Queens' Row

Rate this book
When political royalty moves to a small town, anything can happen.

In Queens’ Row, as Eisenhower struggles to keep a third world war at bay, a small town wrestles with changing expectations of motherhood, gender norms, and the bonds of love, family, and friendship.

Queens’ Row takes us back to June of 1960, at Gettysburg Country Club, where Professor Grace Gilmartin and her friends reign supreme over the latest gossip—from President Eisenhower’s latest meeting with Nikita Khrushchev to the lifeguard’s latest crush.

The summer is shaping up to be like any other, until “Ike” announces that once his second term is up, he and his family will be moving to their sleepy little Pennsylvania town–whose only other claim to fame begins and ends with the Civil War.

Gettysburg’s glamourous new residents up the social ante, and whoever makes the cut for the famous family’s inner circle quickly becomes the talk of the town.

Against the backdrop of manicured golf courses, political intrigue, and powerful secrets, Grace and her friends are invited to dinner at the White House, where a die is cast that will turn their world upside down.

A fun fast read but probably most appreciated by Gettysburg natives and especially those who belonged to the Gettysburg Country Club. The book takes place in Gettysburg during the years when Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower lived on a farm outside of the Town. The author mixes fact with fiction and includes many long gone landmarks that will take resident readers on a trip down Memory Lane. But the story is creative and well written enough to appeal to a much larger audience. I read it in 2 sittings and had trouble putting it down in between!
But, that being said, there were also 3 typos and one plot mistake. But the worst was a research mistake where at least twice the characters are using a microwave in 1960! It’s too bad because otherwise the author did painstaking research to get everything right, even about what might have been sold in the local “Dime Store”. But too bad she didn’t have those TV Dinners being slid into the oven, or even into a “Radarange” but microwave ovens didn’t become affordable for residential use until the late 70’s. Had to take a star off because of that.

A wonderful book, tying history and the cultural heritage of 1950s America into a smartly written fictional plot. I glided through and was hooked until the end, following the challenging journey of Grace and her friends. I loved learning more about the link between the Eisenhowers and Gettysburg through the country club there and the social norms that came with being part of that society.

As a native of Gettysburg, I could appreciate the Gettysburg Country Club setting (my paternal grandfather a founding member and my father-in-law the manager just before its unfortunate closing) for this quick and easy to read novel that takes place during the Eisenhower Era.
