A change has begun. In the haste to return our local congregations back to pre-pandemic "normal," few have opted to take a step back and consider the big picture, Kingdom perspective of the new work Jesus is already doing in his church. Many committed individuals who thought they would always remain in the fold, are leaving in search of something more.
Like Abraham, these faithful pilgrims are on a journey to new lands and a restored hope for the local church. They are unlikely nomads .
Offering thirty years of wisdom gleaned from coaching and resourcing the local church in North America, Terry Walling describes the journey being undertaken by more and more passionate Christ-followers across the landscape of the church. Unlikely Nomads is a call to hear and follow the Great Shepherd to a new and different kind of church.
Unlikely Nomads is a different kind of book. It offers to those who are in search of the new church, the helps they will need for the journey ahead. It is a perfect book for a group read helping to resource a set of conversations for those traveling on the same roads together.
In it you will find... “The pandemic didn’t change the world. It was a signal of the change already happening in the world.” — Mark Sayers, Non-anxious Presence
"Terry describes the new ministry context that is calling the church to reinvent itself for Gospel faithfulness. I highly recommend this book to you." -- Jim Herrington, Author, Coach and Co-Leader of The Leader's Journey
“Many are the nomads who now are on journey toward the new. I meet them everywhere I travel. Terry’s new book offers both pastoral encouragement and prophetic voice to those now following Jesus to a new and different church. Can a book change how you view your place in the church? This one might.” — Alan Hirsch, Author and Founder of Movement Leaders Collective and Forge Mission Training Network
“The paths toward new church forms means leaders personally engaged in fresh, new postures and practices, led by vital guides. Terry Walling takes us on a journey, at some points painful, at other hopeful, for what might emerge. Read this book. Let it disturb you and push you towards a hope-filled future for the church.” — Kurt Fredrickson, Associate Dean, Fuller Theological Seminary
Terry's book invites us to process "What is church?" in a way that provides deep contemplation, honesty, and courage. Could Jesus be doing something new? Although Terry does not give THE answer, he provides and challenges with many examples of what a new expression of the church could be as well as what it is no longer. The greatest gift about this book is the space it creates to process, ask questions, and realize you are not alone.
It's a needed discussion in the West for sure. I agreed with much. Lot of Amens at points. I think there are more paths of renewal and restoration in the years ahead for churches than are captured here, but major changes and reform are needed for formation and mission no doubt.
