I picked up To Kill a Mockingbird for a fairly simple reason. I was travelling, and the physical size of the book meant it could easily slip into my pocket for the flight.
For many South Africans, this is one of those books we remember reading at school. Unfortunately, set works don't always leave us with the fondest memories, but as I've been slowly working my way through the classics, I knew this was one I had to read.
To be honest, I found the first part of the book a little slow. It took me some time to settle into the story and connect with the characters. But as the book unfolded, everything changed.
Without giving away any spoilers, there are several moments that made me stop reading for a few minutes just to think. Harper Lee has a remarkable way of making you reflect on justice, compassion, prejudice, and the way we view other people. More than once I found myself thinking about my own life and asking whether I see people the way I should.
I've now finished the book, and I can honestly say it is outstanding. It might not quite make my very small list of perfect five star reads, but it's incredibly close.
If you've never read To Kill a Mockingbird, or if it's been years since you last picked it up at school, I'd highly recommend giving it another chance. It's a timeless novel that still has plenty to say today.
