Drafted

Rate this book
Protection. Justice. Order. Three words that haunt Reverie Adams every day. For years, the government has advertised the Draft as necessary to preserve the future of Ordinem. Sacrifice a little freedom for the protection of all. But for Rev, that sacrifice struck a little too close to home.

Known to most of Ordinem as the Archer, Rev has turned vigilante with a single to avenge her little sister's disappearance eleven years ago and eliminate those responsible for the Draft. Upon taking out her latest targets, however, Rev makes a discovery that derails her TJ and Riya Collins, their two secret children. Against her better judgment, Rev takes on the responsibility of keeping the two safe. And, despite her efforts, she forms a tenuous bond with them. When the leader of the Draft puts a target on TJ's back, Rev will have to risk everything for the people she cares about--even if it means putting her mission on the line and confronting the shadows of her past. If you enjoyed the suspense of Marie Lu's Warcross and the fast-paced action of the TV show Arrow, you'll love the thrilling adventure of Drafted. Pick up a copy and join Rev in her quest for vengeance--and the truth.

3.5 stars, personally ⭐️ Clean Fiction (no faith content, cursing, sexual innuendoes, or sexual content.) - YA Dystopian

2023 read: This was a completely random book I decided to pick up on a whim when I was in the mood for a fantasy/dystopian story. I thought it was well written (especially for first person POV that can easily feel like a wattpad story) and it kept me interested. There’s sibling content and a moral dilemma *and* secret identities? Yes, I was interested.

That said, there’s obviously some content to note. Reverie has killed people to try to find her sister and we see her kill, seriously threatened to kill, and injure others. A lot, really. TJ is also tortured at one point and it messes with him mentally and physically, obviously. I was really concerned going into this book that it would be potentially glorifying Rev being a vigilante and seeking revenge for what happened to her sister, but thankfully, there’s character development and Rev having to deal with guilt and forgiveness (not at first, it’s a process) which is why I’m marking this as a 3.5, personally. It’s clean fiction with no faith content, but there was also no written out cussing or sexual innuendoes, so I’m grateful to the author for that. There’s just a decent amount of violence, but at the same time it’s not harped on or gory at all. I found that to be impressive, actually, because it could have been easy to dwell in the ditches of that content, but the author didn’t go there—yet it’s very obvious and talked about often that the Archer is a murder and a couple come to her defense that she has her reasons and a good heart, but is doing what she thinks is best and that she's fighting for a good cause. It was interestingly done and I'm curious to see how the next book will continue the guilt/forgiveness thread. We're justifying murder, which I'm not comfortable with, but I'm glad there was at least a struggle in those thoughts and feelings.

Random note—the name Reverie? I love it and have it now noted in my favorite names list on my phone.

Rev and TJ both had moments that felt out of character for them, but they were both fine characters. I felt weird for the first part that they were the same age (I kept picturing him younger) and I honestly hope there won’t be a romance between them in the next books, but I imagine I’ll be disappointed about that. (I have a thing where if a love interest killed the other’s parent, they shouldn’t be a thing, but hey, apparently I’m petty and hold grudges on that. Cough A Thousand Heartbeats cough) Speaking of the next books, I can honestly say that if the second book was out already I would have started it right away—but I can’t do that because I made the mistake of reading a book that was just released. Ugh. I really ought to know better. The ending was good—not a complete cliffhanger, but you know there’s still a lot more to come. Honestly, I’m kicking myself that I read this book before the series was done, haha.

2025 reread: Reread this one to finally read the sequel to this duology and have basically all the same thoughts from my first read. I don't think I have anything to add; for the violence, it's right on the line of what I'm okay with, personally. I don't love how Rev has killed so many people, but it also makes sense for what her goal of gaining certain information is. I look forward to the character development, forgiveness, and growth that will definitely be in the second book for both her and TJ.

Rough idea of the main content found in this book:
I feel like if this was a movie, it would probably be PG-13 because of the violence and showing injuries, but I never felt like it was over the top of gory or stomach turning (For a random comparison, "The Remnants" series by Lisa T. Bergen was more violent in my opinion and I had a hard time stomaching the violence in that series.) I would mark this book as the content being semi-detailed (being up to 3-4 sentences in the details) with the torture parts being a bit heavier in descriptions.

Rev kills people, seriously threatened death and harm, and injuries others (including TJ at the beginning; She's killed a total of seven people prior to the book starting and then two at the beginning); TJ is tortured with a needle and serum multiple times (it messes with him mentally and physically, plus he has a bit of PTSD that is triggered afterwards) & almost drowns (forced drowning/execution); We see our main characters hold others at gunpoint, knifepoint, and bowpoint, and also them being on the receiving end of those; We also see others (good guys and bad guys) be shot with pulse guns and shot; Someone else makes the Archer promise not to kill anymore people; Weapons are used and others are majorly injured (shot with guns, pulse guns, and tasers; Including our main characters using them towards others and it being used on them); Being shot (bullets and arrows), Being chased by bad guys, Pain, Passing out, Blood/Bleeding, & Injuries (few sentences of details each time); The Archer/Rev also holds a guy hostage, which a friend of her's isn't happy about; Drugging someone & Being drugged.

This book is all about the topic of the government stealing/kidnapping infants over a decade ago and making them to be killing machines, we see this on page from run ins with them and it's discussed often; Mentions of wars; Mentions of executions, drownings, & the government broadcasting the executions as a warning to others; Mentions of deaths & accidents; Mentions of beatings & a girl being beaten up by police-like officers; Mentions of a bomb & major injuries; Mentions of thieves, stealing, & break-ins; A few mentions of being drugged & attempts of that; A few mentions of someone's mom having anxiety attacks.

Rev curses but none are actually written out (about a handful of times); No language stronger than an unfinished what the—, 'holy...', stupid, and idiot; "No dip, Sherlock" is said sarcastically; Sarcasm & Eye rolling.

TJ struggles with hatred towards the Archer for killing his parents and wants to know why she killed them (when she finally tells him, he doesn't believe her because he believes his parents were good people); *Spoiler* ; Many mentions of lies, lying, & liars.

There's a couple of embraces and touches between Rev & TJ, but it felt more like a forgiveness or comforting hug than an embrace with romantic intentions (maybe 70% vs 30%); Rev & TJ wonder about having feelings for the others, but nothing really happens between them; A few mentions of crushes & liking someone; A couple mentions of dating & a girlfriend (teasing).

This book...how do I even begin??

It's rare lately for me to sit down for several hours in a row to read a book, but the moment I hit the climax, there was no way I was going to put the book down.

The author did an incredible job of breaking the stigma of clean books being "boring" and instead crafting characters that truly resonated and creating a complex plot that had me absolutely hooked by the end! The only content worth noting was violence, but that's expected in dystopian, and it was never unnecessary or overly descriptive. The touches of romance were just enough to add a great subplot, and there was absolutely no language.

I'd totally recommend this book to anyone who likes Divergent by Veronica Roth, Recruit of Talionis by C. J. Milacci, or any dystopian book with plenty of suspense and a deeply complex plot! I'm super excited to read the next one!

Whew! This book brought me on quite the mini emotional rollercoaster!

Drafted had me from the opening sentence. I truly enjoyed following Rev and TJ, the two main characters, as they learned to trust and lean on each other throughout the course of the story. I also loved the theme of forgiveness that ran so thickly through this book; both the journey of self-forgiveness that Rev goes on, and the forgiveness that TJ so freely offers her.

I found the world that Tommie built intriguing (though I wish I could have seen and learned more about it!), and the cast of characters was so enjoyable. Rev’s stubborn, sarcastic nature had me laughing throughout. TJ’s sweet, loving, honest, and all around not-toxic personality was so refreshing to see in a YA/dystopian MMC. (And just as a warning, it’s totally exploited. Be prepared for all of the physical, mental, and emotional torture our boy goes through. Tommie’s a monster.) Riya, Savi, Ethan, Reiko, Alec, Hunter, and the rest of the more minor characters had their own flaws, personalities, and stories, and I enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them!

I am SO excited to see where the sequel takes these characters—and to watch as Tommie’s writing career grows! 💜

Summary: Worth the read!

Rev seems like a normal teenager, except she’s strategically interrogating and killing anyone involved in an evil government program that stole her sister. The story chronicles the moral dilemma she encounters when she accidentally orphans two other teenagers on her rampage.

I loved that this book was actually YA, as opposed to most of what’s on store shelves in the YA section. Spice-wise, it was clean with only a mild, age appropriate romantic subplot. The plot was simple but intriguing enough to prevent boredom. The MC had a the sort of badass alter-ego that I think we all wish we could have after walking out of a superhero movie. (The Archer is like a combo of Katniss + Hawkeye, so if you’re a Marvel or Hunger Games fan, you’ll definitely enjoy Drafted.)

The dystopian setting was true to the genre. I can’t say there was much originality, but I didn’t get bored so I think it was well done. There were a few things that (even for fiction) seemed a little implausible. One thing that struck me was the how blood-thirsty the MC seemed. It was sort of jarring to have a heroine that thought pretty lightly about taking lives.

All around, Drafted was a good book. I can be a tough reviewer and I would have given this book 3-3.5 stars, but I think it’s completely appropriate to to take the author’s age into account. For a young writer, I think the story is very well thought out and exciting. Many writers have ideas when they’re young, but few have the discipline and skill to bring them to fruition.👏🏻

I was given a free ARC for an honest review.

From chapter 1, this book dived into the story. There was no slow beginning. It took me straight into the world, the characters, and the plot.

There wasn’t a single time in this book that I felt ‘bored. Seriously, each page had some new character or backstory that added so much to the dramatic plot. Forgiveness, betrayal, and regret. This story has it all, and left me hanging on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Nothing about this book seemed inappropriate, which was awesome. The fighting wasn't horribly detailed, and there wasn’t a single kiss. (other than from a brother to a sister on the cheek/forehead)

The relationship to the characters, the draw to why Reverie did the things she did, it was all amazing. (quick note, the names are unbelievable. Love them all!)

By the end of the book, my jaw was left hanging, and I instantly bought Undrafted, which is the next book in the series.

Drafted by Tommie Michele was one heck of an adventure. Firstly, I love how the author makes a smaller map feel so big. She doesn’t need a million different settings to immerse us into the world of Ordinem. The government set up and details of how the book’s dystopian world works are some key elements to the super solid world-building we see in the book. Secondly, I love that each character has their own feel to them; the author does a great job at giving everyone their own unique voice. Thirdly, the character development. I loved the character development of TJ and Rev; TJ growing more courage & Rev finally knowing how to healthily express her emotions. Lastly, the pacing & description in the book are superb! Total page turner!

The reason why it’s not a full 5 star for me is just because at times it was hard to believe the characters—more in the beginning. However, from the standpoint of a believer, I see that redemption and forgiveness are some huge themes here and are seen a lot toward the end of the book. This being said, TJ’s big heart—though most would think he’s crazy for half of the stuff he puts up with—reminds me of how the Lord’s told us to be forgiving and selfless.

This book was a great set-up for the next book of the Drafted Series and I’m super excited for it!

This was given to me as an ARC in return for my honest review✨🙌🏽

This book is absolutely amazing. This is a YA Arrow meets The Hunger Games story.

Reverie Adams lost her sister when she was 5 to the secret government program called the Draft. On her journey to find her sister, she meets TJ Collins in unforeseen circumstances. She deals with a moral dilemma regarding TJ and his sister Riya.

TJ's life isn't the most normal one, but it worsens when he encounters the Archer. Will he be able to forgive for what she has done? This might depend on whether or not he survives this new life he has been thrust into.

What this book has:
~Dual POV
~Arrow meets The Hunger Games vibes
~Strong Female Main Character
~No Spice
~Justice vs. Revenge
~Young Teenagers Taking on the Government
~Female Archer
~Found Family

Trigger Warning
~Violent end to parents lives
~Loss of a sibling (not dead just separated from each other)

Thank you Tommie Michele for the opportunity to arc read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Robin Hood meets The Giver in this wonderfully crafted dystopian masterpiece. (Ms. Michele, if you see this, please quote me on the back cover of one of your books.)
Seriously though. This book is amazing. It’s even better than Hunger Games- which is high praise, as I love the Hunger Games. For one, there’s no stupid love triangle (Gale sucks, btw).
Rated PG-13 for violence.

Drafted is a fast paced YA urban fantasy set in a dystopian society. It has a similar feel to Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent, where the ruling Forces control the population under the guise of protection and offering safety from outside threats, but harbour dangerous secrets in the form of 'The Draft', a mysterious military program somehow involving stolen children.
Told from dual POV this story has mystery, drama, action, violence, and a focus on justice and revenge.

Rev has one goal in life to find out what happened to her little sister, and must live a secret life under The Archer allias to try and uncover the truth, and get to the root of the conspiracy, killing any threats along the way.
Meanwhile TJ and Riya have their lives turned upside down with their parents murder and must go on the run, forced to team up with an enemy to uncover their own truths and stay alive.
With secrets, lies and betrayals noone knows who can be trusted, but a group of teenagers and a vigilante Archer forming an alliance might be the only way to uncover the truth of 'The Draft' and save the people they care about.

This was an exciting read with strong characters, creative world building and dark themes explored. Looking forward to book 2 in the Drafted series.

a fun ride of masks, action, secrets and an epic climax

From the cover I was hoping for a good old action-packed superhero story and boy did I get that! The characters were great, yet flawed. Their dialog and action beats were so well done. I fully enjoyed the world of Ordinam, the enforcers, the villain, and the conflict rising in each chapter!

The only reason this isn’t five stars is because I kept getting pulled out of the story and skimmed white a bit anytime the author summarized events I had just read and explained things to characters in a exposition heavy way.

But other than that, I this book was fantastic! I flew through it, grasped onto each secret and Betrayal with glee. Oh, and the climax was SO good! I have read so many books that don’t get this right (nor the all is lost moment) and the author nailed it! I was turning pages lightning speed the last 20% of the book, satisfied and excited with each payoff the author had setup in the book.

And let’s not forget the great themes of forgiveness and trust. It’s so refreshing to read an action-packed story with deep themes.

Well, done, Tommie! A great, layered superhero story I will be telling people about!

"Drafted" hits the mark! Fast paced and action packed, it's one of those books where you try to sneak in a little bit here and there throughout the day to see what happens next. Multiple plot twists keep the story exciting from beginning to end.

I wasn't expecting such a hard-hearted protagonist, but Rev plays her role well - bitter, angry, hurting. With the lengths she'll go to for justice and revenge, some readers might say she's an unrealistic character. But the world Rev lives in necessitates a person with such passion, even though she must learn to change her methods. The theme of forgiveness is evident throughout the book.

Good character arcs for all the main players in this story, with lots of teasers that will hopefully be addressed in book two! I was a bit disappointed towards the end, however, that Rev's internal struggles weren't explained more, as they had been up till that point. Overall, the ending satisfies, yet leaves you wanting more of the story. I'm excited to read book two!

I liked it. It was an entertaining read, but there were some things that made me a little hesitant to keep reading...

The FMC is super nonchalant about killing or hurting others for the most of the book. While that does change toward the end, I felt the journey was more of a flip-of-a-switch rather than a growth arc.

The MMC and FMC seem to have a spark of romantic interest in the later half of the book. It isn't confirmed, so maybe things will go a different direction, but as it's set up now, that's what it seems like. And that's fine. The problem is....... The FMC killed (onscreen) the MMC's parents. Forgiveness could be a huge lesson in this book, and it is, but the way it's done isn't my favorite. I do not like the idea of the MMC falling in love with his parents' murderer. She does feel regret and she has apologized, but again, it's a weird dynamic. It isn't confirmed, but it definitely seems to be going in that direction.

Overall, it is an entertaining read and I'll probably finish the series to see how it ends.

This story was amazing. The character development, the world building, the action is all fantastic. The overall arching theme for the characters in this story is family. What would you be willing to do keep your family safe? To save a loved one? To seek justice? The journey Rev takes throughout this book answers these questions.

This story hooks you from the first chapter and keeps you entertained until the last page. What I loved most about this book was that you become so invested in the story you forget you are reading a story about teenagers. This book is for readers of all ages. Ms. Michele’s ability to tell a story is incredible. The fact that this author is also in high school just adds another level of appreciation.

I highly recommend this story and I am looking forward to the next chapter in Rev’s journey.

I really enjoyed Tommie Michele’s debut novel Drafted. It reminded me of the Arrow TV show but for young adults. I also felt a sort of Divergent/Hunger Games vibe with the dystopian world. I loved seeing the development of both Rev and TJ’s characters and how much they grew. I can’t wait for the next book! Definitely recommend everyone give this book a read!

The Draft took Reverie Adams’ baby sister from her when Eliza was only a baby. Years later, Rev created her Archer alter-ego to find her sister and end the Draft. On a mission to obtain more information on the Draft, Rev is shocked to discover her targets have two undocumented children. After having her world rocked by this discovery, Rev feels responsible for them but also needs to re-evaluate how she has been conducting her operation.

If you are looking for a book that will have you up long past midnight and deserves a higher rating than five stars, then look no further. I just finished the book and am filled with so much adrenaline from the ending that I am not sure I can word this review properly.

Read the book. Just read it. And then message me to say you have read it so I can scream with you.

On a serious note: I think "Drafted" has earned the title of my new favorite book. It was simply a book that hooked me from the beginning and never let me go. It has been a while since I was up past midnight reading, only stopping when the device I was reading on died... and then picking it up again first thing in the morning.

The CHARACTERS, the POV'S, the PLOT, the SUSPENSE, the TWISTS, the COVER. Amazing. 5/5 stars, I will be diving into "Undrafted" the second I can get my hands on it.

This was a really enjoyable dystopian novel! I'm not a huge fan of vigilante protagonists, but despite that, I was able to connect with Rev, understand her motivations, and root for her arc.

But the character I loved the most was absolutely TJ. *sob* He tugs on the heartstrings like only very special characters can do.

The prose was well-written, and I was never bored (which is shocking for me, lol). Even though most of the action happens toward the end of the book, the plot never lagged. (Also, I'm a slow reader, but I read the last quarter of the book in, like, a day. 👀)

I can't wait to dive into book two!

Tommie's debut novel, this novel, DRAFTED is a great story! I'm so glad to have caught an ARC to see Tommie take off. The series is set up really well with this book. Every chapter kept me riveted. Technically I'd give Drafted 4 1/2 stars. If you loved the TV show Arrow, and The Hunger Games, I think you will like this book. It's definitely a MUCH cleaner version than the other two, so I'd feel comfortable letting my older kids read this book. There are a few unanswered questions, hence the 4 1/2 stars and not 5, but hopefully we'll get more in Tommie Michele's next book. Looking forward to reading more!

I don't often pick up distopian stories to read. Drafted is absolutely an exception to my rule. The real characters draw you in; the story keeps you reading; and the setting ties it all together neatly as a solid backdrop. I found it hard to put down and was slightly distressed when it was over. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel!
