SPREADING JOY: How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favourite Jeweller.
SPREADING JOY not only captures a phenomenal entrepreneurial story, but also provides rare insights into an industry that has predominantly been fragmented and unorganized.
I read this amazing account in hardback format. It's a beautiful hardcover with a glossy dust jacket. It's around 233 pages, 12 chapters with a few coloured pictures inserted in between which give a personalised touch to the story. The language is very simple & the narrative is fast paced. It can be finished in maximum 2 sittings. The story telling style makes it a total page turner.
The book begins with a wonderful story when the protagonist was shunned by a car salesman who could not gauge his financial standing which led Mr.Alukkas to buy the world's no. 1 car, on the spot. The icing on the cake was when, later on realising the gravity of his impulsive decision, he turned it into a money magnet & a brand building opportunity. This story had me invested & keen on reading the next chapter, looking forward to enjoying more such incidents.
It was endearing to note how Alukkas name was established in the UAE after the author was left with no assets in the home country post the family partition. In Mr.Alukkas's own words, he always managed to find out-of-the-box solution & turned challenges to opportunities. His risk taking appetite, a never-say-die spirit, honesty in business dealings, empathy for all the stakeholders in his business & a sharp eye on the bottom line were few of the key learnings, he took from his father.
My key learnings from this inspiring autobiography are;
•Staying ahead of the curve is strategically important.
•We make our own luck.
•Give primacy to the company's financial health.
•Humility.
•Carpe diem.
•Reinvent yourself.
•Simple living & giving back to the society.
•An unconditional, strong support by your partner let's you venture into unknown waters without worrying about your family, back home.
He says, work stimulates him & lends a vibrancy to his life. His retirement stands postponed, indefinitely.
A rare combination of genius & passion, truly.

Blurb:
Thrissur, on the coast of Kerala, is known as India’s ‘gold town’. It was here that Puthussery Alukka Joseph Varghese moved into jewelry retail from his umbrella business in the late 1950s. One of his -fifteen children, Joy Alukkas, seemed to have inherited his father’s entrepreneurial spirit. In 1986, the quest for his personal El Dorado took Joy to the modern ‘city of gold’: Dubai.
Getting to know the lay of the land, including aspects of procurement, staffing, sales and other regulations, exacerbated by the language barrier, was a challenge that could dampen any entrepreneur’s spirit, but Joy persisted and opened the first ‘Alukkas’ jewelry store in Abu Dhabi, followed soon after by another in Dubai. Just as business was taking off, the Gulf War broke out in 1990, disrupting every aspect of life and forcing Joy to return to India. Not only did a resilient Joy go back to the Gulf some months later, but he also re-established the Alukkas footprint, opening stores within and around the UAE. In the next two decades, he expanded his business to eleven countries with more than 160 outlets, and revolutionized the gold-retailing business with innovations such as the use of karat meter, the first billing so ware in the industry and board rate for gold price, to mention a few. Throughout the years, the ethos of his business has remained the same: to be the ‘customer’s favorite jeweler’.
Spreading Joy not only captures a phenomenal entrepreneurial story, but also provides rare insights into an industry that has predominantly been fragmented and unorganized. Aspiring entrepreneurs, irrespective of the industry they operate in, will find this book of immense value as they build their dream organizations.
