I'll Be Alone For Christmas

I’ll Be Alone For Christmas is a suspenseful novella filled with terror, a dash of gore, and packed with Christmas spirit.

Romee's winter break was planned out months ahead. A week at a cabin in the woods sounded romantic, and maybe it was just what her boyfriend of two years needed to pop the question.

Instead, he proposed they break up, a week before they were destined to wake up Christmas morning, happier than ever. Heartbroken but undaunted, Romee embarks on a solitary journey to the remote cabin, yearning for peace and closure in the tranquil snowscape. Six nights of isolation, wine, and TV shows seemed like the perfect remedy for a breakup.

Yet, from the moment she arrives, an ominous presence clings to her. The house is old, creaking and shifting, as if harboring another occupant. Bizarre occurrences escalate as each day passes, blurring the line between reality and a nightmare, making her question everything. She is alone, right?

When Romee decides it’s time to leave the vacation rental early, it’s already too late. Snowed in and unable to escape, she has to survive the frigid conditions and limited resources... And the possibility that someone sees her when she’s sleeping and knows when she’s awake.

An Unexpected Christmas Terror Surprise!

Romee booked a romantic Christmas vacation for her boyfriend and herself in a secluded rustic cabin high in the mountains expecting that her lover would pop the big question but at the last minute he literally dumps her. Romee is devastated and since she can't get her hefty deposit back she decides to go alone and try to recover and sort her life problems out since none of her friends are available to go with Romee for all of them had made previous holiday plans.

From the moment Romee arrives at the cabin something feels off, she hears many odd sounding noises and feels like she is being watched as well, but figures it's only because she's not used to being alone in a strange place. Six days to go and thinking this was a bad idea and maybe she should go back home when the snow starts falling and falling and then turns into a blizzard.

More noises, items which seem moved out of place almost as if someone came into the cabin which is impossible since she has never left and also she has been drinking quite a bit trying to drown her sorrows, so maybe her wine fueled imagination is creating havoc where everything is actually normal. Even if she wanted to leave now, she can't because It is wild outside with snow accumulating by the hour and whiteout visibility, plus the roads were already treacherous driving up the mountain in good weather so now it would be virtually impossible for Romee to navigate down the mountain roads without chains on her tires. Now the real terror will begin!

What else could go wrong? Well plenty more, and I've said enough and I don't want to give anything more away, so readers really should get this book to find out about the terror, the fun, the horror, the unpredictable nightmare that will reign down upon Romee.

What an entertaining and unexpected surprise this book was for myself. The storyline drew me in and I felt so bad for Romee and and her problems and I was
forgetting this was going to be a horror/thriller and it didn't disappoint once the action started. The frigid and isolated mountain setting was definitely convincing and just added to the enjoyment of the story. There were many twists and turns packed into this novella with quite a bit of dark humor as well.

Romee could be a very comical and naive character but her dire situation brought out strengths and also some serious and humorous blunders where I didn't know how she would survive in this crazy, scary, sometimes very funny yet violent and brutal situations. All I know is I will never go on a secluded trip alone! Ever!

I definitely recommend this enjoyable and terrifying holiday novella by Meyer Matthews that can be read any time of year and I look forward to reading more from this author!

My Rating: 1⭐️ what in the flying F was that…

A Christmas thriller, packed with terror a bit of gore and Christmas spirit… Romee’s winter break was planned for months. Her boyfriend who she was hoping would become her fiancé after the trip suddenly broke up with her and… She will be Alone for Christmas at an isolated cabin in a nowhere town off the grid.

Craziness ensues…

Look, I thought Christmas Thriller… sure why not. I don’t really do romance (again I am a prude I am a closed door girl all the way) so why not get into the Killing Christmas Spirit. I asked my good friend Lit With Leigh to buddy read… thank the lord you did not have to endure this one Leigh. I am so glad you didn’t get approved!!!

This book had so much wrong with it and I feel like its going to be difficult to get into without spoilers but since it’s published I don’t really feel bad about that…

So, Romee is off on her lonesome to some butt f*ck no where town for a Christmas vacation that was supposed to be filled with romance… first mistake really. Everyone warned her this would be a bad idea… however no one could have predicted how bad this would be least of all me the reader of this nonsense.

Romee is a Grade A dummy but shes heartbroken so we can forgive her for being a bit daft… however this starts with so much repetition and rehashing the issues that I think it could have been cut down by 50 pages in the first half THIS IS A NOVELLA PEOPLE… 163 pages it should not feel like its 600 pages long at 50%.

We don’t really find out why her boyfriend dumped her… her only reason for spending Christmas alone and sad is that she didn’t want to lose a thousand bucks… I get it thats a lot of money but come on girl this one ain’t worth it. Needless to say she gets snowed in… oooh shock of the century.

Weird shit starts to happen… but strange stuff like there are puddles and missing socks not even sinister shit… so I'm like ok whatever this is not that crazy and that this point I’m thinking oh for Christ Sake this is going to be a f*cking ghost and I wanted to toss my kindle into the bathtub!!!

BUT no… its not supernatural… its just some super random KILLERS… randomly banging on the door trying to drill their way through the door and then she finds out… holy shit they are already in the house… there are three killers out to get her… so at this point I am like ok… they must know her…

She systematically gets attacked by these people and a more violent version of Home Alone begins… the big dude is rolled and he seems dead and she reveals his face only to find out he’s a complete stranger, an older lady (apparently her mums age) comes in and starts shooting at her… and carrying on…

Look at this point I am just going to say… a lot of violence that she somehow evaded… she got shot and had her ankle broken yet shes running around the house on it like shes super human… and the finally she kills all three of them… Police arrive… The End…

EXCUSE ME WHO THE FUCK WERE THESE PEOPLE!!!! What was the point of this story… why were they trying to kill her. Why were they living in the basement creeping around taking socks and putting puddles on the floor…

The first 50% was a play by play of all events and the last 50% was violence for the sake of violence with no conclusion… no nope no absolutely not!!!

Overall I absolutely don’t recommend this… it was stupid and annoying AND in a 163 page novella I fell asleep TWICE!!! What should have taken me 1 day max took me three times as long because it felt like a dumb and dumber 600 page novel… not a quick novella… I know I am mad… I know some people will like this… to you I say thank goodness.. hopefully you didn’t read my review. To the author I say sorry I hated this so much.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for and advanced copy in exchange for a brutally honest review (that it seems no one else shares my views on… so ignore me), I am sorry again that I didn’t enjoy it… the cover was nice though!!

REVIEW: Don’t judge a book by its cover! If you’re looking for a good, on the edge of your seat thriller, this novella packs a punch! It’s much more intense than the cute little cover, so don’t let it fool you! You won’t be able to put it down. Snuggle up with your coziest blanket in your favorite reading spot and get ready for a holiday suspense you aren’t sure to forget this Winter season! It may be my first Meyer Matthews book, but it won’t be my last. I’d love to see a short movie of this one!

Happy Reading!

I stumbled across this one on KU’s Christmas reads. Unlike most of the sappy, feel-good, Hallmark Christmas stories I’ve been binging on this season, this one was an intense and scary Christmas thriller.

The book summary lays out the entire premise for the storyline: Brenda staying in the vacation rental that was supposed to be for her and her boyfriend, except that he broke up with her, so she came up alone. Pretty quickly, Brenda starts noticing strange and unexplained occurrences around the cabin and it’s not long before she discovers that she is being watched. For most of the book, the intensity of the story and Brenda’s fear had me on edge of what was going on. I couldn’t put the book down and stayed up late reading because I could not go to sleep until I knew how it ended.

I’m not going to say much because it’s a fast-paced, short story that can be read in one sitting. I have never been the kind of reader whose enjoyment of a story is contingent on the story’s level of believability. That is the primary reason I love and mostly read fiction. I just wish I hadn’t stayed up late reading this one. It gave me the creeps! Hence, the trigger warning.

TRIGGER WARNING: Gory and descriptive kill scenes (don't read late at night before going to sleep)

(4.5) Well okay Meyer 👏🏼 points for making my heart race. This is such a quick bingeable read that had me frantically turning the pages by the end. Note to self: always keep my Stanley nearby. This is the perfect little spooky treat heading into the holidays. Which… is kind of a funny thing to say but hey I love thrillers and I love Christmas so this was perfect. The writing was great and there was just enough info to get my invested in Romee before all the craziness went down. Solid solid debut and I look forward to the other novellas she mentions at the end!

Thank you Meyer for the gifted copy of your book!

This debut by Matthews packs such a punch! I read it in one sitting and all 163 pages of this novella kept me on the edge of my seat! I can best describe this as Home Alone meets The Holiday meets The Strangers: Devastated by a breakup to the man she thought she’d marry, Romee goes on their pre planned secluded Airbnb trip solo for Christmas. It just so happens to be in a cabin, in the woods, on top of a mountain, where her surroundings not only get snowed in but she quickly realizes someone is watching her and trying to kill her. I definitely related to her in terms of being overly suspicious borderline paranoid about what’s going on in my environment! I loved that she was no naive FMC! Romee was such a badass too when it came to confronting her stalker-although I wanted slightly more closure in terms of the motive behind her stalker but other than that, I can’t recommend enough!
Also the chapter headers are plays on Christmas songs but with an ominous foreshadowing which I loved! What a solid Christmas themed thriller and I look forward to more work by this author!
Thank you so much to the author for kindly gifting me a copy of your gorgeous book!

Don't be fooled by the cute cover, this book is very creepy...

This is technically my first adult Christmas thriller. The book was fast paced, I finished it in about a day. There was parts of the book I just felt like it was lacking something, I felt like I needed a better explanation on certain things.

The main character was so dumb at times. 🤦‍♀️ She think someone is watching her and possibly in the house. so she decides to get drunk. What a smart plan!
Overall the book was interesting, I just think some things were a bit unnecessary.

Warning this book has strong language!

I enjoyed the premise of this short novella, though I thought the ending felt a little like the writer couldn't decide who the stalker was so they just picked someone. I wish there was more of an explanation of why it was happening.

Don't be fooled by the beautiful cover and expect a warm cozy Christmas-time mystery. For a debut novel, this is very well written. A quick read if you are bored of lengthy fiction and don't want to read another mushy story about Christmas miracles.

I'll Be Alone for Christmas is a festive holiday thriller full of suspense. We follow a woman, Romee, who has just experienced a break-up before the holidays and still decides to take the trip to a secluded cabin in a snowy town for the Christmas period but is met with an ominous presence whilst she is staying here.

The gradual build up of dread in this short novella led to me experiencing so much anticipation that I got so engrossed in this story I didn't want to put it down. This is truly a captivating thriller that made me feel scared for her especially as this theme is something that terrifies me personally, I loved everything about this story.

Trip for one but not alone.

This thriller Christmas Novella was so good! I’m not typically a thriller person, and by not typically, I mean not at all and this was my first. But at only 121 I knew I could give it a go. And man was this a good one. With the short chapters it made me feel like I was flying through while still elevating my heart rate! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time she was in the cabin and was telling her the whole tell to leave. She didn’t listen and some creepy things starts to happen in the cabin she should be alone in!

Over all I highly recommend this debut Christmas thriller novella by Meyer Matthews and can’t wait to see what she writes next. This is such a good book! Such a great quick read.

Wow!
I have never read a holiday thriller before, and this story has set the bar high!
So well-written.
Perfectly paced at first, to build the suspense,
then…full scream ahead!

I was reading this at night, and there were so many times I thought I would have to put the book down to read in the daylight!
But I just couldn’t put it down!

And.. it is a novella so I could easily read it in one sitting! Which is all I think I could handle!

It’s a Fun?, Suspenseful, Thriller with a side of Gore!
Highly recommend!

I look forward to more from this author 👍

ARC review; I got this through NetGalley.

If you're looking for a holiday thriller that will hit the spot, I think this is a good option! We follow Romee as she goes to an Airbnb in the mountains all by herself after a breakup. However, strange things start to happen and she may not be as alone as she thinks.

I think this is the first holiday thriller I've ever read, but I've watched a few, so I feel like I know enough to say this was very good. It's simple, entertaining, action-packed, and a lot of fun. I could see where this was going and correctly guessed a few things, but it didn't take away from the thrill.

It's the kind of book that you can curl up with and be fully immersed in for a couple of hours cause it feels like a movie.

It will be out on October 31 and I think you should definitely get it, save it, and read it on Christmas Eve for the vibes.

“I’ll Be Alone For Christmas” by Meyer Matthews 🎄

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this ARC in exchange for a review ♥️ This novella is out now!

This little Christmas novella had me on the end of my cozy seat! As it’s a novella, you dive right into the story and that finale was amazing, I had to keep on reading. It was really fun and entertaining. The perfect book as well to smash your 2023 reading goal, but still keep up the festive spirit 🧑‍🎄 Although, let’s be real, there wasn’t much peace and joy in here, haha. With all the fluffy Christmas books going around, though, this was a very welcome change of scenery ❄️

Little synopsis:

Romee's winter break was planned out months ahead. A week at a cabin in the woods sounded romantic, and maybe it was just what her boyfriend of two years needed to pop the question.

This was such a quick and enjoyable read! The gradual build-up in the first half was genuinely captivating. While I thought I could figure out where the story was heading, I was pleasantly surprised by the ending and the unexpected direction it took, especially the spooky and scary element that the cover didn't prepare me for. The wintry atmosphere and the feeling of isolation it created were truly enchanting. My only desire was for the conclusion to be slightly more extensive, allowing for a deeper exploration of the reasons behind certain events and a stronger connection to the protagonist. It seemed to me that she appeared younger than her intended age. Nonetheless, it was an overall enjoyable reading experience.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was so creepy! I am a sucker for a book with an isolated setting.
I really enjoyed the first 80% of this book. It was chilling and I liked not knowing whether there was truly someone up to no good or if it was paranoia setting in. It was so creepy that I couldn’t read it alone! My partner had to sit with me (for protection)
This would have been a 4 star if not for the rationale. I know that sounds silly. I love a good scary book but it works better for me if the reason behind the torment makes sense. I didn’t like the reason in this book, it kind of let the rest of the book down because this was so creepy and enjoyable until that point.
I received this book from NetGalley but these opinions are my own

I just think I found the perfect holiday read for this year!!!
in this book we follow Romee as she goed to a Airbnb all by herself, after a break up with her boyfriend. But when she arrives strange things started to happen, she may not be all by herself anymore.

I recently read a book called The last word and that was one of my favorites books and this does in my opinion follow the same kind of structure plot wise. the plot is super entertaining and easy to follow, a lot of action packed scenes with also some humor in it. a super read for the holiday to read beside your Christmas tree.

I had a really good time reading this novella. The plot is straight to the point and effective with its thrilling atmosphere. There are a few pinches of humor that I was not expecting and I loved these. It was very refreshing to laugh a little bit. The main character is quite interesting and well-developed, as well as her backstory and her personality. The reveals were engaging and the ending was quite gory and I actually liked that part very much.

This was so eerie and I ate it up

Romee gets broken up with before a planned Christmas vacation with her boyfriend in a cabin located in a small town. She goes anyway to avoid wasting the money and hoping it will be some nice alone time. She gets to the cabin and proceeds with casual plans but she’s very observant and notices some weird things that hint to someone being inside of the cabin👀

The rest is intense, gorey and makes you never want to be in a cabin alone… especially on Christmas.

Definitely recommend for people who love thrillers and want something holiday themed for the December month!!

I really enjoyed this book. It painted the picture perfectly of how a woman alone could be so dangerous especially in a place where no one can get to them. I love the title and cover and how they really throw you off from what the book ends up being. Super entertaining, a fast read and enjoyable for someone who does not like Christmas themed books but wants to enjoy a good thriller!

This was a very well-done novella! I felt like we had a complete story - little background and the thrilling aspect started a few chapters in. Definitely couldn't put this one down (good thing it was short) and it was more intense than I expected. The chapters were named after Christmas songs, which I thought was a nice touch.
