Things are finally looking up for thirty-five year old Jackie Miller. She’s scored her dream job as head pâtissier at the top restaurant in the country, she’s going to propose to her girlfriend, and she’s flexing her creative muscle with a showpiece dessert that will blow the socks off of the Seattle food scene.
Or so she thinks.
When she meets a hellish princess in an explosive mishap, her whole life gets flipped upside down, and Jackie has to figure out how to juggle an unexpected breakup, an unexpected houseguest, and some unexpected feelings which might just lead to heaven on earth.
Dreams DOUGH come true, Heather Nix has written a contemporary sapphic romance! I’ve been anxiously anticipating the release of this novel for quite some time. To end up an ARC reader and getting early access to this sweet and spicy Sapphic paranormal romance was quite the treat. The fact that it’s set in my general area near Seattle was just icing on the cake. The author took a whisk-I mean risk in going from writing high fantasy novels to a contemporary romance. However, I think her decision to pair an amazing baker with a truly unexpected houseguest was a BATCH made in Heaven…or Hell? 😈🥵
I can’t wait until Heather Nix rolls out the rest of this series.
What a cute lil sapphic romance! Jackie was an adorable 35 year old disaster and relatable AF. She had her flaws and was well aware of them. She worked hard on herself all during the book. Vexx was all confident and sexy and very unprepared for the human world she was sucked into. They had a sweet and spicy whirlwind romance and made sure their partner felt loved and appreciated for who they were.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: cheating (ex girlfriend), breath play, misogyny in the workplace, mention of transphobia, discussion of sins, alcohol used as coping mechanism
Let me start this review by saying that I’m incredibly annoyed that in my 15+ years of baking I’ve never accidentally summoned a hot, demon girlfriend. It just feels so unfair.
It will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that I loved this book. We have some incredibly lovable characters, baking (one of my fave hobbies), some really top tier smüt, and of course… covert slander of multibillion dollar corporations. I mean, what else could a person want from a book?
Well, this was such a fun little romp!!! I'm a retired fine dining chef living in the Seattle area so this was right up my alley from start to finish! It was spicy and steamy in all the right places, but also a sweetly (but not saccharine) touching love story. The Seattle details were so spot on, the setting really became a part of the story, and the side characters added depth to the book - Seth Kazon has me SCREAMING (when you read it, you'll know!). I really appreciated the thoughtful touches that were baked in (haha, pun not intended but I'm going to let it ride) in a really natural way - the food descriptions were sumptuous and hunger inducing, the smut was spicy and deeply consensual in a really sexy way, the love story was well developed and enjoyable. I can't wait for more in this series!
I loved this book. It felt like a warm fuzzy blanket and a nice cup of tea on a blustery day. Of course the spice was chefs kiss (pun intended).
Seattle is a place I’ve always wanted to visit and while some places were fictional it definitely made me want to go even more.
Heather is an amazing person and author and I love her style of writing. The descriptions make it easy for me to make pictures in my head haha if that makes sense.
Also I hope Cam goes to hell with her bitchy ass Chanel wearing sister. And not the good hell where Vexx is from.
- talk about AI having negative impact on real people's jobs. - gay - gay - writing style - gay - Vexx's character: the fact that she felt like a different person (demon) on the surface than she did in Hell was brilliant. - gay - marriage scene in the epilogue: I usually HATE marriage scenes in romcoms but that's because they're usually heterosexual and it always feels like a needed step in the relationship to make it feel "real" or whatever, so... GAYgayGaygAygaY
What I didn't like:
- Dante Alighieri slander. I won't accept anyone talking shit about The Simp® - the implication that all alcoholics like drinking - the use of "the surface" (as in "the world above hell") as a synonym for " the US": the worst things happening of Earth are apparently school shootings and gang violence, and reading that in today's context was even more jarring - the absence of nuance in the little talk about knowledge: "having infinite knowledge literally at your fingertips was unbelievable, and she wondered how humanity could struggle so much, with so much accessible to them".Accessibility is relativerelative, but I get what was trying to be communicated. - lack of subplots: we get quite a few secondary characters introduced and a lot of world around the main characters but no development on that. Usually romcoms have some sort of family/work/friends related subplot that develops along the main plot so that the story doesn't feel too monotone, so it was weird to not find any despite the great potential

This book was such a joy to read (even if I cried a little at the end), and was the perfect bit of fun I needed this week! Jackie and Vexx both felt real and left me with the feeling of having spent a couple of hours with friends, not just lost in the pages of a story. Heather’s done an excellent job of keeping the romance building and alive and well without losing the plot. This is so much more than a romcom because of who Heather created in Jackie and Vexx. They’re funny and relatable from the moments of self doubt to the absolute embarrassment of knowing your partner knows what you did in the shower to the absolute joy in seeing how things work out for everyone. I only wish we’d gotten to see some of Vexx and Melissa’s success “live.”
My only criticism stems from one scene where their sex veers into power exchange and some BDSM with no discussion or prep. Vexx does check-in with Jackie and it is done (mostly) safely but it is not MY preferred method of introducing shifting dynamics. Was it still beautifully written? Absolutely. Just took me out of the story for a moment. Certainly not enough to drop a star or change my feeling on the book, in part because of how Heather handled it. It’s realistically written and handled in a way that a lot of people might find familiar.

Contemporary fiction isn't typically my preferred genre, even when it incorporates fantasy elements. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I immersed myself in this book.
I didn’t know I would love Seattle and here I am planning a visit after this read!
The prose is exceptionally rich yet avoids becoming overly complex, allowing the world to come alive around you while letting the characters' voices shine through.
“The grey Seattle rain pattered against the window, rolling down the glass in crystal-clear rivulets, catching the glare of headlights in little flashes.”
Despite the narrative being in the third person, the storytelling is masterfully executed, allowing an intimate connection with each character. I felt like I truly knew their humor and could anticipate their actions. I was not ready to leave either of them. 😭
“Jackie tried to say something, anything, but her entire body had seized up in some sort of gay panic induced rigor.”
I can’t forget to highlight the powerful sapphic sexual tension and the remarkable body representation in this story, which adds a delightful layer to the heavy spice! 💦🌶️
I'm already looking forward to purchasing a physical copy of this book for future rereads!!
✨Vexx looked down at her as though she was a slice of the most decadent chocolate cake, and Jackie liked it. She really liked it. F—k it, she thought. This woman wants me just as I am, who the f—k am I to deny her?
🍰The way I am crushing on these two amazing FMC’s, Jackie and Vexx! I can not thank Heather Nix enough for the opportunity to read and fall completely in love with her newest release!
I read Mixing Up Mayhem a few weeks back and literally loved every moment of it! Their story was incredibly fun and filled with swoon, spice, and everything sinfully nice!
🍰Not only did I love the plot, the pacing, and the relationship that develops between Jackie and her unexpected house guest, Vexx, but I especially loved the message that we can start a new at any time in our journey!
As an added bonus, It was such a fun experience to read a story where I shared a name with one of the FMC’s….I may have blushed a little harder at times 🤭
✨Paranormal Romance ✨Demon Princess… with a tail 😈 ✨Well Developed Characters ✨Sweet As Sin Romance 💝
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3.5)
🍰Mixing up Mayhem is available now on KU and I highly recommend this read to all who enjoy paranormal romances!
I cannot express to y’all the love I have for this book. This book is my new everything, and it’s everything I ever needed and wanted from a book.
💖 It’s sapphic and gay af with some of the best representation ever. 💖 The writing is so relatable, funny, and wonderful. It is so inspiring for me as a writer. It is so good I want my book to be like this one when I grow up. Ahhhh! I ✨LOVED✨ it so much. 💖 Jackie and Vexx are my babies. I love them and the other characters so much. They remind me so much of me and my wife. They are so real, and I’m obsessed with them. 💖 The story is just so cute. I cried with pure joy and love at the ending. It’s so wholesome and adorable. 💖 The spice? Excellent. Just superb.
I cannot recommend this book enough, y’all. If you love cute lesbians, pastry mishaps, demon princesses figuring their lives out, adorable romance, and a devilishly good chocolate cake recipe included at the end, this is the book for you.🥰
As soon as I picked this up I knew I was going to love it! This book had the perfect mix of warmth, humor, and heat to make it one of my favorite sapphic romances I’ve read!
First off, I loved Jackie’s character from the start. She’s a down-to-earth, relatable chef who you want to see come out on top as she tackles a break-up, a new job, and a super hot demon who falls into her life unexpectedly. From seeing Jax stand up for herself with her ex to her going after what she deserves in her career and with Vexx, I was so invested. Vexx and Jackie were such a fun pairing and I loved how they nurtured each other. And the spicy scenes 🤌🏼✨!
Heather’s humor really shines in this book—which obviously you want in a romcom—but her particular brand of humor is *for me* and I ate it up. I love how there were so many little understated moments but truly funny that made me laugh under my breath and feel closer to these characters.
This was everything I want in a fluffy paranormal romcom!
I received this book free in exchange for my honest review. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
"Things are finally looking up for thirty-five year old Jackie Miller. This book was so cute to read, Jackie is a pastry chef who was just hired at candid, a Michelin star restaurant. She believes things are on the up and up, and out of nowhere, her girlfriend dumps her. Vexx princess of the underworld finds herself on the surface in Jackie's kitchen, not knowing how she got there. The two spark up a romance that had me tearing, smiling, giggling, and fanning myself. This is a must read 📚.
2.5 ⭐️⭐️💫 I have never been more sad to give a book two point five stars. Genuinely. It was so cute and fun, it just truly didn’t have enough plot for me. My toxic trait as a reader and a review is that I’m vehemently gay, and I get very particular about my sapphic romances because of said sexuality. I typically want my sapphic romances with a lot of plot and a lot of angst, and maybe a bit of enemies to lovers energy? The lack of this and the presence of the insta love trope within this book really just made it not for me as a reader. If we share preferences, this book probably isng for you. If we don’t, yay!! I hope you read this and absolutely enjoy it!
I did love the culinary aspects though. Those parts were so fun. Maybe I’m insane, but the chocolate cake descriptions and the recipe included in the back of the book made it 100% more worth reading.
Mixing up Mayhem was the perfect cozy rom-com I needed! It is perfect for fans of cozy romance novels like legends and lattes or can’t spell treason without tea. I absolutely adored everything about this book!
First off, the two main character Vexx (literal princess of Hell) and Jackie (a human pastry chef) were adorable. Watching them grow personally and in their relationship was a beautiful thing. Heather Nix writes a beautiful romance that will have you kicking your feet and smiling.
I have to say my favorite thing about the book was the incredible level of detail Nix writes about cooking and baking. It added this incredible level of world building and really showed how much effort and time Nix puts into her work. I am amazed, once again, by her writing.
Jackie has just got a new job, patisserie chef for one of the top restaurants in the country, based in Seattle. But as she starts her new job, her personal life and her drinking habits catch up with her. And then a totally unexpected twist… We meet Vexx, an unusual character. Some parts are so funny - I especially liked the scene where Vexx explains how she can control both halves of her forked tongue independently, and my imagined look on Jackie’s face was priceless! I also liked that even though Vexx and Jackie are so different, they share a warmth, a deep connection. We can feel a lot of what these two wonderful characters feel - the writing is excellent and the story is original.
I don't normally read modern day books, they just aren't my jam. I absolutely LOVED Jackie and Vexx though! I know zip about Seattle, aside from location wise. But I loved the word building for Infernius and the relationship between the two main characters! As well as a couple of the awesome side ones (looking at you Everest!) The smut was great, the storyline was great, the food descriptions were mouth watering, loved it and can't wait to read more in the series!
What a great story! The little bit of world building works. The MCs are amazing together. It was cute. It was fun. It was sexy and steamy…🤜🏼 🌶️🥵. Sapphic rom-com done right!
I absolutely loved this sapphic story about the princess of Hell and a pâtissier (pastry chef). There are some content warnings you may want to look up before reading this book, but overall, I loved the plot and the chemistry between these characters. When things got spicy, they got spicy!!!
This was such a cute and spicy book. I loved reading about Vexx discovering the human world and Jackie becoming more confident in herself. Their love story was so adorable, very steamy and quite enjoyable.
When a bright soul chef meets Hell's Princess. A must-read for 2023.
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I received this as a Kindle story on the release day. This Sapphic Rom-com takes place in the big city life where one chef's life is drastically about to change. The Kindle version of this story was exactly what you would expect from Kindle. The end of Mixing Up Mayhem has Jackie's Recipes to make her tasty Chocolate cake recipe with Jackie's added flair mixed into the cake mix.
In the big city, we meet Jackie and Cass. Jackie is an "older" pastry chef who landed her dream job at a prestigious culinary restaurant. Jackie is in a long-term relationship with her Girlfriend Cass seemingly finally living her dream life and preparing for a proposal. It is not until Cass breaks her heart that Jackie can go on the path of self-discovery. In walks Vexx. Hells princess. A royal heir to her father's throne. Vexx finds herself in the vast human Realm where she meets Jackie. There is a theme between these two as their threads of fate seem to be intertwined. Both of our strong-willed FMCs will leave you pining for the next move as life moves forward in a very unconventional way.
I loved this story. Heather's writing style flows. I was immediately drawn to the cutesy cover and rom-com feel of Mixing Up Mayhem. Jackie and Vexx have a very personal through the eyes of the Author. That personal feel allows you to get mixed up in the mayhem that is Jackie and Vexx. I genuinely feel as if Mixing Up Mayhem was one that any Rom-Com or Romance reader needs to read in 2023. There is a reason for the vagueness in my review which would be YOU NEED TO READ THIS STORY. I will be reading more of Heather's stories because anyone could easily vibe with her STYLE. Thank you for taking me on a ride Through the story of Jackie and Vexx Heather. I will be devouring more of your wonderfully written works of art shortly.
Mixing up Mayhem by Heather Nix is a fun, cozy fantasy romcom!
I loved every second of this book! I love cozy fantasy books and have loved Heather Nix’s stories since her debut novel! I love their writing and stories! Mixing up Mayhem is so different from her previous books, but it was so good!
This cozy fantasy stars Jackie, a full-time Pastry chef who goes through a rough breakup and throws herself into her work on a new and creative dessert! In doing so, with some help from herbs and a drop of blood, she opens a portal to hell and outcomes Vexx! Vexx is a demon princess with a fascination for the world on the surface! As things heat up between Jackie and Vexx, neither is ready for it to end!
I read this book in two days and was obsessed with this book! It was sweet and had these two women finding love for themselves and each other and finding a place in the world!
If you love paranormal cozy books, this a must-read!
This was such a fast, fun, and low-angst read, it was exactly what I needed when I was reading it!
Jackie and Vexx were great together, I loved Vexx’s fish out of water perspective, and i loved Jackie making friends with other queer people at work and using her power to lift them up.
I also really appreciated that homophobia was not part of their story, and this was much more clearly about queer joy.
I absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet and SPICY little romcom, the chemistry is right, the spice is spicier than I expected (and most welcome!) and if I had one complaint it’s really I just that I liked it so much I wish it were a bit longer!
You know I love me a cozy MonRom/PNR but make it queer and even better. I loved this sweet and spicy sapphic romance. This is one of those books that will give you a break between those dark or heavy books. A palate cleanser if you will. It’s funny and a quick read and the characters are well thought out and balanced. I really hope you give this one a read! You can pick it up on KU or you can order a signed copy from the author directly from their Etsy shop!
This was really fun! I love Vexx. She's strong and powerful and while she's a demon, she's very thoughtful, too. I love Jackie, too. She's independent and fierce, but also fairly shy and self conscious... out of the bedroom that is. I love the culture shock of Vexx experiencing earth for the first time and Jackie helping her out. Overall, this book was so sweet, spicy, and fun. It had me laughing out loud at points and swooning at others. I loved seeing Jackie grow in a short time and totally crush her new job. I thought their love felt real and the pacing made sense while their outside problems felt very real, too. Vexx does live in Hell, which would make dating difficult. Again, it was just such a fun story. I really enjoyed myself.
