Better to die than to swear a blood oath to a clanless night elf… Sky has had enough of being used for her magic. She’s been betrayed one too many times, and now she wants nothing more than to be left alone. But fate won’t let her hide for long. Something evil is stalking the residents of her village, and they think she’s just the person to stop it. Sky never could resist a cry for help, but the creeping darkness is growing, and leaves her no choice but to escort a handful of terrified refugees across the border— to a place that may not be much safer than their dark-magic infested town. Rhone never expected his band of outcasts to be invaded by a horde of helpless humans. They’re on the run from a voracious creature of dark magic, and the only thing holding them together is a bewitching human mage with a chip on her shoulder and a willingness to face hell itself to keep her promises. Rhone knows within minutes of meeting her that his world will never be the same, but she doesn’t want his help. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him, but the danger she’s facing is a threat to humans and night elves alike. So if he has to convince her that he’s a bloodthirsty villain to get her to accept his help? He’ll do it—and far worse—if it means saving the life of the woman who inexplicably owns his heart.A swoon-worthy tale of dark magic, devotion, and sacrifice for fans of Elise Kova, Sylvia Mercedes, and Shari L. Tapscott.
Kenley Davidson is a romantic fantasy author and unrepentant caffeine addict who believes in the power of storytelling and loves nothing more than a good book hangover. Her books include romantasy, urban fantasy, fairy-tale retellings, and sci fi, but no matter the genre, she writes stories of hope and redemption with characters you can root for, heart-pounding romance without the spice, and happy endings that might just make you cry.
Her favorite things (besides books) are coffee, k-dramas, cats, and playing cozy video games. And also scones.
Kenley currently lives in Oklahoma, where she cares for a menagerie of misfit house plants while waiting for her adult children to occasionally pop in for laundry and a home-cooked meal.

That's really what I thought when I wrapped up this treasure trove around 12 a.m. this morning. Kenley's Legends of Abreia series is one of my favorites, but the Night Elves of Aberia are carving out a special place in my heart.
characters When we got a brief glimpse of Rhone in In Darkness Forged, I wasn't sure what to think. He comes across as a bit of a rogue, and in a way he is. But hello my new favorite MMC, Rhone quite unexpectedly wrapped my heart up in a hug. He's got a poet's soul and such deep compassion and understanding for those who don't belong. Sky, sweet Skylark, absolutely devastated me. I saw so much of myself in pieces of her—especially in her desire to build walls to protect herself and the way her love and light broke through when her people needed her. Both of these characters are soft but tough and inspire loyalty. One other thing I adore about Kenley's stories is just how invested I also become in the side characters. It takes such skill to craft an ensemble cast worthy of their own series.
plot There's not a single boring moment, and everything that happens pours into a heart-pounding adventure. And I thought the spin on dark magic was brilliant. Such a poignant message and so much hope and light wrapped up in a tale that started in the pit of darkness and despair.
prose I've loved Kenley's writing since I first got ahold of her stories. Still, in this book—the depth of emotion she conveyed and her wild creativity left me absolutely gobsmacked. Her prose has only grown more beautiful, and I can't wait to see what incredible worlds she creates and what epic adventures she spins with her words next.
*I received an early copy of this book but the thoughts and rambling opinions here are all my own and given because I love this book.*
So much fun to see Rhone again after meeting him briefly in the previous night elves book. I would not have pegged him for a love at first sight kind of guy, but one look at Sky and he was a goner.
The villagers and members of Rhone’s group provided a bit of comedy sometimes, and Lesh! I need to know more about this character and the mist people..I may have to go back and reread the first book because I think that elusive kingdom was mentioned in there as well.
Davidson delivered plenty of tension in the romance, and it was nice to see Rhone and Sky help each other learn to trust again. Rhone’s true identity and magical powers were a nice surprise, too.
It was not a five star read for me because the story was a bit slow in the beginning. There was too much talking and introspection sometimes, but this is more personal preference. I do feel invested in this world, though, and can’t wait to read more.
I will also say that it is so refreshing to read clean fae/elf romance. No explicit scenes and no talking about how creepily old the elves are.
I feel in love with Kenley Davidson's books with her Legends of Abreia series and now always look forward to when her a Night Elves of Abreia books release.
I love that all her books have a perfect slow burn romance with an intricate story line full of danger, magic and self discovery.
I love that all her MMCs are protective heroes and Rhone is no exception. I absolutely loved that he falls first and that he has that instant connection to Sky. I love that he was the sunshine to her rain clouds but that he also had so much depth and hurt hidden behind a smile.
I loved Sky for how fearless and loyal she was. I loved that we saw her slowly but surely let down her walls and let herself trust in other again.
I loved that this book had a theme of darkness and light. And that though we may all sometimes fight the darkness, hurt and trauma in our lives we can turn towards the light. We can be vulnerable with those we love and let them see who we really are.
I think this quote sums up my thoughts, "I love that you have walked through darkness but never run from it. That you see me, with all my broken bits and jagged edges and dark corners, and you are ready to fight for me."
Because in the end isn't that what we all long for? To have someone always ready to fight for us? Even when sometimes those battles are from within?
If you want a wonderful romantasy this is it!
Physical Intimacy Level 2 Mild Swearing (1 bast*** and 1 dam****) Multiple third person POV
I was initially a bit hesitant when I started this book and Kenley . But as soon as we moved on from that, things started to pick up. I was once again hesitant at the insta-love (though this is mentioned in the book description, so not a surprise) and Kenley handled it well. I really don't know what I was worried about, as I've loved everything I've ever read by her.
I particularly love how both characters have so much trauma in their past, but are consistently and repeatedly able to support and reassure the other. And how incredibly realistic it was to not have characters who heal and overcome their obstacles in a matter of a few days or once they meet their 'person'. Sky really had a lot to work through, and it took time to draw out both her character and her trust. Likewise Rhone was super cute and a total f*ck up when it came to communicating with Sky. I loved that a lot of healing and time was still needed for these two (as well as some of the other characters). I always appreciate realistic characters and journeys. And still, I frequently found myself smiling while reading this book.
I like how the world of Abreia keeps getting larger and more in depth with every book Kenley writes, and I'm really curious to see if we get more about Lesh and all the backstory going on with him in future books. The night elves are a truly interesting society, though I will say I like the outcasts the most (with the exception of a certain Wyvern King).
Thank you Ms. Davidson, I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had high expectations going into this novel, having loved In Darkness Forged and The Legends of Abreia. It met and exceeded all expectations. By Blood Oath Bound is a thrilling addition to the dangerous and magical world of Abreia. It is a bit darker than the previous novels set in this world, but no less amazing.
There is a lot of mystery surrounding the backstories of our main characters. Sky is untrusting, scarred, and just wants to be left alone. She can’t, however, ignore a call of distress. She’s always willing to sacrifice herself to save others. It’s one of my favorite things about her. Now, on to Rhone. Rhone, my love! Honestly, I would risk it all for him. He’s careless, charming, a rogue, and hiding a side of himself from the world. Not to mention, he is incredibly attractive. The romance between them is passionate, accepting, and loving.
Rhone and Sky have to defy all odds in By Blood Oath Bound. Dangerous enemies, wild obstacles, and dark magic stand in their way. I smiled and cried with the two of them, rooting them on. I loved watching them grow as individuals and grow together. The ending made me so happy that I could have cried. I’m definitely looking forward to the next story in this series and beyond! Also, thank you @KenleyDavidson for an ARC of By Blood Oath Bound. I can’t wait to see what else you have planned.
Wow! I only came across Ms. Davidson's books earlier this year and I am totally hooked on them. Actually the first book I read by her was "In Darkness Forged" which is the first book of this series. I was immediately anxious for more and found the "Legends of Abreia" series which I truly devoured, loving every one of them. (My daughter has been listening to them since and is now about to finish book 6 of that series, the conclusion, and is already asking me what comes next!)
By Blood Oath Bound is a story of two broken people who have been hurt and misused by family and friends and have their own methods of dealing with their brokeness. In spite of this, each of them has a hero's heart - willing to step into danger for the sake of others. There is a voracious creature of dark magic taking over the town where Sky has been attempting to live in isolation, so she is conscience bound to lead the people to a place of safety, having experienced this darkness previously and knowing personally the dreadful evil of it. Their only option is to cross into the territory of Night Elves which is forbidden to them. Here they are found by the "wildings" (basically outcasts of the Night Elves).
Rhone is the 'leader' of this band of outcasts who have recently been given access to this piece of territory, and who is responsible for casting out any human trespassers. In Rhone's first run-in with Sky, he is immediately and inexplicably drawn to her -- almost like darkness being drawn to light. In his desire to keep a connection with her, he makes a 'blood oath' with her, not realizing that in doing so, he has strengthened her distrust of him.
Both Rhone and Sky have many scars and layers to them -- layers of hurt and self-protection and guardedness. Yet, as the 'fragile' humans need Sky's protection and Rhone's band of wildings join him in a commitment to help them, their truest selves begin to be revealed. There is a beauty to the contrast between Sky's magic and Rhone's magic - and as Sky begins to see behind Rhone's facade to the heart of the man, and as he allows her to see his secret shame, a deep bond begins to build.
This was such a heartwarming romantic story, in spite of the dark magic and seeming harshness of the atmosphere and of many of the characters. The characters are all so well drawn from Bartimer, the earnest town mayor, to Varien, the young and somewhat unstable wilding, to "Lesh" (is he good or is he evil?). Each one becomes a three-dimentional individual that we want to know more. But ultimately Rhone and Sky truly shine and the story's conclusion is absolutely wonderful. I hope to hear more of them as we continue to travel through Kenley Davidson's Abreia!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves romance and fantasy and stories of redemption! I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of this book with a request to leave a completely honest review. My honest review and opinions are stated above.
By Blood Oath Bound was an action packed and enjoyable read that I highly recommend. I received an ARC of this book and I am happy to review it with my own thoughts. Davidson’s fantasy romances are quick to draw in readers and this one was no exception.
Sky was a strong, yet relatable, FMC who reluctantly takes on the burden of saving her village. I enjoyed her prickly demeanor, and it’s no wonder that she’s turned out so pessimistic considering her past. I loved how Rhone, the MMC, slowly drew her out of her shell and showed her how to love and trust again. I am definitely a sucker for the endearing nick names Davidson’s male love interests tend to bestow on their ladies.
I am deeply enthralled by the magical world of the Night Elves and I was happy to see even more of the creatures that bring it to life throughout this book. I loved the addition of the squirrel side kick and I hope he turns up again in later Night Elves books.
I think this was one of the best epilogues in Davidson’s books so far, and I loved the emphasis on community and finding a place to belong.
This book easily held my attention and I had trouble putting it down! I am definitely excited for the next installment of this series!
To quote the book itself, this was just utterly perfect!
Although it’s a standalone book and absolutely wonderful as is, having read previous books from the world of Abreia makes the story a little richer. Abreia, and especially the lands of Dunmaren, home of the night elves, are beautiful worlds that I love to sink into with each new story that’s released. Also, as I’ve previously mentioned in other reviews, KD writes characters so incredibly well. Some of my absolute all-time favorite characters, such as Kyrion and Leisa and Tal and Aislin, have been brought to life by KD. I always enjoy getting to know them and I always think going into a new book, “how could I possibly love this character as much as the others?” and somehow she always makes it happen! And now, Rhone and Sky are added to my favorites list. Rhone is NOT too much. He is utterly perfect. *chefs kiss* He’s sweet, compassionate, and charming. Strong and protective even while struggling with his own perceived shortcomings. Sky is the same. I love how the characters are never perfect, but they are always likeable. They learn and grow along the way, and are better together, working as a team. This book also had some great side characters, including Bartimer, Lyniel, and Calanor, and a fluffy little chinchilla/squirrel creature :) I love the plots of her books, but to me, the characters are always the shining stars.
Speaking of plots, from the very beginning, this book jumped right into the action and got the ball rolling, which I always appreciate. The main threat was intriguing, but the character development and romance was more important to me. I liked how the plot slowly unfolded, and as it did, we learned more and more about the characters and their past, which is what drove their relationship forward. I’ll note that I absolutely positively adored the first Night Elves of Abreia book with Tal and Aislin, but where that book was more action filled and a little more adrenaline inducing (especially if you don’t like spiders), this book was softer and sweeter. There were some really poetic passages that I just loved. “Perhaps, but he thought it was more than that. He had never felt anything like this for Lyniel, or the other females who had traveled with his band for a time. Never felt as if they were a fire that could burn him- but one that lit up the darkness within like a beacon of warmth and hope.” The book is full of passages like this- how can anyone who loves a good HEA resist?
I have to say, I loved the little twist/reveal towards the end of the book. I did NOT see that coming, but I loved it and I sense a great story coming there…. I for one would be ecstatic to read more on that! And I also loved seeing Kyrion referenced at the end (IYKYK) 😉
Like all books from Kenley Davidson, I HIGHLY recommend this! My only regret is that now I have to wait a while for more stories from this world!
“By Blood Oath Bound” was my introduction to Kenley Davidson, and I am thankful to have another author added to my clean fantasy romance list. I have always had an affinity for night elves, and found the world Kenley created for them to be enchanting, full of both wonder and danger that encourages the protagonists in their growth arc. Sky and Rhone are uniquely matched in a way that allows them to recognize their self-worth and accept the hope they are afraid to have.
What makes the difference between success and defeat for them in the final confrontation is their willingness to trust and support each other…and themselves. That Sky and Rhone’s capability to trust themselves is first planted by the other’s belief in them provides depth to their romance. This depth further establishes their bond as mutually fulfilling, creating a sense of satisfaction in the reader as well.
On occasion I was taken out of the romantic scenes by additional description or language that felt unnatural to the flow of the scene. A gentle touch or a moment of hesitation is all that is necessary for me to understand that a character is offering more closeness without feeling like they are forcing their proximity on the other person. I understand why the author wanted to be clear about the willingness of both characters given the blood oath between them, but as most communication occurs through body language and Rhone was careful to look for mutual desire, I felt the additional description of his actions was unnecessary.
“Of Blood Oath Bound” also satisfied with side character development. I was both amused and touched by the change in relationship between Sky’s human companions and Rhone’s band of night elves. They demonstrated the ability of compassion to overcome fear and disdain, forging a future of greater peace among formerly divided communities.
I would recommend “Of Blood Oath Bound” to anyone who enjoys sweet, clean romance intertwined with character growth. What is most compelling to me about romance is the way the protagonists are left forever changed, and I felt Kenley delivered that.
If you're in the mood for dark fantasy with action, romance, a dangerous blood oath, and sweet, swoony romance, then this book is perfect for you. You've got hot and sweet elves, magic, a feisty but flawed heroine, and of course, plenty of romance (clean as always, with all of the feels).
I'll start by saying Sky is a bit difficult to love at first, but she grows on you like a beautiful flower. She's the ultimate soft-at-heart-but-grumpy-on-the-outside heroine who's practical and funny with a heart as wide as an ocean. She's also surprisingly gentle with others even when she's frustrated. It's both infuriating and adorable to watch her and Rhone interact since he's curious and smitten while she's at her wit's end. Not to mention, she's got some serious emotional scars that she handles quite beautifully, but it's heartbreaking to read what she went through. Poor dear needs a long hug and some friends, I tell you.
On Rhone's side, he might be my favorite night elf yet. I love Kyrion and Tal, but Rhone is such a secret softie who's curiosity can't help but get him in trouble. I love how he is so infatuated with Sky but can't even figure out why. He's adorable but also broken like Sky, and he ALSO needs a long hug.
The overall plot is paced very well with lots of action and tense moments but with enough swoon and emotional moments to keep you smiling. I will say, though, that it's a tense book. Lives are on the line constantly, and the revenant is no joke. Combine that Rhone and Sky's hesitation to trust and their pasts coming to light, and you've got one hefty storm a' brewing.
My one downside with this book is actually the revenant—I felt a bit lost because we hadn't yet been introduced to the lore. Which isn't a bad thing, it's just I sort of expected to have seen it since we usually get some slight cameos from book to book throughout the Abreia series. But overall, this was an amazing book that will earn your heartache and your smiles. I'm so glad I received this book early in exchange for an honest review—definitely an amazing trade on my end!
I absolutely loved everything about this book! Sky was an amazing FMC! She had so many flaws, but her redemptive qualities just outshone every single one of them. Rhone was a fantastic MMC, and the absolute perfect match for her. These two characters were absolutely perfectly imperfect, which made them so much more like-able and believable for me in this story. Sky is basically a female hermit, trying to shut herself away from everyone. If she doesn't let anyone close to her, then they never have the power to hurt her. She's been hurt and betrayed by the most important people in her life, and in her experience everyone is a self-serving, liar. In spite of her major trust issues and general dislike of people, she's incredibly honorable. When the village she's living in is in danger, she takes it upon herself to save them. But when she leads them directly into night elves territory she's afraid she's doomed them all.
Rhone is immediately intrigued by the human with rare magic. He doesn't understand it, but every instinct he possesses tells him to protect her and never let her go. Their relationship starts off extremely rocky. She trusts no one and questions everyone's motives. All Rhone wants to do is to prove himself to her and earn her trust. It's definitely a journey, but Rhone never gives up or backs down. They realize it's going to take both of them working together to defeat the evil darkness that's spreading. I loved, loved, loved when Sky began to lower her walls and let Rhone in. Kenley wrote her struggle with trusting him and herself so beautifully. And Rhone was just amazing! He was flirtatious, and arrogant, but he was also selfless and so understanding of Sky's struggles. I loved how he didn't push her for anything more than what she was willing to give. This book was such a good read that I could not put it down! Fast paced, lots of action, fantastic banter and lots of good tension. Definitely recommend this read!
I truly enjoyed this book. It had a sprinkle of everything a good moody action/romance book should be. Two broken souls bound together, fighting their personal demons while trying to find a place to call home.
Sky doesn't trust anyone as she has been taken advantage in the past for her magical powers. Building walls around her heart to protect herself from being vulnerable again, she will still help those who are in need, no matter how thankless they are. She is fiercely independent and stubborn to ask for help when she feels overwhelmed.
Enter Rhone, a night elf who keeps his own secret close. A charming nomad, he takes in a group of misfits who have been cast out for being different. He roams the lands but aches for a place to call homeland.
Sky crosses to Night Elf territory where she becomes bound to Rhone as a means for protection that she does not want. They are put to a test to work together while denying a growing attraction to each other. Believing they are unworthy of love and affection but hold on to hope to find it.
Despite their differences, they learn to accept who they are and remain true to themselves as they embark on a journey to help the citizens back into their home.
This story has redemption, acceptance and found family. I absolutely enjoyed this book from beginning to end.
Read this if you love morally grey, grumpy FM, morally grey sunshine -broken MC, found family, action, adventure, dark magic, shifters, swoony moments and magical creatures that go bump in the night. A prefect moody read to satisfy any moody heart.
Another author who will be an auto-read/auto-buy for me. Thank you to this author for allowing me to read an Advance Reader Copy of this book!
This is a top notch fantasy book with complex characters, surprising plot twists and even a little romance (clean romance at that) and I fell in love with Rhone and Sky and can't wait to see where this story goes.
JUST SIMPLY WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
I have had so much going on but had to finish up this book so that I could post my review and encourage everyone to go out and get a copy of this book in whatever format is your preferred means of choice. I read this as an e-book but will be getting a physical copy (hopefully a beautifully sprayed edges of course).
I didn't get a chance to read Book 1 before having to read this so I could get my review in but I will be going back to read that right away. You can start with Book 2 but if you can, just go ahead and read Book 1 (In Darkness Forged) then read this book and you will not be disappointed.
The MMC (Rhone) just has this strange way about him that draws you in and when he meets our FMC (Skylark aka Sky) he is immediately smitten with her and doesn't know why but he will do anything for her! This book is nonstop action and adventure, with elves, magic, dark magic, and a little romance. I was laughing and smiling and then crying throughout! Both Rhone and Sky have gone through a lot and have their own demons they are struggling with but through-out this book we find they both fall for each other more and more and in the end.
A year ago, she had sworn an oath to use her magic on behalf of him and his people and to always be honest with him and to never, ever leave him (EVER!)
Thank you for allowing me to receive an advanced reader copy of this amazing book. I am leaving this review voluntarily!
I have been looking forward to reading Rhone’s story for a long time. He was such an interesting side character in, In Darkness Forged, that he stuck with me long after I finished the book. I really wanted to know more about him….and why he wore an eye patch! 😅 (By the way, the answer to why he wears that eye patch? Totally threw me, I had NO idea that twist was coming!!!)
Aside from learning about Rhone, I was really happy that the story immediately pulled me in. Skylark and her village had a serious problem on their hands, and even though she really didn’t want to deal with it...she did. The reluctant hero is one of my favorite tropes, and I enjoyed seeing that in a female lead. On that note, Sky is one of my more recent favorite female leads because she is strong, compassionate, and snarky but also incredibly kind. Sometimes that is a hard balance to find, but Davidson did an excellent job with her character.
Overall, it was a well written story with excellent pacing. It had romantic tension with cute nicknames and without spice. I just really really loved Sky and Rhone together. When both members of the couple lean into the imperfections of the other and accept them for who they are? *chef’s kiss* There was also a beautiful found family theme which I loved. Rhone is the best “dad friend” ever. 🥹 I would 10/10 recommend reading the book. I’m so grateful I got to read it early and share my thoughts on it! I’m obsessed with these Abreia books! 💜
This story blew me away. I have been in love with Abreia since I read Of Promises and Thorns years ago.
Sky is the first female mercenary that I absolutely love, I was invested in her by the first chapter. Every other female mercenary I've read has either been unbelievable as a woman or sometimes unbelievable as a person. Sky is neither. Her fighting spirit is coupled with thick walls to hide what's left of her tender heart. She's tired and bruised and scarred. She wants to keep to herself but any time a villager comes to her in need, she can't turn them away.
Rhone is the perfect blend of dark, dangerous fae, charming rascal, and broken sunshine. He is incredibly loyal to his band of brothers and he's determined to keep Sky safe not just at any cost but even at the cost of her perception of him. Without actually being the morally gray villain that raises 13 different red flags (while professing 'love' to the heroine) he's willing to appear to be the villian if it means defeating the dangers threatening his people and keeping Sky alive.
(He does actually raise a red flag but in his defense he's got the strangest "panicked-when-talking-to-a-girl" moment I've ever seen.)
The plot kept me turning page after page. I needed to see how it ended, I wanted to know the secrets Rhone and Sky alluded to in their individual histories, I needed to see them heal. And Kenley Davidson did not disappoint!
*I received this as an ARC and all opinions are my own.
Blood Oath Bound, by Kenley Davidson, is a wonderful clean fantasy romance. It starts out with the main character, Sky. She has a particular magic that allows her to know if someone is hiding something. She has been betrayed by someone she thought loved her. Yet even in this betrayal she feels a strong need to defend the people in the small village that she lives in. Dark magic creates a revenant who tries to destroy the people and she moves her village to the other side of the river as she believes the revenant cannot cross moving water. Unfortunately, the night elves live across the river and she fears she has traded one evil for another. Meeting the leader of an outcast group of night elves, Rone, will Sky learn that trust and love conquers all? And, what happens when the revenant crosses the river? Will Rone's and Sky's special powers be enough to save the villagers and other night elves? Read the exciting and wonderful book of how two broken people can put aside their differences, conquer evil, and learn to trust one another! Although this is book 2 it is a stand alone story, and best of all, a happily ever after with no cliffhanger. I received an ARC copy but these are my own comments. I strongly recommend this book to read. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
I enjoyed this one! Sky is determined that her safe place is in living alone. But when she's called to help a village full of helpless people, her protective side can't leave them to face death alone. But the other side of the river holds a different type of danger--and maybe love.
I loved the characters in this story. Sky is fierce, determined, and loyal even when she doubts the loyalty of others. Rhone is the perfect partner for her. He's dangerous, often amused, and interesting in a James Hook/Once Upon A Time type of way. I loved the banter, the swoony romance, and the twists (one in particular caught me very off guard and now I'm hoping the next book is all about that one specific character--no spoilers!). The world-building is great, the secondary characters are loveable (or not--some are downright frustrating), the villain is worth hating, and the romantic tension is just right.
Perfect for readers looking for that Once Upon A Time nostalgia and those who like to read Tara Grayce, T. A. Lawrence, and Shari Tapscott.
Rated PG-13 for violence --clean romance (some kissing/holding, no sexual scenes) --moderate violence (death, moderate gore on one occasion) --some language (used on one or two occasions) --mild torture/abuse
I received this ebook ARC directly from the author without expectations of reviews. My opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
A human former mercenary and Night Elf leader of the Wildlings team up to defeat a revenant of darkness that is danger to both sides of the river.
After experiencing betrayal after betrayal our h, Sky has finally left her past behind to settle in a small quiet village in the hopes of being left in peace. However, her unique magic of general 'finding' and all of its unique applications leads the townsfolk to come to her when large or small things go awry. Sky is somewhat disgruntled by the towns folk, but when a sudden evil starts to infect Sky's little village town she is transported to her past experiences, and knows the village must flee at once.
This leads her, and the 40+ townsfolk to tread across the river into Night Elf territory even if it could kill them, as it would be kinder than dying to the Revenant's twisted magic. That is when she meets the one eyed leader of the Wildlings Rhone who is more than willing to toss the human's back across the river- danger be damned- that is until he lays eyes on Sky and his whole world changes.
Knowing that the revenant is a darkness that must be defeated and trying to protect their respective people, the unlikely duo teams up to take out this devastating evil. But can these two leader's get past their own pasts in order to come together as a team...in more ways than one?
I received this book as part of ARC reading group and I have really liked all of Kenley's Abreia books but this one both broke my heart and made me so happy. We meet up with Sky, a mage and former mercenary, who really doesn't feel like she is part of a village, but always steps in when asked. She saves her village by taking them into the night elves territory, knowing that there could be a risk, but it is the only way she can save this group of people. While she is trying to figure out how to proceed, they encounter some outcast night elves. They are lead by Rhone (we met him in a prior book) and while he is somewhat bewildered by all of these hapless humans on his side of the river, he decides to help. He is intrigued by the human mage who really doesn't want his help or opinion. But does that stop him? Absolutely not, because he feels a strong connection to this human and so he does what he feels he has to and makes a bond with her. Along the way, they start to realize that they are in serious danger and they have each others back and protect both humans and night elves. Do things go smoothly? Of course not. But is the a HEA, of course. And let's not forget the squirrel, that one I really enjoyed reading about. I see a story there. Read this book, you don't necessarily need to read the entire series, but it does help give you perspective into this world.
I've read most of the Abreia series, but not the 1st Night Elves book, so I was familiar with the region & the Night Elves, but didn't have any background context from the previous book. Maybe I missed some connections to the previous book, but I didn't feel like it made a difference in being able to read & enjoy this book as a standalone.
This book was incredible - compelling from the opening chapter. The reason fueling Sky's desire to stay aloof from the villagers wasn't entirely clear initially, but the details were gradually revealed as they related to the main story plot. Getting to see this story from both Rhone and Sky's perspective was perfection. There was a lot of character growth and development and wounding and fears that could be shown via the swapping perspectives in a way that added a lot to the depth & complexity.
Even the secondary characters showed growth and change. While it was definitely a romance with a HEA, that wasn't the only plot point and the book absolutely benefited from that. The enemies-to-lovers, growing trust, and willingness to sacrifice because of love were some of my favorite elements. There was some humor, some lovely bits of description & dialogue, and enough tension that I stayed up too late needing to finish this story!
I received an advanced review copy, but opinions are my own.
I was looking forward to another story about the night elves and was not disappointed. Though I felt that this was not as focused on the night elves culture, it was still riveting. A gripping first chapter introduced Sky and her background very well and created suspense for her character development.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the tone of this book is a bit darker because of the nature of the threat that Sky and Rhone are dealing with. I wasn’t so concerned with it but good to take note of.
Development of relationship between Sky and Rhone is quite gradual, which makes sense with Sky’s reluctance to trust. Eventually some of Rhone’s layers also get peeled off and his issues are revealed as well. I felt that Rhone’s issues could have been explored a bit more since a lot was revealed near to the end, but it was still a lovely ending with the loose ends tied up.
All in all, an enjoyable story and a great addition to the night elf universe!
A couple of my favourite quotes: She shot him a look that said he was not very bright for an adult. (Kid to Rhone when he asked if she knew anyone there) “She may stab you when she wakes up” “Rhone, this is a flying squirrel. It is the size of a kitten. The only thing it can kill you with is cuteness.”
By Blood Oath Bound is my first venture into Kenley Davidson, and I read through the well crafted story in a little over a day. The protagonists are interesting and believable, each of which are led by their honor and compassion for others, even as they struggle with the darkness of their past. I love the unique fantasy elements found in this world, the various creatures, the magic of both the night elves and the protagonist Sky, and even the evil malice the heroes fight against.
The primary reason I chose to read Kenley’s work is for romance, which was written beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the protagonist’s story unfold and the development of their deep connection. Additionally, the emphasis on the importance of relationships, and how powerful those connections can be, is a powerful message. In those bonds, people can heal and grow, overcoming the struggles of the past.
The story is a little dark at times, and has a few notes of modernity in the expressions and word choice that pulled me out of the reading. Still, the story enraptured my attention, and I would recommend this book to lovers of a clean fantasy romance who enjoy seeing the beauty of connections and their restorative capabilities.
This is another fantastic and perfectly crafted story by Kenley Davidson.
Sky, a mage, is a strong, capable, but broken woman who just wants to find peace, trust, and a place to belong. This book starts off with danger, and she is determined to save all the people in her village, whom she barely knows, from the evil that has fallen on their doorstep. Their flight leads them into Night Elf territory, where they meet with a group of windings who are supposed to prevent humans from entering their lands. Instead of driving them away, they form a tenuous truce that becomes more when they find common ground in their fight for survival.
Rhone, the leader of the wildings, is drawn to Sky and wants to prove to her that he is someone she can trust, someone who will never abandon her to the darkness. They each face their demons while working towards defeating the evil that is a threat to both the humans and night elves.
The ending was a perfect show of how the relationship of trust between two peoples can blossom when given the chance.
This can be read as a stand-alone, though you'll want to read all the books in the world of Abreia just because they are fantastic fantasy adventures.
I quickly downloaded this book to my kindle before a flight. I had recently read the first book of the series, so I felt safe continuing. I research each book before reading to make sure I don’t run into any content I want to avoid. Since I already knew the author, I plowed ahead and was not surprised.
Kenley is a no-spice fantasy romance author who writes characters with morals I’d actually like to emulate. I really appreciate that about her writing (mind that I have only read two of her novels). Morally grey characters are fun in theory.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first. It felt a bit formulaic and anticlimactic. I love a good ending, but the amount of ‘happily ever after’ in both books did not endear me to the rest of the series. There were so many parallels between the two books that I assume the next book will feels the same.
The driving conflicts also seamed tedious. There was always a new dangerous creature that needed to be dealt with. It got old.
I finished the book in one sitting on an 11hr flight. It was entertaining, felt good, was easy to read, and I never had to worry about running into spicy content. I may not be diving head long into the next book of the series, but the next time I need a quick read, I know I can count on Kenley Davidson.
By Blood Oath Bound is the second stand alone story in the Night Elves of Abreia series. It sees Sky, a mage and former mercenary, forced to take responsiblity for a village of humans when they are forced to flee into Dark Elf territory. There she meets Rhone, the leader of a group of Night Elves charged with protecting the border, and they form a tentative alliance. It is probably fair to say that this book is a little darker in tone to the various other Abreia books due to the nature of the renevant menace and the personal trauma in the pasts of both main characters, but there are also elements of light and hope to balance it out and of course in the end a happily ever after. The romance is sweet and clean and despite (maybe because of) the love at first sight aspect it is handled well and realistically for two people with broken pasts. Despite being a stand-alone story with (nearly) all the narrative threads nicely tied off at the end, I do wonder if we will be seeing more of Lesh and his mission in the future. Overall, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I can't wait to read more in this world.
Kenley Davidson has done it again! I loved her first book, In Darkness Forged and really enjoyed the adventure. In the first book you are introduced to the "Wildings" but not more than a scene or two. This book tells more of the formation of the Wildings group and adding a human Wilding.
All Sky, a human mage, wants is to be left alone, but when she manifests her powers, the town she settled in now is constantly needing her help. Yet this time this request may drudge up too many memories and fears from her past. Yet her responsibility to the towns people is stronger than fear. When she encounters Night Elves, Sky makes the mistake of making a blood oath with the Wilding leader to save them. Rhone has formed his own family with other outcasts and made a bargain to create a place for them all. Now just to protect it from any intruders. But when a group of humans enters their territory with a human mage, Sky, leading them, Rhone cannot say no to sheltering them and make up a blood oath to keep Sky around longer. There is something about the light he sees inside her that may help the darkness that lives in himself. Maybe she is the key or maybe something more to him.
I have been trying to support indy-type authors this year. I've read 165 books so far. I would have to look, but a lot of those are smaller publications or ind- type books. One series I've been reading through is just not really my thing, and I've been pushing through. Last night, halfway through the second book, I was like, you know what? I'm stressed out, but I want to read something fun that's going to make me feel better. So I took a gamble, switched gears, and started The Dragon on 23rd Street after I finished both Night Elves books. Got 30 pages in. I love it so far. Her writing really is just so pleasant. It has some tropes that are not normally my favorite, but she does them so well they are enjoyable. I don't feel like I wish I could skip ahead like I do in some longer books. Thank you. The romance doesn't make me cringe or embarrassed. The male characters are strong; the female characters are not overlying strong or overly weak. So far, no one has made out-of-character decisions. As someone who has read a lot of books this year, I know there have been some bad ones, and there have been some great ones, and so far, the two that I've read of Kenleys have been great.
I love this book for so many reasons. First, because it's a totally clean romance between an elf and a human. Second, because it's packed with beautiful, emotional and heartfelt moments. And third, because of our hero and heroine.
Words can't express how much I adored Rhone and Sky. Their strengths, their fears, their doubts and insecurities—and their love and devotion, to each other and to their chosen families.
This book drags you through everything from heart-pounding, life-and-death situations to heartbreakingly tender moments filled with love, courage, and found family.
The delightful twists, shocking turns, and the banter . . .
Oh, the banter.
I love, love, love, love this book from beginning to end. I will definitely reread it again and again with absolutely no regrets. And most of all, I'll be waiting breathlessly for the next book in this amazing, stand-alone series.
* I received "By Blood Oath Bound" as an ARC copy from its author and am writing this honest review of my own free will.
