It's always fun to discover a new writer, and Aaron Ramsby is one of the more promising dystopian sci-fi writers I've come across in a long time.
His debut novel features a post-apocalyptic world where mankind has regressed to a more primitive technological stage of development. Radioactive emissions have caused massive genetic mutations among all species great and small, making for a more dangerous but also more interesting world.
Our heroes are a young girl and her wolf-like mutated boyfriend who discover a treasure trove of "ancient" artifacts only to be ambushed by a psychotic android obsessed with "genetic cleansing." When the girl is kidnapped, the race is on for her boyfriend and his fellow survivalists to save her.
What's interesting about this story to me is that, despite my description, it turns out there are really no heroes and villains here, only flawed individuals doing what they think is right. It all culminates in a truly surprising ending that is sure to be both provocative and controversial.
It will be very interesting indeed to see where the story goes from here...
A dystopian story with dynamic, fully formed and nuanced characters, Ruins delivers an exciting adventure into an alternate future (we hope) on Earth.
I would like to say that I was promised giant robots and only insects in one chapter. This was a lie.
All of that said, Ramsby’s novel is slow to start with a long climb to establish the world, the rules of the game and the various players on the chessboard of new-Earth. But the overall adventure, while simple enough: save Mya becomes clearly a weighted match. Weighted against those who are our heroes.
Once the action begins, though, escalation and raised stakes keep the tension high and heightening. It ends teetering on the edge of a cliff. With your safety rope chewed to the teensiest last strand.
As a fan of the genre -- and back in my high school days, an avid player of the Gamma World RPG -- this debut fiction novel by Aaron Ramsby was enjoyable both in reading it, and for the fun memories it brought back for me during those days I and my friends played Gamma World.
With genetic mutations caused by radioactive fallout among all species left alive in the world -- making for both a crazy-dangerous and fascinating world -- we follow a story as old as time: a boy trying to save his girl.
I enjoyed "Ruins of Ivy" immensely, recommend it to any reader who's a fan of post-apocalyptic/SciFi worlds, and am looking forward to Aaron's next installment!
You are taken to time when Earth has changed and people are somewhat different but the human is there. But world is strange as well dangerous , when someone is missing then they hope to find her. This is ware they have a lot of trouble trying to find her , the author keeps you involved and wanting more.
I liked the plot and the world building. The characters have decent depth, although more could be done with them. There is a need for editing in the book, but it's not a major issue.
A great story from this emerging author. I can't wait for his next book. He paints a vivid picture for the reader and is truly gifted in the craft of engaging the reader.
Aaron Ramsby has written a rather different post-appocalypse novel, especially in its unique, not-quite-human characters. There's plenty of action as its protagonists make their way through a ruined world to rescue their friend, discovering the secrets left behind on their way. An enjoyable beginning with plenty of surprises.
