Whoa!! This one took a turn I didn’t expect and I enjoyed every second of it. Great pacing throughout and it was a nail biter!! This time we find ourselves in Echo Bay where death takes hold in this small town every 7 years. Hold on tight because you will be going on a wild swashbuckler ride. This story is perfect for readers who love mysteries and cursed pirate treasure. Everly is certainly talented and she has a knack for figuring out things. There is a light romance subplot but this one focuses more on the mystery behind Echo Bay.
The narrator, Amy McFadden does a wonderful job bringing Everly and the other characters to life. I was easily able to distinguish which characters were speaking. Such an addicting listen.
If you love The Luminaries, Inheritance Games and Wednesday be sure to check out this series. It has a bit of supernatural elements, academy, and mystery weaved into the storyline. This is an action packed clean YA read. I loved it! That ending was bittersweet and what a hook!

A very special thanks to the author and Tantor Media for the gifted copy.

This is an honest ARC review. This is book two and the series must be read in order. This will have a cliffhanger that will leave you hanging until book three.

Hold on to your hats and keep your hands inside the car; Everly Grimm is at it again. From the magical Grimm creatures to mysteries abound this series is a roller coaster that I hope never ends.

Book two begins shortly after book one concludes. Everly is confused but hopeful that her romantic wishes are coming true. She is also conflicted as it puts friendships in jeopardy. All that may have to wait as a new mystery is waiting. Every seven years people mysteriously die in Echo Bay and Everly and her team must find out what is causing these deaths.

With romance, pirates and a mysterious killer creature book two will keep you enthralled. Make time to read this in one day as you will not want to put this down.

The Grimm Tides is the second instalment in the Grimm Society series and I had pretty high hopes for this one since I really enjoyed the first book! The book starts off with a bang and I really liked the pacing. It had me hooked from the first few chapters and the premise was really intriguing as well. The setting takes place near a beach (as the title suggests) and this time the crew is up against ancient sea monsters. Hidden treasure, ruthless pirates, mysterious string of murders that happen every seven years- this book had possibly everything.

BUT, I really didn’t enjoy some of the characters at all. There’s a prominent love triangle throughout the series and this book focused on the relationship between Everly and Hunter which I absolutely despised. I don’t see the chemistry between them at all except for the fact that Hunter is the first guy Everly fell in love with. Their conversations always end up in fights and these characters simply don’t complement each other. It doesn’t help that Hunter always acts holier than thou. He was constantly belittling Everly throughout the book and acted like she was too immature to be on a mission when he contributed absolutely nothing. I disliked his treatment of Everly as a child SO much.

Also, there simply wasn’t enough Ian in this book. I can barely recall the scenes where he’s in charge or actually conversing with anyone. Everly’s character felt a bit different as well. She was radiating too much pick me energy whenever Aimee and Hunter were together and I couldn’t tolerate her behaviour some times!!

And the sudden character death at the end made NO sense. You’re not going to convince me that a pretty complex character was killed off to protect an annoying fucker.

Overall, the characters were a bit disappointing but the plot was well thought out and the execution was great! I’ll definitely continue with the series but I’m not expecting it to be my favourite 🫡

I love this author! I will read anything she writes. Her creativity and way with words is amazing. Some might say I am too old for YA books. I disagree. They still have a way of speaking to me.

This book was no exception on any of those counts. Everly is an interesting character. She has so much potential and life to draw from. She is smart and relatable. Her abilities and powers are developing and it is intriguing to see how.

This book has it all - mystery, treasure, love, hate, fear, swashbuckling...this fantastical world within our world is taking shape in ways I didn't see coming. But, they make sense and make me think differently.

I am intrigued to see where the next journey takes Everly Hart. I want to see more Holland (her best friend), more healing and more Birdie. Love, in so many forms, is interesting to explore.

I don't have a way with words like the author does, obviously. So, as they would say on one of my favorite shows, "Don't take my word for it."

ARC Review of The Grimm Tides by Chanda Hahn
* * * * *
The second installment to this fantastic modern day twisted-fairytale-cross-crime series that has you holding on as the thrills and suprises of this read have the boat rocking!

Everly's position at her new school has not improved as a griever...in a sense.
Not only is something strange happening when it comes to omens, but the press are following her everywhere hungry for a story. Not to mention, a certain werewolf is avoiding her and her best friend's brother is somewhere on assignment not answering messages.
Then, to her shock, she is called out on her first assignment!
Out in Echo Bay, all appears well in this peaceful town by the sea as locals drawn in a crowd with the tales of a cursed treasure...and face a gruesome mysterious death as a killer tide roles in.
Is the treasure real, and is there more to the story of Captain Lennox and his hoard of gold? Is the town hiding more than they know? Who and what is the real monster of this story?
There is love.
There is loss.
There are secrets uncovered and sacrifices made.
Nothing is ever so simple for Everly.

Loved this read! Of course I did, this is Chanda Hahn and some twisted fairytale magic!
Everly's life is taken in for another spin with drama, school, boys and work. She still mourns the loss of her father, deals with the crazy aunt, loved by her hilarious grandmother and Corvis who is the best sidekick.
Talk about awkward when it came to the boys at Echo Bay, the boys of interest one have certainly made you question who is going to get closer with Everly and who is just going to make me want to slap them.
We are visited by another old face from the first book, who we were left wondering what their place would be after the events of the werewolf incident. Plus, more grimm reveals and identities uncovered as secrets spill out to uncover the true events of this case!
Also, we are left with an epic cliffhanger!
Cannot wait to see what happens with the next book!

Reader’s Notes:

– this is the 2nd book in series, and must be read in order (this book has a slight cliffhanger that gets us ready to read the next book, but the main mystery is resolved in this story)

– this is told from Everly’s point of view (with the exception of the prologue)

– Everly’s father died from pancreatic cancer recently (occurred in the first book)

– Everly’s mother left them when she was young

– there are a few lighter descriptions of blood & death (meaning there are some details, but Everly fairly quickly switches focus off these things and moves onto something else)

Review:

I had picked this book up with the intent of reading only a few chapters, but needless to say this became one of those wonderful books that had me caught from beginning to end! I couldn’t put it down until I knew how the book finished! I liked that there was visible progress in one of Everly’s possible romantic relationships (and the other was a bit more subtle, but still had progress), though with how the story’s events ended I’m very curious how the developments will morph in the next book. I loved trying to figure out what was causing the tide/deaths in Echo Bay and a few other strange things that our characters discovered along the way. I didn’t figure them all out by any means, but it was still fun to see everything connect in the end! I’m very excited to see what kind of story book three will be with the set up from this one!

Summary:

Everly needs to leave town temporarily after a previous grimm encounter leaves the press very interested in what she has to say of the event. In order to continue developing her skills, the school sends her with other grievers far off to Echo Bay to discover why every seven years a dark tide rolls in and deaths haunt the depths of it. The locals think its due to a curse on a pirate’s hidden treasure that lures the tide to their small town, but the grievers investigating believe that there’s more to the story. That a grimm is behind the deaths. But without knowing which one, they won’t know how to stop it…

The Grimm Society is a wonderful Fantasy YA Academy Romance with a big dose of mystery. I found myself engrossed in the story and even not minding the angst that the characters felt.

Grimm are supernatural creatures and while not all are bad….. there are a LOT that are! To counter their power we have Grievers. Grievers are people who have witnessed the passing of someone else with their own eyes. They are typically children to young adults, though there is the occasional adult that might retain their powers.

This is the second book in the series and they do need to be read in order for the best reading experience.

⚔️ Violence/threat of violence/death
🐺 werewolves
🧚 Fae
💜 Sloooooow burn
😬 best friends brother

Everyone became a griever and longs to fit in at her new school. However, previous events means she now needs to go into hiding. What better way than to send her on her first mission! She is smart, young, witty, and determined. Armed with her mother’s journals and sharp intelligence she honed with her father, Everly knows more than most that you have to rely on your instincts. This has saved her in the past and will continue to do so now.

Crypthaven was another griever school that used to train people in their future reaping duties. Unfortunately, it fell under an attack. Now, every seven years another series of attacks happens and innocent people die. Everly and the gang are determined to solve the case this time and prevent any more loss of life. However, she is also dealing with her feeling for her besties brother, and some tension with the resident werewolf reaper!

This was a fast-paced mystery with clear character development and a cliff that will leave you wanting more.

I wasn't quite as enthralled with the second book in The Grimm Society but it was good. We already knew the characters we now had a different murderer to find. I'm not sure what about this book left me wanting. I loved the first one and was eager to learn more about Everly, her family past and what new mystery she'll uncover. But this story really felt all about Everly and Hunter and I'm not really for it. I get why everyone would love Hunter, he ticks all those classic boxes, great looking, smart, athletic, kind. But I wanted more with Ian. He's fascinating. I thought we might have since Everly seemed obsessed with him avoiding her at the beginning of the book, but once they went on a mission with Hunter being team lead that changed quickly.

I loved that the murder mystery was by the sea. With treasure and underwater caves, seals and pirate ships it had some great aspects. I also love when we get more detail on the Grimms that work with the school. We may not think that Grimms belong in our world but they very much are a part of it. And I love that like Cass on their team they work with them and treat them as equals. They are not all monsters in dark places.

The Grimm Tides was an enjoyable read even if it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat this time. I still can't wait for the next one!

So I really loved the first book in this series, but this one was even BETTER! If you enjoyed The Grimm Society, then you'll absolutely love this second book in the series. I read the whole thing in an entire day because I just couldn't put it down. Did I ignore my family for the better part of a day? Yes. Yes I did. Do I regret it? No. No I do not.

I really enjoyed the different location of this book even though Gravemark is a fascinating school. Growing up in New England, I feel like I was able to have a really good image in my mind of what Echo Bay looked like because I could just picture the cute picturesque town. I wish the Jolly Roger was an actual place so I could watch the show because it sounds highly entertaining.

I'm not one to overly analyze a cover before reading a book, but after reading The Grimm Tides, the cover is absolutely perfect for the story. So many details of the story integrated flawlessly into one image.

Can we talk about that ending?! What? You haven't read it yet? Well stop reading reviews and go download this book so we can talk! So many questions I now need answered and I have to wait for book 3.

Nope nopity nope.
If you're interested in petty teen love triangles, contradictions and mass confusion, then this book is for you!
None of the main characters in this book were even remotely likeable (well, maybe Cass) and their drama gets old fast. The MMCs reeked of toxic masculinity and the MFCs are painted as stereotypical drama queens.
This book is also incredibly confusing at times!
"I followed you," Josh whispered. "I was doing my rounds and saw you leave the school. I never expected to find you down here-much less dragons."
First off, she didn't actually"leave the school". She went to the library (which is in the school) and found a secret passage. And you never expected to find her there AFTER YOU FOLLOWED HER THERE!? This is just one example of the many contradictory parts of this book.
Safe to say, I'm not continuing this series. The first book had some elements that annoyed me, but the interesting storyline overpowered them. This one was just a trainwreck that I wanted to be over.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Often times I figure out who the secret antagonist is pretty early on and almost all of the time by mid-book I have figured out what the big twist is.. I was pleasantly surprised I had no clue till the reveal on this one and boy is it GOOD! Everly is a strong girl coming into her own. She proves time and time again that she is just as capable as the other grievers while also showing us glimpses that the tide is changing and her special abilities may just be the change needed for her new school. I adored seeing the cozy waterside town through her eyes and explore a 100+ year mystery that has plagued it. The writing is so descriptive that I felt like I was watching the pirate show, exploring the ruins, as well as along for their trip to Howler’s cove. If you enjoy a good mystery along with a cute love triangle that has you rooting for either team Ian or team Hunter then this is the exact book to keep you enthralled for hours on end.

Every seven years the Grimm Tide returns to Echo Bay, leaving a trail of dead bodies in its wake. No one knows what causes it or how to stop it, but a group of grievers from Gravemark are determined to try.

Everly Hart has narrowly escaped her last adventure with her life, but soon finds herself being stalked by a worse enemy that won’t relent. The press. To help her hide out until the heat dies down, she heads to Echo Bay with Ian, Cass, Kat, Hunter and Aimee on a mission. They need to blend in with the people of Echo Bay and learn what has been claiming lives there every seven years for decades.

However, battling unknown enemies may be a lot easier to than trying to stay in the same house as her crush Hunter, his very recently ex girlfriend Aimee and the mysterious and moody Ian. Relying on notes left by her mother, the instincts her father helped her perfect, and the experience of the other grievers, can Everly stop the Grimm Tide before it disappears for another seven years?

You CAN judge a book by it's cover, and look how awesome and aesthetically pleasing this cover is! 🐙🐚🦀🌊 (I love ocean stuff, okay?!) If you haven't read book one, go do that right now so you understand how Everly's story began!
Now as for book two, omg (and did I say how much I love the cover!? 😩) I was turning pages so fast trying to figure out the mystery of the grimm tide, which starts to make since towards the end, but oh boy I had no clue (which I love!) And the ending fight had me wondering if I was watching (in my head) a Pirates of the Caribbean spin off (my favorite movie of all time I might add 💂) it was so entertaining, ahhhhhhh.... 😩🐙🐚🐟🐳🦀🌊 and NOW I'm left with a big cliffhanger for the next mission in the Grimm Hacker! 😭 I am VERY excited!

And, the author does it again (wrote an amazing tale!) I really enjoy the writing style and storytelling of author Chanda Hahn.

I do strongly recommend that you grab book one and experience it first, because important information and experiences of the main character are built upon in this second installment. If you are a fan of this author's works then you may notice 'Easter eggs' here and there as you move through the story which nod back to not only the first book in this series, but some other books she has written.

It was so good that I'm about to have a second read. I was given an ARC copy of this book.

This is the second book in the Grimm Society series and it did not disappoint! Amazing book but one of my favorite authors, I couldn't put it down. This book has an amazing cast of characters( l am loving the live hate relationship between Everly and Ian), a decent amount of suspense, and actual surprise twists you don't see coming a mile away like most books. I love that it's entertaining enough for in me to want to read but also tame enough that I want my child to read as well.I cannot wait for Grimm Hacker and hope this series continues for a good long time.

If the first book of the series didn't have you completely hooked, then this one is sure to do the trick! The adventure and mystery involved is so great that I wasn't even able to guess the ending. And then the amazing cliffhanger to head into the 3rd book has me wanting it to be out right now. The wait is killing me! If you enjoy mysteries, and a bit of love triangles, then this is the perfect book for you!

This second book in the series shows more of this alternate fairy tale world. Everly is learning more about herself, her family, and this new world as she goes on her first mission. I like the romantic threads that the author is weaving through the story without it being the main focus. I sped through this book in 2 days... and had a hard time putting it down. There was quite a cliffhanger at the end of the book, and I can't wait for the next book to see what happens.

I was so excited for this book and it definitely did not disappoint! Chanda has a real gift of pulling you into the story and making it seem so real! I absolutely love her mystery books so much! I finished this book and felt empty to where I needed to start the series over again. Everly is a relatable character to me and I have a hard time returning to reality. I will always recommend Chanda Hahn but the Grimm Society is quickly becoming my favorite series!

This was the best book yet. Everly has the smarts to figure out just about anything. I was on the edge of my seat for sure. Just when I thought all the excitement was done....BAM, Chanda threw in the biggest twist ever. There are things that happen that was a surprise. You are going to have a book hangover for sure with this book. You also might want to grab a reading buddy. There is nothing like saying OMG did you see that, with a friend.

Is it woke?
Not for a second

Is it good?
Chanda Hahn is a gem and so is this novel. I am impressed that this is just as good, if not better than, the first in this series.

Is it appropriate for your children?
It definitely is. 'The Grimm Tides' has less mature references than the first, though it still explores teen independence. I would suggest that this is more accessible than its predecessor and any teenager is safe to read it.

At first I was skeptical about the book being “cheesy” due to the story being about the sea (I’m normally not a fan, personal preference), but Chanda Hahn did not disappoint! Between solving the mystery of what could be killing the locals and blossoming romance, I could not put the book down and finished it in record time. Great follow up to the first book and cannot wait for the next!

The Grimm Tides is a fantastic sequel to The Grimm Society and gave me a great reason to dive back into the world of Grievers and Gravemark. I could not turn the pages fast enough to discover what awaits in Echo Bay and the mysterious ongoings that Everly has found herself apart of. So happy to get more of my favorite, cartoon watching, Corvis!

Love love loved this book. Everly is the protagonist in this tale, every part of this book was unexpected. Just when you think you know the plot, you couldn’t be more wrong. The danger she is in at times is absolutely nerve wreaking. I think we need a spin off story with Kat. I LOVE her she is so spunky!

Grimm Tides like Chanda Hahn other books is imaginative and full of twist and turns. It has action, love and all the things you look for in a great YA book. It is definitely worth the read like all of her books. She is a great author who has another great series under her belt. Grimm Society series is one for the books pun intended. Things are afoot here! We left off on a cliffhanger in book 1, so we continue here to figure out the mysteries behind what’s happening in Echo Bay. Everly has a lot of challenges ahead of her, including potential love interests, so she has to keep a level head and make her way through. The author definitely keeps us in surprise and there are turns we don’t expect. I cannot wait for the next one!
