Cole and his crew have finally made it back to the Sol System, but that doesn't mean their work is done. The key to stopping Noth lies somewhere in human space, and the former Renegade aims to find it.
Unfortunately, dissension is brewing.
Fueled by greed and the desire to expand their territories once again through open conflict, a group calling themselves the Separatists are plotting an insurrection. They threaten to destroy humanity’s hard-won peace by dividing the united factions and restoring disorder to the galaxy.
It should be an issue for the government to handle. Cole has bigger problems to deal with, like a nightmare god who has his sights set on those he blames for an unjust imprisonment. After facing off with powerful enemies in faraway galaxies, human conflict is nothing, and Cole figures this last job will be a piece of cake.
But, as any Renegade knows, it's never that easy.
Sometimes a man looks around and sees humans but no humanity. Despite all the lessons learned, it becomes clear that the enemy will do anything to win. Violence begets violence, but the path to light is often shrouded in darkness.
To save everyone, Cole and his people might just have to tap into their own dark sides.
I find it odd when certain authors serialized books that follow a distinctive pattern only to change all of a sudden. In this instance, the Slip Runner books, like every other of Chaney's series were action pact and fast pace. Once the story got moving, the pages just blurred. So it surprised me when, that early on in this book, Chaney and Lerma slammed on the breaks to tell a tale about politics, factions, and separatist, oh there is a bit of treasure hunting.
Long-short, this book was too long for what ultimately was characters positioning themselves for the final conflict. Not a whole takes place from page 1 to the epilogue, and what's there could have easily been condensed down to a short novela.
One book left for a series that's been meh since the beginning. No more renegades Chaney, unless you're resurrect The Renegade series, these knockoffs are cutting it.
It feels like these books can't top themselves, but they seem to do so each time. I'm really into this series and now that I finished binging the series I'm now waiting for the last to come out. I can't wait!! That's all I'm saying because I can't give any spoilers.
There were lots of ups and downs, for the team members. The story continues through their most recent tasks. The words of the Mother make believing the news difficult but their task goes on! I am seriously looking forward to the next installment?
I really like how all of the characters have pulled together and become a unit; a family. This book does a good job of setting things up for book 9. I'm ready to get started!
