starts to ramble, it felt so natural, and it helped Mackenzie's character developed a lot. I could understand why Jace fell for her. She was literal sunshine. Jace, on the other hand, trained to be secret operative, keeps his cool even on the time he might be falling hard for her. I love this type of dynamic and that was perfectly shown in this book. I loved the whole Lancaster family and want each single sibling to have their own book. PLS MEG. Waiting excitedly for Dreamscape Media to drop "Spies don't fall for their Rivals" on Net galley, cause i will be defo first in line for that.
“Nations rise and fall because of kisses like that. I’m an addict. Like a raccoon who has discovered where the camper’s stash of Oreos is. I’ve never related to a raccoon more.”
Mackenzie is obsessed with all things spy related and finds herself unknowingly and unwittingly smack in the middle of an impossibly clever situation. Her naive and bumbling ways had me laughing over and over, especially as she faces circumstances that even she can’t believe are real. Jace is extremely capable and confident in his role as a spy and despite his every attempt, finds himself in deep trouble trying to protect this magnificent woman.
I adored the spy theme, as well as all the humor infused into these characters' predicaments. This author does such a great job of incorporating all the elements I love into a fun, adventurous and romantic tale. The movie references are the cherry on top of an adorable chemistry-filled story, with characters worth cheering for. I can’t wait for more of this series!
Content: mild romance; mild moments of peril/danger
From the first chapter I could tell I was going to enjoy this one. I loved how humorous and lighthearted it was without being overly fluffy/meaningless. I really liked the concert scene. I loved how the action scenes and RomCom-y parts were spaced out nicely along with family content, work, and friendship elements. I look forward to Seeing the other members of the CSA get their HEAs in their books. I really liked the epilogue and the meet cute
TL;DR I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
The characters ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Makenzie ~ She was great!
Jace ~ He loves Mackenzie so much. He was great.
Livi ~ She was a really good friend and I liked her.
Charlie ~ She was interesting I'm excited for her story.

Buddy read with my amazing (and patient) friend Jaida!!!
This was such a fun book! I loved the concept of this romcom with the MMC being an undercover spy who has to protect the FMC by dating her!?! That is so cute!! 😍 the plot of this book was really good and interesting the entire time! Although towards the end I thought that the bad guys would come back to threaten them but even though they alluded to it, it didn’t end up happening. I loved how sweet McKenzie was with her niece and her family and how outgoing she is and I also really liked how protective Jace was and wanting so badly to keep her safe🥰! The only reason why it is not a four star is because there were some alluding to some semi-inappropriate things, like Jace saying that if he and McKenzie got married they would either get ready to work on time (or something like that but I forgot) or have an adventurous night under the covers before he reprimands himself by getting distracted by the idea🤦🏼♀️. I really enjoyed this book over all and it definitely made me laugh a few times and will probably continue this series! I can’t wait to see what his brother’s romances will be!! 😆
This was my first book I've read from Meg Easton and I know that this will definitely not be my last! I loved this book so much and finished it in just a couple of days. It was one where I was invested from the beginning and couldn't wait to see how it was going to end.
I love the characters that Meg has created from the main characters Jace and Mackenzie to the secondary characters they were all just perfection!
I love that Jace is the ultimate swoony spy who is a fierce protector. I love that he falls fast and at the same time doesn't see it coming at all. He is so sweet with Mackenzie and I love that we also get to meet his amazing family who will be getting books of their own soon!
Mackenzie is just sunshine and joy and I love that she is learning to step outside of her comfort zone and live life to the fullest. I absolutely loved the banter between Mackenzie and Jace and how nothing ever felt forced between them. Their love story and relationship just felt right and I loved every interaction between them.
I also loved that, yes this book has some romantic suspense, but not enough angst for me to go chewing off all my fingernails. It was definitely more focused on such a sweet love story but then with some action and adventure thrown in. To me it was the perfect blend of everything from moments that made me laugh, to heart touching moments that made me cry, to moments that just made my heart warm. This book was just what I needed to read!
If you are looking for a great romance with action, heart, laughs and so many perfect romantic quotes from Jace give this one a go! I loved every single second and already counting down to book 2!

This story was so much fun. It kept me interested and invested all the way through. I loved the characters, Jace the spy, the dancing, the note and honey, the fancy shoes, the wall in the rain. Ugh, I loved too much to list here. The story just had a positive, upbeat feel to it. I loved it all. I'm ready for book two in this series!
What a fun story! I love a good spy storyline and this one did not disappoint. I loved the sweet romance and the action throughout. I can't wait to read the next book!
This is a fun new book/series by Meg Easton. I always love reading her books because the characters are likeable, they're not overly dramatic, the storylines are very sweet, and her writing style is easy to read. I had a good time reading about spy movie-loving MacKenzie falling in love with covert operative Jace. There are some funny and clever moments, a little bit of spy action, and a big, loving family. The spy genre is a new direction for this author, and I thought she did it really well, right in line with the style of her other books, but new!
i watched knight and day and immediately needed a book like it and this came pretty damn close. very enjoyable but i felt like we kinda moved quick, especially towards the end. i thought the conflict was kinda unnecessary as well and while i got the objective, the execution wasn't thaaaat solid enough for it to have been worth the reader's time. i wish it was a stronger conflict/resolution but it was a little too easy and predictable.
I loved listening to this audiobook! The narrators fit the story so well and I especially loved the female narrator, Hallie Bee Bard. Her voice was joyful and perfect for Mackenzie. I loved Jace and Mackenzie’s meet-cute and his protective nature throughout the book. This was a fun spy romcom and I’m really looking forward to listening to the next one.
I listened to the advanced audio courtesy of NetGalley and Dreamscape Media.
This was a reread via audio for me and I loved the narration! This is a super fun spy/asset, action-filled, swoony romcom that starts with a purely fantastic meet-cute and continues with so many unique situations, fantastic characters, and great character arcs.
This romance was purely meh for me. It felt underdeveloped. I know that there is a certain amount of suspended disbelief that goes along with a silly little spy romance but this one was just so cheesy that I couldn't look past it. The characters themselves were decent, however they both felt lackluster. Even though they are supposed to have exciting jobs that they loved, Jace and Mackenzie seemed so beyond boring.
The description of this book said, "brimming with chemistry, sizzling tension, and witty banter".... did I read a different book? This book had some banter that was cute but as for chemistry and sizzling tension.. never heard of her. I know that this is a "closed door" romance but there was literally one thought of sex, not even build up and fade to black. They daydreamed about making out??? How old are we??? 15???? That's truly where the book lost me the most.
Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so fun!! I loved the two main characters and it hooked me right at the beginning. Jace is a spy and saves her from a bad date, then she accidentally becomes his asset to protect. I'll read that every single time.
I also appreciate a story that is sweet with no language or spice or violence of any kind.
The narrators were great. I think they brought the author's words to life. There were lots of stories told and goofy anecdotes and they captured the flirting well. The FMC was so bubbly and the female narrator really captured that. The MMC's voice was also great and very masculine. No notes on these castings!
I am thankful I got an advanced listening copy of this audiobook, but it is also available now, so put it on your TBR!
This was painful to finish - it just kept going. A bit disappointed in how little actual plot there was - the spy narrative felt like an afterthought with the pretty vanilla/uneventful romance between Mackenzie and Jace being at the forefront. Overall this just felt shallow and predictable despite the initial plot line drawing me in.
For a spy story it’s way sweeter than you would expect. Super cute and Jace and Mackenzie are such a perfect match. They are so much fun! There was the perfect amount of spy scenes without being too intense. I loved the side characters too! They really add depth to the story. Excited for more spy stories from this author!
Excellent! I really enjoyed this roller-coaster journey with MacKenzie and Jace. There is so much mystery and suspense and a whole lot of sweet, clean romance. I at times laughed out loud. I look forward to the next adventure.
I was for sure going to rate this one a 4 star until it got to the third act and I didn't love crossing the finish line.
I loved the characters and the premise of the book. He's a spy, he needs to protect her, and he complicates matters by falling in love with her. However, she doesn't know he's a spy and is completely unaware that she's in danger as the enemy's target.
However, when the threat was stopped, I felt that the story dropped off with only the romance plot left and them working through their relationship.
I will definitely check out the sequel when it comes out for his brother's love story.
Thank you Dreamscape & NetGalley for this complimentary audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
I was approved for an audiobook advanced reader copy of Spies Don’t Fall for Their Assets and I absolutely loved it! The narrators fit the characters well and they made it feel like I was with friends while listening.
Mackenzie is a somewhat new resident to a small town and in an effort to find her place there she started a club aimed to help other residents out of their comfort zone. She loves spy movies and religiously watches them with her friend Liz. And as a way to protect her heart she rarely, if ever, goes on a second date.
Jace is an intelligence agent in an agency with his family. At the beginning of the book he meets with an asset to gain information about a software being sold to multiple unsavory players. He’s kind and confident which helps put his asset at ease.
Jace and Mackenzie find themselves thrown together by circumstance after a meet cute the night before. Throughout the story Jace is as honest as he can be and is understanding of how independent Mackenzie wants to be while supporting her along the way.
I loved this book - it was cute and fun and adventurous. There’s no major suspense factor and it does follow a common formula for romance novels. These were not detriments to me. Resembles the coziest rom com
Oh my! I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved this book from Meg Easton! I was intrigued by all the teasers and the book delivered big time! It was fantastic and fresh; pulling me in from the very first page and keeping me highly entertained until the very end. I could not get enough and I just wanted to stay in Jace and MacKenzie’s world as long as possible.
MacKenzie loves to watch spy movies with her very best friend Livi. She doesn’t date much and when she does she hardly ever gets to a second date. She never imagines that she will meet a real spy and get to go on an adventure of her own. As a spy, Jack knows because of his job he is committed to the single life but when he first sees MacKenzie something about her makes him want to change his mind. When MacKenzie is mistaken as a target, Jace is assigned to protect her, but as they grow closer he starts to imagine a future with her.
MacKenzie and Jace lit up the pages together! I thoroughly enjoyed all of their witty dialogue and banter. I loved their first meeting and how they just played off of each other when Jace came to MacKenzie’s table to help her out of her bad date. I literally couldn’t stop smiling, it was so much fun! And this was just the start because the adventure and romance kept coming at just the right pace. The romance is definitely at the forefront of the story but it was the perfect combination of the two for me. I loved the depth to the story as well, and how comfortable Jace felt being able to be himself with MacKenzie, instead of one of the aliases he usually has to use as a spy. The chemistry between them was just perfect and the first kiss was super swoony!
Favorite moments: The Meet Cute The Picnic Sharing cornbread waffles Walking the dog and getting caught in the rain The helicopter and the Gala Jace sleeping in MacKenzie’s lap MacKenzie’s Bubble Club That first kiss Jace’s family (the Intervention)
This book is a must read for any rom-com lover! It is such a fresh take on sweet romance and one I will highly recommend again and again. I loved it so much I would give it 10/10 stars if I could! I never wanted the adventure to end and I'm already beyond excited for the rest of the series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story was so fun! I absolutely loved Jace and Mackenzie. I ADORED their meet-cute and everything that followed. Mackenzie was fun and spunky and determined to live big. I really admired her intentionality in creating the life she wanted to live. Jace’s desire to protect Mackenzie was *chef’s kiss*. Hammy was such a fun side character. And their first kiss! 🔥 Seriously, such a cute book!
Edited to add: I reread this one via audiobook and thought it was so well done! Both narrators were good, though I did prefer the female. She was just excellent with her inflection and infusing emotion into her voice.
Quotes I Loved: 🦝After a single kiss from Jace, I'm completely hooked. In my defense, it was a very long kiss. And unlike anything I have ever experienced in my life. It was the kind of kiss that they base entire movie scripts around. Write songs about. Nations rise and fall because of kisses like that. I'm an addict. Like a raccoon who has discovered where the camper's stash of Oreos is. I've never related to a raccoon more.
🤩She sees my smile and seems to shake herself out of whatever she was thinking and says, "I'm sorry, what did you say? I couldn't hear over the sound of you being the sexiest man alive."
♥️She finds joy in the smallest things and it just makes life... better. It makes me better.
💯Don't spend your whole life worrying and not living.
I love spy romcoms, so I eagerly picked up this book! But while I really enjoyed the first half, about a third of the way through it became clear that beyond Jace frequently being described as a spy and occasionally wearing a slick tux, there wasn't going to be any actual spy content. There was never any danger, suspence, or even a presence of bad guys. Instead, there was a lot of telling after the fact about the (completely improbable) missions Jace and the other operatives went on.
There was too much telling in general—the reader was often told how smart the FMC was, but she never actually exibited that intelligence...—and either that or the lack of action made the book drag on a bit.
If you're after a lengthy, light, sweet romance, with no stakes or peril, this book is for you.
This is by far my favorite book by Meg Easton so far. It was fresh and exciting! I’m a big fan of the TV series Chuck and this gave me all kind of good spy vibes. There’s action and chasing scenes but nothing gets intense. The book stays firmly in the G rating so anyone can read this.
The story is about a field operative from a secret spy agency protecting the unsuspecting beauty who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The catch is she doesn’t know her life could be in danger nor does she suspect that her new love interest is a spy. And she just might have an obsession with all things spy.
It’s a book was hilarious with scenes like Livi’s “Powder Room” experience that left me gasping for air while laughing out loud. Then it had me crying happy tears reading the HEA. It was a fabulous read! I am seriously going to be rereading this again in the next month.
I seriously love Jace’s whole family and am eager to read more in this series as new books come out.
Rating: G, light action, very low angst, clean, kissing only but not very descriptive
This is my first book by this author, and I can easily say it won’t be my last. I really felt immersed in her world of spies, and loved all the little things that added up to a believable and good story. The two protagonists were so well done- I loved Jace and Mackenzie! Their romance was so sweet and the added elements of danger were my favorite. That being said, I wanted more suspense and danger than there was! Still, it was a cute and good romantic comedy, and I am excited for the next book in the series!!
This was the first book that I have read by this author and definitely not the last. The story was so much fun while also setting up such a sweet romance between Jace and MacKenzie. There was attraction and great chemistry, while also a little bit of danger and intrigue requiring a couple of quick escapes. And, of course, there was the need for Jace to watch over MacKenzie and keep her safe without her realizing it! But what happens when they both fall for each other?
I loved that the woman who was so completely into all kinds of spy movies from the various eras ended up falling for her very own handsome spy! I loved getting to know these two characters and the entire Lancaster family. I am truly excited to read future books in this series!
The dual narration was really wonderful and I thought that the narrators’ voices matched the characters’ personalities very well. This story brought me so much happiness. It’s sweet and clean with kisses only.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
