Der Tag der Hochzeit

Rate this book

My initial impression of this book is that it's excessively lengthy. It could easily shed around 50 to 70 pages without affecting the story or plot. There were sections that felt unnecessary. However, the latter half of the book appealed to me more, and the ending was particularly impactful. Initially, Alice seems somewhat unstable, but as the story progresses, it becomes evident that this is not the case at all. During her temporary relocation to Corfu, her character reveals a more likeable side. The overall direction of the book becomes apparent, but it takes an unexpected twist, keeping me engaged until the end.

It’s pretty much a given if Sue Watson writes it, I am going to read it! I found The Wedding Day to be a shocking, twist filled and gripping book. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, Watson threw in another twist which proved just how wrong I was! I love it when this happens.

Alice was devastated about her divorce and that her ex-husband, Dan, had moved on. Wanting to leave everything behind her and to escape her troubles, she flees to the Greek island of Corfu. There she becomes fast friends with Sylvie and meets the charming and handsome Nik. Things are looking up until Alice and Nik's wedding day when he is arrested...

I thought I had things figured out, but I was so way off course that it wasn't funny. The book has tension throughout but after the wedding day, the tension amplified as did the sense of unease. I was on the edge of my seat flipping the pages, wanting to know more. Again, she fooled me, and I was left wondering about the outcome until the very end. Watson knows how to shock readers and this book was no exception! The setting is amazing, the characters are an interesting yet not very likeable bunch that worked perfectly in this book.

Shocking, well written, twist filled and hard to put down!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

** Happy publication day!! **

A bit of a slow burn domestic thriller, but it was still good and 3.5 stars rounded up for me.

Just to start, I'm glad I didn't read the synopsis before I read this as it meant more mystery throughout the less thrilling parts of the story so my suggestion, if you're a Watson fan, is to go in blind. I think that if I'd have read the synopsis, I may have been less inclined to keep coming back to this.

It felt like this was taking ages to get in to. I don't think much seemed to be happening until about 50%, other than ofc character building etc. Even though I'm a sucker for fast paced books, the unreliable narrator was intriguing and kept everything moving along, even if slowly.

I could not and still cannot believe some of the twists at the end. I think it's about the 80% mark where you just do not want to put this down.

I did have a few issues, including that there were changes in tense, where Alice is telling us about the now but then in the same paragraph it's as though she's recalling something from the past about what was happening then. This happened a few times toward the end of chapters and whilst it was obvious (eventually) what was going on, I didn't rate it. Mostly because it seems to be a way authors are trying to build suspense lately, for example (and not quoting the book, I don't think) "if only I knew then what I do now". I think references to past or flash backs should be identified with a paragraph break at least. I'm not actually sure on reflection whether we were hearing the story from her past in present day or what.

All that aside, and a couple of little plot holes on the financials front, I enjoyed this. You may predict some parts, but others were entirely shocking and clever.

I love books where women stick together or strong women support each other and there was a little bit in this one that I was celebrating 🥰.

I'll definitely check out more of Sue Watson's work after both this and The Nursery were enjoyable for me.

Am a big fan of this author and always look forward to her books and to see what she has brought to the book world this time
I was not disappointed….we find ourselves in the beautiful island of Corfu ( you can almost smell the lemon scented air in the breeze ) where Alice has ‘found’ herself after a harrowing time in Tesco’s ( saying no more on that ) and basically her life goes from bad to good to great to abysmal all in a short time…..
I thought I had guessed the crux of the story but it turns out I was miles away in certain things and I LOVED that, a real surprise ending is always a great bonus to a fantatsic read….and that’s what this is, a real psychological/drama/family/relationship thriller of a book
Well written, full of suspense and very very enjoyable

Greece, wine, Cosmos, and murder are the perfect combination in this unputdownable thriller. Is Alice a cold-hearted killer prone to blackouts, or is she an innocent victim of something far more sinister? Alice had me shaking my head and questioning some of her hasty choices. From fast friendships, courtships, and many glasses of wine, Alice is thrown into a world that is both alluring and terrifying. This is a cautionary tale to be careful what you wish for. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

Alice has had a tough time since finalising her divorce from Dan, coming to terms with her infertility, and marinating her pain in alcohol to relieve her bad dreams. After an unfortunate altercation with her ex, too foggy to completely recall, she decides to flee to Corfu to gain a new perspective. She quickly finds a new best friend, Sylvie, and gets caught up in a whirlwind romance with Nik. Life seems to finally be turning Alice's lemons into lemonade, despite her sister's panicked concern. Things sour, however, when Nik is arrested on their wedding day. 'just like Instagram, real life is never quite as pretty as it seems.'

When I started reading this story, I was unsure. Alice has a vague memory of some events, while also alluding to historical trauma, so it was difficult for me to connect. However, after the halfway point, the story really started coming together for me and I really started wondering how everything was going to be resolved. And, as with the only other Sue Watson story I've read, 'The Nursery', the end is never really the end. Overall, a good read for all psychological thriller lovers.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I love Sue Watson's books! I chomped at the bit waiting to get stuck in to this one!
This starts with a bang and I knew I was onto a good one.
The pace did slow a little in the middle, and the title didn't seem to fit with the plot I was reading...
But then, when the ending hit, I was THROWN. Where on earth the author came up with that, I have no clue. Honestly, I am in awe!

Wooooh this book was amazing. You kinda think you know but do you really know? So many twists right up until the last turn of the page.
A physiological thriller at its very best.

It's the day I've been dreaming about my whole life. As I glide down the flower-strewn aisle overlooking the Greek orange groves, in my pearl-encrusted ivory gown, I finally see my fiancé Nik. We look like the perfect couple, but not all fairy tales have happy endings. I try to forget the urgent calls from my sister this morning, and how she doesn't know I'm about to marry a man I've only a few months. His family seem a little off and he shuts down when I ask him about his past - but we've all go skeletons in the closet, right?

The pace is slow for most of the book. Alice, a divorcee, tries to escape her past in the UK and heads for the Greek island of Corfu. Before she knows it, Alice is getting married to Nik, and has a new best friend, the glamourous Sylvie. The tension and suspense build throughout this book. The characters are well developed, but Alice grated on my nerves. As the story progresses, everything is not quite as it seems, some things are just too good to be true. I felt the story dragged for a bit in the middle. There were a couple of predictable twists, but there was one big, fantastic twist I never saw coming.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #SueWatson for my ARC of #TheWeddingDay in exchange for an honest review.

This novel is to die for! Alice is having a hard time with her divorce and her ex husband Dan has moved on quickly. She’s drinking and has bad dreams. One day she runs into Dan and his pregnant wife! Alice and Dan struggled with infertility so this is devastating to Alice. After an altercation Alice who suffers from PTSD and blackouts finds out she is accused of the unthinkable.
🍷
She flees to Corfur, Greece to try to get her life back. She has been here before. Upon her arrival she meets Nik, a charming owner of a vineyard. He is widowed and she meets some new friends. After a quick courtship they get married.
🍷
He also lives with his cousin Dimitris who has a hard time communicating and is under suspicion for women missing on the island. There are posters of missing women. Alice is intrigued and wants to find out more.
🍷
This story has so many plot twists that kept me turning the pages. An incredibly fun, entertaining and twisted one!

Alice was devastated when she was unable to have a child while married to Dan. Alcohol was her medication of choice to deal with distresses of infertility as well as some major problems during her marriage. A chance meeting with Dan and his current girlfriend, heavily pregnant, has Alice fleeing to Corfu in Greece and maybe she can forget some of her pain. Making a new friend in Sylvie and a potential beau when it comes to a handsome man named Nik, it just might be that Alice’s life has hit the reset button.

The thing is, Alice left legal problems behind in the UK. She also left her sister very worried about her, always a protective mother hen to her. Alice is determined to prove that she can make her own decisions in life even if that means staying in picturesque Greece. Nik owns a bountiful vineyard and it does not take Alice long to imagine being married to Nik at the vineyard and living an entirely new life.

What a stunning domestic thriller! What are the twists? Well, we can start with Alice’s fuzzy memory issues. Is alcohol the reason that her memory is so spotty or could it be something else entirely unrelated? These are questions that even the most attentive reader might ask while reading this latest book by Sue Watson. To say that I found myself surprised is an understatement. Then, when you factor in the way the book came to an end with those additional twists thrown in, let’s just say this book was another excellent read.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The blushing bride. The handsome groom. A secret one of them will kill for…
This is a story of love and betrayal.
Most parts of this book was unrealistic, unbelievable and full of inconsistencies.
I get put off by weak and gullible main characters so I was irritated most of the time.
Are women such idiots that they had to be portrayed as one?
The only amazing thing was discovering certain secrets and twists.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. It took me forever to finish reading it - and I almost DNF so many times throughout the story. I felt like the storyline drug on way longer than it needed to, and there were things that just didn't make sense. For example, Alice goes to Corfu to "get answers" - but then seemingly forgets why she's there until the end of the story. Another - she says she has $500k...spends seemingly a lot on renting a house for multiple months, buying clothes and food, planning a WEDDING, paying an attorney, and then still has $480k left? Not buying it.

I was able to figure out who the "bad" players were in the book relatively quickly, although there were a couple of people who surprised me, and I didn't quite have the entire plot figured out. If I'm being honest...that was the only thing that saved this from being a one star review. I thought that Alice was obsessive, had addictive personality, was irresponsible and apparently oblivious to red flags because they were being thrown up all over this book. Not a single character was likeable, and that made it even hard to get invested in the story.

All in all, just not for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoture for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

The main character, Alice, is a bit of a mess at the moment. Divorced and struggling to move on and using alcohol to cope. She decides to get away and goes to Corfu. She makes a new friend quickly and then starts a relationship with NIk.

A cast of interesting characters. Some with the appropriate amount of creepy thrown in. A little slow at times but quickly picks back up again. I guessed some of the twists right away as they were obvious, but did not guess them all. I was quite surprised by one of them and that is always a good thing.

Not my favorite by this author, but still a good read.

Woah! What an ending! The Wedding Day is a slow read thriller that will let you question everything. The characters are all secretive and mysterious. The plot is good just need a little bit more. All the revelations were dump at the end. Even the big one and just brush it off at the side. The MC's mysterious black outs were not thoroughly explained and what really triggers it. I also dont like that both sisters circle their life as a serial murder fanatics that makes them more anxious and paranoid about everything that hides the true murderer. Anyway, i like the idea and how twisty it is. Its an enjoyable thriller read. 3.5/5

Now that book was a trip !

So many twists and turns - sometimes it was hard, to keep up with them all.

I tried to tell my sister about it, but was not able to describe the story to her, because I constantly forgot the little twists that were thrown in there to the left and the right !

That's why the book took me a little longer to finish...

But I loved it !

Sometimes I got a little annoyed with the main character, because on the one hand I thought that she was a lttle naive - but other times I thought that she was a little psycho...
The end of the story blew it all out of the water - and I was left with my mouth wide open.

I think this is a book you want to read in one sitting, because if you don't, then you have to go back and read again so you don't forget the little details that make this book so outstanding.

However, if you have read other books of Sue Watson, you come to the conclusion that you should have taken time aside to read the book in one sitting....like a long weekend or a mini vacay.
It's just so hard, to put any of her books down and you think, you miss something (and you mostlikely will !).

Would highly recommend this book !

Another book with boosted ratings thanks to netgalley...

Alice is suspicious of the missing women but she had no basis for her suspicions. The police in the UK want to speak with her regarding a murder but don't track her credit cards or phone? Implausible. Her marriage has zero romance and somehow they're in love? No, none of this works. And the ending is straight Scooby-Doo "and I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you kids"

The Wedding Day
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Author: Sue Watson

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Bookouture and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: The blushing bride. The handsome groom. A secret one of them will kill for…

It’s the day I’ve been dreaming about my whole life. As I glide down the flower-strewn aisle overlooking the Greek orange groves, in my pearl-encrusted ivory gown, I finally see my fiancé Nik. We look like the perfect couple, but not all fairy tales have happy endings…

I try to forget the urgent calls from my sister this morning, and how she doesn’t know I’m about to marry a man I have only known for a few months. His family seem a little off and he shuts down when I ask him about his past – but we’ve all got skeletons in the closet, right?

As I take in the guests, I don’t recognise a single person or see any of my friends or family. It doesn’t matter, though, what matters is Nik – the handsome man waiting at the altar who loves me so much.

Of course, he doesn’t know the true reason I moved to this beautiful island, or what happened to my ex-husband.

And when he finds out who I really am, it will be far too late…

My Thoughts: I do love Watson’s books. She has a way of storytelling and plot delivering twists that just keeps you at the edge of your seat. I have enjoyed many of her books. The story is a slow burn with character building until about 40% in. Even though is was slow, the unreliable narrator kept the story moving in an intriguing manner. There were some parts where the past was intertwined with the present and it was hard to identify the who/when. At a very minimum, there should be a paragraph break. Another con for me was some plot holes, however it was very slight.

The characters were well fleshed out with depth, mystery, intriguing, and creative. The author’s writing style was complex, multifaceted, suspenseful, twisty, and just brilliant. The way Watson crafts her story, she delivers the plot in twisty layers. When you think you have it figured out, boom another twist, very unpredictable, which I absolutely loved. The ending was an absolutely twisty nightmare, in the best possible way.

This was a gripping psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. It was definitely hard to put down at times. I am a Sue Watson fan and will always read what she writes. I highly recommend picking up this book!

OMG, OMG… What a freaking ending! Alice is lonely on Valentine’s Day and keeps remembering the year before with her last ditch effort to make her marriage a good one but sadly it failed and here she is on Valentine’s Day going to buy her a bottle or two of wine to help her sleep the night away. Unfortunately she runs in toDan her ex-husband and he’s with his new partner who is pregnant which is a shock and a slap to the face of Alice. They tried for so long for Alice to get pregnant and although she did she carried none of them to terms at least none with her husband. After a violent altercation with her husband that Alice doesn’t remember she flees to catch the train only to be arrested one stop later for the assault on Dan. When she is released she decides to go to Carfu,Greece, for reasons not shared with the reader or at least not yet. When she gets to Greece she sees pictures of many missing girls and one is much younger than the others but they all resemble her and she gets fixated on who committed the crime. One day in a restaurant to meats a wedding planner who immediately becomes instant friends with Alice something Alice welcomes through her she meets Nick a vineyard owner who lives with his creepy cousin Dimitri and this is who Alice thinks is the killer. Allison and Nick quickly fall in love despite his weird actions and the younger woman Angelina who openly flirts with Nick and is also equally openly hostile to Alice but he claims to love Alice and so they marry. It’s right after the wedding that things start to fall apart and OMG what a convoluted mess of circumstances Sue Watson creates in her book The Wedding Day I thought The Nursery what’s my favorite book in the one I always recommended to others that they should read for a great thriller but OMG if this book doesn’t replace that by far! Hey you put a gun to my head I couldn’t of gased the ending and I always look for great endings and wow when I say this was great I almost want to invent a new word that means great tenfold because this book was awesome from beginning to end it is a book you have to make time to read and trust me you will not want to put it down I absolutely love this book so good! I received this book from NetGalley Ian Bookoucher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Always one of my favourite authors, Sue Watson has given us another wonderful book to read.
As usual from the beginning I was totally engrossed in the story. Alice’s life is a bit if a mess, she has recently broken up with her husband and is also carrying the weight of not being able to conceive, something she desperately wanted with Dan.

One night after work she goes into the bottle shop to buy wine and she sees Dan, not only Dan but a very pregnant new girlfriend, Alice is devastated. She comes to after passing out and next we find out that Dan is now in hospital with a bleed on the brain. Alice then escapes to Corfu, a Greek island where she meets Sylvia who will become a friend but there is also Angelina lurking in the background, and she does not like Alice at all, Alice has no idea why. Next enters the love interest Nik and soon Alice thinks life is too good to be true, she may be right.

From this point on things become very interesting and the pace of the book picks up. When you think you know what is happening soon a huge twist arrives and then another throwing you off any ideas you had about where the story is going.

I would recommend this book to other readers, four stars. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions are my own.

After an altercation with her ex husband and his girlfriend which ended poorly, (with her ex badly injured) Alice decides to escape to the Greek Island of Corfu in hopes of avoiding the aftermath and starting her life over. Soon after arriving, while dining at a cafe, she meets a group of people including a lovely woman named Sylvie, a beautiful but unfriendly Angelina, and the dashing Nik Kouris. At this time, Alice also becomes aware of a rash of disappearances of young women on the Island which has her intrigued but also weary of her new friends. Flattered by Nik’s attention, Alice soon finds herself becoming romantically involved with the Corfu native and invested in a future on the Island. As the story progresses, all definitely isn’t as it seems and she learns some things are too good to be true.
This story dragged a bit in the middle, and seemed to be on a predictable path. However, a huge twist came towards the end of the novel that I definitely did not see coming. The ending saved the story for me and left the novel with a satisfying finish.
