Marica Debono is Malta's best financial investigator, but she's facing the case of a lifetime. In the aftermath of a global financial crisis, Russian criminals have set their sights on exploiting the small Mediterranean island. Marica knows that to save her home and its place in the European Union, she must destroy the intricate web of corruption that threatens to unravel it all. But Marica's previous attempts to expose corruption have come at a high cost - her career, her personal life, and even her own safety. Now, she must walk a tightrope to restore her professional integrity and discover if her own father was unknowingly caught in the web. With the help of her trusted analyst, Joseph, Marica races against the clock to uncover the countless secrets hidden within the web. But as the stakes get higher, Marisa realises that she may not have a choice - she must risk everything to bring the web down and protect those she loves. In "The Maltese Web", one investigator is all that stands between a small island and a dangerous underworld.
I throughly enjoyed this book. The story was indeed fascinating even though I don’t know much about finance. The outline of money laundering was very intriguing and I loved the unraveling of the whole system of who and how it was done. Having recently discovered that I am part Maltese I found the descriptions of some of the ancient places of Malta really interesting and I hope to visit them someday. I have also spoken with the author, who I met at Book Fair Australia 2024, of his experiences and travels in Malta.
I found this book extremely difficult to get into, and honestly if it wasn’t a book club read I would have DNF’d it. The writing style is very abrupt and does not flow well at all, and it was very repetitive. There were quite a few things that just didn’t really make sense too. The ending fell flat for me, it was very anti-climactic. Overall I did not enjoy this book.
A top notch read that builds up to a rollicking final third. The author has an easy to read style featuring vivid descriptions of Maltese life and locations. The lead character Marica Debono is like a dog with a bone!
