I read ‘Small Things Like These’ which is about Ireland’s Magdalen laundries & the young pregnant unmarried girls who were concealed & forced to labour in these institutions which were operated & financed by the Catholic Church. This is a short 114 page book. It’s not a substantial story. It’s more about Bill Furlong, who is a coal & timber merchant, and his wife & their five young daughters. On the back cover of the book one review reads: ‘Stunning . . . A haunting, hopeful masterpiece.’ Sinead Gleeson. The book is so brief I really don’t know how it can be described as ‘stunning’. I just didn’t think there was a lot of content.
